  1. I've started two things - one, I'm taste-testing samples from a number of the Protein powders and Meal Replacements out there. Second, since I'm doing that, I'm pseudo practicing for the pre-op diet. Hey, if I'm drinking the Protein drinks anyhow, I might as well make it useful! What does that mean, exactly? The diet is to use 3-4 Protein shakes during the day, plus one small meal for dinner. Total is not to exceed 870 calories, so while I can use skim milk to mix my drinks, it wouldn't leave a lot for dinner! I'll likely choose the protein powders I can tolerate well mixed with Water, and try to be satisfied with 3 of those during the day, so that I can have around 300-350 calories for dinner, since I'll be looking for dense protein to keep me satisfied overnight. I can, of course, have all the non-caloric liquids I would like during this diet. What I am doing (as of today) is replacing Breakfast and lunch with 2-3 protein shakes during the day. At dinner time, I am not eating with the restricted calories I will be during the diet, but I am trying to keep my portion size to something equivalent to what I will eat in the pre-op diet and focusing as much as possible on protein. I am trying to keep the total day between 1000 and 1200 calories, but I'm not being obsessive about it. The reality is that if I'm only getting 3-500 calories during the day, that leaves me 700-900 for dinner - that's a pretty big amount of room. I've told myself that if I am positively starving during the afternoon, I will allow myself one more Protein shake, but I'm trying to work with just 3 shakes and lots and lots of water or tea during the day. Other than including a Protein Drink for breakfast so that I *do* have breakfast, I am not focused on dieting on the weekends, just trying to be mindful of what I am eating and keep carbs and calories in check. What I'm expecting from this is three things. One, of course, is that I will spend the next few weeks trying out a lot of protein drinks and maybe some preparation methods. Two, I will get these reviews onto my blog (http://livebytes.net/blog/spacedust/ for anyone who's interested) to try and give others some ideas of nutritional values and what I thought of the stuff as I give it a try. Third, I suspect that it won't hurt in the usual battle to lose a few pounds, and certainly won't hurt for me to get used to what it's like from the perspective of if I get uncomfortably hungry or not. Wish me luck!
  2. My dr. was against salad until you are past the 6 week mark. I'm not sure that he is big on salad anyway (because it is not dense filling protein) but I just recently in the last 2 weeks have had 2 salads (I'm 10+ weeks out). I make sure to eat my Protein first, then I had a few bites of salad (and enjoyed them!) Anyway, that is my surgeon's notes.

    48 hours after my surgery

Keep walking! It will get better. I'm 1 week, 4 days out and I feel great! When I first rolled onto my side, holding tightly to a pillow seemed to help. Good luck.

Anybody else been having problems with LBT?

I haven't had any problems what so ever. It was kind of hard to load last week, but no problems since then!

    Saggy Skin?

I have very little to no saggy skin. I have lost 80+ pounds. I am almost 29. I have a few dimples on my stomach-- no "loose skin" and the dimples are improving and it is getting better every week. There is hope!

    Pain/sore port area-please help!

You were told not to exercise for six weeks? Wow. I was told to get up and moving as soon as possible. I asked how soon I could use treadmill etc. they said as soon as I felt comfortable. It is not vigorous, just moderate activity. However, I was told NO abdominal specific exercises until 6 weeks minimum (cruches, ball work)

    48 Hrs After Surgery

    1. Yes it is normal to have not had a bowel movement yet. It too a good week or more for me to finally have one. You have to remember that you are only taking in liquids...no solids to be broken down and expelled. 2. sleep where you are most comfortable and makes it easier for you to negotiate getting up and down. The pain will subside soon. Did you get pain meds? Use them for your discomfort they really seem to help. 3. I would wait as long as you could to go back to work for comforts sake as well as you are getting used to a new diet and way of eating. Getting started is easier at home until you get a routine down. I waited 3 weeks and still feel I went back too soon. Hope this answers your questions!

