    Confused: Lapband or Sleeve

I agree. I'd love to find just one band patient that has had their band for 10 years without complications, another surgery, a 2nd band, or the ever popular "band issues". I was able to find 1 band patient on OH that had her band for almost 9 years, she is on her 2nd band, and now is going in for a revision to the sleeve. She just "lived" with the band issues because she thought it was a fair trade off to lose the majority of her weight. For me, it's not about doing well, or losing _____% of my excess weight. It boils down to quality of life. Not being able to eat a good, healthy balanced diet because certain foods would not go down, or the ever lovely puking on the same food I ate the day before without issue. For me, that is not a high and pleasurable quality of life. Not to mention all of the maintenance, in and out for fills and unfills trying to find the sweet spot. The stats on revisions for sleeve patients that have been documented at 5-7 years out is between 3-5% vs. 25% with the band. For me, that speaks volumes. We all know someone or several that have done well with each WLS option. Unfortunately, I know way more people that have complications or "band issues" than I know true success stories. It is a personal choice. You have to weigh all the pros and cons. Look at the big picture, and then proceed. My mom has a band, and is almost 3 years out. She pukes 2-4 times weekly. Lives on mushy, soft solids, can't eat lettuce or bread, and forget chicken. She's had over 20 fills/unfills trying to find the sweet spot, and still at almost 3 years out she has 40 pounds to goal. BUT, per the stats, she's considered a success. I just hope she doesn't screw up her stomach tissue along the way by just "dealing/living" with band issues. On the other hand, my younger brother has a band also and is about 15 months out, he's lost over 100lbs and doesn't have any of the band issues with the exception of eating certain foods. Unfortunately, he hates getting the fills at this point so he's on a forced diet because they can't get the fill right on him either. If I wanted to diet, I wouldn't have gone through WLS to begin with. Think twice, cut once.

    1st fill on Monday......

I have also been able to eat and drink whatever I want for the past two weeks, and your right, ITS NOT GOOD!! I get my first fill on May 2nd. I cant wait cause I am afraid to gain back everything I lost pre-op. I have actually been treating these two weeks like "last supper" meals of all my favorites. I know I shouldnt but...... Good Luck to you!!!

    Frustrated by progress

Well it's been almost three weeks since your surgery. So that infamous "3 week stall" was going to happen. People stall either at 3 weeks or a little before that. But the weight loss will start back up again. I know my stalls lasted a week each time and for me to break them, I either needed more of something like more protein or I needed more exercise. There are other ways to break stalls besides those options but you're in the very beginning stages and right now, it's not really advisable to try them. Hw-273 Sw-226 CW-124 GW-130 Size- 2, Small in sweats. Small in shirts. depends on how it's cut or made. Bra Size- 34C Surgery Date- April 26th, 2017 RNY "Only those who try will become" FFX
  5. Thanks for the words... Im trying to gain strength!!
  6. Yup, this! I have a lap band and my weight loss rate is much slower than someone who had RNY. For one thing, I'm not 100% restricted yet - probably about halfway there as I can still eat ~2500 calories a day. But that's less than my standard 3500 calorie diet so I consider that to be a win either way. It's enough of a difference that I lose about a pound a week. I'd lose about a pound a week through diet and exercise alone. The only difference (right now) is that I'm not suffering like I did before I had my band placed. Weight loss used to be torture. Now it just kind of happens, which is great! I'm looking forward to increased restriction so I can lose weight even faster but for now 1 pound a week is better than 0 pounds a week, or worse, weight gain! Now if you have RNY, you get the benefits of reduced absorption in addition to restriction and that helps the weight come off faster. So yes, it depends on the type of surgery you have. Regardless of what type it is, you will lose weight and just remember that any loss is good. Don't get discouraged if it's not as fast as you hope While it would be absolutely lovely to get to my goal weight in a couple months it just ain't gonna happen. It took a long time for me to get this fat, and it'll take a long time before I'm normal again.

    Hair loss...

