    April 2022 Surgery Buddies

I'm on stage 2 of liquids which allowed me to add in protein shakes, v8 and yogurt. I'm on that until the 2 week mark.

    April 2022 Surgery Buddies

Me too!!!!! How are you doing? I had my first yogurt today!
  3. Drink more fluids. On my liquid preop I was able to have pudding, can you? You need to increase your calories. Broths, jello, pudding, popsicles, melted creamy peanut butter, protein shakes, milk (if you can handle it). I ate up to about 1000 cal. This liquid diet is only meant to help shrink your liver. It’s not to make you lose weight. I know it’s hard. I’m on post op liquid diet. I want food so bad. I don’t know how much more pudding, jello and Greek yogurt I can do but I’m gonna keep doing it because it’s to help me heal safely. Question- if you’re able to lose weight eating healthy and exercising, why are you getting this surgery? Most people, like myself, have been unsuccessful doing that but you seem to have been enjoying it? If it was making you happy why surgery? No judgment I promise, just curious.

I tried but I cannot do fat free mayo....I would rather eat none. I tried this succesfully....I use real mayo and some greek yogurt. So in a can of tuna, I put about 1/2 mayo and 1/2 greek yogurt and it tastes pretty good. Much better than the fat free mayo which to me does not taste like mayo at all.

    1. Like many people, I weighed more when I left the hospital than when I checked in, due to the IV fluids. The number on the scale is meaningless for at least the first couple of weeks. I see people here all the time who are freaking out that they haven’t lost weight in the first week, but you need to have patience. The first few weeks are all about getting your protein and water. Don’t even look at the scale if it’s going to make you anxious. I lost 70 pounds before surgery. Nobody seemed to notice until I had lost over 100 pounds total (about 2 months after surgery), which was also about the time I had to buy new pants. But I started out really big (BMI over 60), so it might be noticeable more quickly if you have less to lose. 2. I was on liquids for the first week, so options were limited. I mainly had protein shakes, protein soups, sugar free Jello, and sugar free popsicles. In the puréed stage, I ate a lot of triple zero Greek yogurt and puréed refried beans with enchilada sauce (both with protein powder mixed in). 3. I went back to work 11 days after surgery and I felt good. As I lost more weight, I felt great, full of energy even though I was eating very little. Unfortunately, that started to change about a year post-op, and now I feel weak and tired all the time. 4. I went from not really exercising at all to working out every day. My recommendation for starting out is Leslie Sansone videos on YouTube (someone here recommended them to me). I started with 15-minute videos and now I do about an hour every day. I also got a Fitbit and have over 1 year of 10,000 steps per day. It is hard to stay motivated because sometimes I just don’t wanna, but at the same time, it gets easier the more weight you lose and the better shape you get into. This might be controversial, but it’s what works for me: I exercise every day. No days off. At least 30 minutes of cardio. To me, it’s easier keep it up when I tell myself I have to do it every day. Also, I used to work out when I got home from work. Now I work out first thing in the morning to get it out of the way and that’s a game changer. I wear my workout clothes to bed and put my pre-workout supplement on my nightstand. As soon as I wake up, I drink my pre-workout and start exercising.

    Food Before and After Photos

Today we’re road tripping to NY to pick up my dad’s belongings. Will be on the road a few days so I packed kid, adult, and grandma snacks. Lemon Blueberry cheesecake tarts, spinach ricotta rugelach, chocolate chip cookies, fruit salad, lemon poppyseed muffins, 6lbs of strawberries (because we won’t be home to use them), 3 clams of raspberries, Chex mix, chocolate covered granola bars, clementines, tuna packets, a skyr (for breakfast) 2 Greek yogurt bars, 8 protein shakes, individual salads, turkey, chicken breast, eggs, croutons, applesauce and yogurt pouches, and homemade pickles, zucchini chips and beef jerky. Kids also managed to sneak Reese’s pieces, Reese’s cups, gummy worms, airheads and Cadbury eggs into their luggage. 🤦‍♀️ I’ll eat again when we stop but today I’ve managed a protein shake, a rugelach a strip of jerky and about half the bag of zucchini chips (so about 2 zucchini!) Thank you all for the condolences, they’re much appreciated.
  9. Totally agree with a few of the suggestions in here- broth soups are vital to get some “savory” in as well. Minute miso and V8 were my friends, and I couldn’t find as many broth based soups as I wanted so I got a little hand held strainer and made my own. That hand held strainer was a godsend for post op as well. I just gave it away to a friend who had surgery last week- felt like passing the baton. 😂 Sugar free popsicles helped as well. The “two good” yogurt was good as well. And finally I tried to stay busy after work! Distracted myself with going shopping, home projects, taking kids to the park, etc. anything to avoid sitting around and craving food.

