    Mental Anguish over Decision

I'm 52, and I've never had a band, but I did make the decision to have bypass after breaking my leg through the knee joint. I had considered bypass for several years, but it took the ortho doctor telling me that I needed a total knee because my weight caused the fracture repair to fail to get the ball rolling. One thing that he said that really stuck in my head was that for every pound you lose, that is FOUR pounds of pressure off the knee. I'm sure its about the same for the hip. Surgery was 6/10, and I'm down 18 pounds since surgery date, and a total of 29 pounds since 4/26 when I first visited my surgeon. (I was fast tracked because I was self pay) My surgeon does not even do the band anymore because of the number of revisions that she was requested to do in the past few years. I already had bad GERD, so I opted for bypass. I can honestly say this is the best thing I have ever done for myself. I had probably lost and regained the same 29 pounds on WW five or six times over the past 4 years. I'm looking forward to a healthier more active life. At times I think my weight loss should be more, but I am really limited as to walking because of the knee. I know that once I get my knee replacement in October that I will (hopefully) lose quicker. Hope my reply helped. Just consider where you are now, and how much better it could be. I don't think age should be a factor, its quality of life. I work in a doctors office, and I see our older patients who are active and able to do for themselves, even after hip or knee replacemnets, then I see our not so older patients who are barely able to get around after hip or knee replacements because of their weight issues. And I DO NOT want to be a part of the later group.
  2. Hi I am post op week 6 from RNY on June 25 and feel that weight lost has been very slow for me. I feel frustrated and defeated. I am doing and following everything and exercise 30 minutes daily if possible but not weekend. My weight lost has been the following: Start o my journey : 248 lbs After 2 weeks liquid diet: 237 lbs 10 day post op appt: 225 Week 5 post op: 215 My primary care doctor who I seen over the week end told me my weight lost was kind of slow compare to most other weight lost surgery. My bubble was busted and I cry all day. I have my 6 week follow up with my surgeon on Wednesday August 5,2015. I admit that I was hoping to be down to 200 lbs but I don't think this will happen. So I just need someone to help guide me through this and give encouragement. Thanks
  3. JK, The more you read the forums here you will quickly realize everyone's journey is different. Just stick with your Surgeons game plan and the weight will come off. Keep working on getting your liquid, Protein and excersize. What is your diet currently looking like? What type of excercizes are you doing? Please don't hesitate to reach out to me for any advise or encouragement. The battle is not easy but worth it.

    Waiting Game! Nervous

I have been teetering at 40.1 for the last 2.5 months I was told any gain would disqualify me and falling below 40 would disqualify me. Can you call them and ask if you still fall under the insurance acceptance rules for surgery? Mine was strait forward with me, they had a few people disqualify because of slight gains and falling below the minimum BMI. Have a great day! Revision in Mexico

I am in a similar situation. I had VSG done in May 2017. Lost 40 lbs, but have gained 10 back- I’m 208 & 5’4” before surgery I was 240. I would love to be under 150. Looking into mini bypass.

    Having Thoughts and Second Thoughts

Because studies have proven that our bodies fight us tooth and nail to put the weight back on. I can tell you that this small tummy I now have gives me the full feeling I never experienced prior to surgery. It keeps me from overeating if I follow plan and eat the protein first. I will never again be able to eat a whole plate of food from Outback along with 1/2 a blooming onion - just not possible and I am so grateful for that.

    Average Length of Pre-Op Diet?

I only have to do one day of clear liquids. My husband has plan a romantic weekend for us and I imagine I will have a few food funerals. I will then be back to no caffeine, no carbonated drinks, and eating to lose more weight before surgery, which is Sept 5th.
  9. Feeling a bit concerned. I'm taking all my Vitamins that I'm supposed to and have been fine up until I reached my goal weight. I'm struggling badly with energy later on in the day and really craving sweets! Anyone else had this and what did you do?
  10. I asked myself these same questions... but then I remembered all the times I have stuck with a diet program for months and lost 40-60 lbs each time. After a certain amount of time I would get so tired of eating foods that I do not like and start back with the bad eating habits and then gain back all the weight I lost, plus some. I am now one week post op and I'm hoping that I will stick this for life...but if I don't, I am also hoping that my stomach is so small that there will be uncomfortable consequences if I cheat and that will deter me. I realize that I have to eat healthy most of the time but if I eat a slice of pizza occasionally or one cookie, then it's not going to make me gain weight back. I think now with my new stomach it will be easier for me to eat moderately and only occasionally treat myself.

What is the average weightloss at 6 months?

That's a great average and for your start weight good too, some will have an average that is higher, others lower...but it does depend on many things...start weight, age, gender, exercise, height and of course calories consumed.
  12. My surgeon requested that I not gain more than 5 lbs prior to getting my bypass. I’m still a month out and noticed that I’ve gained 10 lbs since my last appointment. Has anyone else experienced weight gain prior to their surgery date? I have been lenient with my food choices recently since I will be starting the pre-op diet on 4-16...and know my future diet will be very constrictive. I am actually thinking of starting the pre-op diet sooner to counter the weight gain I’ve experienced. I’m curious to know if others have experienced these issues! Thank you in advance for any advice you may have!
  13. Hey everyone! I just joined the site about a month or so after discovering it. I first considered weight loss surgery about 6 years ago. It was put on hold for varying reasons. Last year, I finally decided to move forward, then COVID hit. My first choice was the Lap Band, but after reading personal experiences on this site and others, I changed my mind. Also, my surgeon was willing to do the procedure, but he had made clear it typically was not as successful and had more long term complications (erosion, slippage, etc) than the sleeve or bypass. After scheduling an appointment to further discuss my options and the pros and cons of each type of surgery, I will now be having the gastric bypass procedure. Surgery is scheduled for next week (May 18th). I'm excited and also nervous. I have mild anxiety, but it's controlled without medication and I see my therapist occasionally. For anyone with anxiety, how did you limit nervous or anxious feelings prior to surgery?

