I was sleeved on 26/5. It has been a very smooth process. I actually feel really great and energetic which is strange as I thought I'd feel the opposite. I've noticed a lot of you have moved on to puréed or soft food after 10 days. I'm under the impressive it was 14? Also when did everyone start exercising after sleeve? I mean weight training and cardio, not walking Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I just walked the butte with a friend. Little or no exercise for the past couple of months, but.... A mile up and down with 500 feet of elevation gain, it was still 88 degrees out at 9:45. I think I'm going to be sore tomorrow.

Hey everyone!!! So I'm planning to have the RNY...hopefully sooner than later! Just started the process though in July and see the surgeon next week. (I've already seen the np) Ive also done blood work and NUT visit....I've gotten all my specialties doctors to write letters of support and I'm psyched!!! What an amazing app with stories of good, bad and everything in between!! Love it! Do we have any type 1 diabetic success stories? I've had diabetes for 21 years now (was dx at age 11) my bmi is 36 and I have a ton of other issues however, what was your diabetes like post RNY? I know I'll never go into remission but just curious the effect on type ones? My doctors seem to think I'll gain better control....however, on the insulin pump I've had for 4 months has dropped my a1c from 9.3- 6.7!! It has made me gain 25 lbs though! Yikes! Well, I am still pre-op and started with my ***'s program at 300lbs. I have lost 22 lbs so far on my own, and MY goal for myself would be 165. That would put my total weight loss at 135 pounds. My doctor origionally wanted my goal to be 135. I laughed. I probably weighed that in 5th grade. But frankly, at this point, I look at it by each meal, each half pound lost, each day being closer to surgery and closer to my goal. Briar Rose

No, Laura. My MD is average weight, but he's of oriental extraction and I'm sure has never had a weight problem in his life. @@ He always had this disappointed look on his face when he saw my weight. I can't wait until I'm at goal and go in for my checkup, just to watch him eat his words! -

Newbie here! September surgery date.
CallejaFairey posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hello! So obviously, I'm new here. I just wanted to say hello, and add my 2 cents. I'm 5'8, and my current weight is 360lb. I can't say for sure that this is my highest weight, as I'm pretty sure I've lost some weight since January, but I never weighed my self, so I can't be sure. I guess it really doesn't matter though, 360lb is high enough, don'cha think! Lol. I've been fat (said not as derogatory, but as a factual statement), almost my whole life. I had the few years pre-puberty as skinny, but once 11 or 12 hit, that was over. I am lucky enough to have gained confidence in my self in my early 20's. Loving myself, body and all. So I never tried all the questionable fad diets and gimmicks that are out there. However, I was aware that a lower weight would be healthier in the long run. Obesity runs in my family, and my Nanie (my Mom's Mom) died from complications due to being obese. I knew I didn't want to end up in the same situation as I got older, so I did try calorie counting and exercise. While it was semi successful, I just wasn't able to lose much, nor keep it off. I knew I needed something more powerful, and lasting, for me to make weight loss work. So I've always been interested in bariatric surgery. Due to many circumstances, surgery through health care (Canadian here), was just not an option, and money for pay myself surgery, was just as unlikely. However, after a few family members went through they're own surgery, seeing how helpful surgery really was for weight loss in individuals who haven't been able to do it on their own, some of my family decided that they wanted me to have this chance, and put things in motion for me to be able to do this. Fast forward to now, a few months later, I have a surgery date of September 5, going to a surgeon in Mexico, the same one that one of my family members went to. She is confident enough in her experience to have set me up with them. In fact, she'll be traveling with me, to help me out. I'm excited for this journey, and a little nervous, I've never had surgery before, but I know this will be good for me. While I've been lucky enough to have remained relatively healthy, with only sleep apnea as an issue I have, I know that won't last as I get older if I don't do something now. So that's my story so far. I'm loving being able to read everyone's story on here, and hope to add more to this great community! -
What do you eat?
Oak Park Lorena replied to northstar9148's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I used Medifast for breakfast, lunch and a snack and then 4 oz lean protien and a veggie for dinner for my pre-op diet. Medifast is low fat, low carb, high Protein and been around for decades for weight loss. It actually does not taste terrible. I actually like the pudding and the teas, the shakes are kind of the usual Protein shake experience. I did Medifast for weight loss in the late 80s (yes, I am so old!) it's not a great solution for long term because you gain the weight back rapidly once you start eating food again, but it works well I think for the pre-op diet. Remember, the surgeon wants you on the pre-op diet to shrink your liver, not necessarily to lose weight, so find something you can stick to! -
As of Today I've lost 100LBS since RNY May 12th
mtwtvl71 posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Today is a great day! Today I hit the 100lbs mark. I had my RNY on May 12th and as of my weight in today I've lost 100LBS. That is just over 3 months time. I'm doing great and eating healthy every day. I'm at around 700 calories per day and walk 2 miles every morning 5 days a week. I've just started to tone and lift light weights at the gym. I feel great and can't believe that i fit into an x-large shirt now..I was 3/4XL before. THis is the best decision I've made and have 0 regrets. I feel great and have so much more energy. -
Two things about weighing yourself
isit5yet replied to nurse535's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I weigh daily and find comfort and control in seeing it every morning. I also agree that it gives me insight in how my body changes water-wise throughout my cycle. I do not count lbs lost until I get two consecutive days at that weight, then I consider it my new weight. -
Two things about weighing yourself
mauraclegg replied to nurse535's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I weigh daily and if there is a pound more than I expect I no longer freak. If I weigh any time other than when I first wake-up it's about 2-3 lbs different; also when I go to the doc it's about 2-3 lbs higher than home. I count my losses and only worry about a gain of more than 3 lbs. -
I had 1cc removed when that happened to me the first time. I hate that for you, it's been a year and I haven't been able to get back to green since, so I've basically gained all of my weight back.

