  1. This is new to me, I've never seen anywhere that said that RNY increases the risk of vomiting, I know the sleeve sure does, so many posts about vomiting issues and they are all from those with sleeves. As far as dumping, I don't experience this either. It's one of those listed potentials but isn't a guarantee. And even still, it would only happen if you ate things you really shouldn't in the first place. I found this, it lists "Nausea and vomiting" as common, but the catch is, that's for food intolerance not "just because you had the RNY. https://www.bariatric-surgery-source.com/gastric-bypass-side-effects.html It's important to note that the same site reports Nausea and Vomiting for the same reasons as the bypass, but with the added potential for that symptom to occur not only for food intolerance but GERD issues as well, in which, 1 out of 5 Sleeve patients will have GERD issues, some sites list this higher. Absolutly! The information I provide is simply for the sake of having the information. I'm not going to do anything other than provide what I can find for facts on the surgeries so that folks are better informed. Sadly not all doctors have their patients best interest in mind. All the "must do 2 surgery revisions when it's not medically necessary doctors, those that are being paid to do one surgery over the other (and yes they do exist), those that aren't comfortable doing one surgery of the other and try to sway the patient into their preferred surgery (that happens often as well) I love my surgeon and I trust what she says, but that doesn't mean I don't research it myself and confirm what she's said. It's always best to be as informed and educated on a topic as possible and not just take someone's word for it based on the fact that they are a doctor. I work at a hospital, I see this stuff all day, every day. At the end of the day, it's your call, I hope things work out well and that everything goes off without a hitch.

    Do I make the cut?

Hey Taylor (don't worry about not taking my advise, I wont' get offended and call you out for making your own decisions.) I hit 370 sometime in 2010 and decided to do something about it. I chose the band, the sleeve wasn't fully approved yet, and the bypass scared me. The idea of it being permanent changes to my anatomy bothered me. I wanted something that could be removed at a future date. So, I went with the band. Nov 2011, I had the band installed. Surgery wasn't that big of a deal, I was kept overnight because I have sleep apnea. Pain was moderate but tolerable. After what was covered by insurance, I was out of pocket somewhere around the 5k mark. I took 2 months out of work, mainly because I had to drive to and from Boston, and travel times were minimum 1 hour, upwards of 4 hours, so I wanted to be 100% healed before doing all that driving. I followed all the instructions I was given, got my fills and adjustments as required, and ultimately lost 70 lbs within a year or so. (combined with the pre-op diet etc). I'd get stuck on things maybe once or twice a week. Leafy greens and other fibrous veggies that didn't chew down to "baby food" were uncomfortable enough where I started to avoid them. I got stuck on lean meats, etc. So I got frustrated that, the healthy foods I was supposed to be eating, caused issues thanks to the band. I gained a bit back, then fought to lose it again, this happened a few times. I never could break that 300 mark, no matter what I did. The band was easily eaten around, things I shouldn't be eating... were the things that didn't cause issues. I became depressed, I felt like a failure, the band was reported to have all these amazing benefits... and I wasn't seeing them, I stopped checking in with my surgeon unless I needed some adjustments due to illness or getting stuck badly enough where my stomach swelled up. I was still way too overweight, wasn't eating as well as I should be, I just wasn't happy with how things were not living up to the bands reported outcomes. After almost 7 years with the band, I finally dragged myself back into my surgeons office, defeated, and I confessed to my surgeon that I was a failure. Boy was I surprised when she told me that my outcomes and dealings were typical, and that it wasn't me that was the problem, it was the band. She went out to tell me that 2 of the major manufacturers have stopped making bands and replacement parts for them. We discussed our options for revision, I was set on the sleeve. My surgeon said she refuses to do band to sleeve revisions because the staple line for the sleeve runs right across the band area, and that scar tissue build up at the band site increases the chances for staple line failure. She advised that others in the same practice would do the sleeve revision, but she won't because of the added complication rates. I trust my surgeon, and I really wanted her to do the revision because she installed the band in the first place. So, I pondered for a bit and finally decided that the bypass, as scary as it sounded, was my best option. Restriction only didn't work for me with the band, why would I think that restriction only with the sleeve would be any different. I needed the malabsorption to ensure that I would lose the weight I needed to. March 2nd I started my pre-op diet, March 21st I was revised to the bypass and I'm down almost 60 lbs since March 2nd. I truly wish I went bypass from the get go. The revision surgery was not uneventful. What should have taken 2 hours, took 6+. My band, even though all scans, imaging, scoping showed nothing wrong, the band was 100% completely encapsulated in scar tissue and took my surgical team more than 3 times longer to remove. I'm not even sure what would have happened if I left it in place. Hopefully that answers some of your questions, if you have more, please feel free to shoot me a message.

