    Spiraling out of control!! Help!!!

keep in mind most everyone here has years upon years of weight loss / weight gain and try and fail. This pattern is ingrained and can be our undoing if we don't recognize it and guard against it. Post op is a mental game and we are the enemy. build a plan around your doctors instructions then work out how to do this day in day out without huge effort. The key is it must work with your life or like a DIET it will fail over the long run. Everyone will have a slightly different plan that fits the life they are building. good luck and i hope you have a great week and get back on track.
  2. I found an article that was just published about people who eat eggs for Breakfast, and how those who do, lose more weight than those that eat carbs. This was also evidenced in other studies that have shown weight GAIN from instant oatmeal. This has got to be a carb thing... the fact that blood sugar is not spiking and dropping like crazy... Eggs are usually easier for bandsters... this gives you another excuse to enjoy... New research confirms that eating eggs boosts a healthy weight loss plan PARK RIDGE, Ill., Aug. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- A study published online today in the International Journal of Obesity shows that eating two eggs for breakfast, as part of a reduced-calorie diet, helps overweight adults lose more weight and feel more energetic than those who eat a bagel breakfast of equal calories.(i) This study supports previous research, published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, which showed that people who ate eggs for breakfast felt more satisfied and ate fewer calories at the following meal.(ii) 'People have a hard time adhering to diets and our research shows that choosing eggs for breakfast can dramatically improve the success of a weight loss plan,' said Nikhil V. Dhurandhar, Ph.D., lead researcher and associate professor in the laboratory of infection and obesity at Pennington Biomedical Research Center, a campus of the Louisiana State University system. 'Apparently, the increased satiety and energy due to eggs helps people better comply with a reduced-calorie diet.' Significant Weight Loss Related to Egg Breakfast Compared to the subjects who ate a bagel breakfast, men and women who consumed two eggs for breakfast as part of a reduced-calorie diet: -- lost 65 percent more weight -- exhibited a 61 percent greater reduction in BMI -- reported higher energy levels than their dieting counterparts who consumed a bagel breakfast (i) The egg and bagel breakfasts provided the same number of calories and had identical weights (energy density), which is an important control factor in satiety and weight loss studies. The researchers also found that blood lipids were not impacted during the two month study. They found that blood levels of HDL and LDL cholesterol, as well as triglycerides, did not vary compared to baseline cholesterol blood levels in subjects who ate either the bagel or egg breakfasts. These findings add to more than 30 years of research that conclude that healthy adults can enjoy eggs without significantly impacting their risk of heart disease. New Emphasis on the Importance of High-Quality Protein This study adds to the growing body of research which supports the importance of high-quality protein in the diet. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (AJCN) published a special issue in May 2008, which contains nine articles that focus on the value of high-quality protein in the American diet. A major finding was that not getting enough high-quality protein may contribute to obesity, muscle wasting (loss) and increased risk of chronic disease. (iii) , (iv) Jump Start the Morning with Eggs Jackie Newgent, registered dietitian and chef, stresses the importance of obtaining adequate high-quality protein when advising consumers about weight loss. 'Eggs are a good source of all-natural, high-quality protein, so they can help keep you satisfied longer, making it easier to resist tempting Snacks,' said Newgent. 'Nearly half of an egg's protein, and many of the other nutrients, are found in the yolk, so make sure to eat the whole egg for maximum benefits.' Newgent suggests these nutrition tips for a successful weight loss plan: -- Manic Monday: Make a batch of hard-cooked eggs on Sunday, so you'll have all-natural, high-quality protein meals for your on-the-go schedule during the week. Plus, eggs are incredibly affordable. At an average of $1.93 per dozen (or $0.16 per egg),(v) eggs are one of the most affordable high-quality protein foods in the marketplace. -- In-a-Minute Morning Meal: In less than 60 seconds, you can prepare an egg breakfast to help jump start your day. Simply beat one whole egg in a microwave-safe mug then cook in the microwave oven on high for 60 seconds. Slide the egg onto a whole grain English muffin. Add flavor with a sprinkling of fresh herbs, salsa, or cheese. Serve fresh seasonal fruit slices, like peaches in the summer, on the side for a balanced meal. Adults Who Eat Eggs for Breakfast Lose 65% More Weight

    Weight Gained?