Gastric Sleeve After Lapband
IowaAndy replied to ChaChaBurch's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I also had a lapband before I was sleeved. I did not have any slipage either but I was constantly vomiting after the food would get stuck and I was tired of the constant doctor visit to have my band check and water added or removed. I had my sleeve removed by Dr F Garcia in Tijuana after my insurance carrier, BCBS refused to pay for the band removal or the sleeve procedure. I have never been so happy as I am now having the band removed and the sleeve done. I had my surgery on Dec 11, 2011 and the band and sleeve were all done in one procedure laproscopically. I have not have any problems since my surgery and am losing weight and on my way to the goal. I wish you all the best on your surgery. I am sure that you will do fine and you will be amazed on how much you like the sleeve vs the band. -

Jaime I have a type of Medicare UPMC for you. So 6 months of classes is mandatory too! So we have almost the same type of height and weight. After I meet with the surgeon I'll update if I have to loose any weight pre op but even if it's not mandatory I still might with the pre op diet. And good luck to you! New here but old bandster

Thanks so much. I definitely have to do something to get this weight off my joints. It is scary with the risks but i think it will be worth it. Thanks fir taking the time to reply -
Hi everyone. I am new here and wanted to introduce myself and tell my story. I have had such a journey. I feel I could write a book at this point. Basically im an old bandster since Feb. 2003. Banded by Dr. Horgan in Chicago. Anyways I lost 60 pounds then plataued for years then decided to exercise seriously lost another 50. I was still hungry but it did keep me from overeating and eating late at night because i developed reflux all night if i ate past 8pm. Gained some back exercised more again went back down. Anyways I was always dine because i could exercise. Well over a year ago i was diagnosed with lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, anemia and low thyroid. So now exercise is pretty much impossible. I feel trapped. Its a bit depressing and im never depressed ever. I started at 315 got down to 190 now im back i think about 280. Im scared to even weigh myself. This weight is making life even harder. So i found a hospital nearby that seems to have a good bariatric program. Im not sure if i will even qualify with lupus and anemia. I will be attending this saturday their seminar. The thought of going through approval for another surgery is exhausting. I had to fight a denial with my band since it was so new at the time. But I feel like I have to try at least. Im not sure which would be best for me. I have a bad sweet habit now that I didnt have before the band. But as all us bandsters know chocolate goes down so easy. If anyone has lupus or is looking to switch from the band I would love to talk. Thanks for listening to my story.