    Help with protein

I just came across these online from Walmart (has to be shipped) and in my opinion they are EXPENSIVE for what they are but if you're having a hard time getting the protein in its an option I guess if you are unable to do the other suggestions by all the other posters. If you have a Kroger store near you they also have them there but they are in bulk (36 count) and only 1 flavor that I saw. They are called ProSouce Gelatein and there are several flavors besides these two listed below at Walmart online. The Ratio Protein yogurt is much cheaper priced at Walmart and has several flavors, it has 25g of protein. Also at Walmart online BariWise gelatin. Not sure of the other stats on this one but it has 15g of protein
  11. Xylitol is a natural Sweetener and many Keto folks use it as stage substitute. But for some, it acts like a laxative and not tolerable. I am one such person. A spoon of xylitol is all is takes for my inside to start running. I was super constipated and my daily docusate didn't help. I tried miralax but it ended up giving me cramps and felt not so good. So decided to try xylitol and bam it did the trick. I keep using fiber supplement, do eat veggies/fruits (mostly pineapple) but milk/yogurt/cheese high protein diet does it for me and I continue getting constipated. I don't know what else I can do to have normal bowel movements since I do all I can along with walking most of the days 🤷🏻‍♀️ Any other means of solving this issue? Have you tried xylitol? I am sure daily use of xylitol isn't advisable but may be once a week use may be fine to get you the needed relief? May ask my nutritionist on my next appt but that's more than month away.

    Help with protein

I also struggled with protein shakes. Once I was allowed coffee, I began whisking chocolate protein powder in my morning coffee. I use chocolate Premier Protein powder. Two scoops is a serving (30 grams of protein). I use one scoop in each mug of coffee and usually have two cups in the morning. Coffee followed by some cottage cheese or yogurt later in the morning gets me close to 50 grams of protein before lunch. Like others have mentioned, I was also told not to worry too much about protein at this point. You will be able to consume a little more in time.

    Help with protein

Tofu and beans are good at the pureed level and after. They are high in protein. Another thing good protein source that I really like is PB powder. I would suggest peanut butter but it is high in fat, albeit good fat. I put PB powder in my smoothies, yogurt... Etc.

    Help with protein

Hello [emoji847] You are doing amazingly, well done! I am in the exact same position as you, I hate protein drinks of any kind with a passion. My surgeon told me not to panic over protein in the first few weeks, he said recovering and fluids are more important initially. I have followed his advice and haven't lost any muscle so far and I'm three weeks out. I drink glasses of cold milk with a scoop of skimmed powdered milk mixed in to add extra protein. I also add a tea spoon or two of it to my yogurts. I have mixed low fat dairylea cheese with mash and thin sliced ham. Mug of hot milk and coffee (although some say no coffee), cooked chicken in a casserole with carrots, onions, parsnips, sweet potato, butternut squash and lots of peas and a few lentils for extra protein. This was cooked in a pot in the oven, or it could go in a slow cooker, and cooked until the vegetables were extremely soft. Easy to eat, a tonne of nutrients and vitamins and plenty of protein all in one meal. I also don't mind eating low fat cottage cheese in various flavours. Hope this help you [emoji3059] Sent from my SM-G980F using BariatricPal mobile app

    Rny patients....& Taste change

Thank you! Yeah my nutritionist said it's due to the hormones changing in the gut but omg! My case is extreme. I hate any kind of meat, cheese...I can't do yogurt or sour cream ...seems like literally nothing I like anymore. My days consist of protein shakes and maybe fruit once in a blue moon. It's mentally challenging to me.