I I was going to take my boys for a haircut and I decided I would get a haircut myself since I am losing so much of it. I have worn my hair long the majority of my life so I had to mentally get ready to chop a lot of it off. So I have some pics of haircuts I like and I ask the stylist if any of them will work on me and she says yes absolutely. So I explain to her that I'm losing hair since I had 'surgery' without mentioning what kind or for what reason. She proceeds to tell me about her friend's Mom who had that 'tummy surgery' and how you look at her and you 'can see right through her hair to her scalp'. So as I'm sitting there horrified that I could end up in that same situation she continues to say how the woman has lost something like 120 pounds so overall 'she traded the weight loss for hair loss' and maybe if she had just really 'tried on her own by eating less and hitting the gym' she wouldn't be dealing with it. Then she switches gears to say my hair is still thicker than her own hair so she can't imagine what it was before it started thinning and therefore she's jealous of me. I was literally SPEECHLESS!!! First of all, I'm far from normal weight range yet even given how much I've lost so why she would openly discriminate against fat/overweight/obese people I don't have the first clue! Secondly, to then not miss a beat and use the expression that she's jealous? Boggles my mind that she would say that to a relative stranger. I haven't had a stylist for a long time because I've kept my hair low maintenance so long. This was a random stylist just on the fly. It's so disappointing to experience that kind of discrimination and small mindedness. A friend warned me about those kind of experiences since she had RNY but to experience it firsthand is something else I guess the silver lining is while I'm losing hair, it's not as bad as I perceive it and the cut looks good. I had to focus on that to not get visibly upset and lose my temper by debating the woman about the choice to have WLS.
  8. before surgery I was a slow looser at best. diet, exercise. I could get down to a certain point, maybe 230 and then I would put that same 30 pounds back on again. rinse. repeat. x 10 years almost. Now, I am finally breaking through that point and onwards lower. It *feels* both too slow (30 pounds down since surgery almost) and too fast (my mind keeps thinking where is the rest of me?) but honestly 30 pounds in 2 months is NOT slow! it is also 1/3 of my excess weight. So, I keep going with the plan and I'll see where it takes me. Diabetes is gone, and I weigh less than my wonderful husband, so it's all good from this point on!
  9. I had my surgery on 6/21/17, starting weight of 216 I am now 185! Thats about 30lbs. I am so happy I did this despite my fear of having my gut rearranged lol. I have more energy and I am already able to come off 2 of my medications! I am still trying to balancing fruits, veggies, water and protein! I find myself getting constipated. My surgeons office says take milk of magnesia but I think I would like to try something a bot mor natural like prunes or prune juice. Has anyone struggled with this at this stage? I could use the support and thank you in advance for replying! [emoji151] Sent from my SM-J320P using BariatricPal mobile app

    Rant/Vent: Failure

Hey OP - I’m in the same position as you but a bit further out. Sleeved in March 2015. HW 290, lost 112. Gained back about 20 by last Christmas and then over the past year have gained another 25. I now work from home all day since the pandemic which was a disaster: I could snack on unhealthy things all day long! But all you or I can do is get back on track little by little. We’re not failures. We’re human and we’re fallible. I’ve noticed that it’s when I feel like a failure I eat worse. Makes sense right? If I think poorly of myself why would I foresake instant gratification for long term benefits? I’m a failure so I don’t deserve that care, right? Nope. That negativity is as much a challenge as chocolate!!! I can’t give any advice since I’m in the same boat as you. But remember how awesome you are. You took one of the biggest decisions - to have life altering surgery - because future you deserved it. You lost weight. You have achieved tons. You are not a failure. And you deserve all of the good stuff that’s going to happen when you start to make good decisions to get back on track.

    Rant/Vent: Failure

I'm right there with you. I had my sleeve in December of 2018, lost a fair amount of weight, not a ton, but it was slow-going and stopped after four months. I kept it off for 15 months. Then during COVID I put on 10-12 pounds and I'm having a hard time taking them off. I want to kick myself for going through major surgery only to screw it up again because I'm such a loser. But then I focus on what I need to be doing and get back on track and have been doing really well for the last 15 days. You can do it. Go back to basics. Get the protein in. Get the water in. Watch the portion sizes. You can do it!

I'm sorry you're going through a tough time right now. I agree with what the others have said. Also, I wanted to point you to a post from @BriarRose because she's been right where you are and she succeeded in re-losing the weight. I know it can seem hopeless, but she's proof it can be done!

Welcome to the stall. As stated, your body WILL go through periods of "stall" or "re-calibration". If you have the means, get yourself a scale that does body fat as well. Once you transition to heavier/solid foods, and once you start hitting the gym more, you are going to potentially see more "gains"... for me, I weigh in every day, some days I increase, but body fat will decrease. So as long as 1 of the 2 sets of numbers is decreasing, I'm ok with that. As long as you are getting in the proper amounts of water, protein and exercise, you'll be just fine.

    Milestone Pic

From my surgery on September 23, 2013 until now has been a long journey, and I have roughly between 30 - 40 more miles to go! The ride has been slow, but I've lost 75 lbs. along the way. Were there bumps and potholes in the road? Yes, lots of them! LOL But, I learned to shift gears to ease over the bumps, and go around the potholes! This journey is not only about losing weight, but more about changing the way I think about food, and as my thinking changed the ride became a lot smoother!

    Encouragement needed urgently!

