I feel like I have no familial support for my surgery.
Guest replied to itami o's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi man - So here's the science: at your weight, you won't ever get to a 'healthy' weight by diet and exercise. Your parents may not know this. They're from a generation where being gay was a mental disorder, schizophrenics were put in confinement, and doctors happily prescribed amphetamines for women going on vacation so they could work even harder with kids AND a husband to care for 24/7. This doesn't excuse their abusive behavior. But you can only control how you react, you can't control their abuse. If they say they'll go to a psychiatric ward because their son is having needed metabolic surgery, repeat the sentence to them and ... OK so what you're saying is that if I have needed surgery, you will go to a psychiatric ward? Well, that does actually sound like a good idea. I'll come visit, I promise. Or throw it back. If they say you have no discipline, remind them they're the ones who claim they'll have a mental breakdown over their child having needed surgery. Is that discipline? Sounds weak to me. ... what I'm saying is: live your life. It's your life. F*ck them. -
6 Almost 6 months out and have lost
♡MyCurves replied to Ready21's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm 11 weeks post op. Have lost 37 lbs after VSG, but lost weight prior to surgery, so I'm down a total of 65lbs rn. I aim for at least 800cal a day...to 1000cal. Also try to get in at least 80-100g of protein daily as well. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app -
I kinda felt the same when I had my VSG in October 2021. I had lost like 16 lbs and stayed that way for a while, eventhough I felt I was eating appropriately. Keep in mind that this a tool, so u still have to work hard to lose the weight. I've felt I've had to work extra hard, more than others. But u gotta keep going. I would say log everything u eat ans measure everything. It's possible you're not eating enough or eating too much. I found was eating only like 400-500cal. A day. U would think I'd be dropping weight like crazy but I wasn't. I pushed myself to eat at least 800-1000 calories daily and I've been losing weight a little more steadily. Also bring your concerns up to your nutritionist & surgeon. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

I feel like I have no familial support for my surgery.
itami o posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
So, I’m around 6' - 6'2" 289 lbs and am scheduled to get a sleeve gastrectomy next week and my parents are understandably upset at me going through with the surgery as I had an uncle pass away while getting a similar procedure. I initially didn’t want to tell them because I knew it would worry them, but now that I’ve told them, they’re worried so much more than I anticipated. They don’t think I need the surgery and despite my motivation to use this surgery as a tool to lose weight, my parents think this is an irrational decision. It's gotten to the point where they're constantly gaslighting me, asking if I'm mentally okay, if I need help, etc. I strongly believe in the need to go through with this surgery, but it’s difficult going through with it knowing my parents are holding their emotions as a hostage to deter me from going through with it. I believe it's emotionally manipulative (citing that my decision will push them over the edge, causing them to go into a psychiatric ward, or something worse). There are other things they've told me like I'm not disciplined enough, not working hard enough, taking the easy way out, etc. I'm emotionally exhausted and I’m not sure how to navigate this. I don’t know if they’ll ever come around to accept my decision. What would you guys do in this situation? Should I do a conference call with my surgeon? I’m hesitant to do that, though (one parent irrationally threatened that he would sue the surgeon for going through with it). I just don’t know what to do. I know this is the right decision for me, but I just can't seem to understand their point of view. Any help is appreciated. -

No Restriction - VSG to RNY
AB2B replied to 2badogs's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Interesting post. Happy you all shared. I have my revision from VSG to RNY bypass next week and I am so anxious to know how my body with adjust. I have terrible GERD now plus have gained and lost the same 30 pounds for 2 years. I had VSG in March 2017. -
I do get urgent bowel movements so that is what I was concerned about. Someone mentioned above about being able to drink more than a sip so that will be helpful. May I ask how long before these changes occur? Also, did any of you experience the hormone changes. I am all over the place. Last night I was in bed crying to my husband what did I do? I know logically I did the right thing cause I have almost gained all my weight back and if I just let the doctor take out the band I would gaine it all back pluse more. Thank you all for the information and advice.

