  1. My husband and I both had our surgeries on Dec 8 2011 with Dr. Ramos-Kelly at the Hospital MI in Tijuana. We went together, with no one else. We called it a "date-surgery" and had a great time over the course of 5 days. No issues, we thought the hospital was just fine (though small), the staff were great and Dr. Kelly was the best. No complications, we were well taken care of medically, and had no problems in the hotel (Pueblo Amigo). We also went shopping on our own on our last day there. We have talked about this issue many times over the past 7 weeks and feel that having the surgery done at the same time was the best decision for us. Your body, diet and mind are going to go through great changes and it is great to have someone who can relate directly. We understand exactly how each other feels, and the changes have already greatly impacted our entire family (3 kids, ages 10, 12, 15) in several positive ways. Hubby has lost around 65 pounds, and I have lost 43. I cannot speak for the safety of the Monterrey area, but hope you will have your inlaws brings lots of things to do during your stay. Pre-surgery, we were both kept very busy with pre-op tests, labs, MD visits, etc. Post-op, it was meds, sleep, pee, walk for 2 days. Hope the inlaws won't be expecting good company from you and your wife because you will be busy recuperating. Maybe you could research some touristy things for them to do during your post op period. Personally, it would have driven me crazy to have someone there 'watching me sleep'. Unfortunately, no long term advise, but so far so good. I really feel like the lady from Seattle posted the totally negative post did Dr. Garcia/Hospital Mi no favors. I can't believe that her and I went to the same facility...maybe her expectations were too high? Not sure where she has received care anywhere in the US, but our medical care in TJ was far superior to any I have had here in the US...guess she was having a bad day? Good luck on your journey.

    Surgery Monday- I'm going nuts!!

My surgery is in a week, I've been buying little by little each time I go to the store, but I know I'll be in the same situation as you this time next week!

    Running/exercise again?

My doctor released me to swim at 3 weeks - once the incisions had healed. It was at 6 weeks that I was cleared for all other activities including running. Although I didn't really feel like doing much until 3 months post op due to the low energy / low calories. I had enough energy to get through the work day but nothing else. At 9 months back to my triathlon training - stronger than ever.

    I'm Out

I just want to say that we all experience doubts in the final days leading up to surgery. I had a great experience, haven't had any issues and lost 20lbs in the first 9 days. I know 2 people that are 5 years out and healthier than they ever could have been. The risks of having this surgery are way less than the risks of staying obese. Also this is pretty much the same surgery that people with stomach ulcers and stomach cancer have and they have lived long healthy lives. I had a client tell me about her mother who had 80% of her stomach removed because she had ulcers. She lived a long healthy life and just passed away at the age of 91. Your experience also has a lot to do with your surgeon. How he preforms the surgery, how he leaves you stomach and what shape he leaves your stomach. I would take some time and really think hard. Maybe in 2 weeks you won't be ready, but by 6 months you may. Good luck

    Whats wrong with me ?

I'm in the same place! Twenty gone immediately post op (March 20th), then nothing. Have lost 10 inches, nothing to sneeze at though. BUT I cut out the protein shakes yesterday - dropped a pound today. The first pound in 4 weeks. I have read confliciting reports about OVER-doing protien - your body uses that, not fat stores for energy and to meet BMR. I also gave myself permission to eat like a real person. Healthy protein and veggies, good fats. So, we'll see. I have been feeling like a failure too. Hope that this direction is the right course and good luck!!
  6. Hi Everyone.... I'm still learning this site and reading so much about everyone's success which is a HUGE motivator for me. I'm scheduled for Gastric Sleeve surgery on 11/8 and couldn't be more excited. i'm currently on my pre-op diet and I have to admit that it hasn't it been too bad. My doctor doesn't require a total liquid, only two Protein shakes a day plus high protein dinner which usually includes 4 oz. chicken/fish/turkey with a vegetable. I drink tons of Water and sugar free Jello (if need be) should I get hungry throughout the day. My doctor also allows me to have broth. With Halloween being yesterday, I did struggle with the candy bowl sitting there, so I gave in and had two small pieces of chocolate. After that I bagged up the remainder of the candy so my husband could take it to work with him so it is no longer in the house. Like they say, if it isn't in the house or you don't buy it, it won't be there to eat. I know after next week, we won't have these issues as we have completely cleaned out our fridge and pantry. Healthy lifestyle here I come. I'm looking forward to meeting people here and making true connections with others that have had or are going to have the same procedure I am and will be able to offer their advice Have a wonderful night everyone

