  1. I am not sure I have advise. But, I had diarrhea the first week- week and a half too. (I had bypass) After that I became INSANELY constipated. Nothing helped, I went 6 days without using the bathroom! When I did go the first time, it was miserable and took me over an hour. Each time got less painful, and less time in between going. I am 4 weeks post op now, and go about every other day but it still doesn't seem normal or feel normal. I never really feel "done" but it's like my body says, that all were letting go of this time. Hard to explain. I am not uncomfortable anymore and hopefully it keeps getting better. Good luck, I hope you get some relief but not the constipation kind!
  2. Welcome and best of luck!! If you have had surgery in the past and struggled with nausea let the anesthesia doc know. They will medicate you a lil differently. Thankfully the RNY folks seem to have less of a problem with nausea than the sleeve patients. I am prone to nausea so the doc put an anti nausea patch on behind my ear before surgery, worked like a charm!! I am two weeks out now. I just advanced to a purée from clear liquids. I am walking everyday, zero pain, zero nausea, good energy level even with nutritional deficits. My only issue was constipation. I will now be adding miralax to a drink daily as needed. Be Well!!
  3. I think it might not be bad for you if you are careful. But I recommend you stay home at least for a week for better recovery. You may chill at home, use it for your homework and then go to the college in good health and readiness to learn. Take your time. Surgery is a serious thing, so there is no reason for risk.
  4. Hi - first time posting and new to forum. I am one week post-op for VSG. I traveled for my surgery and am back at work today. I am really struggling with food. I have mostly had broth, and a few sugar-free drink mixes. My first protein shake today. I have been struggling with explosive-run-to-the-bathroom diarrhea, not always in direct relation to food consumption. This morning I woke up and didn't make it to the bathroom before having an accident in my pants. I hadn't eaten or drank in 12 hours. This has never happened to me before and I am sortof freaking out. I am scared to upgrade my food at all and my stomach always feels on edge. Do I have to do the protien shakes? Has anyone else had trouble advancing to stage 2 of food consumption? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. I traveled for surgery so not have the best access to follow-up care. Really anxious and feeling a lot of regrets right now.

    Answers for a Newbie?

    1. Like many people, I weighed more when I left the hospital than when I checked in, due to the IV fluids. The number on the scale is meaningless for at least the first couple of weeks. I see people here all the time who are freaking out that they haven’t lost weight in the first week, but you need to have patience. The first few weeks are all about getting your protein and water. Don’t even look at the scale if it’s going to make you anxious. I lost 70 pounds before surgery. Nobody seemed to notice until I had lost over 100 pounds total (about 2 months after surgery), which was also about the time I had to buy new pants. But I started out really big (BMI over 60), so it might be noticeable more quickly if you have less to lose. 2. I was on liquids for the first week, so options were limited. I mainly had protein shakes, protein soups, sugar free Jello, and sugar free popsicles. In the puréed stage, I ate a lot of triple zero Greek yogurt and puréed refried beans with enchilada sauce (both with protein powder mixed in). 3. I went back to work 11 days after surgery and I felt good. As I lost more weight, I felt great, full of energy even though I was eating very little. Unfortunately, that started to change about a year post-op, and now I feel weak and tired all the time. 4. I went from not really exercising at all to working out every day. My recommendation for starting out is Leslie Sansone videos on YouTube (someone here recommended them to me). I started with 15-minute videos and now I do about an hour every day. I also got a Fitbit and have over 1 year of 10,000 steps per day. It is hard to stay motivated because sometimes I just don’t wanna, but at the same time, it gets easier the more weight you lose and the better shape you get into. This might be controversial, but it’s what works for me: I exercise every day. No days off. At least 30 minutes of cardio. To me, it’s easier keep it up when I tell myself I have to do it every day. Also, I used to work out when I got home from work. Now I work out first thing in the morning to get it out of the way and that’s a game changer. I wear my workout clothes to bed and put my pre-workout supplement on my nightstand. As soon as I wake up, I drink my pre-workout and start exercising.