1 month post-Op work out/Exercise?
catwoman7 replied to DaisyAndSunshine's topic in Fitness & Exercise
I went to water aerobics a lot that first year (I still do once or twice a week, but I went a lot more than that the first year. I have a bad hip so walking fast enough or far enough to get much benefit out of it is tough - and I was too heavy at the time to do much else). I think I "rode" the stationary bikes and seated ellipticals at the gym, too. Once I was about eight weeks out, I was cleared to do weights, so I added in the weight machines at the gym, too. -
Panniculectomy worth it?
Writergirl replied to Writergirl's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
You are so brave to have that whole body lift! You must be so happy with yourself! How in the world do you recover from that surgery with no position that isn’t painful? Honestly, my backside isn’t that bad. I would love to have it done right so I look good afterwards, but that’s not going to happen because a cosmetic surgeon won’t touch me. It is a constant source of misery for me that in spite of trying everything, I never got to a BMI below 40. I’ve kept off 130 pounds, but now I just gain and lose the same 10 pounds. -
Panniculectomy worth it?
Writergirl replied to Writergirl's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
It’s a long story. My PCP gave me a referral to a breast surgeon to have breast reduction. I mentioned to the breast surgeon that I’d always thought if I did it I’d have my belly done at the same time. She said that was no problem! She works with a surgeon who does that and they can do it all in one operation. I went to see that surgeon. He told me to see a cosmetic surgeon first. Cosmetic surgeon refused to do it because my BMI is too high for elective cosmetic surgery. (8 years later, I still weigh 240.) It can be done for medical purposes, but not by a cosmetic surgeon. They all recommended I get a gastric bypass and come back. So I’m rolling that around in my head, too, but that means probably two years before I could have plastics, and I’m already 65. I just don’t know what to do. And honestly, my metabolism has been so low since I was sleeved I feel I’ll have to starve for the rest of my life just to not gain. I was tested and only burn 900 calories a day. Sigh. I’m open to all thoughts. Thanks! -
For the Trackers: What's your diet been like the last 30 days?
GradyCat replied to ms.sss's topic in The Lounge
I don't have the premium version of My Fitness Pal so I can't see stuff like you can. Plus I just started Weight Watchers three weeks ago and it only tracks points. So this morning I was curious and I put my last several days of WW tracking into into My Fitness Pal and surprisingly my macros were really good. It's about 1100 calories/day. MFP showed that I'd get back into Onederland within the next couple of weeks, which is encouraging. I do enjoy tracking things. -
1 month post-Op work out/Exercise?
GradyCat replied to DaisyAndSunshine's topic in Fitness & Exercise
I can't remember back to one month post op as it's been 3 years, but I do remember going to the gym and walking and doing the bike and cardio stuff. I didn't do weights for a while due to weight lifting restrictions and didn't want to pull my incision or affect my new stomach in any way. Now I go to the gym 7 days a week and do both strength-training as well as cardio. On good weather days I walk outside. On bad weather days like yesterday I use YouTube videos and do indoor exercises, walk in place, cardio, etc. I don't have any home gym equipment, so I mainly do cardio and floor exercises. I'm thinking about buying some dumbbells. It sounds like you've got the perfect set-up at home to do plenty of fitness things on your program. Good luck! -
Either one is going to give you a better chance to meet your goal. I had no clue what I was having when they put me under; I just knew I needed help. We were shooting for bypass, but if my prior hernia repairs would complicate it, he'd do a sleeve. Woke up with a bypass. 🤷🏽♂️ And I had horrible heartburn before the surgery. None now, but even knowing that, we'd have done a sleeve, and just dealt with the heartburn if we had to. Dropping the weight, kicking diabetes, being more energetic, all carried more weight than gerd.

Am I really gonna lose weight?
Arabesque replied to Myrandalynn06's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I can only echo the words above. It is a tool. You have to learn how to best use it to get the most success for you. The tool does so much for a period of time (the hunger comes back, you physically can eat more, your restriction can reduce in intensity) but rest is up to you. You have to establish new habits, make better food choices, incorporate some activity into your routine. Go back to what you did before & you’ll put on weight again. It’s what I did after every diet I went on. This time has been the complete opposite. Don’t be afraid to seek the help of a good therapist. (Your surgeon should be able to recommend a good one.) They’ll help you work through your doubts & also any issues that may limit or block your success after surgery. The surgery doesn’t remove the behaviours, emotions, etc. that drive us to eat & gain the weight in the first place. They never really go. Plus life does tend to throw crap at us at times. Having strategies to manage the stress, depression, etc. will help you not turn to food for comfort. All the best. -
I did! And I just got my 10,000 steps in! Woot-Woot! And I used soup cans for weights. I crack myself up!