    Love the Sleeve

How about gurgling...do you gurgle with your sleeve. I got a fill a couple of weeks ago...number 6 by the way and ever single thing I put in my mouth, liquids or solids, I'm gurgling to the point that it is embarassing. It is soooo loud and I have to excuse myself all the time. Don't get me wrong...gurgling wouldn't bother me one bit if I was losing. I've been eating very little and 85% is great food choices and my scale is not moving at all...in 8 months! Anyway, I too am seriously considering the sleeve. I know we still have to chew well, but I'd be excited to actually eat meat with out throwing it all up. People keep saying we have to make good food choices and get our protien in..well, I'm all for that but would like to be able to keep it down.... I am looooovvving this forum...thanks to everyone for all the great info :001_smile:

    The monkey on my back

Oh Alex... I am right there with ya girl! I gave my hubby that sweet innocent "buy me ice-cream" look a few weeks ago after my unfill... he could not resist my charms. We purchased 3... yeah... that's right... three cartons of icecream! I can honestly say that I ate the majority of 2 of them. Sooooo... I told my DH... NO MORE ICECREAM IN THE HOUSE!!!!! TOld him he must be strong and resist my charms when I try to inlist his cooperation in obtaining the "goods". I go to Mickey Dee's and get a cone when I have a burning desire for icecream now. I don't even buy the "diet" icecream anymore... just leads to running to the store to buy the stuff that actually tastes good. Darcy

    One Month Down...

It amazes me how different doctors have their own timeliness.when I get to pudding consistency next week its gonna be for 6 weeks. At least there are plenty more options but geeze that's a long time compared to other times I have read on here..
  12. I am a march 2013 sleeved. I had neck surgery Nov.2012 and the sleeve four months later. I could not work out becuase I am still recovering from the neck surgery. Then two weeks ago I began to fall and found out that my lower spine had a cyst and I needed surgery again. Two weeks post op and now on a walker. I feel that I am not losing weight because I cannot work out. My pre- op weight was 293. I am now 243 lbs. I don't know if that is normal. I can't work out and I am a vegetarian. I can't find a protein powder that I like. I am only getting about 20 grams of protein in. Any suggestions?
  13. I've been off the grid here for a couple weeks with work and bad weather and family here from out of town..but...wanted to check in. Today I weighed in @243. I was sleeved on December 20th and my beginning weight was 302. I feel good..normal I dare say. I've hit two stalls so far and its really a mystery to me why having a treat and stopping the hardcore workouts has got me out of both of them. But...59 lbs in 3 mos and went from size 22/2x shirts down to 16/L shirts.I'm happy with that. This Saturday I'm doing the 5k color run...HUGE deal for me as since having this survey is the first time in my life I've ever been able to run a mile..(I got emotional and goosbumps the first time I made it..lol). So..its bedtime...let me know how you guys are doing;-)

ab lounge, any one have one?

I second that. I joined a gym last week and was working out on a piece of equipment designed specifically for abs. I commented to the personal trainer that I felt like I was getting more out of it than I ever did my ab lounger that I have at home. His comment was, "if a piece of exercise equipment has the word lounger in it, how effective can it be?" I think I have to agree with him.

    Want Sushi

If it weren't for sashimi and/or poke salad, I'd have a hard time getting my protein in. They're life savers for me. I added sashimi (maguro and salmon) around week 4.

    Starving

Carrie, I am also a week post op and did have the same problem for about 2 nights. You may not be getting enough protein. Try taking in some type of protein supplement before going to bed. I enjoy the Carnation Instant Bfast drink (sugar free) with soy milk and a extra bit of my powder protein mixed in. This definitely takes the hunger away for me. Good luck to you!!

