Protein and calorie deficits after surgery

Full liquids. Cottages cheese, yourt, cream soups, etc. If I eat cottage cheese and yogurt at every meal I can get to around 30, I'd get 42 of I were able to do 4 ounces at every meal but sometimes you just can't, you know?

    Your daily routine

Early on I planned my meals/snacks in my food tracker the night before. Then printed it and put times next to meals based on my calendar. Then checked things off. That way if I knew I was in meetings all morning...I could plan 1/2 a protein bar on a break...if I was at my desk maybe it was yogurt and fruit. I'm actually going back to this method this week because I've gotten cocky and haven't tracked the past few months...also haven't lost during that time Good luck!

Purée Diet - I'm so lost

Cottage cheese has lots of protein! Hummus, Soups, mashed sweet potatoes, avocado, Greek yogurt ricotta cheese. eggs yummy over easy here, boiled scrambled. Now pureed fish (white fish) and chicken. I'll be perfectly honest. I didn't puree those, but I chewed them very well. Now getting creative with your meals keeps it more tolerable and interesting. But I will always have my Breakfast Protein shake Sent from my XT907 using the BariatricPal App

I figured you did add me and that was you. I'm glad you have me on there though. I am so jealous that your gonna be in Florida and on the beach. Where are you going? I am supposed to start the purees tommrow but I've been eating actual foods. The liquids aren't keeping me full at all. I don't think milk settles with me that good so cream of soups aren't good for my stomach. I've been doing smoothies and I've been eating some fruits. I've been having lactose free yogurt too. Even though that has milk, it's low fat and barely in there. I've actually tried chilli too. Lunch meat and cheese. Everything is sitting with me. It was hard at first because I need to learn to eat smaller bites. I've been in a funk the last couple days where I don't really want food. It's bad for me not to follow the diet we are on but if I'm hungry and can't get full on liquids, then I'm gonna try new things. I am at 241 exactly today. So I've lost 15 pounds within this month and with the 10 pounds lost on pre op diet would make 25 pounds all together. Me working and walking more is definitely helping.
  5. Thanks Annek for asking. I am still trying to get in the higher amounts of Protein and more Water. Some days I can do it other days I have trouble with some foods. The Dr said I can have oatmeal and vegs. Like this morning I use 1/2 cups of oatmeal with 1 cup of protein silk and 3 teaspoons of Syntrax vanilla Protein powder. Mixed it all together and microwaved it for 2 1/2 minutes. Had 4 small bits and couldn't eat any more. There was so much left over I can have for Breakfast for 2 more days. Next time I am going to have to use just 1/4 of a cup oatmeal. Late afternoon I didn't feel I could eat anything so I had a shake. Tonight after 3 oz of Turkey I was able to get about 1 1/2 tablespoons of cauliflower. I haven't weighed myself since Tuesday but took some more MOM today to help things along. I am trying to only weigh in on Tuesdays. Been keeping myself busy with bike riding. Am up to 4.65 miles as of yesterday despite the 22 mph winds. Am also designing and assembling baby boy favors for an office baby shower. Plus have been working on my sequin art. Keeping my hands busy is something I have done for years but even more so now. I received 2 bathing suits today but will have to work on doing something for the girls as there is just not enough support despite the fact that they both have molded cups. I still have some time before I will be able to wear them as I still can't lift my legs high enough to get out of the pool. However that day will be coming soon I hope. Songsmith I do eat yogurt that has 12 grams of protein and have no problems with getting them down. Katladee The hot chocolate is protein and takes the place of coffee which I can't have yet. On the 2 days I work I do have protein food for breakfast and no hot chocolate. Stephanie I think your right the same thing kind of happened to me too. The first 2 weeks I was great and than things went down hill a bit. However I feel like things are getting better each day. Perforce Your right it did! That is why I need not to listen to the Dr and keep my protein between 60 to 80 grams daily not 41 as he said.

@@esskay77 I found it in Wegmans, do you guys have a Wegmans? If not, I'm sure it has to exist somewhere. The brand's full name that I've used and loved is "Green Mountain Farms Greek Cream Cheese and Greek Yogurt" and it comes in the same kind of block as regular cream cheese. Hope you can find it.

