  1. I was expected to lose 5% of my weight before surgery, but the doctor said if I lost more than that it wouldn't have any bearing on my ability to get the surgery.
  2. Its so funny that you are asking this questions today, cause I was thinking the same thing! I see all these people on here talking about losing weight before surgery and I was wondering if everyone was told to do this or what? My doctor never said anything about losing weight before. I also want to kinow the same thing about insurance cause if I lose anything I will be below the 40 bmi.
  3. You are eating like a normal person. That is why you weigh 140 now. "Normal" people don't overeat and they aren't obese. If you are too tight and you know it, then do get another unfill. Don't keep trying to NOT eat very much, so that you crave food. If I ever got totally unfilled, which I did in May due to acid reflux issues, I am still the same person that I was when I was morbidly obese. I had to really control myself with food during that unfilled time. I am still a foodaholic and would gain every pound back if I did not have my band. Why go through with all the hard work to lose the weight and then gain some back? Once you lose a pound, it is definitely NOT worth losing again!!! Good luck!!!
  4. Dont muck around with it too much but if you're not even enjoying what you eat, I doubt you need to be that tight. I had a small fill back in Feb thinking I would shoot for 65kg. What happened is it just made me really tight, and I stopped enjoying my food, was barely eating, my running suffered and it started to become really inconvenient to try to eat out with a band. At 68 to 70kg I have a BMI of around 22, I look fine (if not supermodel perfect), I'm fit and healthy, WHAT was I thinking? Why try to lose even more. I realised I was being silly and had a bit taken out. I have .1 less in now than when I had the tiny fill in the first place. It took a week, but my appetite and capacity definitely increased. I had fallen prey to eating easy foods with my tighter band and for a week or two, I continued to eat those foods only more of them. Whoops, up 2lb. I pulled my socks up and banished those foods and now I'm sitting nicely on around 68 to 70 again. If I manage this for six months, I *might* take a little more out. But the point is not to start eating everything again. You have to be on this plan for the rest of your life, that's how you maintain. But basic enjoyment of what you're eating is not a silly goal, its what you need to stay sane. And never ever ever give up the exercising! That's really important in weight maintenance.

    Liver transplant and lapband

Hey ConB113 my husband just had a transplant may2009 and he is doing so well. Have you talked to you liver doctor yet? (I'm sure you have) I know my husband was on Prednisone and they say it will make you gain weight. Is your liver doctor on you to lose the weight ? I know they told us that it would be very hard on my husband if they had to open him up for anything else. Where did you have your transplant done? My husbad had it done in Houston Tx. at Methodist hospital. Sorry don't mean to focus on your transplant. It just amazes me your liver doctor says it is OK. If you do go on with having the lap-band I do wish you all the luck. I just had the lap-band done on nov. 12th . I know if you can go through the transplant you can go through this!!Good Luck and let me know how you did!!!!!!

    Struggling

I am glad you are feeling better about this. Just remember through any stall (because you will have a few through this process) that no human can survive on the limited calories we are consuming (assuming you are sticking to your plan) and not lose weight. Your body may fight it for a little while but the loss is inevitable.
  7. jumped on the scale this morning and last weeks loss is this weeks gain! Please don't let this be failure looming??

    Did you look pregnant?

I got pregnant around 228 lbs (I'm just under 6 feet), so I still had about 45 lbs to lose. I'm in my 23rd (I think) week and my stomach sticks out farther, but doesn't look pregnant. It just looks like I'm getting fatter, which may well be the case. Who knows. I'm always naked around hubby and he says I'm showing, and this weekend my parents commented I had a "bump" (I was wearing a dress that normally hangs straight down, and now it catches on my pokey out upper stomach). During my first trimester I lost a size and I can still wear that size, no maternity clothes yet, but I don't think I'm too far from needing them. Now my stomach makes that ugly "under clothing bump" that happens when fat girls wear too tight pants, and get sausage belly. It's weird. Like the growing uterus has shifted my fat up or something. I also got an unfill and am eating noticeably more. My only food craving is fresh fruit, but I seem to have developed a very unwanted quantity craving. I constantly think about eating, even when I'm not hungry my mouth just wants to chew something. So far it's happy with broccoli & carrots, we'll hope that holds out. So back to my point, I'm not sure how much of what I've gained is baby vs. eating more, and how much of my "bump" is baby vs. more fat. I felt fetal movement for the first time this weekend, so I suspect that the growing will really commence any day now.
  9. Just curious. If your bmi is NOT 40 Or greater and you don't have hbp, diabetes, heart issues or sleep apnea (so your only problem is weight) will you somehow get approved for the procedure? Any other tips you guys can think of to get approved? I've had 2 vascular surgeries and had my surgeon write that band would eliminate some of the vericose problem but not sure ghi would go for that. Any tips and tricks?

