Someone tell me to toughen up!!
badonkadonkbutt replied to badonkadonkbutt's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
You did PM me about Atkins and I thought about giving it a try. My only concern is if I can stick to it till July when we submit to insurance.....I am worried I can't stick to it that long and if not, I am afraid I will gain back weight and the insurance will frown upon it. I am trying to just lose the weight without any drastic changes like cutting out carbs completely. I think I would be crushed if I lose the weight and started to gain it back again. I don't know if I could handle that. I am seriously thinking about trying it though..... By the way, did you see what you wrote: '900 lately due to forgetting to eat till later in the day'. Did you ever think you would say something like this! That is awesome, you are making awesome progress!!!! -
Another thing that my nutritionist told me was that you need to keep your metabolism 'fueled' by eating at least 3 times a day at regular intervals. One of my pre-surgery issues was only eating when I was hungry--about once a day. Not good for weight loss efforts. I'm sure you will be able to do whatever is necessary to qualify for your surgery. Someone tell me to toughen up!!
badonkadonkbutt replied to badonkadonkbutt's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Ya, I have been using fitday to do it.....I am averaging between 1200 and 1500 calories a day. I can back this off some more, but according to my weight it says I should eat 1800 per day and my doctor warned me about cutting back to much too fast. She said I should stay at 1500 per day....I thought that was high from what I have been reading on here. I was afraid that if I dropped weight too fast, it would come back on before I submit to insurance, but I only have June to lose the weight or else I can't submit in July for approval.....do you think I should cut back my calories some more? -
If I have a craving and it won't go away after a day or two, I indulge it....but cautiously. I've found that if I don't, I eat too much of everything....rather than feed the craving and I'm fine. Weight Watchers makes great frozen Desserts and popsicle makes these sugar free fudge bar pops. But sometimes when I want crunch, I have those rice cakes that have caramel coating or cheese coating. If I just have to have it...I eat whatever. I had nachos and cheese dip last weekend- the real stuff.

I have a dear friend that is 61 and Kaiser insurance. She is in need of losing a lot of weight . She has had hip replacement surgery, has apnea, asthma, gosh, just too many things. I told her I was going to have a lapband put in, she thinks that because I am 42 of course I get approved for mine but for herself she thinks they may deem her too old. Anyone here deal with Kaiser in their 60s? thanks

Can I Get Banded At 5'4 195 Lbs ?
Mayasgram replied to adkpugmom's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The Lap band is not a diet . It is a life changing event and it is not a walk in the park it takes lots of dedication and a life style change. I wish I had a dollar for everytime someone says wow I want one, it must be so easy and I explained to them what the process involves and that the surgery is the easy part. There are foods I just can not eat anymore,1. I don't go out and order what everyone elses orders, 2. the portions are just huge, 3. I eat Protein first and by the time I chew it to pass my band I am full. 4. certain food are NO No's for me Bread just doesn't go down for some people it does never has for me. 5. liquids with a meal defeats your purpose. 6. You still have to eat healthy. 7. You have to excercise and be active.8. You can and will get stuck at sometime. 9. you will have moments when you wonder why you did this.10. eventually it will cost you $$ for fills and unfils. I love my band, but I always tell people who think it"s the answer for them the truth , it takes dedication, and it is definently not for some one who wants to just lose weight. You need to be ready to change your life, for me it was the best thing I ever did for me..but if you read this site some folks have a difficult time living the banded life.......... -
Quick update - After my third fill (October 2012) I got stuck with everything I ate (7.2 cc in 14 cc band). I toughed it out for a while but then had 0.3 cc removed in December and 0.5 cc removed in March. I gained about 8 pounds back during this time. I was eating a lot of potato chips since they did not get stuck. Last week I got filled back up to 7.2, stopped buying and eating the chips and the scale shows 3 pounds lower this morning! I'm hoping my time in the wilderness is over. At the first information session the doctor talked about the addictive nature of food and how some bandsters end up substituting one addiction for another, mentioning alcohol. I never thought I'd have a potato chip addiction! Cold turkey got me off it and now I don't go near them at the store for fear they will jump into my basket. Thanks for all your posts - they're very encouraging.

Shortie Porties--Banders that are short!
Emilysgigi replied to PigsRFlying's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I'm a shortie portie too! I am 5'1&1/2". Or as I like to call it, 5'2"! I used to be 5'2" and refuse to believe that I have shrunk a 1/2 inch. I am only 36! Maybe when I get the weight down, I will perk back up a little (in height and other areas!). It does suck buying clothes and being short! It seems like pants have gotten longer and longer over the years. -
Shortie Porties--Banders that are short!