    Help with protein

Hello all. I am two weeks post op. My surgeon combines the full liquid and puree stage. He said at week 3 I can start soft foods. I love yogurt now. I found a no sugar added 25g protein yogurt. I eat half for breakfast with my meds and chewable vitamin since it had iron and iron on a stomach with no food will make you nauseated. So there's 25g of protein. I drink enough water cause I loooove water so that's not an issue. The Issue is I am not hitting the protein req. I've never liked Protein shakes, they've always tastes bad. Since the surgery though Protein shakes make me nauseated just thinking about one. I tried today to force one down. Three sips in I was on the verge of vomiting and 10 minutes later was dry heaving. The thought of the shakes make me almost vomit. Idk what to do here. Even protein powders have the same effect. I tried the protein soups too same effect. I don't think my body tolerates that kind of protein. What do I eat? I tried a scrambled egg (pureed even further) it went down ok but I don't really like eggs and they're only 6g of protein. Also I still can't eat much at a time. I think I max out at 3 oz of yogurt. I've been subsisting on yogurt mainly. I tried tuna as well (made a tuna salad) tolerated that like a champ. Issue with canned tuna is you WILL get mercury poisoning from it. Three cans in a week can cause mercury poisoning. I got some expensive canned tuna that SAYS it's been mercury tested to be within 0.1 part per million and a can is 40g of protein. Since they want you to not drink water 30 before or after eating I'm also thirsty. I always want to drink water. I always have this is not new post op, I've always been this way. It's like torture not drinking water. So mainly I'm asking what can I eat to help with protein? Any tips on helping with the water issue? I just don't know what to do. I'm tired of being nauseated all the time.
  17. V, If you are sensitive to the cottage cheese and yogurt please pause the use of the Whey Protein Powder. They are all the same protein type. You can research Pea Protein, Egg Protein, Vegan. I’m sure your dietitian or doctor gave you a list of preferred brands. Whey Isolates are easily absorbed so they normally top the lists. Look for a low carb alternative. Just buy samples until you find the right one for you. Re-reading the post about the cottage cheese and yogurt was the red flag for my nurse brain. Hope this helps! T
  18. Hi Tina! I've never had an issue with sugar free gelatins or liquids. Those are staples of my diet and have been for years. What I was suspecting was causing this was all the almond milk and all the yogurt. I normally don't eat that. And I LOVE cottage cheese and eat it regularly even before this diet, but just last week my GI doctor said he suspected I may be somewhat allergic to cottage cheese, milks and yogurts. So I'm torn between following this pre-op diet that is sooo limited but some of the little liquids I'm allowed to have may be causing issues...but I'm not a surgeon and I can't just dictate what's best for me in order to undergo this surgery. I actually just got imodium per my GI's recommendation. I should take that right now! Thank you for the idea, I hadn't thought of it. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with me.

    Bad cravings after sleeve

4 oz water mixed with 1 scoop of Muscle Milk powder 3x per day for 2 weeks. Foods like yogurt and oatmeal get introduced in week 3, but I'll continue drinking 2-3 protein shakes per day depending on how well I tolerate the actual food. No more protein shakes from the start of week 4 onward.
  20. Our guidelines say food should have less than 3 g fat/5g sugar. No daily recommendations that I have seen. They recommended Greek light & fit or carbmaster yogurts. I can’t find a light & fit that meets this, so I get nonfat plain Greek yogurt instead.