    April 2022 Surgery Buddies

    Welcome and congrats on the surgery date. My concerns are the same as yours: nausea and possible delay regarding work. Everything I've read supports remaining hydrated to ward off nausea. As far as work, i'm going to wait till the last day of school, 6/10, and ask for a surgery date around that time. My insurance packet will be complete and ready to submit tomorrow. My practice also does a 2 week full liquid diet prior to surgery. Good luck and welcome!

    April 2022 Surgery Buddies

    I am late coming into this. Insurance approval and scheduling happened very quickly. I am scheduled for RYGB on April 27th. My doctor requires a full liquid diet for two week prior to surgery, so I am right in the middle of that. I'm excited and nervous. My primary fears are the post surgical nausea and delay in return to work.

    Macros

    I am in phase 3 (soft foods) I don't remember all the macro allowances but fat is 13g max! DO YOU KNOW HOW HARD AND PRETTY MUCH IMPOSSIBLE THAT IS???? Unless you live off of fish it is nearly impossible! Which I am not a big fan of but I do get it in sometimes, tuna and mahi is pretty much it though. Yesterday I ate: Fairlife protein shake 2oz Turkey breast/light cheese on a tiny tortilla roll up 4oz Ground turkey breast taco/ light cheese on a tiny tortilla roll up (This was my largest meal so far, I actually ate it in 2 sessions. lol) I had 23g fat yesterday! I know most of it comes from the cheese (even light cheese) but shesh! Even if I had passed on ALL of the cheese (which was only 1.5 servings total) I still would have had 18g fat. Stage 4 and "normal life" it goes up to I think 20g so it will be a little easier. Any pointers? I am going to reach out to my nutritionist also because I don't see him for another 3 weeks.

    I second @toodlerue...I had bypass on March 3 and remember thinking to myself "thank god I didn't have to travel to get the surgery cuz I would not have been able to do the airport/plane". I also had a hiatal hernia repair which turned out to be quite large and cumbersome to fix. I was in a lot of pain post op for about a week and I have a high tolerance for pain. Everyone is different so unfortunately you won't really know till after the surgery. I assumed I would have minimal pain so I was quite surprised when it turned out differently.

    Slow Losers Club…..officially *sigh*

    Well, I don't exercise (I know I should) but I work 40 hours a week, and am tired when I get home. Plus I have always lost slow. It's an effort to eat enough protein, as almost everything makes me nauseous. So going back to the doc in a week. I think I am going to ask to be scoped--if it's a thing that can be fixed, like a stricture or something, then let's do it. Some days food sits well. Other days it is like a petulant child. I can't eat like I should.

    No your cold/sinus issues won't show up in the blood work. Drink some Emergen-C each day for the next two weeks to be in your best health going into surgery.

    VSG and constipation

    Constipation is a huge concern of mine. I have had it twice since surgery (I am 6 weeks post op). I take Miralax once a day and regular Colace (stool softner) once a day. Both bouts of constipation occurred when I forgot to take the Miralax 2 days in a row. I have now set a reminder in my Baritastic app so I don't forget.

    Fluid Intake

    I have a hard time getting it in. I have a 32 oz bottle with 4 oz marks on the side (made myself but you can buy fancy ones). I have to get two bottles in a day. I am 6 weeks post op and have only missed my water intake a few times (mostly the first few days post op). Pre surgery I could chug the water to get it in so now that I cannot do that, it makes it harder. Frequently, I have 24 oz plus to get in after 8 pm but manage to do so. It just has to be foremost in you thoughts.

    Hope everything went well with your surgery. I lost 9lbs prior to surgery so I have really lost 31 since surgery. I’m working on not being so hard on myself. I have noticed frequent stalling but at least the scale is moving down and not up. I look forward to hearing about your progress please keep us posted.

