OMG... I know I will have to start Puree diet at some point....YUK
Daisee68 replied to olydott's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I never actually pureed real foods either. I ate fat free refried Beans with melted cheese, yogurt, shakes, sugar free pudding, mashed avocado, hummus, etc. I also LOVED the Ricotta Bake. http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/2007/08/pureed-foods.html -
Three Months Post Op Success
JupiterinVirgo replied to JupiterinVirgo's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Congratulations! I understand that not tracking seems to be working well for you, but how do you know whether or not you are getting enough Protein? Just curious. My surgeon suggests only 40-50 g of protein a day so it's really easy to get into that ballpark without obsessing over grams. A cup of yogurt, a handful of nuts, Collegen powder in a green smoothie or a cup of coffee and some cheese usually does the job.40-50 grams of protein seems really low. Is that the protein target ongoing or was that just the target in the few days after surgery when it was harder to get in protein? This is first time I think I have ever seen a protein target under 60 grams, and most are closer to 80-100 grams. Mine is 100. I was surprised when he said that to. 40-50 grams of protein per day is my surgeons recommendation as of Monday. I thought it was supposed to be 60-80. Fifty grams is very attainable for me. I'd have to eat all day to make 100. -

I only once pureed actual food. I stuck mainly to yogurts, ricotta cheese, scrambled eggs, soups, protein drinks, applesauce, mashed potatoes, that sort of thing. You aren't going to feel much like eating anyway so don't even bother yourself about pureed steaks or things like that. You don't HAVE to have that type of pureed food. -

I didn't have a purée stage. As far as I can tell there is nothing magic about purée other than its a way to get more flavor and nutrition in with a semi-liquid/soft texture. If you like Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, refried Beans, tuna, Protein shakes, etc. then I don't see any reason to force yourself to eat something you don't like. -

Hi everyone, I am having my gastric bypass surgery 3/7/16 ...(this Monday)... and am trying to learn everything I can. I can't believe the day is here.! Well have been going over the various phases if the gastric bypass diet and am having a real problem anticipating the Puree diet. You see I am a nurse of 35 yrs, predominantly in the emergency room but I can still remember vividly my time on a medical ward. There we used to do long term care of the patients and the population was geriatrics. I remember feeding the patients puree diets and almost got sick to my stomach many times. The smell, consistency, and texture was nasty, especially the pureed liver. I have been reading up on different foods ppl are eating and blending, and I just don't think I can do it. I'll get sick. I know some of you may laugh at this or say "get over it and do it) I'm trying to keep an open mind but I think I'll stick to the shakes, cottage cheese, yogurt and creamed Soups, but when it come to blending eggs, meats, tuna and fish I think back to my experience with puree food and my stomach swirls. Does anyone have the same experience, I will discuss with my Doc and nutritionist but was wanting some feedback from the community. TY -
Wow, the instructions I got from my dietitian are completely different from the "don't change anything, your body decides what weight it wants to be" stuff I am reading here. These are the instructions I got, and they have worked well for me: 1. When you hit your goal weight and want to maintain, start eating your body weight x 10 in calories every day. 2. Continue to weigh, measure and track your food religiously. 3. Weigh yourself every day. 4. After two weeks of strict maintenance eating, assess. If you have lost more than 2 lbs, add in another 100 calories per day to your eating. If you have gained more than 2 lbs, subtract 100 calories per day. 5. Repeat for another 2 weeks and assess. Again, either add or subtract calories by 100 calories per day. 6. Keep repeating until you find your target calorie range. 7. When adding in calories, focus on adding in high protein or high fat foods -- jerky, dark meat instead of white meat poultry, avocado, cheese, nuts, olive oil, grass fed butter, switch from nonfat to full fat yogurt or milk, etc. Do not raise your calories with high carb foods such as grains or fruits or sugary foods. Do not raise your calories by grazing or snacking. 8. Weigh yourself a minimum of once a week once you hit maintenance. Every day is better. If you are weighing yourself regularly and sticking to your eating plan, you can stop weighing and measuring your food and tracking it in MFP. 9. When/if you find yourself 4 lbs over your target maintenance goal, or outside of your maintenance range at all if you set a range instead of a specific number as your goal, immediately drop into weight loss mode. This means: lowering your calories by 500 per day (more if that does not result in weight loss), weighing and measuring your food, tracking everything in MFP, and stopping eating all grains, starchy vegetables, and sweets. Once you get back into your maintenance goal/range, resume maintenance eating but be mindful of why/what behaviors you got out of your range and stop doing that. This worked really well for me. If I had just given up on being in control I would have been an utter failure. YMMV of course.