I'm 5'3.5" with short legs and long (relatively) torso. I have been overweight forever and don't have a clue what I will look like at goal, but I am anxious to see. My doc was telling me about a patient of his that lost over a 100lbs and gained a couple of inches in height. His weight was pulling him down, damn that gravity! Maybe I will be fortunate to gain some height rather than weight. -
Shortie Porties--Banders that are short!
shortgal replied to PigsRFlying's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I'm 5 feet even. I have short legs and for my height kind of long waisted, so I do have some midriff area and my port incision is slightly right of my center midriff ( below the bra band and above the waist of pants) and the port right now ( they can move a little as we lose weight) is closer to the right end of the incision. The port incision is the longest one I have and is about two inches long. (the others are very small 1/4 to 1/2 inch maybe and those are fading the fastest. If you're worried, just ask the surgeon when you have your consult, you cannot be the only short, short waisted person that has had surgery. Remember they are trained surgeons and have performed appendectomys etc. on various size people. Welocm to the forum. -
Shortie Porties--Banders that are short!

Hi, I'm 5'1 and finishing up my testing. I was shocked to find out what a healthy weight BMI is for my height. I would have thought that to be anorexic. Great thread, hope it keeps going -
Shortie Porties--Banders that are short!
shortgal replied to PigsRFlying's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
For years I have said "i'm not too fat for my height, I'm just too short for my weight". I'm 5 feet tall, used to be 5 feet and a 1/2 inch, but I guess I shrunk in the wrong direction! Clothes.... don;t even get me started. Why would a manufacturer think short people only need shorter pants? Don't they think we need shorter dresses, sweaters etc, too? If the average woman is 5 feet 4 and under and american women are heavier than ever, than doesn't it stand to reason that a good portion of the overweight women will be short? I have tried things on that make me look like a five year old playing dress up with mom's clothes. Shoulder area hanging loose, length that supposed to be knee length but on me hanging on the floor and the long sleeves that make me look like I am a wizard. The new 3/4 sleeves and capris and ankle length pants have made life somewhat easier, but until I can get into regular petite clothes shopping is tough. I have found that right now, Talbots Women's Petites size 16 fit me almost perfectly... of course they are expensive.. and when you lose a size in a month... that really gets expensive. And petite clothes mostly go up to a size 14 or 16 and they are cut smaller ( just check the size charts) so we really need to weigh much less than taller people to start getting into clothes that fit us. An average height person can shop in Misses, which will go up to 18 or 20. I don't count on ever being a "normal" weight. I figure I will always be in the overweight category. I'm 56 and let's face it, metabolism slows down as we age and the lowest weight I was as a young Adult was 128 pounds, and that is the upper limit of normal. But I would be delighted to get to and MAINTAIN 140 pounds. I could easily go into a store and find something to wear and look good. Overweight people know that thin people don't understand how hard it is to shop but overweight tall people have no idea how many fewer clothes choices overweight short people have. I'm probably about 10 to 12 pounds away from the regular petite department and I just got a fill I finally think will work!!!!! Life is good today! Funny thing is before I got banded, all my husband heard from me was "I have nothing to wear" and now thirty pounds later I am saying the same thing. I have outgrown all my clothes in the closet and buy the very minimum to get by. Nice to meet you all, fellow shorties! BTW, my husband is 6 feet 3 in tall! Isn't that a sight? LOL -
Shortie Porties--Banders that are short!

Well I was beat to the punch! I was going to come in and post something to share my signature with you lovelies When I saw this thread I read the name to my mom and she asked if she was a shorty porty. I exlplained the band has a port and that was the reference. She's overweight but losing, and not banded. It's funny how a lot of us aren't happy with what we've got, huh? For instance, I'd LOVE to be 5'9" but it's not gonna happen (probably? That patient gaining some height inches is inspiring!!) but at the same time, I'm thankful I'm 5'7", which I know a lot of people here and gonna be like "Oh shut up, you!!" about LOL For the poster who noticed things getting longer on her as she loses: I hope to have the same problem! I have faily long legs, but the pants I can find are short on me (I'm not much of a loser yet!) but instead of having a belly sticking out to make the fabric go out and then down... without it going out, the only place for it to go is down! Holy run-on sentence, bat man! Anyway, good on you all for working with what you've got, and I hope my signature picture can bring you a smile  -
I went to my first support group meeting today (I'm getting banded on the 27th) and it was great. This is a group that is just getting started and today was the first meeting so there were only 6 people there, but I feel more comfortable with a small group anyway. We are hoping the group will grow. Anyway, it was so encouraging. Three of the people there looked great - thin! Two others were still losing. There was a time when I was considering rny, had the surgery scheduled in fact. I went to an rny support group meeting and it scared the heck out of me. The lady next to me was 11 months post-op and said she was only beginning to feel OK. Many of the people looked unhealthy, with poor color and sagging skin. And nobody seemed too happy. It was a major factor in my deciding against rny. So I'm so glad my bandster support group was nothing like that! I think it will be a big help in my weight loss journey! Nancy