1 Year Post OP and I think I am alcoholic
ms.sss replied to Coexister's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
So the family has been bugging me about my alcohol consumption since Covid started. Full disclosure, prior to the new year, I was drinking as least 2 (sometimes 3, on rare occasions 4) drinks A DAY. Either an espresso martini or red wine. So to get them off my back, and prove to myself I could do it, I agreed to cut down to no more than one one a day for a month. I thought this would be a piece of cake, but lol and behold, I ended up non-compliant the first 2 days. Mostly because I “forget” that I am on a mission. So on day 3, I put a sticky note on the vodka bottle when I have a drink to remind me I already had a drink that day….and I tell Mr. so he can remind me at dinner if I absently reach for the wine. Since doing this the past 3 days, it’s been working. When I quit smoking (again) last year (I had quit for 10+ years, went on a vacay in 2019 where I accepted an offered cigarette, and just like that, I was smoking again). And my quitting attempts last spring was also thwarted by me “forgetting “ that I was trying to quit. So I tossed all my lighters, got rid of my outdoor ashtrays and told EVERYONE I was trying to quit, and asked to remind me if I forget , but not to enforce me (cuz I know that will just piss me off), as I want to make the decisions myself. I’ve mostly stopped since about April 2021, but I admit I’ve had maybe 10-15 in the past 9-ish months….which is a heck of a lot better than 10-15 A DAY. Final examples: I log everything I eat. Having a running total of my calories, has a bit of influence on my food choices at the end of the day. I weigh myself every day…so I am aware if my weight starts to move from its happy place. Just a couple other “reminders” for me to keep myself in check. This approach may not work for everyone, but I seem to have moderate success with it. Anyway…this was my long winded attempt to suggest you try to find what it is that works for you and what doesn’t (either on your own or with the help of a therapist), and make efforts to implement this knowledge to achieve your goal(s). You may not be perfect, and that’s ok, small changes for the better are better than non at all. Good Luck! ❤️ -
Hey There! Any December 2021 Surgery Friends?
Frazzled replied to armartin98's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hey all! Just joined today. I had my Gastric Sleeve done on 12/22. I hit my highest weight in July 2021 and lost a fair amount of weight through low-carb eating and not eating junk. In 16 days, have lost 24 pounds from my pre-surgery weight and am down a total of 50 pounds from that high point. I am feeling amazing and have had no issues with the full liquid / pureed food. I am now on soft food. Feeling great, no issues so far. -
Hiatal hernia after already having the sleeve?
Violette replied to SleevedK's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hello all, Has anyone here had a hiatal hernia repair after already having the sleeve? I was sleeved in 2014 and all was going well ( uneventful recovery, Good weight loss and maintenance) until I got pregnant with my second child last year. I started to have some bad acid reflux in my third trimester ( burning pain, shortness of breath) and found out during a barium swallow and endoscopy that I have a ‘small sliding hiatal hernia’ but have not been told how exactly how big/ small the defect is. I have dysphagia which is better some days but the most persistent symptom is shortness of breathe/ a ‘tickle’ in my chest that does not want to go away. I stopped my PPI a few weeks ago for the manometry test after weaning for a little while and the rebound hyperacidity has been awful ( thank heavens for gaviscon) In any case, i’m supposed to be meeting with my surgeon later this month to discuss results and like some of you, I would prefer not to convert to rny if I can have this addressed some other way. I would love to hear your stories! -
I'm losing more than weight. Ran labs to prep for my annual exam and since my pre-op labs in September (sleeved 10/13), I've lost:
-
39pts off my Total Cholesterol including...
- 29pts off LDL
- 33pts off Triglycerides
- 18pts off fasting glucose & almost normal range
- A1C is lower on low end of "pre-diabetic" range
My surgeon does labs at 6 months, so this is cool info to have in the meantime!

I would contact a bariatric therapist on your team or any therapist you can get your hands on. Everyone needs help these days so finding any therapist will be a bit of a challenge but worth the effort. It’s true that weight loss is 90% a mind game. When I get stuck, it’s a strength to ask for help. You’ve already shown strength by asking for help here. Keep us posted on your discoveries.-Meg

Need Help!! Feeling my weight loss has slowed down...stopped.
BayougirlMrsS replied to TheBusierBee's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
You definitely need to get with your NUT and SX. This is something they can help you gain control of. My first step would be to purge your home/car/office of ALL unhealthy food. Throw them out. You can't eat what you don't have/buy.... -
Are you still tracking what you're eating? Are your exercises making you gain muscle, which is a good thing, but weighs more, so maybe you'll see your progress in other ways like inch loss?
-
I've gone into this with the mindset that no food is off limits, and at least for me, that really worked (YMMV). I've had fries a ton of times ... like, 5 each time. That's it. I can really recommend working on re-gaining the feeling of what full is. So many of us have been training ourselves to ignore hunger/satiety signals for diet purposes that it's very difficult to truly feel it. You know that whole thing they say about turn off everything when you eat, do nothing but eat, sit for 15 minutes with your meal etc.? It seems like something we can't reasonably do, and I sure can't, but trying it out is a mind-blowing experience for some. Just sitting there with your food, trying to really feel what it does when your body starts telling you "hey, thanks for the food, I'm good now!" Can highly recommend just trying it out for the experience.

My surgeon told me that it's really a lot harder to stretch that stomach back out than people think it is. We all gained weight during COVID, do don't beat yourself up about it. Just get back to the basics of tracking your food, getting in your water, focusing on protein, exercising if you can, and the weight will come off. I've just lost 25 lbs since Labor Day and it's possible. You can do it . . . I believe in you! Remember why you had the WLS in the first place.

Need Help!! Feeling my weight loss has slowed down...stopped.
GradyCat replied to TheBusierBee's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
You've lost 70+ pounds in 4 months and you don't think that's fast enough? That's FANTASTIC!!!! You're doing fine. Your weight loss is going to slow as you get smaller and that's perfectly normal. 8 pounds is still good in a month. My (unsolicited) advice is: (1) be realistic. you're doing GREAT, quit beating yourself up. (2) talk to the counselors as your surgeon's office or a private therapist about your food issues with head hunger and eating issues. But be kind to yourself. You've GOT THIS!
