  1. My son found out his insurance Caresource requires 9 months. We only know this because he went with me to Bariatric seminar, I have different insurance that required a lot less. Technically he has 37BMI with 1 comorbidty so would qualify but he hasn't had his "come to Jesus" moment about his weight. So I'm not pressuring at this point, remember I wouldn't have taken it too well, back in my younger days. Although I do wish I had been smart enough,to seek it in my 30,40, or even 50s,and avoided the joint replacements from where my weight,"sproing- ed" them beyond easy repair. Oh you know hindsight,is 20/20[emoji12] whereas our every day is slightly flawed[emoji22]But we keep on keeping on until we reach the finish. Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app

    Excited but Scared

This is soooo soooo normal. It's our fat brain trying to keep us down on the farm with our old relationships with food and the stuff that got us to the SMO ball. ((hugs)) You gotta do the head work and really answer some tough questions to yourself. You could also start now and work with a counselor that specializes in bariatric care and food addictions. In the end, you have to consciously put your fears aside and make the choice to take a step out in faith. Get the surgery. And you will see, how silly your fears were. After the surgery, things for me were VERY VERY different. So much easier. Easier than I ever imagined and now I wonder why on earth I put this off for 2 years. I could already be at goal. You'll get there. Keep working at it. It is a job. It isn't easy, nor is the surgery a short cut. It's simultaneously the easiest and the HARDEST thing I've ever done!
  4. Travelled to NYC last night and realized I forgot my multivitamins. I’m only 5 weeks post surgery. Where can i buy a good bariatric multi in the city?
  5. Do whatever works for you! Everyone has different comfort levels regarding how open they are about their surgery; no one way to do it is automatically better than any other. What works for me or anyone else may not be a good option for you (that holds true for a lot of things to do with bariatric surgery, actually.)
  6. I am 2+ years post sleeve. How much is too much water in a day? I find that if I’m not drinking ~3L/day or more, I get headaches and feel terrible. To do this and also not be drinking during/around meals, I am constantly drinking through out the day - and also constantly peeing. Sorry if TMI. Lately my PCP doctor made me feel like that is unusually high. The national academies recommendation is 3.7L for adult men per day. Just wondering if there is an upper limit for Bariatric patients. I hear 64oz thrown around here but that seems low to me as a long term goal, perhaps something to aim for closer to surgery day - I would be dehydrated on that little at this point....especially if I’m regularly exercising. How much water do you drink per day?

    Fat Guy Survival

You are exactly right. Whether its stigma, ego, lack of confidence, lack of knowledge, men--who would really beneift from a bariatric procedure--aren't doing it enough. And that's my mission in creating The Fat Guy Survival Guide--to be able to connect with and create a supportive community to help people realize that a life changing solution is at their fingertips. Would love your help and support in driving this mission with me.

    Spouse of a WLS patient

I don't think there is a spouse board, but Welcome and post often in my opinion! You will learn so much here. I know I have -- and continue to learn daily. How come you have to be in the hotel for 10 days? People who go down to Mexico don't even hang out that long post surgery and most of those have an air trip home! I was out of the hospital (RNY) literally within 24 hours--gone by 11:30am so I avoided a 2nd day hospital charge. And was up walking at home (1 1/2 hours away) that same day as soon as we got home. I went back for a 1 week, 2week, 1month, and will go for a 3month, 6month, 9month, 12month check up. The drive will be way cheaper than 10 days of hotels and being cooped up in an unfamiliar bed/territory. My recliner chair made sleeping so easy and comfy. No way would I have been comfy in bed or on a couch. And having my own things around me made it easy. I really commend you for supporting your hubs and not eating in front of him, especially on the pre-op. I made dinner for my non-bariatric DH during pre and post op despite being on liquids. I enjoyed it. I view that I'M the one getting the surgery. No one's life should have to change because of my decision. So everyone eats their normal routine around me and I'm perfectly ok with that. It's life as usual. But DH is on a weight loss plan with me -- by choice, and it's just the two of us. I think the best thing Mr. F. has helped me with is just being a mental/emotional support system--allowing me to talk and process with him as a sounding board. He's verbally affirming, and shows emotionally and physically that he appreciates my efforts. He's one of my cheerleaders. When I am struggling with head stuff, he's there to help, but isn't pushy about it. He walks with me and is helping me increase my physical endurance. And we do fun stuff together again--outside the house that is not food motivated. Hope those ideas help you! Again, please post often!
  12. I'm currently doing the presurgery liquid diet. I drink bariatric advantage chocolate flavored meal replacement, premier protein chocolate rtd, muscle milk strawberry rtd, and unjury chicken, The unjury chicken is foamy, but it has been a life saver during my presurgery diet. My nutritionist gave me strawberry premier protein which was delicious, but I haven't been able to find it for sale anywhere.