    Chinese Food

I eat Chinese food all the time. I love it, especially the spicy dishes with chicken and nuts. I almost always avoid the rice, noodles, etc. that I used to eat, simply because I want to enjoy my meal, not squirm in discomfort. I usually start with some Soup, eat a few bites of several different main dishes and maybe even have a bit of someone's spring roll, egg roll or dumpling. I think that so long as nothing you're eating is a danger to you because of healing, you should be focusing on eating like a normal person. For me, part of having the sleeve was to shake the diet mentality, to finally get over forbidden foods and the binges I'd have as a consequence of denying myself. My approach was and is to focus on keeping my calories at a certain level, to make sure I got at least 80 grams of Protein a day and to keep those carbs restricted but not ridiculously so. I eat about 1200 calories a day now (it's not easy!), average about 90 grams of protein and usually I have about as many carbs as I do protein. I'm happy, I'm maintaining with no problem and I never, ever feel deprived. This is something I can do FOREVER, which is the point. So, act like a person with no food issues and eat what you like, in moderation. Always keep your eyes peeled for those trigger foods, though. Track it all, whether it's a stick of celery or a chocolate chip cookie and keep within your nutritional goals. You won't be able to avoid losing weight, and you won't have any of the mental baggage that comes with being on a diet. Find that spot for yourself where you continue to lose but also feel happy about what you're eating. We have the sleeve so we can be NORMAL. If we wanted to be on a diet forever, we would have given Weight Watchers or MediFast another shot. ~Cheri
  11. I went thru 4 ivfs so put my body thru a menopausal state 4 times and my body loves to hold onto fat! Before the last ivf, i convinced dh to let me have a smart lipo procedure on my tummy so the meds could work better (they did, I had twins). My hubby mistook the lipo for weight loss and said basically I was still fat and I'm never to have that type of surgery again. My recovery was tough and he was worried (?) anyway, I need help, I want to get the sleeve and get in with life and run after my kids without having a breathing attack. I want to be open about the surgery and my desire for it, but it'll cost 12000 out of pocket. I'm afraid he'll think I'm doing one of my silly weight loss things again. I don't think he'll appreciate the reasons to do it and we'll tell me to diet and exercise. Any advice? Sent from my SM-G860P using the BariatricPal App
  12. How many of you have seen this movie? A friend watched it and told me he thought of me when he saw it. It is a documentary style movie about a work-a-holic businessman who put so much into his career, he put nothing into taking care of himself. He went on a juice diet for couple of months and lost a lot of weight. Well, I tried that approach and lost very little. That was one year ago. Today, I am healthier than one year ago, every bit as big, and am scheduled for surgery Jan 6. I am ready to get healthy. No more brand new diets,no more diet pills, no more gimmicks like juicing. Time to really get this under control.
  13. So, I keep hearing how when we are not losing wt, we are losing inches...I dont understand how we lose inches, when we are not losing weight??....I also dont understand how we dont lose weight when we are not eating calories, it seems to defy everything I know about losing weight...calories in and calories out...Know I hear sugar alchohols can stall weight loss?? How, if we are only eating 800 calories a day...I dont get it....Can someone please clarify this for me if you understand it...thanks so much...
  14. I will try to explain it. Lets start with not losing weight and not enough calories. Many many years ago people had to hunt for their food. They would gather as much as they could before winter because the winter time was lean times. Our bodies learned to hold onto weight during those lean winter times. If they lost weight during those times they would eventually die. So fast forward to today. Our bodies believe when we cut calories we are in lean winter times. So it holds onto the fat and weight with the idea of protecting and saving your life. It does not want you to starve to death. Since we all know we no longer have lean winter times and food is plentiful we have to have patience during our starvation times. When your body more specific your brain realizes we are not starving it starts to lose that weight. Increasing calories will help jump start it. Now on to your second question - how we lose inches and not weight. I don't have a scientific answer for it. However I would bet money that DL does have articles on it. My doc did say that this was the way it works. If I had to guess I would say it had to do with our bodies catching up to what has been happening during the weight loss. Also working out helps to sculpts our bodies. I have been losing and gaining the last five pounds for several months, but everyone keeps saying I am losing weight. I keep telling them no my weight is stable, but I believe that I am still losing inches as my clothes are fitting better and better. I hope that helps a little. Hopefully DL will chime in with articles!
  15. How we lose inches when we are not losing weight - muscle vs. fat. Rapid weight loss is the result of your body metabolizing fat - body measurements are shrinking. High Protein diet promotes the addition of lean muscle - one pound of muscle is considerably smaller (less volume) than one pound of fat. So you can reach a point where the "weight" of the fat being metabolized by the body is equal to the "weight" of the muscle being added by the body = no weight loss. But one pound of muscle has less "volume" than one pound of fat = inches are being lost even though weight is stable. Sugar alcohol - I know that stalls are sometimes attributed to consumption of sugar alcohol. There are some that believe a more likely cause is the higher amount of carbohydrates commonly found in foods that contain sugar alcohol. Here is a link to one of the better articles that I've read on sugar alcohol. It does a good job of explaining what sugar alcohols are and their pros and cons. http://www.ynhh.org/about-us/sugar_alcohol.aspx I'm off to jury duty. You guys have a great day!
  16. Your body goes into"starvation mode". It's daily needs severely drop- akin to the feast or famine days. The inches vs pounds thing is a part of your body converting fat into muscle-(well sort of- fat goes away and muscle grows from amino acids and protein intake. ) Muscles weigh more than fat-and have less bulk than fat. So you lose inches but don't lose weight as your body grows muscle. Does that sort of explain it?
  17. Could be, maybe you don't have the best thermoregulation or something? I'd suggest just wearing warmer clothes to bed and drinking most of your fluids hot. It gets pretty cold where I live and this time of year, I drink almost exclusively tea and hot water. You could also have an underactive thyroid, weight gain and being cold are 2 common symptoms. You can Google the others if you are concerned about that.
  18. Hi all, my wife had a gastric bypass a year and a half ago and she lost a lot of weight to begin with. Then slowly but surely her portion size has increased and she's eating lots and lots of surgery foods and she's snacking. I try and talk to her about it but it ends up in a row and she won't talk about it. Her bowel habits are awful and she has the most terrible wind which I account to her diet but she has excuses that's it's not the food. I was due to have my own gastric bypass in August but when the surgeon opened me up he found a huge mass which thankfully is not cancer but needs to be removed before I can have my bypass. I am waiting for both ops. I am seriously worried for my wife as she's done so well to begin with but now I think she's putting it back on, she won't go to her follow up appointments as they are telling her she should be losing weight and she's not telling them the truth. She eats more than me. I am at my wits end and I don't know what to do.