    The Frustration

you'll likely hit several stalls along the way. If you're following your plan, then that's what's going on now. Like you did the first time, stick to your plan and stay off the scale for a few days. Your weight loss will start up again.

    Pre Op Diet??

Hi again, I found this & thought some of us might be interested? (here's where I saw it:http://www.bospa.org/Information.aspx?Page=19) Pre-op liver reduction plan Just because you are awaiting a surgical treatment for your morbid obesity, this is not an excuse to sit back and gorge out on as much food as you can! Any weight you can lose through dieting before your surgery is an advantage - it will make the surgery easier and will reduce the risks associated with it. Some surgeons mandate a very restricted diet - one that is low in fat, sugar and carbohydrates - for one week prior to surgery and even if your surgeon doesn't ask you to follow this diet, doing so will increase your chances of your operation being completed laparoscopically because it will shrink your liver down in size. By following a strict diet, your body reduces its glycogen stores (glycogen is a form of sugar stored in the liver and muscles for energy). With each ounce of glycogen, the body stores 3–4 ounces of Water, so when you follow a very strict diet, especially one that is low in starch and sugar, your body loses its glycogen stores and some water. The liver shrinks as it has less glycogen and water in it. This diet is only recommended for one week before surgery and is not to be followed post–operatively. It is quite possible you lose a lot of weight that week, but it will be mainly be water loss. Please ensure you continue to drink throughout the day. Here are some menu suggestions: Breakfast Small bowl of Cereal, or 1 slice of toast with a scraping of low fat spread lunch 1 slice bread or 2 crispbreads Small portion lean meat or fish, or Small portion cheese, or 2 eggs (not fried) Green salad (no dressing) or tomatoes dinner Small portion lean meat or fish, or Small portion low fat cheese, or 2 eggs, or Tofu or Quorn based dish 1 small potato or 2 tablespoonfuls Pasta or rice Vegetables (as many as you like except for root vegetables) Daily 1/3 pint milk for use in drinks and on cereal 2 portions of fruit (e.g. apple, orange, banana, pear) Free water, tea, coffee, low calorie squash or fizzy drinks 1 low fat, low sugar yogurt or fromage frais

Do i have a flipped port?

Hi Brittney, No I wouldn't worry about a flipped port. It is quite normal to have a lumpy feeling and soreness behind the port site at first. I had surgery in Dec. '07 and my port till protrudes a little and is sometimes uncomfortable. I think it is just a price we pay for having the band. Your band is still very new, so give it time to heal inside. You'll be just fine. P.J. Banded 12-28-07 Start Weight: 259 lbs. 6/30/08: 202 lbs.
  17. I am looking into getting the lap band surgery. One of the questions that I forgot to ask at the seminar is this...I was just recently diagnosed with osteoarthritis. I am only 39 years old and my dr blames it on my weight. Has anyone that has had this surgery seen any improvement in their arthritis post surgery? That is really my only health problem (other than being overweight) and as I have a 3 year old, feeling better would be SO wonderful! Thanks in Advance! Tonya
  18. Had an appointment with the NP this morning and I have made it to my pre surgery weight. I even weighed 5 pounds less than my pre surgery goal weight. Went home and got a call to make my appointment to meet the surgeon. My appointment is next Tuesday and I am psyched. Things are moving along. Yahoo
  19. Hi, my band is August 24th and I did not have to lose weight but I was told not to gain any. I am only 202 pounds started at 206 but I do have to go on an Atkins diet 2 weeks before surgery to shrink my liver. I was worried about a liqued diet I heard so many people talk about, so I was very pleased with the Atkins.
  20. I had to lose weight, and that was with a sluggish thyroid, and a problem with water retention. So if I can u can. Just commit yourself to it. Calories for me are 800-1200 a day, and exercise 3x a week.
  21. @Pink nova you are aces - look at you dancin' on the floor (dancing NOT falling) keep up the great weight, while your weight goes DOWN kathy congrats

    weight gain right after surgery

Agreed with Dan - and drink some warm green tea. Tea is both a hydrator and a diuretic (makes ya pee) whereas coffee will just suck Water out of you and it puts your body out of wack. Also, you didn't mention soups or broths, but just be careful with those. They can be loaded with sodium. My body will have 1mg of sodium and make a general announcement that we are now retaining every drop of water...it's aggravating...so I have to drink lots to counteract it. I'm CERTAIN its water weight. However I'd be concerned about the lack of peeing. When I was banded, they were measuring my urine whenever I went. I was the floor champ, with 2200 cc's a pop. You need to flush the water you're retaining so you don't get a bladder/ut infection. They were really concerned about the volume of urine post op for me. But in the end your body knows what to do :crying: The numbers will owe you, sister!!!

  25. Hi All, Unfortunately my primary care physician is not a fan of weight loss surgery. I asked him whether or not he would recommend lap band and his response was that he does not recommend it for any of his patients. So, I am curious if there is anyone on here that has a primary care physician in Montgomery County MD (or even Frederick MD) that has recommended weight loss surgery. Thanks in advance for the help!