    Three Weeks Post Op Stall

Totally normal. I stalled for a week I'm 4 weeks. I think it had to do with eating more solid foods Mich W Hw 223, SW 217 CW 199 GW 135
  8. I was like you in the beginning. I thought I'd be losing 10-15 lbs a month. Then I did the math. First, if you have a lot of weight to lose, you can lose 50. 60, even 70 lbs the first 3 months if you follow the rules. Most of us only lose 10-25 lbs the first few months. And the weight we lose in the first month is mostly Water. Here's the math: One pound equals 3500 calories burned! Our bodies need about 2000 calories a day to maintain the weight we now enjoy. If you can pump up your exercise routine, that figure could go up 200-600 more calories per day. If you consume 1500 calories a day and burn 2000 you will burn 500 more than you consumed. 500 X a 7 day week= 3500 calories burned or you just lost 1 lb. Burn an extra 500 calories per day through exercise and there's another 1 lb. It's not an exact science and so many things can affect your weight such as sodium intake, medications, menstrual cycles, high carb intake and so on. These can cause you to retain water and it's not hard to retain 2-4 lbs of extra water. So, it's easy to plateau(I do have a great plateau buster program). Here's a great link to a calorie calculator which will tell you how many calories you need per day to lose weight. http://nutrition.about.com/od/changeyourdiet/a/calguide.htm tmf

    Teeth Problem?

Hi Guys, I have a question about teeth problems after lap band. I was banned on 4/21/09 and have lost about 84 lbs. I have been going for dental cleaning every 6 months since I can remember and I have never had any problems. Well, yesterday I went to have my teeth clean (it has been 8 months because my kids were sick a lot so I have to postpone it) and they do X ray on my teeth and found out I have many teeth decay. I will need to have 5 crowns within this year and 2 filings. The dentist asked me a bunch of questions because he was concern about me. I’ve told him the only thing major happen to me is that I had lap band done. He told me to get my blood check and see if I get enough nutrition. He asked if I take my Vitamins and well, I hit or miss the vitamins, so he thought it might be that. I am going to get my blood check sometimes next week. If you have problems or know anyone that has problem, please advice me on what to do. Thank you very much,

    Just banded

I understand how you feel, I was banded 2 weeks ago and have felt better each day. My blood pressure has remained low since my surgery "YEA" and my energy level is getting better with every walk I take !!

    Finally Hopeful!

I did not tell many people that I was having surgery (mainly my family) because I knew I would not have their true support. I am single so no support from a husband. I lived on this forum board and it was a life saver to me during that three month insurance approval process. No matter what my fear, anxiety, joy or any other emotion was, I could come to this board and rest assured that someone else could relate. Do your research, start setting your mind to make the lifestyle changes and the time will soon fly by!
  12. One of the things that I have learned from my orthopedic adventures is that the connective tissues to our muscles, which includes the fascia part of the abdominal wall that helps to hold our guts in, have relatively little blood flow, which means that they heal a lot slower than the associated musculature. So you may feel healed and strong enough to lift more, your connective tissues may disagree. Incisional hernias are fairly common after abdominal surgery such as ours, and can sometimes be triggered by something as innocuous as a sharp sneeze or cough. I resumed some lifting fairly early, but kept the weights low, on the order of half or less than what I had been doing, and used the machines to specifically avoid compound lifts and to isolate the core so that it could heal. It was more of a range of motion and stretching exercise than muscle building at that time. My doc is more conservative than most in this regard and recommended avoiding things like crunches and sit ups for 12 weeks, and arguably that is not conservative enough (the plastics guy detected an umbilical hernia when I went for a consult, which was not notable to me, but was to him). OTOH, an incisional hernia can be a ticket to a subsidized tummy tuck if you need it!