Hi, all! I have been lurking for a few months now but this is my first thread. I need advice and love from people that are going through or have gone through the same struggle. But first, let me back up... I am 24 years old and have been struggling with weight issues/various eating disorder issues since I was 13. My highest weight was around 275. On the day of my surgery (December 22nd) I was 263. I woke up from surgery in tons of pain. I was prescribed Tardil (?) but that was not cutting it. They ended up putting me on Dulaudid which did the trick. I did lots of walking but ultimately felt very, very sore. I felt Constantly extremely thirsty and bloated at the same time... And I could not wait to get off my saline drip which was making me get up to pee every 2-3 hours at night. I had to stay an additional night in the hospital because my oxygen levels would dip into the upper 80s when I slept unless I was wearing oxygen in my nose. They ended up sending me home on Christmas and said that the problem would fix itself when the swelling went down. During the hospital stay, I was drinking my about 40ish ounces of Water but they kept me on Clear liquids so I was not getting any Protein. Yesterday, since I was home for half the day, I got in my water and about 10-12 grams of protein. Today, I am on track to meet my water requirement and was able to get in 30 grams of protein. I expect to be hitting my liquid and protein goals tomorrow although I can already tell that it will be a struggle and a constant effort until I can add some regular food into the mix! Now to my concerns- since the surgery my temperature has been variable. For instance, it has ranged from 97.8-100.5 but it is spending more time in the 99-100 range than I would like it to. My doctor suggested I only needed to reach out at 101 and above... Did you find you ran "hotter" for awhile after the surgery? Speaking of, I am constantly having hot flashes. I am waking up about 1-3 times during the night in heavy sweat despite the fact that my room is about 62 degrees cool. Is that normal? Are hot flashes likely to go away? I did switch from Dulaudid to Norco today and am hoping that will make a difference. My surgery was laronscopic. I took my first shower today and changed out my bandages. I have 20!!! Black Stitches in 7 different places along my abdomen. I did not realize in the hospital (because of my big boobs and the lack of mirrors) that there were that many. Is that normal?? When do the stitches normally come out? Also, when can I expect the pain and swelling to decrease considerably? The pain has definitely gotten better each day but the swelling has not made significant progress that I can tell. Which probably explains why I have only lost 2 lbs so far. Finally, when should I break down and take some milk of magnesium? I started on dulcolax today and feel lots of gas (mostly burping, though) but I have yet to have a bowel movement. On the other hand, I am finding it so hard to bend over and wipe well because of the stitches so I don't want to push it too soon while I am still struggling with that. Thoughts on making this process easier? Also, I HATE protein flavoring. I can stand Premier shakes but 2 of them takes me the whole day to drink and they are already getting really old REALLY fast. I was thinking about a low cal/SF cream of mushroom or chicken Soup with 10-15 gr of unflavored protein but I am unsure if I will like the texture and I don't know what brand is best. I was thinking of doing the same with Jello, as well. Any other ideas? Thanks for allowing me to vent!

My insurance is BCBS of Michigan MESSA. I am a little worried about providing a weight loss records from doctors. I haven't gone to a doctor about a my weight loss because they said that even though I was overweight I was still basically healthy and in good shape. What will they do if I don't have a doctors record? What else do they usually ask for? I am going through a doctor who has his own insurance specialist team and can usually get it approved; however, I"m going to be WAY bummed if I can't get the procedure done for another year. I"m not sure I can live like this for that long!

@ yes! I added you as a friend. I finally figured out how to add friends lol. It would be nice to have someone at the same stage to go thru this with. I'm trying to convince my sister to do this with me too. I have seen about 98% of sleevers say their only regret is not having gotten the surgery sooner, that is why I keep trying to convince my sister lol. I am going to ask my friend if she kept all her appointments and such. She mentioned something about having to do weight watchers so the insurance had a documented weight loss effort. Maybe that's why it took longer for her. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I had my physical this morning with my new doctor at Kaiser and we discussed my lab results as well as bariatric surgery. My BMI is 41.5 and I am pre-diabetic. She put in a request to have the nurse call me, and she did call me about an hour later and scheduled me for my options orientation meeting for August 11th. If I "agree" to having the surgery, then I will have to fill out paperwork that night and they will schedule me for the Options classes which start sometime in September. My doctor did say that this is in no way a guarantee that I will be approved for bariatric surgery, but to make sure I do everything they ask of me during the process because that makes it easier for me to have Kaiser approve my request. I'm excited to say the least to get this process started. My all time heaviest weight was 240, and sadly I've now surpassed that by 2lbs. I can't wait to get started with the classes! This came up at a good time. I feel that everyone comes here for opinions and want the good and the bad. If the opinion you give hurts the person then that's going to far but if it's and opinion where you say "this is what I would do" or "I feel this is correct" then your not offending anyone. Weight issues are all an emotional problem and everyone just needs to step back and take a breath sometimes.