    Vitamins

Wondering what type of multivitamins people are taking after gastric sleeve. My surgeon said that I will need to take a b complex along with the multivitamin as well...so name brands for both would be appreciated. FYI I’ve tried the Bariatric advantage vitamins and they just don’t sit well with my stomach!
  14. Probably because it's not fixing something broken or painful, you know? It's like we equate the "OW this hurts" to "Yes this surgery needs to happen." However with Bariatric Surgery, it's not fixing an owie. It's preventing big future ones so it doesn't feel as necessary or logical? I guess that's how I feel.
  15. I'm having my first appointment at the bariatric hospital at the end of this month. It's going to be 4 hours; I'm going to talk to an insurance person, a psychologist, and a nutritionist. I don't know where it's going from there. I started my diet consultations with my primary care this January, they said I might need 6 months of them, but am not sure. I'll find out more at the appointment. I'm so excited! Sent from my XT1575 using BariatricPal mobile app
  16. I recently tried the powdered form of premier protein (chocolate flavor), and it was terrible. Oddly enough, the pre-made chocolate shake wasn’t too bad. I also like the strawberry premier protein, but the last one I drank ended up being lumpy and stuck to the bottom of the carton. I didn’t notice until I drank the liquid sitting on top of it. I ended up getting pretty sick that night, so I’m not sure if it was related. I can say that I like the flavor of the total lean chocolate shakes, so I am going with them until my surgery on 4/16. I also have my bariatric clinics version, which is lactose free, and I’m saving that for after surgery. The taste is a bit more tame and you only have to mix it with 4oz of water. 17. The diet you've started is designed to shrink the size of your liver which is, if you're like most bariatric patients, fatty and overly large. Since your stomach is behind your liver, your surgeon will have to lift it up and out of the way in order to operate on your stomach. The smaller you can get that liver, the easier it is for your surgeon and the less time you'll spend on the operating table. The first 3-4 days are the toughest. Your body adjusts somewhat after that and things get easier. Good luck!

    Life after keto

Take a look at the Mayo Clinic Diet. It's based on the Mediterranean diet....which is the diet eaten by the people who have the best longevity in the world...lowest heart disease and cancer rates, too. I have never felt better in my life or enjoyed my diet more....than when I started eating the Mayo Clinic Diet. (have been on it since June of last year) My nutritionist is fully supportive of my continuing this diet. I have no problem hitting my 60+ g of protein goal, and I keep my calories between 1000-1200 a day. Some nutritionists will really push keto after bariatric surgery....but my office serves a population of people from all over the world...many vegans, some following very different cultural eating habits...so they're more open to different paths up the mountain so to speak:) Best wishes to you on your journey.

    Male Before and After Pictures

You won’t find that many pictures of men as only 20% of bariatric procedures are done on men. It’s a crazy statistic but true. More men need to be educated about the benefits of bariAtric surgery. I’m 3 months post sleeve and down 80 pounds. Life changing. And now I’m starting to blog about it to hopefully help other men find what we did. Follow me on Twitter@fatguysurvival. My pic is on there.

    Fat Guy Survival

Hey guys. I’m Scott and I’m just over three months post sleeve. Down over 80 pounds now. This has been the best decision I have ever made. My only regret is that I didn’t do it sooner! In prep for my procedure, I did a ton of research. And here’s one startling data point. Of all bariatric procedures done in the US, only 20% are on men. Yes, only 20%. I’m on a mission now to create a community to help, motivate, coach and inspire other fat guys just like me to lead healthier lives. I’d love to hear from you. Talk to you and create an army of former fat guys to help men make the best decision for themselves. Let’s talk here or follow me on Twitter@fatguysurvival. Thanks

    Constipation and plateau

After you are constipated for over 5 or 6 days, your body will be so bound up that normal steps to relieve constipation will simply not work. At this stage I normally insert a glycerin suppository up my rear end. It is just that you do not want that to be a normal approach. For me I found that if I eat an apple before I go to bed at night, I generally will have a bowl movement the next morning. But I have to eat the skin of the apple along with the pulp. Apple sauce does not work. At 9 weeks post-op, my guidelines showed a transition to solids but eating apples began at Month 10 as acceptable according to the guidelines. So perhaps you stomach has not healed to the point that apples are permitted and therefore this might be an unacceptable option. These are some of the options for constipation provided in previous threads: Smooth Move Herbal Tea Prune Juice (warmed) Prunes (4 in the morning and 4 at night) Magnesium citrate Insoluble fibers (Garden of Life Raw Fiber or Renew Life Triple Fiber). Haribo Sugar Free Gummy Bears (be very careful with this one because it can quickly cause the runs) Aerobic Magnesium 07 Ground Flax Seeds (but don’t try to grind it yourself). Use 2 tablespoons per glass of water every night before going to bed. Bowel Clear (herbal blend)

    Multivitamins

Thank you so much for posting this!!! You would just need to add VitB12 and calcium to this. I believe that according to bariatric standards the B12 in these isn't enough.
  24. As a self-pay, I elected to have my surgery done through Mexico Bariatric Center in Tijuana. I arrived yesterday where a driver picked me up to take me to the hospital for pre-ops where they took blood, gave me an EKG and finished up paperwork. Then another driver took me to the hotel. Everyone has been so nice, knowledgeable and professional!!! I leave in an hour as I have to be at the hospital at 6AM, again a driver will take me from the hotel to the hospital. I am feeling so many things right now...grateful for this opportunity to repair my health yet very anxious as is to be expected with someone who has been treated for anxiety disorder for years. I think anyone would be a bit nervous but I feel confident in the doctors here and I truly believe I can use this took as intended to help me reduce my weight therefore reducing the pressure causing pain on my arthritic joints. Now, if I end up being a totes hottie in the process, can’t say I would mind! love to all and thank you for all of you support!!!