    I pigged out!

I kinda did the same thing. Two weeks pre op my surgeon's nurse told me I had better not gain any weight prior to surgery. I believe that she was warning me that he would nor proceed the day of surgery if I had gained. So I had lots of food funerals but with a strong dose of fear. I had ice cream, sushi, Indian, steak, candy, cake, doughnuts, fried foods, ...even things that I would never normally want to eat. But I tried to keep the portions much smaller than usual, I was exercising a lot and I would cut back on the other meals of the day. I lost 4 lbs even during that crazy time.

    I pigged out!

One month before my preop diet I went on a 7 day cruise...I remember my boyfriend and I eating so much that by dinner time he was too full to eat. He said he was skipping dinner and I freaked out! I haddd to have dinner!!!! (even though I wasnt even hungry) we faught and I ended up going to the buffet by myself lol...then ofcourse we ate pizza and Cookies later that night, I was just addicted to food...luckily for me I went to the gym on the cruise and tried to eat in small portions at times(therefore I had only gained 4 pounds) when I came back home from the cruise, I needed more food funerals...I ate big macs for no reason, pizza, french fries, oreos....I remember eating the whole carton of chineese food all by myself, and I mean all of it! I literally forced myself to consume it all. I had a bad stomache ache and just remember feeling really depressed as hell. Damn I remember that day like it was yesterday....Anyways long story short I started my liquid diet 1 week early because of my food funeral lol I didnt want my doctor to notice that I gained weight! So I did 3 weeks of liquids...I lost the 4 pounds and some more (prob like 16 pounds or so) Now I am almost 7 months post op! Since the cruise until today, I have lost 80 pounds! I do not think of food, I do not care for food the way I use to...I dont really like eating all that much...I just wanna see my body get sexier...It takes time but within a few months ur mind changes along with ur new body...U have the mentality of a healthy person. All you wanna do is excersize, feel fit and light....You will be amazed TRUST ME
  15. I was lucky and didn't have any pain associated with gas, however my tummy still rumbles to this day (does not keep me up at night though) and I also walk a lot to help keep things moving. And I was also very tired for the first week, better the second week, but still quite tired and by week 3 and 4 I was back to normal Good luck to you.

    finally

Seems like after I got a date for surgery October 3, 2007 everything is going pretty quickly. I have put myself on mostly liquid diets off and on for the last 3 weeks just to see if it was tolerable or not. It hasn't been too bad. Sept is the month for nearly every birthday and even my anniversary so I did allow myself to enjoy a few days of celebration. But now I have to do the clear liquids per the doctors demands for the week prior to surgery and also no motrin or excedrin or any pain releivers except tylenol. It has been rough. My headache only dulls with tylenol and I never thought I could be soooooo hungry. However I can do all things through Christ who stregthens me. The protein shakes that I was doing aren't listed on the dr list of drinks only glucerna or slimfast so they dont seem to be as filling. I will however survive. Just be glad to have it done.
  17. your surgeon or discharge nurse should have gone through how you would feel the next 2 weeks. that is a normal feeling only because we are still swollen down there and its a healing process. i am going through the same thing so i wouldnt worry. i notice that the warm liquids and room temperature are going down much smoother for me. are you really concerned? if so i would call your surgeons office there is always a nurse on call to help. good luck to you! i was sleeved on the 6th
  18. Hi friends! Yesterday was my 4 week post-op. Things are going well. I have been able to tolerate soft foods and am beginning to add "regular" goods a little at a time. The only issue I have is the one that most of you have talked about.......constipation. It is a struggle to get in the 80 grams of Protein and 64 ounces of Fluid, but I will continue to strive to make it!