Do u drink pepsi and coke??

I have long term WLS friend with whom I was first banded (SAGB) in 2000. She developed complications a good 7yrs ago and she went the revision to Duodenal Switch route. She's required re-sleeving once in the last 5 years and says she could probably do with another resleeve, but is currently unable to fund it privately. She's a major diet coke drinker. We're all different. It's just doesn't take much to work out that with no carbonated drink addiction, my own band was not removed until February 2011. My pouch was intact, the port tubing was leaky. I was sleeved on the 18th Sept. and I don't expect to ever need resleeving. If I do, I can guarantee it won't be down to fizzy drinks since that's something which is absolutely under my own control. I can't make anyone elses' choices for them, nor would I want that kind of onerous responsibility. Neither can I remain silent when I've seen first hand resleeving required in a big diet coke drinker.

    Bougie Size

I am seeing a surgeon tomorrow for advice on a revision so will take it from there. I always believed that the stomach could never return to its complete original size so that is why I was so shocked at what my gastro doc told me. He said it looked large and normal sized so that combined with my short lived restriction I would be very curious to know what's what inside. I need to research more about the fundus...it looks like it might play a huge part too. Thank you for your help Xx
  5. So I had the DS a week ago today, due to some weight regain 5 years out from VSG. I have been searching and searching for ppl's experience revising from VSG to DS. I want to hear from you!! I know my weight loss will be slower than with virgin DS, but I guess I'm lacking Faith that I can lose at all, just relying on malabsorption. I am watching what I'm eating (portions and carbs) . Please share with me your experience and loss! And how long was your belly sore? I'm still pretty sore, with the vsg I was back to normal in a couple days. Not so with DS!!
  6. Thank you for sharing, I'm having band to sleeve revision at that hospital on the 31st. It's nice to know what it's like. Speedy recovery to you!

    My band has slipped

i found out mine had slipped as i wasn't loosing weight and have reflux only slightly but i get it more now. Not sure if it slipped before i fell pregnant or after. i had the barium swollow also and that showed that it had slipped not sure how much it had slipped though. i feel like i eat a lot some days and other days i don't eat much as i have reflux. I have booked in for the revision surgury on the 26th Novemeber so fingers crossed that it is easily fixed!
  9. I had gastric bypass 29 years ago. A lot of scare tissue. It had tone revised 10 years ago. So this brings me to Monday's surgery. The surgery time was 5 Hours. They replace all the old mesh and liced the scare tissue. A very Big surgery. This was my last chance to have a bad put in. All went great. Very sore and 9 holes. It was worth every bit of the pain I had it done at Columbia Pres in NYC. Dr Marks Bessler, he is my hero. Two days later I am on pain Med and clear broth 2oz every 20 mins. Two Baristric advantage shakes a day for a week. For today I am working the band. One day at a time. Good Luck Bill
  10. I just had my sleeve done on Tuesday December 9. They are making me stay here for 2 reasons. First I am vomiting up Water which is all I've had thus far. I had to take the swallow test 2x because I was too swollen for it to go through on Wednesday. Today I passed it. I'll mention that I am a band to sleeve revision Second, I am now in atrial fibrillation. I have the kind that comes rarely. I'm not typically in a fib. The last time I had a fib episode was in October of 2013. This current time was because they dropped the ball on my meds. I did bring them with me but they wouldn't let me take them. I guess in this part I'm just venting because now tomorrow morning they want to shock me back into normal rhythm. I'm kind of upset because I was asking them for meds to the point I was getting very aggravated. I began to get a bit irate and asked them. Don't you know I could have a stroke? It was very unsettling and I am going to make a formal complaint. They all just sat around saying "ok ok we'll call your doctor." Ok enough of that. So my main advise I want to give is to make sure the hospital you are going to has something in place for you even if it's not the exact meds you take just so you won't have to go through what I am going through. It was horrifying. Yes I'm still in a fib today but yesterday I was reaching almost 200 beats a minute. Today it's still very irregular. But much slower. I was finally able to insist on my meds which my doc said I could swallow with 1 sip of water. It's a slippery slope because an hour or so after I take them I vomit. Just hope some of them are going into my bloodstream. Now for my main question. Did anyone else vomit even after passing the swallow test? I'm drinking tiny sips and about an hour later it comes up. Other than that I have not much pain or gas. This has been happening all day today

Band to RNY 12/6....scale hasn't moved

I assume you are probably at purees or just starting solids. I did not feel restriction/full till I was eating solids...meats like chicken provide the most feeling of fullness. I was told to measure everything so didn't really go beyond a 1/2 cup portion. If you are looking for restriction make sure you avoid sliders like sauces etc with your meat. I assume you had similar instructions to eat meat first then vegetables and carbs if there is room. One thing to keep in mind is as a revision patient we can end up with a bigger pouch than normal because the Banff stretches your esophagus. So an ordinary bypass patient has i hunk a 30 cc stomach. Mine is 55 cc.

