    Considering Surgery

Ask if your local bariatric surgeon has an information seminar. Your surgeon may recommend a procedure. Here is a link that may help in your research phase. https://www.obesitycoverage.com/the-complete-patients-guide-to-bariatric-surgery/ Age 45 and 254 pounds, My wake-up call was being admitted to ICU. My internal organs shutting down from diabetic ketoacidosis. My heart stopped, and they brought me back. I wish it didn’t take that moment to understand my weight was slowly killing me. I looked at how many times I’ve lost weight then had regain with extra. I needed a long-term solution to get my health back. I was sleeved in 2014. Five years out, no complications, no regret, and maintaining in the 130’s.

    Considering Surgery

About 6 years ago I lost 100 lbs w/out surgery after being diagnosed with fatty liver (my insurance at the time wouldn’t cover wls). Of course most of that weight gradually came back. A new career meant new insurance, and this time WLS was covered. I started consults the week my insurance became effective.
  3. hi all! i'm new here as a registered user but i've been reading everyone's posts here for about a month now. i haven't been banded yet - actually i haven't even discussed it with my doctor. the idea of having the surgery is this really weird mix of emotions for me. i know it's a life-long journey and a tool to help me lose weight..but i've been morbidly obese for years now (and i'm three months shy of my 20th birthday)..so the idea of change is very scary. i want to be thin and healthy but i'm terrified of the process. however, i know that i won't ever do it on my own. i'll have to do something as drastic as surgery or i won't stick to it. i think it's more that i'm afraid to admit that i NEED the surgery...that i've actually let myself go that much. the idea of going to an amusement park and riding the rides, flying on a plane without having to ask for an extension, going to the beach without feeling completely self-conscious, or just going out to dinner without having people stare at me is something that i would love to have! so i guess what i'd like to know is: at what point do i stop researching and decide i actually know enough about it? also, even though i've done a ton of research i do still have some questions like how long did it take from the time you first discussed it with your doctor for you to be approved and scheduled for surgery? does it take months or is it a matter of a couple of weeks? days? sorry for the long post! any help is appreciated. also...has anyone here had the surgery in north carolina? thanks! brittany

    Pre-Op Diet

I was on 3 shakes a day for a total of 600 calories a day during my 14 day pre-op shake phase. Prior to that I had to have a six month - monthly weigh ins before the doctor got approval from my insurance company. my doctor had me on 800-1000 calories a day (I always stayed under 900 calories, 80 grams of Protein and 45-75 carbs (I tried to stay under 50) carbs and I lost weight each month persistently even though I had fun days. 1200-1500 calories a day seems very high to me for a pre-op phase. It seems like a good amount of calories for maintenance phase especially if you are exercising. One thing though, everyone picked their surgeon for a reason and I think listening to your surgeon's advice, but did your surgeon set you up with a nutritionist first? My suggestion, which cannot hurt you and will give you the results you want would be: Drink 64 ounces of Water a day - Walk as much as you can and the most important thing is to avoid as many carbs as you can. Keep carbs under 6-7 grams of per serving and as high a protein as possible. Why not try TWO Protein Shakes a day, sugar-free popsicles & sugar-free Jello as Snacks and eat a sensible dinner - "protein - plus vegetable". The shakes & vegetable and sf stuff will give you the amount of carbs you need for energy and the least carbs you have the better your liver will be for surgery. Best of luck. Sorry I had to edit this I hit send too fast.

    2 Year Hunger Pangs

You're doing everything absolutely right and you have the weight loss and the numbers in your log to prove it! Great job!! I doubt that there is one of us on this forum that doesn't understand your fear. I try to examine my fears by answering the question is it rational or irrational. If it's rational, I try to do something about it. If it's irrational, I make a conscious choice to recognize that I have no objective basis to justify it. That doesn't mean that it instantly goes away. But continually reminding myself over time that it has no basis usually alleviates the fear. I think there is great value in keeping it as simple as possible. The laws of science and the universe cannot be denied. As long as you are meeting your calorie goal average on a consistent basis, it is not possible to gain weight. That does not mean that you won't occasionally exceed your daily calorie goal. Life is meant to be fun and enjoying a special meal on a special occasion is part of enjoying your life. When that happens, I simply make a mental note to reduce my daily calorie goal by 100-200 calories for a day or two and I'm right back on track with my average. You'll see the results in your log. And on the scale. Just as you have been all along on your journey. You're managing your weight instead of your weight managing you. You are in control. And that's a great feeling. Persistence, along with absolute belief, can never be defeated.

    need support buddy in ct

I'm in Manchester. Yes, I know a couple people that had Dr. Papasavas and I've heard really good things about him (about both of them actually). Do you go to the support meetings at Hartford Hospital? I've gone to a couple of them so far and thought they were pretty good. I think there's one next week (maybe Tuesday night). You've done really well over the last 13 months! 150 lbs is AWESOME!! I have heard that the weight comes off easier in the first year and then starts to slow down. What are you doing for exercise? I have been walking but just recently started biking. There's a group called Healthy Gears that rides some of the bike trails in CT. I went this past weekend for the first time and rode with them in Farmington and went 6 miles! I think I'm going to try to keep that up, I'm more likely to stick with it if it's a group thing.
  10. I was denied once because I wasn't at least 100 lbs over weight for 3 consecutive years... I was finally approved in Feb and had my surgery March 26.... Doing great, just not losing the weight as fast as i will like to.

    What a relief...