I gained 20lbs and got approved with bcbs federal but we discovered during my 90days I had a pretty severe case of chronic veinous insufficiency which precluded weight loss and can cause weight gain. I had a very severe case. Before it was discovered I was told by my coordinator that there was no way I would be approved. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Tummy Tuck / Boob Job

I don't know if it will effect how they look afterwards after a boob job. I can tell you this. I nursed both of my children (way too long) and my breast have deflated and headed south. (lol) My breast also seems to be the first place I loose weight, so figure after I'm near goal they will have to be unrolled from my bra and somthing will ahve to be done about them. I joke about what nursing did to my breasts, but I wouldn't trade it for the world. If you are interested in breastfeeding future babies it something I would certainly discuss with your plastic surgeon. They have come along way over the years, but it used to be it could effect your milk supply if breast tissue was cut or moved in a lift or implant. Now with the tummy tuck I was advised by my plastic surgeon that it was best to wait till you were done having children. Key word best. The worst that I think would happen is that you have to have a re"tuck" after child birth though. (but this could happen with any weight gain or loss...a friend had a tummy tuck then lost more weight and needs a revision tummy tuck now.) Melissa

Losing more than just my weight...

I am so sorry to hear about your issues with your friend and your spouse. As for the friend, sounds like she was once the center of your attention and now you are focusing on you and she is no longer the princess in the middle. Sometimes you just need to cut your losses. Maybe she just needs some time, but if she is hurting you, she doesnt deserve you as a friend. As for the spouse...I think I can relate. My husband is extremely jealous and I think he was the main contributor to my weight gain because I was thin my whole life until him. He didnt want me out of his sight and worried about me having any sort of life outside the house. So he fattens me up so I dont want to go out and I am only attractive to him. He was happy. When I scheduled my surgery he kept saying that now I was going to be thin and I was going to leave him and want to go out with my friends all the time. The day of my surgery, my anesthesiologist made a stupid comment of "well, watch out because once they lose the weight they all want to go out and party all the time". That was the LAST thing my husband needed to hear. He continues to make comments and say, "dont think that you are going to start going out all the time now". I dont know how to ease his jealousy. I am doing this for me and us so that I can be a better wife and mother, have confidence to make love to him and not just quickies because I dont want him to look at me because I dont feel sexy. I am a 40 year old Mom with a 7 and 9 year old. I work full time and have a mother with a terminal illness....when the heck do I have the time to go out and if I did have the time...I am going to catch up on cleaning and sleep!!! He just doesnt get it. This is the ONLY bad part of having had my surgery. Every day he makes some kind of comment. I hope it doesnt ever get to where you are, but when a guy is jealous it makes LIVING very hard. I wish you the very best of luck with everything!!!! Tyna
  6. I was dissapointed about gaining weight when I returned from the hospital. I stayed overnight because of my co-morbidities. I gained 4 pounds and hadn't eaten anything but small amounts of jello and the protien shakes. I was also scared this wasn't going to work for me. A week after my surgery I did my post op visit, and I was 20 lbs from the pre op visit. I think my weight gain came from the IVs they gave me while in the hospital. I'm now waiting for my first fill. The Drs office said anything I loose between now and the first fill is bonus. I've come down a few pounds since then, but not what I would like. I'm just trying to be patient.
  7. Hello Everyone, I am new to this site so I appreciate your help. I currenly have had the LapBand for a year now. I have had many issues with the Band(Including revision of portal site, intergestion, pain in area, weight gain and vomitting. I am having a new DR remove the lapband next week and I was thinking of then going to get the Sleeve Procedure done. Did anyone decide to make this decision and has any insight for me? Thank you again, Jennifer.

