  1. Hi there. I work for DOE too. I however, have the HIP prime. I Am having a revision. You aren’t going to die. The medical field has made great stride. What surgeon are you meeting with? Each program require a different things. Emblem health who covers ghi and hip doesn’t require the 6 months visits anymore (stopped last year) that is what certain programs want. They want to be able to see that you are committed to this. also if you’re afraid of acid reflux I will highly consider doing your research on the sleeve and GERD. I know of a few people at my program who revised from the sleeve to RNY due to developing gerd after the sleeve.
  2. I had a revision from a lap band to RNY and I know for the first 4 days I had terrible "buyers remorse". But around day 5 I felt like I was gonna make it, and every day was better than the day before. It's totally normal to think "what the hell did I just do to myself???" Almost everyone of us have thought that right after surgery. Your doctor should have you on a PPI for a few months after your surgery. I had heartburn for about a month after mine. Be patient with yourself on the fluid drinking and don't force it. It will get easier. Hang in there, YOU GOT THIS! It WILL bet better, I promise...

At OCC - lots of waiting

I think Monday is the busy day at OCC. Last Monday, there were 6 surgeries. They started off with the "easy" surgery first (two plications), then did my sleeve, and the last three surgeries were band-to-sleeve revision surgeries. Don't remember what time my surgery was, but after I got in my room and got the IV, it went quickly after that. And I wasn't thrilled about having six surgeries in a day either - especially wouldn't like 7.
  4. Ms antiband says it well! I was afraid of the surgery and more afraid of failure. I kept my band secret but felt shame about the lousy weight loss AND all the vomiting for 10 bad years. I wrestled with the revision decision for a long time. Reading this forum helped me build confidence. A doctor told me that I was one that could make it work because "I never gave up". That was empowering and has influenced how public I have been about my sleeve too. I have so much empathy for those standing on the edge..trying to believe that it might work this time. A key difference is I am just so DONE with food being what pleases me!!
  5. I went to my 1 month check up today with a list of questions for my doctor! The most important question I wanted answered is whether my sleeve is bigger than it should be Because from day 1 I have felt like I can drink and eat way more than every other sleeved patient I know or have read about here on this web sight. And guess what the answer was....YES. He said that because I was a band to sleeve revision he had to cut around instead of through the scar tissue on my stomach from my former lap band leaving me a larger than usual sleeve! I am so glad to know that I am not losing my mind but now I am incredibly disappointed. And I am a bit upset with my surgeon for not telling me this was a possibility before I ever had the surgery and most of all not telling me afterwards. It has been such an emotional month for me knowing I can eat way to much but trying my hardest to stop eating before I ever reach satiety. I never feel full when I follow my NUT's diet plan. I feel so cheated. Now I know why I am a slow loser compared to others.
  6. I'm not quite 7 months out and am down 92 lb.s It's a myth that revision folks don't lose much or don't lose quickly. Best of luck to you, Kim

    Why Aren't You Losing Weight?

Actually, Saturday I plan on talking to my doc about revision to a sleeve. So far he's saying no. But I am saying yes. Not sure who will win this one. ;o)
  8. I had my band 6 long frustrating years. And the past 30 days since my revision has been the best month ever. I have 0 hunger. Never believed that would happen. I have not puked since having the revision. Puked all the time with the band. I am only on the soft food part of my post op as of yet. However eggs don't scare me anymore. Tuna doesn't scare me anymore. Get the picture. I had six years of torture. Learning how to eat around the band because it caused so many food intolerances. I love my revision. Best decision ever. And as far as not losing as much as a virgin sleever. News flash, we are virgin sleevers. I have lost 40 pounds since 2/11/13 and I only have 70 total to loose. It's up to you. Follow the rules and this surgery does what the band was supposed to do but now is recognized as not being able to do. Sent from my iPad using VST

    Hello--New Here

I am in the same boat you guys! I had my band removed 7/16 and sleeve at the same time. Things have been not so great since and I’m having painful GERD since my sleeving. I had Cigna and all was approved for revision, but my husband got a new job and we now have BCBSLA and bariatric surgery is not covered under his new employer 😔. I’m working with my Dr to file an appeal and pray it is accepted!

    Howdy! Newbie intro

Welcome Becky! There are more than a few MX band revision patients on here as I'm sure you know if you've been reading a while. I'm typing this from Mexico actually. I had a great experience here, heading home tomorrow morning. Look forward to seeing you on the forums.

    Heading out Tomorrow!!!

Kathy, good luck tomorrow, you will do great. I was a band to sleeve revision and can honestly tell you I had no issues with head hunger at all. In fact, I never thought about food. Even now, at one year out, I still don't experience hunger and have to force myself to eat sometimes.