I suspect that while you were in the hospital, you had an I.V. hooked to you. This pumped fluids into your body. As a result you probably left the hospital weighing more then when you first entered. It takes a few days for you to shed this added weight and get back to your pre-surgery weight. So give it a little time.
  16. Thank yOu so much for sharing your journey so far with us!!! I'm being sleeved tomorrow and am so worried about social events and fitting it in to my daily life. My BF is a big eater and lives to cook but stays very slim! And I am concerned about the effect it will have on our social life so it's good to hear there is light at the end of the tunnel! I can really see your weight loss you look great so keep up the good work!!! X xx x
  17. :biggrin:Just picked up recipes for Life After Weight Loss Surgery: Delicious Dishes for Nourishing the New You by Margaret Furtado at Barnes and Noble last night... excited to try some of these recipes! I know there are other cookbooks out there for WLS... any favorites? I LOVE to cook, and would love an army of healthy recipes I can make for the whole family... I love to cook but I'm not cooking 2 dinners a night!

    Fill #2 Today

Hi Vicki - I go today too - for fill #3 I'm aggravated however b/c I've been really watching what I eat and logging it in an app - Lose It - and the scale hasn't moved in two weeks! I'm hoping that this fill really tightens me up and I'll eat even less - but i haven't been eating over 1200 calories - plus going to the gym for 30-60 minutes of cardio exercise and just started light weights with a trainer... I'm not going to let this derail me - but DAMN - what's it going to take! I'm also curious about my band - like I wonder if it will ever do what it does for success - we'll see how this fill goes - I'm already at 6cc's in a 10 cc band - he'll probably put 2cc's in today. Glad we're on this together - I'm down 22lbs too.

    Encouragement needed urgently!

First of all, take a deep breath and calm down. I had my bypass on August 19th and I have suffered from severe clinical depression for 55 years (I will be 61 on Oct 3rd). I have been back to the hospital 2 times for severe UTI and gained weight with all those fluids they pumped into me both times. You WILL lose this weight. It's only been 6 days. Your body is still in shock and will be for some months to come. You WILL lose weight. In 5 weeks i have lost 30 lbs. Are you seeing a therapist to help you through? I've been seeing one for the last 6 months to help me through this process. Plus, I have image problems I need to get through (I have lost 60 lbs pre-op and post-op, yet in my mind i see no difference ... just a very fat woman). But I am getting better. Depression makes this journey so much harder, but we CAN get through it. Stay POSITIVE! Stay COMMITTED! Get your weight taken and take measurements. I may not see any difference in my body, but I know in my mind I have lost 20+ inches, and that keeps me going. I have started fitting into the clothes I have outgrown and that keeps me going. Other people notice a difference and that keeps me going. Give yourself some time, hon. You didn't get where you are all at once and it won't disappear all at once. Be patient. Drinking the shakes you can't help but lose weight. When you get further down the road you can start exercising, which not only helps with weight loss but helps you feel better, too. If there is anything I can do or if you ever want anyone to talk to, give me a shout. We Libra's gotta stick together!! (((BIG HUG)))
  20. Hard to believe it's been three months. Today I hit 70 lbs lost. Starting Weight: 311 Surgery Weight: 292 Weight Today: 240.2 Weight Loss: 70.8 lbs Target Weight: 205 My favorite NSV is buying and wearing normal clothes again. I'm a regular XL now in most shirts, and I have a brand new pair of 38 jeans that are actually loose on me. How many?

My NUT told me to focus on meeting my Protein goal of 80 and not exceed 50 carb grams. Also wants me to avoid any products with added sugar. I find that I lose weight when I am having between 700 to 900 calories. If I have less, I don't lose weight. I was told the body goes on a saving mode when calories are too low. Not sure if this is true. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  23. I'm 3 weeks post-surgery and have been following "the rules" to the letter. As I progress down this path, I'm becoming concerned I will be very disappointed with the average VCG weight loss. I've read many posts and it seems that the high average loss is around 75% of excess weight. At 75% loss, I would be about 30 pounds short of my personal goal. Would love some feedback from those who are several months post-op. What percentage of your excess weight did you lose and are you OK with that? If anyone has lost close to 100% of excess, to what do you attribute your outstanding success? Thanks!
  24. Yes I am on disability. I will probably find some work when I have list mire weight but as of now my pain level will only allow me to Do so much. I'm too heavy for a bike right now. I Luke the idea of the games ans finding a hobby. I would live to paint but finAncially its hard to buy all that stuff. I never thought about freezing my smoothies!! That's a great idea. I love popsicles!! thanks for all the great advice!!!

    Liquid diet day 2 sucks!

GrandDaddy is so right!!! And I made a list of all the reasons why I wanted to lose Weight, and every time I wanted to eat I read my list. And I probably read that list 5-6 times an hour those first few days. I just busied myself when I felt the head hunger try and take over. The rewards are so much greater, I dropped 16 pounds on my 2 week pre-op. And I was so proud I did it. You ca do it to. I have faith in you ????good luck ????