    At a stand still

During the weight loss phase most programs recommend staying completely away from bread, Pasta, potato, cake, crackers, and most carbs. I get "good carbs" from some veggies but avoid the rest as much as humanly possible. Some people can incorporate carbs back in during the maintenance phase, but for some people they are a slippery slope and can lead to weight gain through "grazing". It's common to have a stall. Don't be discouraged.
  9. Hi there- DO NOT GIVE UP! You have a great tool now you just have to commit to working the tool. I'm 5 years out and have had small weight gains, tried to use excuses to keep eating crap but just decided I wanted to look and feel better! So I went right back to basics- the first thing that caught my eye was that you don't eat breakfast- START EATING BREAKFAST RIGHT NOW! It is proven that people who eat breakfast weigh less than those who don't AND it will be easier to get in all of your protein. The first thing you want to do is take everything out of your diet besides protein for a day or two or 3 to adjust your eating habits and hunger...Once you start down the carb road your hunger follows quickly. So eggs, cottage cheese, yogurt, chicken, shrimp, sliced lunch meat turkey and cheese- no bread, no pasta, no rice, no potatoes..Whenever your hungry take in some protein....After a few days of this (when you are no longer ravenouse every hour) limit your calories.Make sure you are getting plenty of fluids...but not with meals....no diet sodas or artifically sweetened stuff....and figure out a plan that can get you to the gym before work- I'm at the gym 6 days a week by 6:30 am and at work by 8:30 - and I'm a woman and have to do my makeup and my hair and gossip in the locker room so you should be able to make it in and out and to work on time.....send me a private message if you would like more - I'll give you my email address (or u give me yours) it's quicker and easier to talk. Marriage And Too Many Emotions

I know about thinking about the outcome instead of the journey...We are all so excited about it being our turn to succeed with WLS that most of us never think of the journey...I know now that the journey is long and full of uncertainty regarding the day to day struggles of the ups and downs of fixing the real problems that caused us to depend on food as our support system.... I am so glad for your comments as regards the encouragement that was given here...Your a trooper and you will get it together.....To be in fear is a good thing really because you will never take it for granted....Share your journey with your loved ones as you become an example for them to lean on even in other things in life besides weight gain or loss.... Depression is something that is as unique as the individual who suffers from it...It takes time for the meds to really settle into your system and for the results of the strain from going into the depression to pass or get better even a little or a lot depending on you.... Use what you can to get through this part of the journey...Find the inner strength that I know you can muster and if you need extra help we are here for you...message me if you need to...k.. You got this kid...Your soon going to get through this and see the changes and the reasons why you did such a drastic thing and be happy you did.... Give out extra hugs and kisses tonight and make them count....K

I showed my significant other this site!!

We'll always have PCOS, but the reduction in body weight means a reduction in insulin resistance. It may make conception easier for you, or it may be no change. I am one of the lucky few who has not suffered infertility...just weird cycles, multiple miscarriages(4 full term pregnancies in there too), weight gain since puberty, and some of the other less than feminine side effects.

    Question about liquid diet

Personally I'm glad my doc put me on the south beach diet before banding. It taught me better eating habits and I still lost a good amount of weight pre-op... it got me off the bread/sweets addictions. And, I didn't have any major weight gain when I started eating solids again after banding. I think I gained 1-2 pounds, whereas many people who do liquids pre-op will gain a good amount of weight back when they start to eat regular foods again.. and didn't learn how to eat properly before being banded... that's just my opinion though. (And my doctor's. LOL)

Need help with my Vitaminas please..:)

I wouldn’t advice on Bariatric Advantage Vitamins. They are a complete waste of money. They made me nauseous each time I took them. Worst of all the bottles did not have complete information on the ingredients. There was some info missing. I take Calcium in malate chelate 1200 mcg in a serving of 4 capsules, Multivitamins in multi-standard formula and 1 Vitamin b12 sublingual in the form of methylcobalamin with 1000mcg.I get all these vitamins from Vita4Life. As for Biotin supplement I would advise hair skin and nail vitamin from vita4life. They offer biotin and msm supplements that in combination work great for your hair skin and nails. I personally hate chewables. They make me barf each time and I hate the idea of chewing for over two minutes and then swallowing. As per weight gain, I have not noticed any after surgery. I guess it all depends on your diet.
  14. I am on Welbutrin and noticed a decrease in appetite when I started, it's one of the few that don't have weight gain as a side effect. It may be worth checking out?!

    weight gain around period?