Another way of making pancakes that is healthy and delicious is to mash up a banana and an egg, toss in some cinnamon and I like to add some pumpkin pie spice as well, and cook it like a regular pancake. It's really yummy! But I think I was told to wait until at least a couple months to try more solid food like that. If you're bored of the same old same old, you could try some of the things I really loved in the puree stage. My favorite was turkey or chicken chili from trader joe's with a dollop of low fat or fat free sour cream. It has a surprisingly satisfying texture even after being pureed. Another good one is cottage cheese or greek yogurt with pumkpin puree or refried black Beans and perhaps a little bit of taco sauce. I also enjoyed canned white meat chicken pureed with greek yogurt cream cheese and a little splash of cream of chicken Soup and a little splash of milk to make it all blend well - this tasted EXACTLY like hamburger helper, somehow. A bit further on when you get to soft foods, you can try my absolute soft food favorite - a turkey meatball or two mashed up with greek yogurt cream cheese (this exists and it is DELISH and it is much healthier than regular cream cheese) and about an ounce of cheddar. This one tastes exactly like beef stroganoff. I actually had some of this earlier today! As a meal, I make 3 turkey meatballs, 2 tbs of greek yogurt cream cheese, and 1 ounce of extra sharp cheddar. I eat it in two or three sittings, and it comes to 330 calories, 6 grams of carbs, and 29 grams of Protein. Yummy and good for you. It'll take you time to get used to eating a much more limited diet than most of us ate before surgery, but then you'll learn how to make new combos of healthy foods that taste good, leave you feeling full and satisfied for many hours, and give you a ton of protein and are healthy. You'll get there, and sooner than you think. Hang in there.

    When will my energy return?

I had that feeling in my upper chest/sternum area too early on post op. I used to say it felt like finely ground glass. It got better for me as time went on. Also, my restriction the first two or three months was very small. I did eat food but had to chew very well and take tiny tiny bites. I wasn't able to get all my protein in with just food for several months so I made sure to sip on protein shakes and add protein powder to my yogurt, soups, etc. I was tired for about the first four weeks and needed naps each day. About week five I started feeling more energetic. Try upping your protein and see if that helps- even if you have to drink protein shakes. If you haven't found one you like keep experimenting. It's like this surgery is one big experiment to see what you like and what your body likes. Hang in there!! Good luck

A bit of tough love here....are pancakes and spaghetti os on your approved list? Mashed potatoes? This is just my opinion but the choices you are making can lead to some problems with cravings. The more carbs you eat, the more you will crave them. eggs, tuna, chicken, turkey, yogurt, cottage cheese - items high in Protein will keep you more satisfied for longer periods of time while those carbs are actually the worst thing you can do in this early stage. Also eating processed pre packaged foods like spaghetti os is something my nut told me to stay away from forever. It may be why you are having so many cravings so soon. Half the battle is the head games. How much protein are you currently getting?

