  1. I had revision from sleeve to bypass. I also had lap band to sleeve before that. I had so many issues with the sleeve it wasn’t even funny. My stomach kept kinking and I vomited everything up. I tried a gastric stent and that did not work. Although the revision to bypass has been drastic (I was already down to 170lbs, I’m male) I had complications due to scar tissue from previous WLS that was preventing me from drinking and had to have a subsequent surgery to remove the scar tissue and a huge hematoma at one of my incisions. I lost over 20lbs while in the hospital (almost 3 weeks). They waited too long to put me on TPN. However, since then, aside from being fatigued and tired things have been going relatively well. My main concern is trying to eat enough calories in stage 3 that I at least maintain my weight. I really can’t afford to lose another pound. Does anyone out there have anything similar and have suggestions on higher calorie food to eat in this stage. I have 3 more weeks before I can then begin trialing “normal” food. I know I got sidetracked a bit, but for what it’s worth, even though this has been a life changing surgery, at least I can eat now whereas I could not before so I don’t regret it.

    Finding Revision Experts

I didn't even bother asking the staff. I requested a consult with the surgeon then I asked all the tough questions. My surgeon had not performed a lot of band to vsg, but had quite a few band to RNY and flat out band removals so I was confident in his skills. I really went with personal testimony, and then called different offices in several different states and contacted a couple of surgeons in Mexico in the event of insurance had not come through for me. I contacted surgeons specifically in Dallas, TX because I have family in the area. There aren't any great revision surgeons in Florida, so I knew I would have to go where I felt I would be best taken care of. I would share those same concerns, and I hope they get back with you. I would say a 5-7 business day turn around on emails is more than realistic, and if you don't get answers then move onto another surgeon/office.. COE means diddly squat most cases. My band surgeon had COE yet violated every HIPPA law with my med records, got his partnership stripped and title of "director of bariatrics" with the hospital stripped from him shortly after I left his practice and filed complaints about his practices.

  8. I am scheduled for a revision from band to sleeve on May 10 (yes, two weeks away) and after reading people's posts on both sleeve and bypass I'm starting to wonder if I should revise to bypass instead. I was originally banded in 2008 at a starting weight of 260. Lost about 60 lbs but have gained 30 back. Band has slipped from puking, I have slight reflux (kept in check by a ppi), PCOS, and pre-diabetes. I need to lose right at 100 lbs to be at my "desired" weight although I'd be happy losing 50-75. So I know for the amount of weight I want to lose the sleeve makes sense. I'm just nervous about failing yet again. I know it wasn't all the band's fault - I didn't follow the rules 100% of the time. I am tired of sliming and puking and fighting to get to the green zone - I've finally given up on the band working so I am moving on - but I need to know to what?!?! Any suggestions?? Thanks in advance!

    Finding Revision Experts

I understand the COE isn't really that big of a deal, I had just hoped they would be able to release those numbers to me. There are 2 other Bariatric surgeons in the KC area, but one of them does NON-STOP commercials and that is a huge turnoff to me. The other one has not done very many sleeves and although the lady I talked to at that office was very forthcoming in sharing specifics on the surgeon's experience, she said she wasn't sure he had done very many revisions, much less a VBG to a Sleeve. So, he is out... Guess I will start a new thread asking for anyone who knows a Revision Experts in the KC or surrounding area and see what comes back. I need to stay in-network though too. Thanks for the feedback.
  10. I see various threads a times where people give the advice to "find a surgeon who is an expert with revisions". So, there is a surgeon in my area that I have found many speak very highly of, however, I can't get his office to give me any specifics on the number of each of the procedures he has done, including revisions and what type of revisions he has done. I sent another email Friday asking what the status was of getting me this information. In the meantime, I have contacted Medical Records for the hospital he works for (considered a COE), they said it was confidential information. I also called the COE affiliation and they said that the only thing they could tell me was that in terms of procedures that one of the minimum requirements was that they perform at least 50 WL surgeries per year and that they do on-site inspections every 3 years....but that was about it. Same basic story with the state medical board..... Soooo.... as I continue my Quest for a revision I am now at a point where I need to find a surgeon who is an expert with revisions. I feel its a red flag if I can't get a straight answer from this surgeon's office even if there are others who speak highly of him. It makes me concerned that they either A) they are simply too busy to be bothered with such questions Maybe also understaffed in the office or C) maybe they don't really want to release that information - for WHATEVER reason. Either way, I need to feel that my surgeon and his office are forthwith and responsive to questions. It's been a week this Monday since I asked this question from his office and NOTHING, not even a follow up. Ok, so back to my original question- how does one find an expert / competent surgeon, and in my case a revision WLS surgeon?!?!?!????? Thanks for any/ all suggestions.
  11. Hi Alexa! First off, you will love Dr. Aceves, he is wonderful. As for how I am doing, well, thus far I am very, very pleased with my revision. I lost 31 pounds in the first month. Then I plateaued for several weeks. I found that to be very frustrating, but since reading many others stories, I am finding that this is actually quite normal. At nearly four months out, I have lost 52 pounds. I am thrilled with that, and am averaging about 1-2 pounds a week right now. I have been bad about the gym the past few weeks between moving and this being my busy time at work. But, I am going to get back with the program, and when I do I am sure my weekly weight loss average will increase a bit.