I'm not banded yet, but I've always experienced either no weight loss or a little weight gain around my period. I don't weigh myself for a few days before until after my period. Your body retains a lot of water and is bloated. It'll go back down, and probably lower than pre period.

    weight gain

Yes, but it is not neccesarily a physical weight gain, I know some Dr's will cancel if the liver is to big because it obstructs their view and cause complications. I know alot of people prior to surgery take like a Meal Replacement to help with liver shrinkage. Have you seen the Bariatric Advantage Meal Replacements they are actually scientificaly proven to shrink liver. Here is the link, Bariatric Advantage - High-Protein Meal Replacement

Has anyone had their surgery pushed back because of weight gain?
  18. Hey all, super new here ! I have been struggling with getting the help from google, or locals who have been sleeved, so I am looking to gather more information to help make the best decision... I was sleeved in June of 2016 - I started at 286lbs, 5ft 6 in tall. Fast forward to now, I am 140lbs, and a BMI in the low 20s. I am active, thin, little loose skin, and LOVING the new life I have been blessed with...for 99% of the time... The kicker is the GERD symptoms I have are out of this world. I was someone who had this pre-op, and had I known what I know now I would have never agreed to the sleeve vs bypass. I have been in the midst of a whirlwind of testing..first my NEW bariatric dr suggested perhaps I have a flare up of the H. Pylori I was known to have after the stomach contents were biopsied, so we started with a stool test for that, thinking we will start small. This came back negative, and I then went in for a barium swallow which showed from his report to me, a "Massive" hiatal hernia in which he defiantly was interested in repairing. Then, I went in for a CTA to look for SMA Syndrome, basically the superior mesenteric artery compressing the duodenum - this was negative. Now, I am waiting on the ph & manometer testing to determine if I am a candidate to just have the hernia repaired by normal forms...but, Here inlays the questions I have, and personal experience is worth every bit to me. IF you have a hernia now (and DID NOT) have one prior to VSG - its causing you so much discomfort that you can not sleep, eating and swallowing pills has become challenging and you basically just refuse it all...what decision do you make..is a hernia repair going to be enough to cure this without the possibility of it returning..OR do you go with the revision to bypass to FIX it once and for all ? My dr has given me a lot of literature to go over and read and things to think about. I just don't know which is best. He has agreed to do either of these to help, provided my esophagus is operating in proper order following the results of my ph probe. He has asked that I TRY to maintain this weight and not lose any more, I am at the bottom of the scale where I ever wanted to be, frequently falling into the high 130s . Other questions I have are - am I going to lose more weight if I am revised to RNYBP? Will I have an intolerance to foods with ANOTHER new tummy? Will I need an open repair to revise this? also, if I choose the hernia repair will I end up with tighter restriction again with them using part of the tiny tummy I have to cuff at the top to fix the hernia? Is mesh safe to repair a hiatal hernia these days should that be the "fix" ? Has ANYONE been through this situation with these quirks. I don't need revision due to weight gain, I am already pretty small for my height. I have been this weight for 15 months or more. Please help! any insight or personal experience either way would be amazing.
  19. As anyone else gained a little weight during the 6 month supervised diet? I gained 4 lbs during the second month and haven't been able to lose it. I'm going into month 4 and am incredibly nervous about going through all of this just to be denied. I do have a letter from my PCP stating that I have trouble losing because my thyroid isn't yet regulated (I'm hypo). I'm 29 bmi of 40 with asthma. Back problems. Reflux. High cholesterol. Medicaid insurance. So nervous!
  20. 5/31/19 Oh, the journey I've traveled. It's been years since I last posted but I was such an avid contributor that I thought I'd "check in" again. My weight gain started after a very depressing first marriage & continued on through single parenthood. By the time I met my current husband (of almost 20 yrs now), I guess I was comfortable with myself & my terrible eating habits. I'm not sure I can pinpoint the moment I decided to have the gastric sleeve, but like many, I got to the point where I was so damn depressed that I didn't even want to go out. I didn't want to be seen or noticed. I was incredibly embarrassed with myself. Fast forward, I had my surgery around 2014. Became a weight loss facilitator hosting support meetings for newbies & post surgery. Started a demanding job that took me away from continuing the meetings only to wind up getting laid off 1 1/2 yrs later. Found a temp job but was very unhappy with the commute so I left. Here's where you need to pay attention. I wound up unemployed for almost 7 months. I became quite depressed and, guess what gained 25 pounds back. UGH, how could this happen, right? Easy. I feel back into old habits. I didn't watch what I was eating & I certainly didn't pay attention to portion control. Granted, I didn't eat a lot in the sense of how much I ate, but it was enough. Don't think for a minute that weight loss surgery is a quick fix. It's truly a tool & you are responsible for making it work for you. We all gain weight for many different reasons but I feel it almost always is a result of a psychological journey we're going through. Fortunately, once I was employed & allowed myself to become accountable to myself again, I started Weight Watchers. Yea, you would think I knew what I had to do to lose the weight again but I needed the support & something I could 'share' with others. Here I am, 4 months later & I lost the weight. Pheww... I'm 5'2 and my average weight is around 142 pounds. I may start those support meetings up again in the North Denver area. MIght be a great resource for many as it was when I first did it .