    Reflux, my poor esophagus

Yes acid reflux is a known (at least it is now) complication of the VSG. Let me preface this with the fact that I loved my sleeve while it worked. Anyhow I had gotten GERD with my lap band and in 2010 when I revised to sleeve GERD was not as well known to be a serious side effect of the VSG. My GERD just gets worse over time. I am taking 40mg Omep in the AM and Ranitidine in the PM before bed because I choke on my acid during the night. It's gotten so bad that now I'm working with my bariatric surgeon to revise me to the Bypass. Don't I wish I knew that already!! I would have just revised to the Bypass without this problem in between. But hindsight is 20/20 - and I didn't know. Good luck to you.
  13. Dr Ariel Ortiz at Obesity Control Center is the BEST. He did my LapBand in 2006. He is a little higher priced than other Tijuana Drs but 1st class all the way. If you do research your will find him everywhere. The Doctors show, Oprah, Dateline, there was a write up in Newsweek naming him one of the top bariatric surgeons in the US. For my revision to sleeve in May 2016 I used Dr Fernando Garcia. Another first class experience but cost wise he was in my budget. I did a lot of research before using him too. I had zero complications and felt I was VERY well taken care of. His surgery center is new and state of the art. PM me if you need any other questions answered.

Best WLS for my weight? Process?

I was just going to suggest you check out the duodenal switch and saw Life Under Construction beat me to it. It's a good option for you to check out. Most patients stop their diabetes medication within the first month. I'm six weeks post-op from the DS (revision after the lap-band), and it's been a good choice for me. While I never had diabetes, the weight has steadily dropped off, unlike when I had the lap-band. I looked at all of the options and became well educated on the life time commitment before I decided which surgery had the best long-term results and lifestyle I could live with. Wishing you the best.

    Telling the family?!?

I don't have one person that's happy about my decision to get VSG. I'm scheduled for revision from lapband to VSG in May. Nobody was supportive of my lapband surgery either. It's like they are all saying "I told you so" since I've had a difficult time with the band.

    DeLarla's BIG Day!!!

Breathe, breathe! I know it's freaky, but this drainage is not unusual. I didn't have it with my original surgery, but my port revision surgery drained horribly for about a week. There is an amazing amount of Fluid that can come out of there, so you may want to keep it covered with something absorbant to protect your clothing/sheets. My port site actually was sore, although not infected, and I found expressing the fluid out manually helped with that part. The fluid must have been building up inside a pocket. As long as it is clear (mostly clear, a clearish orange), there is no infection and not to worry. However, if the incision becomes hot, or the fluid starts to thicken-up and look more like pus, a visit to your doc is in order.
  19. My personal experince with a slip: Last year, I started having nightime reflux. I got RX Prilosec from my dr and took OTC Zantac also. Plue popping Tums like they were candy. Nothing helped. Had to sleep propped up on 3 pillows and still had acid coming up all night. Finally after about 3 mths, I went to my band dr. He said I had a small slip and took out 1/2 of my 10cc fill. No more reflux. 4 wks later, he put back 1cc. still no reflux but also no restriction. He put in another 1cc. Reflux that very nite. So he took out the previous 1cc he put in and said I can live with a small slip as long as I no longer have symtoms. No more reflux. Then, last Friday, I started having abdominal pain. Nothing really painful, just bothersome. Led my normal life for 3 days with stomach pain. Got really bad on monday nite and found myself in the ER at 3 am. After a CT, it showed a large slipped band - actually herniated. They emptied my entire band and now I have to have a revision done. Talked to my drs office today and they said it can wait (as long as my band was entirely empty) till after I get back from my cruise to Alaska in 3 weeks. Thank God. I really didn't want to be on liquids only during my cruise. Thats my personal experience with a slip. Hope you don't have one. It's a pain (literally!) Marci

NYC and HIP health insurance ??