Work meetings were the worst when I was on the pre op and purée stage. Our bosses would order pizza and such and I'm just there with my Greek yogurt and it all smells so good

Not sure who I should tell!
lifeofblair replied to HappilyEverAfter44's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My coworkers kind of figured it out on their own because there is another lady that had it before she started and is very open about it and I was not. But, they noticed I was only eating yogurt and such when I came back and that I was losing weight pretty fast. They've been nice at least to my face and I work with all women. -

As someone whose dumping syndrome seems to be getting worse over time, I envy you. The grass is always greener on the other side, right? Imagine every time you eat you aren't sure if you are going to have explosive diarrhea, and it can include foods that never used to give it to you, so you are never sure. For example, I can eat yogurt, and 95% of the time it is fine, but if it isn't, I have about 5 seconds to make it to a bathroom. It has gotten so I am getting afraid to eat if I know I have to go anywhere, which is all the time! And sometimes it takes effect within 10 mins, other times an hour or hour and a half. *sigh* Not to downplay constipation, I know it is a big deal too. Congrats on your recent bowel cleansing! Scared to eat different foods
JamieLogical replied to rydersmama's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Well, I'm a year and a half out, so I have no limits on what i can eat anymore. Early on, my go-to snacks were Dannon Light & Fit Greek yogurt, string cheese, turkey sticks (like beef sticks, but with turkey), and Protein bars. Once I was allowed nuts, I would often do an ounce of peanuts for a snack as well. -

I guess I should better explain what I mean about my post. I know what I can eat, I'm looking more for different food/snack ideas. I haven't had Greek yogurt because I find it too high in sugar and carbs (except for plain). I don't want to eat bread or anything like that. Because I haven't had any sugar/carbs I'm scared that introducing these foods will hinder my weight loss. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -

I wasn't allowed nuts or berries with seeds until 3 months post-op, so you should definitely check with your nutritionist. As for carbs, I was allowed "soft whole grains" somewhere around 6 weeks post-op, iirc. However, I found anything "bready" WAY too filling still at that point. I remember trying to make myself an open face egg sandwich with a teeny tiny piece of this toasted: http://www.pepperidgefarm.com/ProductDetail.aspx?catID=754&prdID=121328 I got a little over halfway through it and thought I was going to die. But that was way more than 7 weeks out. Closer to 3 months probably? I can do a whole piece of toast now, but I'm 18 months out. Big difference! You should definitely be doing Greek yogurt now. Surprised your NUT didn't have you on that already in the full liquids phase... Great source of Protein and easy on the stomach. -
For the puree phase have you had rice?

Cottage cheese, unsweet apple sauce, strained cream soups, ricotta bake, and yogurt should all be ok for the puree stage. -

First, I don't know your program and you should probably check with your NUT to see what they want you eating at this stage. Everyone's program and stages are somewhat different. That said .... At 8 weeks I was eating soft foods such as Greek yogurt (my favorite was the Dannon Triple Zero banana and coconut), sf Jello & pudding, cream of wheat, scrambled eggs, chicken salad (mixed with plain greek yogurt instead of mayo), egg salad, and Laughing Cow cheese wedges. I still had one Protein shake per day just to make sure I was getting my full amount in, but I started to get most of it from foods at this point. I stayed away from nuts, Protein Bars, and fruits until pretty close to 4 or 5 months. Even now I limit how much of those things I eat anyway. -
What do you eat before and after a work out?
Indieflickers replied to skp's topic in Fitness & Exercise
I eat Greek yogurt about half an hour to and hour before working out. I get cramps if I do anything heavier. I get light headed if I don't eat at least a small about of carbs beforehand. All the research I've done suggests eating something before working out, usually some kind of carbohydrate like a banana, and some protein. -