  18. Before I started this new thread, I searched, in vain- using the words, "Emotional"--Nothing. "Tearful"---again, Nothing...Lastly, I entered, "Crying"---No replies. Not one single thread indicating that anyone else on bariatricpal.com was a basketcase....but for me. I had my surgery 11/15/2015...I'm 2 weeks post-op today, as I'm writing this thread. Today, I went grocery shopping with my son...and stopped by the pharmacy @ the grocery store to convey my sincere thanks to them...On the day I was released from the hospital, I had to present with my narcotic prescription in-person...but they didn't have the liquid Oxycodone---but the pharmacist on duty was so nice - and he called it in to another pharmacy in town...All I wanted to do was thank them. Instead, I started crying in Safeway...and my son had to finish the conversation for me. I'm crying now. Someone...anyone...What in the world is going on w/ me? Earlier today, I got the nicest text message from the Director of Nurses where I work as an agency nurse...She messaged me that everyone @ work was wanting to know if I was ok...told me that the nursing team and all the other peeps missed me & they wanted me back @ work ASAP... I sent an elated reply....and cried. I'm at a loss...and really...SERIOUSLY...wanting the tears to stop. On an up-note, it is so very nice to be eating some actual food today....pureed-mush or not, I've enjoyed the most resplendent scrambled egg today...it was almost a "Meg Ryan moment"....LOL

What to do with friends and family?

Have you been overweight your whole life? Have you lost weight before only to regain it? I have. Three times age 12, 17, 30 I lost well over 100 lb and gained it all back and more. They need to get the message that you are more likely to die of a heart attack or stroke than having this surgery. If you needed to have gall bladder surgery or or suffer crippling pain(trust me I know); would they tell you to live with it? If you needed a pace maker would they tell you to think yourself well? Probably not. I started exercising and working on my eating habits because I had horrible knee pain. I lost 30 pounds. That did no however stop me from having a stroke at 39. The way I see it I dodged a bullet. Four months later I went to a seminar. Due to the blood clot I ended up having to wait 7.5 months to have the surgery. I did'nt do any of the last supper stuff I went on a strict diet and lost 50 pounds. One of my sisters ask me if I felt I should have the surgery since I had lost so much weight. I reminder her that I am an excellent dieter but that I can't sustain it forever (my idea of dieting is complete denial of all things fun and tasty).
  20. Hi All, I just have to say that I love my lapband. at first i was discouraged because i was not losing fast, but now i think i have finally hit my green zone! I had been disappointed after a few fills and stopped going in. I had stalled out as a result. The last fill was painful and they couldn't find my port, but eventually did. so i wasn't too keen on doing that again. i guess something in my mind thought i should be able to succeed without fully utilizing the tool, but i am back "on the wagon" and went in for a fill. It took a few tries, but they found my port and filled it .5cc more (totall 3.5ccs). I must have been just about to hit the green zone because now I feel like i am losing faster. and it feels great! It is a huge accomplishment for me to finally be under 200lbs. At my heaviest i was 252-254, surgery weight 248 and now i am 198! Can you believe it! There is a 1 at the beginning of my weight, not a 2, a 1! yay! I still have a lot to lose, but i am on my way! So stick with it and don't miss your fill appts. and it will work for you too! My surgery date was 9-5-12 today is 7-15-13
  21. Yes, I also had the back pain-did not have shoulder pain though-just get up as much as possible and take gasx. It does help with the stomach pain.I also slept with the heating pad and would rotate it from my stomach to my back-after about one week the pain should subside.

    Obsession Over The Scales

Not being rude or anything, but 1,000 cals a day is very low. I would be starving and then risk binging on something. I haven't got to good restriction yet and just on my 1300-1500 cals a day, I'm still hungry, but I stop myself. I can't imagine going lower. I lost 46 pounds using the numbers from MFP and so have countless others. I don't think they are inaccurate. I calculated my on BMR for my weight and height and its like 2400. So, if I consume 1300-1500 good calories a day, it should equal weight loss. I don't forsee myself ever eating 1000 calories a day (unless I get to goal weight and can go longer between smaller meals). My dietician and PA reccommend I eat at least 1200 a day for healthy weight loss. If you drop below that, you risk putting yourself in starvation mode. But, thanks for all the advice on weighing only once a week. I think I will hide the scales somewhere and only get them out for my weekly weigh-in. We'll see what happens....

    Question About Bowel Prep!!!

I second what they said... I was on liquid for two weeks pre-op and did the magnesium citrate starting at 1pm drinking water every hour and then the MC at 4 and then more water every hour until 9pm. It kicked in bad about 5:30 or so and didn't let up for a long time. And get yourself some vaseline for your backside privates...it stings somthing fierce!!