I have HIP also and in May I was looking at HIP's website and under medical guidelines it said that bariatric surgery was revised on April 15, 2008, I printed this out because I was so mad. In the beginning of April I had called HIP to find out what their requirements were and I was told it had to be medically necessary. So I made all the appointments for pre-op. Then when I found out from HIP that under these new rules I needed a six month supervised diet it changed everything. Good Samaritan hospital said that if I had to do the six month diet starting from april then some of my pre-op tests would have to be repeated because they need to be current within 3 months of surgery. Now on HIP's website it is showing the old rules for bariatric surgery dated December 13, 2006. So I called HIP again and they just give me the run around and will not directly answer my question about this six month diet. Have either of you talked to HIP directly? I spoke with a nurse in the managed care department and she was very nasty and said that she could not answer anything without the surgeon filing the paperwork. I told her that I can't see the surgeon until all my clearances are done which includes the clearance from the nutritionist and if I need a six month diet the nutritionist will not clear me until after that. This entire process is so upsetting. Lisa

    Bypass or Sleeve

I had GERD pre-surgery. No way would I get the sleeve. GERD doesn't get worse for *everyone* who gets the sleeve, but it does for a sizable minority. There are several people on bariatric internet forums who've revised to bypass because of it. I would definitely get the bypass. I suspect this surgeon is just more familiar with the sleeve - and it's also a quicker, easier surgery, so less complicated for him. I'd be really tempted to get a second opinion. You're the one who'll have to leave with the potential GERD problem, not him.

    Surgery Date!

Congratulations!!!! Are you excited, nervous, scared lol all of the above??? Sent from my SM-G935T using the BariatricPal App All of the above! Lol my surgeons office is submitting my file to insurance this week so I'm more nervous about that right now!! Lol Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App I know the feeling. We submit tomorrow. I have put so much into this, I'd be unhappy if they denied. But they are pretty straightforward with what they are looking for. Praying and fingers crossed for us. Sent from my SM-G935T using the BariatricPal App Yay!!! Let me know when you hear!! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App Everything went well, met with the nutritionist. Got my list of approved foods/liquids. Coordinator says she will submit either today or tomorrow and it should be approved no problem as everything they ask for is checked off. Only concerning point is my surgeon is really against me doing the sleeve. He prefers the band. Told me I'd likely gain all the weight back. It was very off putting and almost made me change my mind back to band. Sent from my SM-G935T using the BariatricPal App Wow. That baffles me. My surgeon hasn't done a band in over 2 years. He has seen better results with the sleeve. It almost sounds like your surgeon has an ulterior motive for pushing the band. Stand your ground girl. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App Lol yeah it's because fills are self pay. What a nice way to rack up a ton of money from me and then bring me back in after a year so for revision to sleeve or bypass. It's a money thing purely. I've read too many reviews from people who had band and done research. I'm not setting myself up for failure to lime your pockets. Sent from my SM-G935T using the BariatricPal App
  23. Hi all!! I had the band removed and was sleeved on 5/2017. I immediately had bad reflux but was told to just keep taking the meds. Here I am today 17 months out with extremely bad reflux. I’ve regained about 20lbs because only crackers and bread don’t give me flare ups. I’m choking nightly even while sleeping on three pillows and can’t eat anything without acid attacks. I switched surgeons offices because I kept getting the runaround from the sleeve doctor. So far in the past 6 weeks with my new doctor I’ve had an endoscopy which showed a hiatal hernia, esophageal weakness, I’ve had the 96 hour Bravo ph test which showed severe reflux. Tomorrow I am having post prandial esophageal manometry to check pressures and such. My current doctor is an esophageal specialist and has already suggested he cant do much in the way of help except changing meds which he has already done. He did suggest at my next appointment with him to also meet with his bariatric partner to discuss surgery. If they suggest RNY, is that considered reflux surgery or a bariatric revision in the eyes of insurance? Thanks!!
  24. Alright this used to be called "My small and pathetic NSVs!" but they told me off and said it wasn't small and pathetic... I did try to revise the thread name but it won't let me :scared: So I have two NSV's which gave me a bit of a smile today. Here they are in all their glory.... 1. I am wearing my old workout shirt today. This shirt once was "toit loik a toiger" (tight). It is now looking like a comical dress that comes halfway down my thighs. 2. I just got back from the grocery store. Normally after hauling the cases of Water and all the groceries, plus walking around the store, my heart is beating like a snare drum from a thrash metal band. Today after checking my pulse... it wasn't even off of resting (thanks dreadmill). Okay, thats my teeny little flag waving for the day. Feel free to share yours
  25. I had my sleeve to bypass revision in May of this year, 7 years after my sleeve. Wish I had it done sooner! i have not experienced any complications. The worst side effect is that different food (their smells) can cause minor nausea. And that lasts only a few minutes lol.