Welcome and thanks for sharing. Your story is touching and I can relate. I too was "skinny" and tall "for my age" as a kid. I laughed when you said you were called "string bean" so was I. I too was an emotional eater...whatever the emotion. Sadly I packed on the food and the weight started at around age 13...I was then considered overweight not obese but that changed later on in my life. I don't know how you came to the decision to choose the sleeve but for me and in general I think it is the best surgery out there. I wish you all the best in your WL journey.
  12. I cannot and have never felt my band. I can feel my port, more noticeably with my weight loss, but it does not hurt. It just feels like a bump or knot under the skin. I did try to push a grocery cart in with my belly the other day and wow, that hurt, but only for a moment.

    I'm so stressed out tonight

Liz, Will you be a self-pay or insured pay? That would be one of the determing factors. Also, what is your height and weight because it sounds like your fine?

    my fittness pal

I might be alone in this, but I think that tracking my food in MyFitnessPal is JUST as vital in my weight loss as my surgery was, if not more. You can add me at HolyPeas if you feel like it. I do not fill out my diary quite as often as I used to because I tend to be an automated eater (eat the same things or very similar things most days of the week) but especially if I am doing something different, I LOG.

    Workouts after surgery

That will be Drs question to be on th safe side. In my case I was told: do not lift anything heavier than 20lbs for 2 months. 2 months (time it takes sleeve to fully heal /s seal). After 2 months I started with low intensity cardio. By the 3rd month I started doing weight training. Again check with your doctor first. Good luck

    6 month diet......before surgery.....

I'm currently in the 6-month diet phase as well. My bariatric doc wants me to lose 20lbs before surgery so i decided toput the two requirements together. I have to say, I'm worried I won't lose enough by the end of the 6mo. I've lost more than 20 in the past (& gained it back) but this feels like my whole life depends on it! I'm determined to do it though. Good luck to you & ill be looking out for your updates!

    Strange Kidney Soreness

I am thinking the same thing as the other poster....sounds like you might have some kidney stones. I know our gallbladders are more susceptible to stones because of the incredably low calorie intake...I wonder if we are more susceptible to kidney stones because of weight loss, or the high protein diet? Another possibility...have you been taking a lot of Tylenol lately? Either way you should definitely go get it checked out by the doc. good luck!
  19. Tomorrow I start my 10 day liquid diet. I'm prepared have my Jello setting in the fridge, Protein shakes ready and veggies and fruit proportioned out. Surgery on 9/11, and I can't wait. I'm anxious to finally see what people have always said. ” if I lost weight id be gorgeous”. Bring it on, I'm ready to be all that I can
  20. I was banded 12-08-10 and was doown about 10 lbs. from my surgery day weight... Well, today, for some reason, I am back to my pre-surgery weight and I am totally DISGUSTED and want to give up. This all happened while religiously watching the calories and protein and I just got done with my period... Any help out there???

    Weight Loss Has Stopped

Only another .3lbs again this morning! Not happy but it's better than a gain
  22. So, your starting weight is 195 lbs? May I ask how tall you are? I guess I would ask what you want to get out of surgery, both weight wise, short/long term complication wise, and price wise. The band is the easiest upfront and usually the cheapest, with no cutting, however it requires long term maintenance. The sleeve or gastric bypass (which can be covered by insurance) is more drastic but you lose more weight and when it heals there's generally no upkeep or return visits. It also costs up to 10K more upfront than the band, but that's balanced out usually over time by not having to worry about fills/unfills. Edit: And regarding liposuction, I wouldn't really look at that unless there's one part of your body that consistently bothers you, and nothing else (for instance, that stubborn love handle on your stomach ever since you've had a child, etc.). Otherwise, it just seems kind of like mopping only one area on a large kitchen floor.
  23. Whole I do t know everything ... Hahha ... I don't believe liposuction is a weight loss tool. More of a procedure to target certain areas of fat that are resistant to dieting and exercise.

    Depression

@pink dahlia -- I like your post. Sometimes people who haven't experienced depression don't understand it's a chemical imbalance and sometimes we just don't have control of it without medications. Diet and exercise might help alleviate symptoms but many times that's not NEARLY enough. My ex-husband used to say "I don't know what you're sad about..." Like you said, if there were a proverbial switch I could flip and be happy, don't you think I would have done it by now??? Turns out he was one thing in my life that made me very unhappy in addition to the depression. Once I got out of an unhappy situation, I certainly feel better but I still have depression. I can just manage it so much better. One of my standard lines back to him was "There's no pill that's gonna make me happy to be with you!" See why we're divorced? lol While I expect weight loss to help me feel happier, I don't anticipate it will cure my depression as I've had it since I was a teenager and I only became obese after the birth of my second son twenty years ago.

    Depression

Hi there, hope you're doing well. I don't know what to tell you about your long time of depression. Mine came on in my mid 30's after a a very sad , difficult personal issue. Im usually a very upbeat, outgoing happy person, but depression kicked. my. rear ! Its horrible to be sad, depressed and angry 24/7, add the slowing down metabolism and weight gain, and sleep problems! Well as you know, its NOT pretty... A friend reccommended a product called Plus, from Mannatech. (google Mannatech for more info) I started pounding down Plus 4 pills , 3x a day. 12 days later it was like someone lifted a layer of sadness off of me ! I got better and better, stayed on it = depression gone. Both my husband and I take several Mannatech products daily, what a difference ! ( He' s diabetic, no weight probs). (I am NOT a Dr. so discuss with your Dr before taking taking anything ) Hope this helps, I wish you well ! Keep us posted !