    SIPS surgery

I’m doing well, I feel I’m a bit on the slow loser side but at least it’s coming off. And I guess to be expected since I am a revision. Best thing I can tell you is to walk as soon as you can. And as much as you can. Don’t worry about anything in the beginning except walking and water. They gave me these little one ounce cups and I would line up 5 at a time. With each lap of the living room I’d take a shot. And repeat. It was the only way I could get liquids in. Good luck! Let us know how it goes and walk walk walk!
  13. I got my first band in march of 2006 and i think but am not sure that it started slipping in december of 2006. Final blockage in november 2007. I had an immediate revision. I did not do like many people and have it taken out and reinstalled later. They just put in in higher

I'm Revising from Band to a Sleeve

Thank you for all the well wishes. I am anxious to get this done. I have been totally unfilled for almost 3 weeks now. I have been able to eat just about anything for the past 2 weeks. I haven't gained but a pound or so. I'm happy for that. We will be leaving for Mexicali tomorrow. We plan on meeting a driver on the US side of the border at 1:00, Saturday afternoon. They are letting me have all of the tests done on Saturday. That way, we have all day Sunday to do some sightseeing. That should be fun. I have surgery on Monday, and should be out on Thursday morning. I am a little concerned about the long drive home (Seattle area). We plan on going slow and stopping every hour or two. Denise, the revision from lapband to sleeve is costing me $12,500. My insurance won't cover it. Since I've already had the TT done, this should be it for me. Cheryl

Wife doesn't want me to get surgery

My husband at first would not let be get RNy, so 6 years ago I had lap band , now just had bypass in Jan as a revision had reflux so bad the last few years felt like a bulimic....my husband was ok with bypass this time,
  16. I have been lurking for awhile, reading posts and doing research. I am about one month out from my surgery date (July 2nd). My surgeon (Dr. Maher in Richmond, VA) originally recommended laparoscopic gastric bypass during my initial consultation. He suggested this for two separate reasons: 1) the amount of weight I need to lose (130 pounds) and 2) the adjustments needed for the lap band. While he is willing to do either surgery he felt that in the long run gastric bypass would be more successful. When I met with him I was dead set on lap band. However, reading about the complications, adjustments, etc. I am beginning to waver. I feel that the surgery for the lap band is safer and less complicated...but I trust my surgeon 100%. He has been performing the gastric bypass and lap band for a long time and has had zero mortalities for either surgery. I am beginning to wonder if he is correct...maybe the gastric bypass would be a better option. I am not looking for a quick fix..rather I am looking for one and ONLY one surgery that will provide a tool to maintain weight loss. My fear is that I will not be successful with the lap band and will opt for a revision to gastric bypass. Any advice, suggestions, etc. would be greatly appreciated. I just want to make sure I make the best decision for me! Jennifer:mellow:

    Mexico Revision?