    Slow Losers Club…..officially *sigh*

    I am a super slow lose too! Nov 26 I was 247. 5 months later I'm 198. My dr said I'm slow. I don't workout due to medical reasons. I work 9 hours a day. I'm 63. I got so upset I quit longing. I eat just about the same things daily. Protein drink with protein powder. Chicken, tuna, I'm just not moving much. I'm sad over it. I guess slow and steady wins the race.     Thank you for replying. This is comforting to hear. I think 40 lbs in 7 weeks is pretty good. I would be thrilled. I did hear we may lose the weight slower than others wig regular thyroid.

    1. How long after surgery did it take for you to notice that you were losing weight? Weight loss started pre-surgery and continued through surgery. Fat loss is constant with caloric deficit. Weight loss isn't so shouldn't be taken too seriously or monitored too carefully. 2. What was one of your favorite items to eat right after surgery (would love recipes)? I was on an Optifast only plan for ten days following surgery. I lasted a week and transitioned onto smooth blended soups. I enjoyed neither. 3. How long after surgery did it take you to feel amazing? 4 to 5 days. 4. When exercising, was it hard to get in to the habit of doing so? If it was hard, how did you keep yourself motivated? Easier than before - being lighter is a good feeling generally for walking and my walking speed has increased dramatically.

    1) A couple of weeks after surgery the scales began to move. There's a lot of water retention post-surgery, which throws a lot of people off. Best advice is to just ignore the scale while you're still healing from the procedure. The weight is definitely coming off, but there's some adjusting your body needs to do. It's been through a lot! 2) I had no appetite right after surgery and was on liquids, so I really can't recall anything that I honestly loved. I couldn't tolerate sweet things, so any liquid savoury soup (like a simple miso) was appreciated. Unsweetened matcha lattes made on protein fortified soy milk also kept me happy. 3) It took a good month for me to recover (I had a hernia repair with my bypass). Once the pain had finally gone and things settled in, I began to feel better pretty quickly. The first big improvement honestly came from having quit sugar from the pre-op diet onwards. By about week 3, my skin was clear and I really noticed how much better I was feeling. No more headaches. 4)The trick with exercise is to pick something you enjoy. There's no point joining a gym if you don't enjoy gym fitness. The best exercise is the one you'll actually do. I personally love the gym, it's my happy place so I don't need to motivate myself to go because I look forward to it. Find what gives you pleasure. It might be swimming, riding a bike, or just walking (great time to pop on headphones and listen to a podcast or audio book). There's honestly a fitness activity out there for everyone. Set aside the time for yourself and enjoy it.

What was one of your favorite items to eat right after surgery (would love recipes)? Honestly? Cherry jello and cream of chicken with garlic powder 3. How long after surgery did it take you to feel amazing? Still recovering but I’m 30 and really only had 2 bad bad days and those were days 3 & 4 where the pain was awful 4. When exercising, was it hard to get in to the habit of doing so? If it was hard, how did you keep yourself motivated? Haven’t done much exercising besides walking but motivation is the fact I’ll live longer and healthier.

    7 day post op mental breakdown

    I understand that hormones can change with weight loss surgeries. You have a lot on your plate but you need to stop -just stop with the battles. Let go and give them to God. One person alone with having major surgery amid making life time changes it is too much. Crying is good, but laughter is healing for the body and soul. first take care of you. Find a quiet place, and take time to just be still. Put in a funny movie - something lighthearted that makes you happy or music, a sermon. Call your Dr or support group or find a therapist so you can vent, but get help. we can’t fix the world, and sometimes the more we try, the worse it gets . Concentrate on you. The eviction thing, tell the attorney to handle it, it’s why you pay him. What’s in the past, try to let it stay there. Court things taking forever right now, there’s always a lot of back n forth. Calendar it 4 weeks from today. people can’t hurt you more than what you let them. You stay in control, of you . Learn to respond and not react to unwelcomed news.     April 2022 Surgery Buddies