    Your Healthy Lunch

I just made some "nachos." So good. I took a Joseph's low carb tortilla (7gm protein) and cut it into wedges and cooked in a skillet c cooking spray on both sides until crispy, then I put them in a baking dish and covered with one ounce shredded cabot light sharp cheese and diced chilis. Broiled until bubbly and then topped with a little salsa and plain fat free greek yogurt. Super good!
  12. Hi - year on 3/16. I'm down from about 300 to 218 lbs. I haven't lost a pound since about Thanksgiving. I had my gall bladder out and was extremely addicted to Pain pills from about Sept 2015 to Jan 2016 when the docs stopped writing scripts. I was drinking a lot of alcohol and just gave up on eating regular food (Protein & veggies) and pretty much just lived on sweets and carbs. Maybe yogurt and milk in my coffee. Pretty pathetic. I'm in recovery now, and trying to really cut out carbs and refined sugar, eat more protein and Fiber (veggies and soluble fiber). I won't even go see my surgeon because I'm embarrassed. I don't exercise but my partner and I will be moving to a different city soon with access to jogging / biking trails right out our new house. Anyway, I hope it's not too late for me. I have not gained back but the "honey moon" phase is over. I can eat more than I used too when it comes to carbs. Oddly, they don't make me full, only when I eat meat is when I'm stuffed. I hate meat lol. But, back on track and getting healthy again. I'm seeing a counselor about my addictions and hope all of us 1 year anniversary gals who kinda just stopped losing short of our goals will persist and succeed! Prayers to you all.
  13. If there's one thing I'm learning is that nothing is "normal" post-sleeve. For the first few weeks I couldn't feel my restriction at all (even though I never tested them) but still stuck with the weighing/measuring my food and all that jazz. Now I'm officially 8 weeks out and can eat a 5oz dannon light & fit Greek yogurt in 20min BUT can't handle more than 2-2.5oz of food (depending on the day). So that's like 1.5oz of Protein, .5oz of black Beans, and .5oz of cheese. And eating that takes me about 30-40 minutes. I feel a restriction now. The "harder" the food the more I feel it. Definitely check with your doctor to make sure you're okay, but if you're following your eating plan/nutritionist's orders, trust the process and you will be just fine.
  14. 306lbs., 09/11/14. 175 lbs., 03/11/16. yea! but, i current exhibit what seems like "morning sickness" all day until i can pass all the gas and clear the bowels. i am having difficulty drinking Water, and the mere sight of any food makes me want to puke. i'm also fatigued, lack much strength, suffer from depression. i found a frozen fruit/veggie bar (strawberry/rhubarb) that i can tolerate, half at a time; or a dollop of yogurt with slice banana/strawberry is of comfort. anyone else have anything like this?

    Alcohol, parties, fun?

I agree with you. My husband and I love going out with friends and having drinks...but now I am 2 weeks post op and he is worried we will lose our fun times together. I look at it as if life is on pause and when we push play again I will just be a modified version of myself. One that is able to get a small plate at buffets and drunk off 2 wines instead of 2 bottles I have always been so jealous of women who would get full after a moderate plate or a girl who could eat a yogurt for lunch lol. I try to picture classic women of Hollywood and how they eat and sip and remember that "hey that's attractive and I wasn't when I could out drink guys" haha that seems to help me! Let me know how you start to feel because I am in the same boat! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  16. Hi all, I had my surgery on 2/8/16 and was losing well and not having any troubles. I went for my one month checkup and had only lost 8 pounds from my previous visit (at one week post op). I started at 344, lost to 325 prior to surgery, and have now been stuck at 297 ish. My surgeon says to only eat when I am hungry. ..not a problem since I don't really feel hungry. I can handle a 5 Oz container of yogurt and a fourth to half a cup of Soups, cottage cheese and refried Beans. I was finally able to eat a scrambled egg two days ago. I do low impact aerobics and walk. I plan to start Water aerobics and swimming next week now that I am cleared to. What am I doing wrong??? Sent from my SM-P900 using the BariatricPal App

    What do you eat?

I don't count calories, just Protein. I usually get about 70-80 grams of protein each day. A typical day for me might look like: - 5 oz Greek yogurt with 1/4 cup granola -1/2 apple with Peanut Butter -a few slices of deli turkey with a slice of cheese -protein shake -hash (ground turkey, onion, sweet potato, apple and spinach all mixed together. I double the ground turkey to get more protein in.) I exercise about six days a week. I do BodyPump twice a week, BodyStep once or twice a week (depends on my schedule), and walk 2-4 miles two to four times a week. I'm down a little more than 70 pounds since September. My weight loss has slowed down some from the early months, but it's steady.

    What do you eat?

I eat about 800 to 1200 calories a day. I run 4 to 5 miles on 3 mornings a week, walk 3 to 4 miles on 3 mornings a week, do zumba for 1 hour on one night a week, and do body pump for an hour 2 nights a week. My go to foods are zoodles with homemade turkey meatballs, greek yogurt, Cracker Barrel 2% cheese sticks (only 60 calories), sliced turkey, shredded chicken that I made in a crockpot, the individual size frozen veggie steamers. I typically do not do Protein shakes or bars. The bars have way too many calories for my liking. The shakes do not really give me that "satisfied" feeling. I love tuna, but limit it due to mercury concerns. I eat chicken about a 100 different ways. I do eggs once a week. I also like sugar free oatmeal.