I've had the band since 2010, going to Mexico tomorrow for revision. dr. Ponce de leon and Trish as coordinator. I'll keep you posted.
  18. Hi! I am a Jersey Girl too!!! I had the lap band done in June of 2012. My starting weight was 317lbs. I lost 100lbs in 8 1/2 months. I became very sick and had to have the band revised in March of 2013. My weight the day of revision was 216. Since the revision band was larger than the original mr Dr could never get it to work again. I am currently 265 lbs and am having the sleeve done on April 30th. I LOVE reading your journey and wish you all the best.
  19. Hi All! I’m scheduled for a VSG to Loop DS revision next Thursday 9/26/19 with Dr. Walter Medlin In UT. I had VSG in SD with Dr. Takata In 2013, insurance covered it. It was successful and without complications. Pre VSG I was 297+... at my lowest I was at 180, With time and two pregnancies I lost restriction and gained. I was able to lose weight after both pregnancies but was not able to maintain it, or return to the post VSG pre pregnancy low. Despite maintaining a medium level of activity (depending on the week spin class/ triathlons/ 5ks/ 18-30 mi relaxed bike rides on the weekends/ lots of walking), I hovered around 235, now with low activity I’m at 250. I’m in my 2 week preop diet for the revision which is just as tough as I remember it the first time, maybe more. Little nervous for this surgery-more than I remember being for the VSG. This time I’m going in self pay. Confident in my decision but nervous about the immediate aftermath, toilette issues/ rate of loss/ nutrient deficiencies- the usual. Dr doesn’t plan to touch the sleeve, unless any problems are seen in the EDG. I’m loading up on vitamins and supplements now To get ahead of any deficiencies caused by malabsorption in the long run. Dr will determine Common Channel length at time of surgery at the moment it looks like it will be ~300 cm. Has anyone else had Dr. Medlin for their revision? Any tips for immediately after surgery? I’ll be flying back to SD the following Saturday-Anyone have to fly 2 days after surgery? Tips on flying post op, any general post op tips for this specific Bariatric surgery would be appreciated. I plan on updating this thread as I go along, and hope others might find it helpful in their research too. Thanks!
  20. I agree with TKW, you are probably a mite to tight. How long have you been having this problem? If you already had a revision, I would not want to have another because you are too tight! Call your surgeon's office. Karen
  21. I am 7 months out and down 60 lbs I had to have a port revision 3 months in and now Bk up to 7cc I can eat stuff as long as small bites chew chew chew and very slow! band to sleeve (bcbs horizon?)

I had band to sleeve revision on 10/26/16. I could not be happier with my decision! It is true that because of the restriction of the band, you may not lose as fast. But you will definitely be able to tell the difference. Just remember, everyone's journey is different and what happens for them may not be the same for you. Follow the rules, eat right, exercise, keep your head up and keep your eyes on the prize. Best of luck

    A Dr C question

Dr C. Not sure if you can answer my question or not. But you seem to be very helpful to others so I'll try. I had my band placed 4/26/05. I have had many fills approximately have had 14.5cc placed in my VG band. I have never been restricted. I can eat anything I want. I had ugi this week and it looks as though my band has slipped. I don't know that I have ever had any symptoms of a problem. I know I have a pretty high tolerance to pain maybe I have ignored problems. I was getting frustrated because I have really been working on it. Exercising and eating good. Not to say that I have never made a bad food choice. Did I miss something I should have noticed. Will it hurt me if my insurance will not cover for a revision to just leave the band wherever it is? I am just confused and frustrated. I would appreciate any info you can give me.
  25. I really need some help and advice on what I can do. I have lumbar stenosis and have to get injections to be able to walk like normal people, otherwise I get stuck and cant move my left leg and have awful pain trying to do so. I also have bad neck that gives me horrible headaches which go on day and night sometimes and need injections for those. I truly cant handle all of this pain. I am so overwhelmed at the moment. I was told today by the bariatric team that if I must have them to space them out and stay on my Dexilant ( I dont know if I will ever be able to get off of it) Now I am scared. She didnt tell me what can happen by doing these injections. Any advice would be greatly appreciated . FYI I was revised to Bypass 2 months ago and had been able to have the injections with the sleeve with no issues.