esskay77 replied to MozzaWehsha's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I did have mashed potatoes--nice and pureed. And I am not a big fan but that was suggested and worked nicely. That and yogurt, sugar free apple sauce, ricotta cheese bake, and if you whip some cottage cheese so it doesn't have any lumps, that works, too. And tomato soup. -
I am 7 weeks postop and have only been eating Protein and a tiny bit of veggies. I want to start expanding the foods I can eat, but I'm scared. I don't want to eat carbs like bread, rice, or Pasta, but I'm thinking of stuff like nuts, plain Greek yogurt, berries, things like that. What bothers me is, will my weight loss slow down because I'm introducing some carbs and sugar? Should I just stick to protein only with a little veggies? I would really appreciate some suggestions of what to eat that's still good for me Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Yes it does. My typical workout day is wake 7:30, drink 8 ounce of water. 8/8:15 ish protein shake. I prefer to make my own in the nutra bullet w/ unflavored protein powder ¼cup plain, greek yogurt and bit of fruit or sometimes a little bit of raw honey. I do water aerobics from 9 -10. I count my protein shake as breakfast. I cannot workout on an empty stomach. My biggest meal of the day is usually lunch. Dinner is often a salad or soup. If I don't eat before a workout, not only don't have enough energy, I get ill. Post workout I'd have an ounce of nuts. It's my recovery food/snack. I then have lunch. 2 days a week I also do a low impact aerobic class at 11. On those days I typically drink water in between workouts and then have a protein bar after that. What I have found is I don't need large quantities of food, but I do need nutritionally packed food.

soooo many questions...pls help with answers
Eskarina replied to Katy Walton's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Do you have a dietician/nutritionist? They can also help with these questions. I was not specifically told 100ml but I was not able to finish a yogurt so I was likely eating slightly less than a hundred. If you eat too much, you can throw up but it is different for everyone. One day I took my pills and ate right after, it was too much for my little tummy and I puked. My doctor told me after not to eat for around 30 minutes after the pills...lives d learn. I normally stick to 30 minutes after but sometimes can't stand taking liquids in for 1.5 hours. I try to eat 5 times a day but that is because I work with when I have to work. Solid food is somewhat dependent on what it is but around 4 tablespoons of food for me. -
For the puree phase have you had rice?
Cervidae replied to MozzaWehsha's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@MozzaWehsha rice is a big risk in the first severeal months because it can indeed get stuck. Might I suggest pureed chili with a dollop of low fat or fat free sour cream? Or perhaps pureed chicken, humus, and taco sauce (this one is addictive!)? Another favorite of mine (my puree phase was in the fall of last year) - greek yogurt, pumpkin puree, cinnamon/pumpkin pie spice. Deelish! -

Gaining instead of losing
Kindle replied to NatashaSaysRawr's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Since you can drink OK, make sure everything you drink contains protein. I could barely eat more than a couple tablespoons at a time for several months, but I still got in 60-80g protein starting day five via protein shakes, milk, and even thinned Greek Yogurt. And no, I didn't want to eat, either, but I forced myself to get proper nutrition. After all, the whole point of surgery was to be healthy. Like @@perforce suggested, it's easier to eat a couple tablespoons several times/day than it is to try and eat just 1 meal. -
My goal is 800. Most days I have to fight to get there. (7weeks out). I can hit my Protein target with less than 400 Cals but know that is way too low. I "fluff" my calories with things like yogurt or hard boiled eggs.

Hello everyone, I just registered here because I need help. I'm two weeks post-op (February 16). I cannot eat. The first two weeks were a massive struggle to get Protein in. I could not swallow liquid Protein, they are gave me nausea, so I ate vegetable Soup (blended of course) and drank Water. Monday this week, I had the staples removed and pretty much go called an idiot by the nurse (she was not wrong). So I moved on to the pureed foods, the first thing I tried was Greek yogurt never had before but I have trouble going through the portion, it can take me up to 40 minutes. I am not hungry at all. The only thing I can eat again in about 40 minutes is my two scrambled eggs with cheese and apple sauce. Has anybody else felt this way? On Monday I had actually gained 4 pounds because according to the nurse my body was going into starvation mode..... I'm seriously freaking out. Thanks for any help or advice!