  16. I had my RNY in 2002 and lost 220 pounds...2006 was a stressful year because I got married, moved 1000 miles away from family at my husband's request...I started eating sweets again which is like a drug to me...by 2009 I had only gained back about 40 so I wasn't too worried about it...then my dad got sick and almost died and that threw me into a deep depression as we'll as denial about my slow weight regain...over the next 8 years I ended up weighing 388 (not my highest) and decided to look into a revision...the surgeon I am seeing is the third opinion I've gotten...he supposed to be one of the best revisionists in the country...I am more determined to make this revision work then I was for the original surgery...back then I was in denial that I could gain it back...I'm also active in therapy where my eating is a topic. I've also done a lot of research about the DS and am aware of the high complication rate but since there is not much on success with a distal revision I was aiming toward that...so I was looking here for possible successes to help me decide to stay with this surgeon or travel far distances to hopefully find one that will do the DS on me. Oh and I'm now down to 360 bmi 59.9 because I've completed one of three consecutive months in my supervised diet...a pre-op requirement. Sent from my SM-G920V using the BariatricPal App
  17. I have a decision to make that I hope some of you can help me with...I had RNY in 2002...I'm looking to get a revision...the surgeon I have seen will only revise me to a distal RNY...I am more interested in the DS...should I trust him or look for another surgeon...this type of revision is only done by a handful of surgeons in the USA due to it's complexity Sent from my SM-G920V using the BariatricPal App
  18. I should add that per the terms of my insurance, I paid $500 for the band to sleeve revision through Kaiser.
  19. Saw my surgeon on Monday and he feels that the decision to move forward with band revision to bypass is the best option for me . I am attending my first of 2 required support group meetings tonight and waiting to receive the list of names and numbers to set up the rest of appointments required by this specific bariatric program. I am hoping within 2- 2.5 months from now I can be ready for my new chapter. Can I please get some updates from people that have been revised and the first few months ... how did your life change ? pain , discomfort , new foods , tired , any thing to put this whole journey into a realistic perspective.

    Nina's Plastics journey

Nina: Congratulations on your weight loss. You can and are doing it. I have lost a total of 10 pounds in the last month. I am working very hard. Exercising 6 days a weeks and counting every blasted calorie. I think it is paying off! Unfortunately, the weight loss seems to be making my breasts even empytier. I ordered a kit from a female plastic surgeon on the internet that has a special bra and different size implants, so you can try them on in your own home, have your husband look and decide for yourself. I guess that sizing is an issue because the sizes don't come in bra or cup sizes but in cc's. According to this website, deciding on the size can be difficult and is the main and most common reason for revision surgery. Anyway, I haven't made up my mind, but I did talk to the PS and I don't have to decide until the 2 week pre-op visit, so I have time to think about every thing. I guess I'm inclined to go for it, even though it's an additional $1,800. My DH thinks I should leave well enough alone!
  21. I followed my liquid diet and never cheated. It was a real struggle but I wanted my liver in good shape. The day before surgery I had to have an endoscope because I was a band revision. After it was done my doctor ask if everything was ok or if I needed anything. I laughed and said yeah I need to eat. He shocked the heck outta me and said ok, you can eat today, but nothing after midnight!!!! It was a great day!

those who were banded in mexico

The peso has also gone way down, that's why the pieces have dropped in dollars. I just went to Dr. Aceves for a fill on Saturday and the cost for the flouro was only $60 instead of $75 because of the exchange rate. As for why I chose the band over the sleeve, I was not interested in cutting off a perfectly good part of my body. I realize it takes longer to lose the weight and you have to work at it, and it requires follow up but I was OK with all of those things. With the band everyone has their individual "sweet spot" yet with the sleeve it's an irreversable one size fits all. That just seems odd to me. The potential for revision from band to sleeve is there but not the other way around. I'm just a chicken, what can I say! LOL. With that being said, Dr. Aceves is the best choice for either (and yes I'm biased ) I believe he is doing more sleeves then bands now because of the demand. The day of my surgery I was the only band and there were 2 others getting sleeved.
  23. @@Lina123 I hope and pray that you get the support you need...we all need to be supported by those who are closest to us...it makes a huge difference. Thank you for replying to the topic. I'm sorry to hear about your issue w/GERD. My surgeon discussed the possible complications and concerns with me going with the sleeve, especially after reviewing the results of my Upper GI, and I finally made my decision to go with the RNY-Gastric Bypass. I have dealt with GERD for way too long and I'm ready to be rid of the nagging feelings associated with it. However, I'm also nervous about too much weight loss after having the RNY procedure, but also ask myself what is too much? Lol. I'm scheduled for surgery on Feb. 8th and I'm hoping that the loss will taper off at a "normal weight" and I am finally able to have a normal and healthy body composition. I look forward to discussing the weight-loss and maintenance plans with the Dietitian in a few weeks. As far as revisions, this has been a hot topic on this site and I'm sure if you search under the Gastric Bypass sections, you will find some answers. I wish you the best.
  24. I found my doctor because he was the only one who would take me on and revise my band with all it's complications. I knew of the complications because of several scans run in the Emergency Room from the pain I had. Every other doctor I called said no. I asked him personally and he and his staff were upfront with his stats. I have not had any complications post op. If you are in the Houston area, I can give you his name. Good luck!
  25. I originally had the sleeve and regained about 35 pounds and had a lot of acid reflux, before and after the sleeve. I just had revision to mini bypass on March 31. If I had the chance to do it over again I would definitely choose the bypass the first time and not mess with the sleeve. The sleeve works great for some people but for me it just didn't work or last like I had hoped it would. Good luck with whatever decision you make.