    Yogurt recommendations please

I like the Dannon Light and Fit Greek yogurts! Also, cottage cheese is really good with mashed peaches and a little sugar free peach syrup! I'm not a big cottage cheese girl but, I am able to eat it that way and benefit from it's high protein. If you get premade protein shakes, I found blending them with Ice made them easier to digest the first few weeks! But the Dannon Greek L&F yogurts are yummy! No big chunks of fruit and great flavors and low sugars for a yogurt!

    What do you eat?

Below is a "typical" day's menu: As for carbs, mostly I get them from my shakes, Greek yogurt, and the very limited veggies I'm able to fit in after my Protein. Other doctors and nutritionists give you carb targets, but my doctor just says to limit them as much as possible. If you're not logging your food yet, I'd suggest using http://www.myfitnesspal.com/. It helps you keep track of your protein and fluids, but also can help you figure out if anything is going off track and affecting your weight loss. Okay, here's an example of my day: I keep a 3-quart jug and a 24-oz Tervis tumbler (with a handle) both at home and at work. I fill the jug with Water and a 2-quart packet of Crystal Light ice tea, because full strength is too sweet. I count my morning Protein shake as a meal, not a Fluid. (30 grams of protein) 30-60 minutes later, I have a cup or two of coffee. (Count it as a fluid if you like.) After that, I drink a 24-oz. tumbler of sugar-free iced tea throughout the morning. (Lots of frequent sips) Then I walk for 35+ minutes. Then it's lunchtime - tuna salad or chicken salad, or leftover protein from dinner. (16-22 grams of protein) and maybe a bite of veggies if there's room. About 45 minutes after lunch, I'll fill another 24-oz tumbler of iced tea and sip that throughout the afternoon, finishing by 30 minutes before my afternoon snack. At around 4:00 or 4:30, my afternoon snack is usually a Greek yogurt (12 grams of protein) or some leftovers. (This is also a good time to get in some veggies or a V-8 if you're getting enough protein at other times.) Maybe a cup of hot tea in the later afternoon. (Count it as a fluid you like.) Then dinner – again, getting 20-25 grams of protein from lean steak, fish, chicken, or pork, and maybe a bite or two of veggies. Finally, another 24-oz cup of iced tea or water 30-45 minutes after dinner that I sip throughout the evening. If I'm hungry later, sugar-free Jello or sugar-free popsicles are good. And if I'm short on protein or still hungry, another yogurt or protein shake. (I'm not worried about the calories because this menu only provides 700-900 per day.) So that's 70+ grams of protein and 72-120 ounces of fluid, with some exercise as well. If you have a regular enough schedule, you can follow it every day. If not, maybe a modified version will work. The big trick is in pre-planning your meals and your fluids, especially if you're going to be away from home or work. In those cases, I always make sure there will be something I can eat, or I bring along a Protein shake or some kind of meat to carry me through. I've also gotten pretty good at restaurant eating. I avoid the bread and salad, order chicken, steak, lamb, fish, or pork, trade-in the starch for a second veggie, skip the dessert.... and end up taking half of the meat, and almost all of the veggies home. Hope that helps! Rog
  21. Most yogurt was too think for me as well. I finally settled on Yoplait Greek Whips - 100 calories and around 9 grams of Protein. They are so light and fluffy! What do you eat?

I had my sleeve in early sept 2015. My starting weight was over 400. I am currently at 259. I try to stick to a high Protein diet but i eat anything. I don't shy away from carbs or sugar. I even have a stash of easter candy that i dip into every day. Last night i had two stufed Pasta shells with some sausage for dinner. Turkey cold cuts, cheese and crackers for lunch, and yogurt mixed with some Cereal for Breakfast. As a snack i had a reeses Peanut Butter egg
  25. This is also what my NUT said was best for protein/sugar, etc for after surgery. I haven't tried it yet because I'm not a huge fan of yogurt, but I plan on getting some for my pureed phase. Adding a little Protein shake to thin it out sounds like a good idea! Only problem I have with the Oikos triple zero Greek yogurt is that is does have a few more grams of protein that the Light and Fit Greek yogurt, but the sugar content is higher and so are the carbs. For those extra 2-3 grams of protein I'd rather do much lower carb. Just me though. I'm used to looking at carbs rather than anything else because I'm diabetic. You may differ because of not having other health issues.