    Food Before and After Photos

A grocery haul- So I did most of my weekly shopping today and thought I’d share. This is for myself and 4 kids. I spent $125.19US and got $5.75 in cash back rewards so just under $120US total. 10lbs strawberries 5 pints blueberries 5 half pints raspberries 2 English cucumbers 4 zucchini 4 bell peppers 10oz Bag of spinach 5oz Bag of kale Bag of shredded carrots 6 individual yogurt cups 3 8oz bags reduced fat Mexican cheese blend 4 Gatorade real hydrations Olive Garden light Italian dressing New Primals BBQ sauce Unsweetened coconut flakes 1.5lbs shaved beef 5-count pack protein bars 2 12-count toaster pastries 1 16-count cereal treat bars A bag of Twix popcorn 2 Twix candy bars stovetop popcorn kit A pack of taki meat sticks Pack of cookies Not pictured- 5 boxes brownie mix (for work goodies as they were on sale) 5 24-count cases of water (we have hard well water) 3 2-liter bottles Diet Pepsi A 4-count box ice cream cones A 2.5lb bag chicken tenderloins (already in the slow cooker)
  22. That's great you can have cottage cheese and yogurt! My surgeon only allows protein, water, sugar free jello and broth, which doesn't allow for any real "chewing." I am on day three of my liquid diet. Instead of plain jello, I made Knox Blox. You can look up the recipe online. It's basically just jello but you add extra unflavored gelatin to make the jello more like gummy bear texture. It has really helped me because I am a texture person and I have to have something to chew! My favorite protein shake is the pre-made Shamrock Farms, Rockin Protein. It is pricey at some places, but I found it at Target for $1.99 per bottle and because it tastes so much better - NOT at all chalky - I do not mind paying extra! It comes in vanilla and chocolate. I love both flavors.
  23. Congrats on reaching this stage! I found that isopure was pretty good when blended using a blender, a milk you like/tolerate, maybe some yogurt, ice and things like unsweetened cocoa powder, sugar free syrups or decaf espressos. You can make protein frappes so to speak by mixing up ingredients. In my liquid, puree and soft I did vanilla and caramel protein frappes using sugar free coffee syrups and decaf espresso. You can also mix isopure into things like yogurt and soup. Great way to get protein, 25 grams per serving and no taste. I found that post op premier and quest protein shakes were wayyyy to sweet. If I didn't blend my own shakes, I bought the chocolate ensure max because it has 30 grams and sorta kinda taste like chocolate milk. You can also blend that with ice and it makes it like a milkshake. The slim fast orange cream Low carb shake blended with ice is really yummy. Taste like fruity pebble milkshake. If you're sick of the sweet stuff, try broth make from bouillon cubes (more tasty than broth cartons). I've never had bone broth. I hear it's an acquired taste but supposedly some benefits to having it, maybe try mixing it into your regular broth for a full meaty flavor to differentiate from the sweet shakes. Anyway. That and sugar free popsicles got my through my liquid diet. It was nice to chew on something and I never want to see another popsicle again in my life LOL. I find that orange flavored popsicles caused some acid reflux but I had that pre op so it might be just me. Best of luck to you. The hardest part is getting through the first month after surgery but it goes by fast, you develop a routine and you see the scale go down so it's all worth it. I'm 3 months post op and back to regular eating. The only difference is I focus on protein, get full pretty fast and the weight actually comes off. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app
  24. I'm so happy and relieved to hear that! 🙂 I'm definitely feeling hungry at the moment. So far have had: yogurt, 1 protein shake, and pudding...doesn't help that I'm at work and had to pre-pack and pre-make everything not knowing exactly how it'll go. I packed broth in a protein cup and I'm sure that won't be very yummy...
  25. If you could go back in time and warn/educate your younger self on how to best stick to the all liquid pre-op diet, what tips and tricks would you share? My all liquid pre-op diet started today. I'm allowed: 3-4 shakes (pre-made or via protein powders) Water Clear protein waters Crystal Light mixers and such Gatorade, Vitamin Water, Propel Sugar-free gelatin Sugar-free pudding Sugar-free popsicles Light Greek yogurt Fat-free cottage cheese Broth Herbal teas ANY ADVICE/HELP IS GREATLY APPRECAITED! I feel like I can succeed, but I've always known THIS would be the hardest part of my journey. So far, these are some of the tricks I've come up with (but I'm a newbie, and I know you pro's out there have GOT TO HAVE SOME SOLID TIPS AND TRICKS!): Make your protein shakes with some light Greek yogurt to change the consistency Add bullions to your broths to add some flavor and eat them hot Try ramen and miso broths Make your own sugar-free gelatin/pudding in your own Tupperware so you can just sit there and eat that in order to confuse yourself into thinking you're eating a solid meal Tracking my food in a nutrition journal to better understand when I'm hungry/how often I'm eating Some questions I already have: What pre-made protein shakes are worth the $$$? What protein powders did you really enjoy, are not chalky, and are worth the $$$? I ended up buying 4 different protein powders from 2 brands (brands: SinFit and Motiv8). THANKS FOR ANY AND ALL HELP!