    Steroids

I also have RA and took steroids for 6 years and gain 100 lbs. I'm finally off of them & take orencia injections once a week. It doesn't cause weight gain. I was sleeved April 29. Ask your rheumatologist about starting a biologic like orencia. It has really been a life saver!!

    2 Years Post-op

I take Prilosec intermittently for reflux. It works beautifully, but it does block the absorption of some B Vitamins. I never heard anything about weight gain, nor have I experienced it. But when I do take the drug, I make sure & add B complex to my Vitamin regimen. For people with chronic reflux, taking Omeprazole (generic Prilosec) can save someone from permanent damage to the esophagus, and possibly even cancer. We hear about reflux so much, and it's not to be taken lightly. Typical protocol (in my experience) is to take it for 2-3 months until symptoms resolve, at the same time, working to find the cause of reflux in the first place. Obesity is one major cause, but there are others. Omeprazole is a complete acid blocker, and I'm not sure why your doctor would prescribe this prophylactically....unless you've had some issues where he/she thinks this is warranted. My doctor prescribed Pepcid for one month post-op; 1 tablet twice a day. Pepcid is milder, and does not block all acid production. However, since I take a prescription anti-inflammatory, he wants me to take it ongoing to protect my stomach lining. I would get clarification from your doctor, as to the reasoning for keeping you on this medication. And if the answer makes no sense to you, you may want to talk to a gastroenterologist.

    Depo-Provera

I was on Depo for three years and gained 80 pounds. Nothing I did was able to stop it. And I didn't attribute the weight gain to it at the time otherwise I would have stopped sooner. Had I known then what I do now I never would have gotten that shot, I am not completely blaming it for my 318lb self but it certainly did not help. My nurse ended up telling me that people who have a tendency to gain weight, will gain weight with Depo. It just seems so counter productive if you are having this procedure.

Pity party for more than 1?????

I gained 40 pounds before being diagnosed with hypothyroidism. That was on top of my already overweight body. What a drag. Having hypothyroidism really does screw with your body. The pounds were just flying on and I was eating very well and excercising. It was so depressing. Now that I'm on my medication the weight gain stopped and I had to bust butt to get those 40 pounds off. Hang in there.