    Breastfeeding and VSG

I agree - same with pregnancy, i dont think its specific to any surgery, more the effects of very low calories and fast weight loss. Weight loss can, as many of us can attest, cause quite significant hormonal disturbances. Toddlers do weird things like wean themselves suddenly when you're pregnant because your milk suddenly tastes different. My oldest said yuck at 15 months and that was it. This *could* occur with weight loss too. So how does that make you feel? 19 months is a superb effort and the chances are, your milk supply is very well established, your routines in place and your body very adept at lactation. So in all likelihood, other than having to express and discard your milk for a day or two whilst the anaesthetic is in your system, you will have no disruption to your supply as long as you are able to keep your fluids up. You tend to be a drinking machine during lactation. It must be a dilemma, on the one hand, breastfeeding is such a good thing that only you can do for your children, on the other, sooner or later YOUR health and happiness need to come first again. Its not a guarantee anyone can give you but the odds are it'll all work fine. There's certainly people on this board who have done it.

    Hopefully the Weight is OVER!

You are doing fine with the weight loss! Are you eating enough Protein to keep you from being hungry? If not, you will over eat and not lose. I know you are not quite a month out of surgery so you are probably still on mushy stuff and liquids for the most part. Try a protein shake (I drink EAS AdvantEdge carb control that has 17 g of protein and only 110 calories) and that should help. (fish, eggs & chicken are real good sources of protein too) With the band you still have to make a concentrated effort to watch what you eat and exercise. Walking is the best exercise you can do at this point. I was banded 071506 and didn't have my first fill until 012307. I may have waited a little too long but I was still consistently losing until about a month before my fill. Up the protein and start an exercise program if you haven't already. Lap banding is not a cure all, it's simply a tool to help us get from Point A to Point B. Keep up the good work! :clap2: high: 335 lbs pre-op: 317 lbs now: 252 lbs goal: 140 lbs banded Monterrey, Mexico Dr. Garcia www.litenfree.com
  21. I have not hit the 200-lb mark yet, but both my surgeon and I feel pretty confident that I am on my way. I initially planned to go the bypass route but, after consulting with two surgeons, both suggested that the sleeve was the best fit for me. In the end, both are tools to help with weight loss. If you follow the plan, both will help you get where you want to be. Best of luck.
  22. That is awesome! You should be so proud of yourself! So in just under a year you have lost 200 lbs? That's amazing. If you don't mind sharing how much more to do you plan to lose or what is your goal weight? You can pm me if you'd like or you don't have to answer at all I understand that it's very personal for some. Sent from my SM-G900T using the BariatricPal App

    Weight Stall Rant

There's the infamous Week 3 Stall that everybody goes through so you'll hit a wall there and it won't be because of anything you've done. It just happens. But you've lost weight already and you will continue to do so.
  25. Hi There..I have been banded since Sept. 23rd 2008 and have lost a total of 36 pounds as of yesterday. I have lost 20 pounds since surgery and 16 pounds pre-op diet. I am loving my weight loss, and have had my 3rd fill yesterday. I have restriction, but I am still eating out of habit. I am not hungry in-between meals so I have to think about why I am eating when I do eat. Am I hungry or am I bored or is this just the normal time of day that I usually snack on something. When I focus on why I am eating I do really well with staying away from the foods that do no fuel my body. I am probably going to have a few more fills before I get to where I want to be at. I started in a size 22 and am down to a size 18 and some 16's. Snow ski season is going to start up and I am almost 40 pounds lighter than last year and my knees thank me.. :huh2:
