  2. Hey all. I'm 3 days post-op and can't feel the difference between trapped gas and being full. What should I be looking for? The trapped gas has improved a lot, but I still have an uncomfortable feeling under my left rib cage. I'm shooting for an ounce of liquid every 10-15 minutes. I also have to use a spoon full of applesauce to get some of my medication down.

    Stall?

that's under your control. You can always increase your calories and stop the weight loss. However, keep in mind that most of us experience a 10-20 lb rebound gain after hitting our lowest weight. Also, rebound or not, things do sort of shift around during year 2 or 3 so that you don't look as gaunt. I looked really thin after hitting bottom at month 20 - but things did shift around - and then I put on about 20 lbs quickly sometime during year 3. So suffice it to say, I wouldn't really worry about losing too much weight. A lot of long-timers who looked too gaunt during year 2 didn't look that way once they hit year 3 or 4 (honesty, there are days I wish I was still that thin!)

    Little to no weightloss

OK - breathe. Weight loss isn't linear. Everyone - *EVERYONE* hits stalls regularly. They are part of the journey. It seems to me from what you've said OP that you have lost 18lbs in 11 weeks since your surgery. Which is already amazing. Why are you calling that rubbish? 6 weeks post MY op I had lost 15lbs. But that turned out to be a tiny proportion of what I went on to lose in the next 18 months. I also had almost 10 stone to lose. If you can focus on your long term goal it will be no time until you're there, or almost there. I wish you all the luck in the world. If you stick to the rules you've been given then you have every chance to achieve your goal weight. 😍

    Little to no weightloss

Thank you for taking the time to reply to me. I have 10 stone to lose. My surgery weight was 21 stone 9lb and 11 weeks later I weight 20 stone 5lb. So really rubbish weigthloss in 11 weeks, with weeks of no losses. I haven’t lost any weight in the last 4 weeks. I’m just seriously fed up. I understand stalls happen and weightloss is different for everyone. I took the no weightloss for the first 3 weeks and took it on the chin. I then kept reading to trust the process which I have for the previous 4 weeks and still no weightloss. I’m not living my life at all and haven’t been for years as the weight really affects my confidence. I’m not sure I can carry on for the next years to come if this weight doesn’t come off. Seems like it won’t and like my body has just adjusted to the new calories and storing it all. My only hope is fasting at this point. My last hope in all seriousness. I'm really sorry you’re going through a stall at the moment. I will keep my fingers crossed it’s a short term stall for you and you’ll be back losing before you know it. It’s very deflating.
  10. I am so fed up. I am 10 weeks post op. I didn’t lose any weight in the first 3 weeks. Very odd as it was liquid only. Between weeks 4-7 I lost just over a stone. Since week 7, and I am now nearly 11 weeks post op, I haven’t even lost 1lb. I am not drinking calories, I am sticking to the NHS guidelines and my dietician. No slider foods. High protein, low fat and hitting my fluid goals each day. Literally feel like my last draw is gone. I keep reading to trust to the process and I’ve carried on but weeks of no weightloss has no meant that I have started a water only diet, fasting as it seems my body will not lose weight if I put any food in my body. I have never felt so depressed or let down. I could understand if I was eating he wrong things, or eating too much, too little. Wondering if it’s hormonal and that’s the reason I’ve struggled for years with weightloss and gaining Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Lap band issues

I have had no issues for 10+ years. 1 week ago I had a stomach bug and vomited a lot one night and instantly started burping. Ever since then I’ve had weird GI issues and burping a lot. Nausea and bloating when eating solids sometimes. But I can eat just fine- no changes there. Any ideas? I’m hoping it’s just inflammation from irritation of vomiting but not sure how long that would last. Any help appreciated

Surgery Shaming Should Be A Thing…

I guess we're all different (and it depends a lot on the "culture" of the people we encounter), but definitely the worst amount of shade I received was from a woman who lives a very "adventurous" lifestyle who I imagine has never struggled with her weight whatsoever, who is one of those thin people who looks at anyone with a few extra pounds as a moral failure. She treated me like I'd told her I'd gotten a completely-cosmetic procedure, and with all the judgement that implies. I feel like people who have been thin most of their lives but have experienced "success" at losing 10-15 pounds at some point don't understand how different it is to need to lose 100, 200 pounds and how that is a much bigger, difficult task.
  14. I reached goal and decided to stop. I was eating about 800 cals at the time. i admit it was a little challenging to up my calories...a combination issue with my own stomach restriction and the unanticipated mental block of having to actually eat more. it took me another 3 or so months (and another 10+ lbs lost) to figure out how many calories i needed to consume to keep my weight steady. it was well over 2000 cals at that time (i exercised alot!) I ate alot of low volume/higher cal foods to get around my restriction. Fast forward another year or so when my exercise/activity drastically reduced and then had to figure out again what my maintenance calories were. Settled into 1800-2000 and that is where i am at now (am 4.5+ yrs out). I still track my food intake and weigh myself every morning (which i credit to helping me figure stuff out when a "tweaking" is required.)