Do the band dance. That must be some really good news to be getting. How do you even think of anything to compare to that news? I love how easy it is to bend over now. I think about adding weights to my person at the gym that totals 90 lbs and how in the world would I carry it and how did I carry it? Welcome to your band adventure. your sooner to be band sister, edie

Hi Katie I am also a smoker, banded in Belgium by Dr Mignon who knew I smoked and it didnt bother him. I refuse to give up until I have lost all the weight I need to! I do plan to quit but I know I will crave all the things that go down easily if I cant have a cigarette, so for me it wouldnt make sense to quit now. take care, Donna x.

I thought the same thing that I'd never reach my goal of 214 lbs unless the last 25 lbs or so would come from PS. I attended a PS seminar last week and the surgeon said that we shouldn't be looking to PS to lose any weight, it's to contour our bodies after weight loss. After hearing this, I felt a bit down for 3 days then decided that I'd get motivated again and do everything I possible could to keep losing to get closer to my goal of 214 lbs lost. I have a pannus that is sagging really bad and he said that most sagging tummies way between 3 and 6 lbs at the most so it's not a huge weight loss after PS. I know a woman that lost 300 lbs without PS and then she had her PS to just tighten everything up. Invest in some good clothing that helps to suck you in so you don't feel so flabby and just keep moving forward. Look at how far you have already come.

ADVICE ON DIETING BEFORE SURGERY
johnlatte replied to amys's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The more weight you loose, and the better your physical condition, the better your recovery will be. I basically acted like I was sleeved a good month before surgery. My Dr. never made me do a liquid diet. I wasn't so worried about losing a lot of weight, BUT I did everything I could to improve my physical condition. Cut down the carbs detoxed as many impurities (white sugars, processed foods etc.) that I could, then hit the gym to get the overall conditioning done. I was sleeved on a Tuesday and was back in the gym on the following Monday and haven't looked back. Never have had any nausea or problems with the sleeve what so ever. Down 26lbs since the surgery on 11/20. The best thing you can do is start now, with a good plan and stick to it. You'll do much better post op if you do. -
ADVICE ON DIETING BEFORE SURGERY
JerseyGirl68 replied to amys's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree, I lost a big chuck before my actual surgery. I felt if I was making this big a change, I better get on board fast. So in June, 2012 when I made the decision to move forward I started weight watchers, then modified it to be high Protein, low carb/low fat. And set out to find a Protein Drink I loved. I've had no problems at all since surgery (other than a day or so of gas) and I think I really got a handle on emotional eating and head hunger. I just make sure I have items handy that I can have and enjoy. -
Just had my third fill and I finally am feeling some restriction with 5 cc's in a 10 cc band. But what I'm wondering is what's an average weightloss per month for someone at a good level of restriction? Also is it better to"go for it" and get filled as quickly & as often as you can? or is it better to ride it out slowly & carefully, even if the weightloss is slower?? Hope this posts make's sense!!:tongue_smilie:I'm trying decide if I want more of a fill next time or if I should ride it out??

If you don't have too many replies yet on your offer to be a bandster buddy, I would love your help. I was banded on April 3rd and have lost 62lbs thus far. I sure would love to have some insight on A) how to keep losing (I've had a bad plateau recently) How do you keep the weight off and "normailze" when your goal is reached?

I expect to be cleared by my doctor as far as my sleep apnea goes in the next 3 weeks. Then my doctors send in my insurance request for WLS at that point. I hope to be approved by early May. My issue is that I am going out of the country to visit my daughter and her new husband on May 7th. I was asked to drop 10 pounds before the surgery date and actually lost 13 pounds. I am at the end of this journey to get cleared but I find it hard to focus on maintaining my weight loss. While I expect my trip t Vienna to be my last fling, I'm finding it hard to stay motivated now. I am not sure if its the time involved, or that I have not been in touch with my doctor since December. Everday is a battle and I have gained 3 pounds. That still puts me at where I should be, but I have at least 3 months to go. How do I stay focused on maintaining my weight and not go back to my bad habits. I find it a real issue and I don't know how to stay on the right track. Any help from my friends out there would e appreciated.

First Post Not yet banded
Maddysgram replied to Creekwood's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Nice to have you here. I think most of us can say the same as you, we've all lost weight many times and either gained it back or quit before reaching goal. That is the reason I chose LBS, can't do yoyo dieting no more. You are very wise to take your time and learn all there is to know about the LB. You can learn something from both the one's doing it right and even from the mistakes others make. I hung around here for 8mths before being banded and learned more here then at all the meetings I had to have to qualify. By the sound of it, you will do very well. Wishing you all the best on your journey!