Oldie but feels like a newbie...

Hi I too have been gone... I missed all of you. You know how if something will happen it will. I have had a really great time with my band.... I love it....It really works. I saw the doc yesterday and he said see you in three months... I wanted to hear that so much. I think this will really be a good thing. The really hard part was others. Have you noticed how people change. Oh well. Life is good. Good luck with your port. Bummer.
  21. If it feels anything like when you wake up in the morning and you were starving... But the first thing you do is get a cold drink, and it cramps your stomach.. That's normal. Mine did that for a couple of weeks. I think it's like the internal feeling of getting salt on a paper cut.. lol. It's almost like your stomach seizes up.

    8 days to go!!!

I'll be having surgery in 8 days!!! I'm 6 days into my pre-op diet and I've lost 10 pounds. I feel really good about that, because I've been sticking to the diet really well. Four protein shakes during the day and one healthy choice dinner. Add veggie or healthy choice dessert if I'm still hungry but no more than 1100-1200 calories per day. Some of the 10 pounds is probably water weight and I'm counting from weight that I just gained from having "last meals". The first two days are pure hell, but after that, I have gotten used to drinking my meals instead of eating them. I really haven't been hungry much at all. My boss took me to lunch on Friday, and he knows I'm having surgery, but I didn't tell him what for. I ate 1/3 of a grilled chicken sandwich really slowly and he didn't seem to notice. Then, I just drank a protein drink for dinner. I've been meaning to get to the gym but it is COLD. I mean really COLD for Florida. It's been in freezing temperatures the past few days. When I get off work it's dark and cold and I just want to stay inside and be warm and not go back out. I will definitely start going to the gym after my surgery. I think I can do cardio fairly soon after and weights after 6 weeks or so. I'm really looking forward to losing this weight and starting the new year off right!! I've only told two people at work that I'm doing it and only a few friends and my family. I actually am going to have a month off work counting the Christmas vacation I already scheduled, so I hope to come back to work much lighter. Let the rumors begin!!!
  24. Yay Steve - That’s so wonderful - so glad for you. Yes it is an emotional roller coaster. Food just like any other drug can control our lives and we just have to move on from those things that are hurting us. Just keep doing what your doing - looking at the (non food) positives like the being able to move better, less pain, less medications, etc. Look at us. We are Irish and I have to give up bread and potatoes. OMG.... - but I know it will be so worth it. Gosh I can't wait to fit in the tub again. LOL I too am excited about the idea of being able to move better. Just to do my own toes, work in my own garden without spending the whole next couple day recuperating from it. It will be so worth it, you will see. Find new interests – bowling, hiking, hunting – things that don’t relate to food. Like I love painting, crochet, and gardening. I’m putting a lot of focus into these things and not so much on the culinary stuff. All it has done is make me miserable like I’m sure it has you. I too was a bit ashamed to tell people. Like I failed or something.. taking the easy way out. I’ve gotten so over that. I’ve tried for 20 years to deal with my weight with many programs, diets, exercise routines and stuff. I have to say I really did try. So the heck with what others say. You’re doing this for YOU and your family. Losing the weight to be healthy and prolong life to be with your family What ever the reason. What people say doesn’t matter. I haven’t announced like all out, but most people I know, know. I don’t miss work and it was really hard to explain the taking 2 week off so most my coworker know too. But no one has been negative at all. Actually way opposite. Please do keep us updated on your progress. My surgery date is July 12th so same as you sooo nervous but ready to get on with this new chapter in my life. Praying for you and a more healthier and active future. GrInS

Fisrt fill tomorrow - big question...

I was never told what to eat or not eat before a fill. I don't think it matters one way or another. My doctor makes us go on clear liquids for three days after a fill, so when I go in I make sure I have an adequate meal because I'm not going to eat again for a long time! If you want to make sure, call the office and clarify.