    Best Post-Op gift ideas?

My biggest suggestion is to just be patient and supportive over the first few weeks...all those bodily changes can have some really, um...interesting effect on the mood! My mom got me a bunch of gift cards for clothes after my surgery and I appreciated it so much...after being overweight for years it was actually fun to go try and figure out what my personal style was when I wasn't as hamstrung by having to find the few items in the store that fit me. (19 months later I'm still trying to figure that out, but I'm learning!) Another suggestion for gifts might be a nice bariatric-friendly lunchbox or meal prep stuff for when he returns to work and starts eating a wider variety of foods. Having ways to transport your meals is important!

  18. I may need to change my name and profile pictures. I assumed I would be struggling to drink water and protein shakes and eating tiny food portions but that's not the case. So far, no nausea. No feeling of food restriction. I guess I should be happy that I can eat comfortably with no appetite and so I'm banking on the surgery itself to do it's part changing my setpoint, metabolism, insulin resistance etc. In 10 days I will move into regular food phase. Maybe then the restriction may kick in.

  19. It is surreal walking into a regular clothing store and not needing to ask where or if they have plus size clothing. I bought size 14 old navy pants and I LOVE them. They are high waist button up. 10-11 months ago I was 24-26.

    Weight Loss Patterns?

where did you hear that the average is 5-15 lbs a week? NO ONE loses that fast. Maybe 5 lbs a week the first MONTH (and it wouldn't be five lbs each and every week - most of us experience the dreaded "three week stall" - but a 15-25 lb loss the first month seems to be pretty average, unless you're the size of someone on "My 600 lb Life". After that drop the first month, you'll settle to into a slower rate for a few months, maybe 10 lbs a month, give or take, for the next few months - and then it'll slow even further. so I don't know where you heard that figure, but it's not accurate. You need to adjust your expectations or you're going to be frustrated and disappointed. As long as you comply with your clinic's plan, the weight will come off. Don't stress over this and more importantly, don't burn yourself out - you don't want to crash and burn. Just follow the plan. Depending on your starting point, it can take a year or more to get to goal - it took me 20 months. You want to jeopardize your health.

    Stall and it is awful!

i wondered if it was a combination of a stall & the expected slow down of your weight loss too.. Those last pounds can seemingly take forever to go. Yep, exercise accounts for about 10% of your weight loss. So exercising will only contribute to the loss of about 3lbs of your last 35. I get not having the time or energy to exercise after work. I was the same plus I really detest it. I discovered exercise snacking. That is exercise in short bursts a few times a day. I do about four sessions a day lasting 5-10mins each & totalling about 20-25mins. (After lunch, before & after dinner & before bed.) They found that short bursts are just as effective as a single sustained exercise session. They’re much easier to fit around the demands of your day & much less an onerous task (which is how I saw exercise).

Those are pretty over whelming diagnoses. I would start with one of your doctors and ask for advice, and for an appointment with a nutritionist who is knowledgable about people who have had a gastric sleeve. Your nutritional needs have changed as your diagnoses have caused havoc on your body. The Hashimotos especially. You probably need to have a CBC and have levels taken for vitamins and minerals and keep track of your where your Thyroid levels are at. Then come up with a plan that you feel comfortable with. I am more than a dozen years out and had significant regain, and then have re-lost my gains and more. I too had some medical issues to overcome, and still do. But I made the re-losing at MY OWN pace. Which was comparatively SLOW to losing after surgery. I took a few years to lose the first 45 pounds I had put on, and then look another couple years to get where I am now. But I took long breaks after losing each 10 pounds at first to make sure I could maintain that loss. I purposely stopped losing and did maintenance for a few months. Then made a goal of losing another 10. Then did the same thing. The last year or so my goals were even smaller. Because it WAS harder. But I am at a healthy place and myself and my doctors are very pleased. I have to have blood work done every few months to make sure I am maintaining certain values, so there is that. But I work with my GP who has been wonderfully supportive.