    ALL: Lots of posts to read today…sending encouragement, healing wishes and motivation to everyone wherever you are in this journey. I’m going to be a June surgery I think. My packet goes to the insurance company this Friday and there are not any days off from school except for memorial day weekend until June 13…last day of school for kids is June 10. My fingers are crossed for June 13-ish. I am eagerly reading everyone’s input on the liquid phase pre-surgery (I think mine is 2 weeks long), your immediate post-op comments, and everything else. Your experience and perspective is extremely helpful. I’m particularly interested in comments regarding recovery from hernia repair/ RNYgb. Keep up the good work! Thanks in advance.
  23. Had my 2 week post-op appointment today and since the liquid diet and revision surgery, I’m down 30 pounds. Honestly, couldn’t believe it! Best part of the appointment was the approval to move on to soft foods though! Haha! Hope everyone is still kicking major butt! Good luck to all the upcoming surgery dates! Can’t wait for you to join us on the “loser’s bench”!
  24. I am so happy I found this forum today. I am on day 6 of my Preop diet. I cannot even imagine doing a liquid diet for 2 weeks. I am so sorry you are suffering so much. I am on high protein diet with 2 shakes. I feel so weak and depressed. I was a carbiholic for sure. I am relieved to see I am not the only one! Please reach out to your support team for help.   25. Hey all. I’m 7 days post op from gastric bypass. I don’t know how to change my profile from pre op right now. Things have been going really great actually. I’ve been handling things really well all things considered. Meeting my goals, even lightly walking and exercising every day. My mood was fantastic and I was blessed with very little pain. Before my surgery I went through a lot. I already got postponed several times over the course of 2 years, I started pursuing this in Nov 2019. I finally got scheduled in the middle of March. However I have been dealing with battling legal issues (retaliatory eviction and a civil rights discrimination case), a severely abusive relationship that I ended in the two weeks of my pre op, reporting him to several police agencies for the abuse, and just a LOT of emotional stress. It was hard but I did it and I felt so proud, and until today I felt amazing about it. I felt it was truly a test of sorts because I did not relapse with nicotine once, I didn’t binge eat the entire time. I hadn’t heard a single thing from my attorney about my eviction and I never got a response to my civil rights case in almost two months so I wasn’t expecting to get an email today in which I was severely slandered and read several upsetting abusive lies about me. The email wasn’t so much what bothered me. I had a great morning where I had tons of energy, I sang in the shower and danced around a little bit. Did my make up. It was just a minor set back, until I went to go tell my mother who I am staying with for just a little since I live in a basement level with a huge flight of dangerous stairs in my house. She was really dismissive and she wouldn’t listen to me. The whole situation was triggering me but I did what I was supposed to do, go tell my support. She was really mean to me and it completely set me off. I think I had one of those hormone reactions I was warned about, or perhaps just several weeks without any kind of food, quitting all my vices cold Turkey at the same time, everything just hitting me all at once but I lost it. I sobbed uncontrollably for several hours and I raged. I was so angry. Every time I thought I soothed myself, the crying would start again. I cried so hard I felt like I pulled something and now I’m in a lot of pain. I seriously wept and wailed for so long. I tried to reach out to supports but they were incredibly busy today. I finally decided to just go to sleep so I slept for several hours. I woke up and I feel only a little better, having stopped sobbing. But I feel like I got steam rolled. I do keep having sniffles and little crying fits. I lost all my momentum and motivation I had and I’m sincerely worried I’ll be permanently depressed again, which depresses me even further as I have felt so good the last few weeks. I didn’t relapse with over eating, I didn’t break my diet other than not meeting all my goals but I’m trying to catch up. I’m just so nauseated from crying so hard. Please tell me this will get better. What can I do? I’m still dealing with several toxic situations or the aftermath of them. I’m trying my best but I’m scared right now.
