    Soccer practice

From the album: Pre-Lapband-Surgery Scheduled Aug 23, 2012

I played soccer when I was young and kicked some butt. Now the 4 year olds kicked mine. Do I get an A for effort? I ran as much as I could with them and used it as an opportunity to lose weight....

WOW! You look fabulous!!! It's apparent that you have lost a LOT of weight! CONGRATS!!!
  3. Thank you so much for posting. I have the same questions. I know the answers are I can't do it on my own I'm just too embarrassed to admit I need to go to such drastic measures to lose the weight and get to the best me possible.
  4. Hello Everyone, So, I'm halfway through my third week of the preop diet (I was only supposed to do 2 weeks, but insurance is dragging their feet on my authorization, so my surgeon wants me to stay on it), and so far I've lost 13 pounds. Pretty good, huh? But now some strange thoughts are running through my mind. Because I'm doing so well on the preop diet, I've been fooling myself into thinking that if I just continue with what I've been doing, I won't need to have the surgery in the first place. Never mind that I lost 60 pounds with HCG last year and have gained it all back. Never mind that I have ALWAYS gained my weight back (plus more) whenever I've been on a diet. Never mind that I'm a hardcore compulsive overeater that can eat enough for 3 people. Never mind that I can't live on Protein shakes, green veggies, and egg whites forever. I'm still trying to kid myself into thinking that I can "do it on my own." My insurance has paid for all of the preop tests, so besides a few copays, I wouldn't even be losing any money by not having the surgery. I KNOW this makes no sense and I'm being completely unrealistic. I KNOW that I am setting myself up for failure as proven by my past "success" with dieting. I KNOW that the sleeve will have numerous benefits for me, both emotionally and physically. But there's still a little voice in the back of my head saying, "What if?" It's not about being "ready" to have the surgery. I have a great surgeon, have educated myself thoroughly on the procedure, and am comfortable with any risks or complications that I may or may not have. I just hate feeling this way when I know it's just an exercise in futility.

    sooo worried

Guys, remember that the "squeaky wheel" gets the attention. You notice the negative stuff. AND for every negative poster on this or any other forum, there are hundreds of people who never, ever post on any forum on any subject; they are happily living their lives and enjoying the results of their surgeries. Most common problems related to the band (PBing, getting stuck) are operator error. Remember to cut your food into bites about the size of a nickel, take a bite, put your fork down and chew it well, swallow and then pick up your fork and take another bite. While the SOUND of an aggressive fill is good, the REALITY is that a very aggressive fill can likely mean that you will end up too tight and need an unfill. Go with your doctor's plan, make your regular appointments for fills and you'll get to your sweet spot soon enough. There was one poster on this forum who had to have his band removed after just six weeks because he ended up being allergic to something in his band. How often does that happen? Even less than once in a very blue moon. And, I hate to say it, some people got their bands expecting that they were basically buying weight loss. That they wouldn't have to change anything, just merrily go on along the road they were heading down before surgery and the weight would just magically disappear. They are very disappointed in their decisions about getting banded. If you follow your doctor's instructions and accept that you will have to modify your bad behaviors, and regard your band as an awesome tool, you will more than likely do fine.
  7. I saw a pill crusher at Walmart for about $4, that may work. My doctor told me that we have to crush all pills that won't fit through a straw. He said that if you can't crush them, then a lot of medications have liquid forms available. He did warn not to crush extended release medications, instead to have your doctor to change your prescription. Hopefully as you progress with your weight loss you won't have to take as many pills.

    Finally home!

That's just hospital fluids. It's not a real weight gain. I'm glad ur doing better and out of the hospital
  10. First, I am not a believer in BMI's....my only concern is Body Fat, and how much of my weight is comprised of it... And I had a lot of it..very high %, so much so it was clogging up my arteries, which resulted in some very serious cardiac conditions. So yes, I had WLS because I could not control my hunger, cravings and appetite..... Then, I went to the gym between 5-6am 5 days a week and worked out doing cardio, on an empty stomach...the thinking is to burn energy stored away as body fat opposed to what was recently eaten. All I can say, from first hand experience, it worked...my body fat% is as low as a healthy person would venture to go...in the "Athletic" range. So, in spite of what you may read, what has made you 100% successful??? Did you do it without exercising??
  11. My beginning stats are pretty similar to the OP. Although any weight loss is fantastic, yor chart shows substantial amount of slowing as time goes on. Perhaps cutting your carbs by 50% would help.
  12. I have 17 herniated discs, with a three level cervical spine repair last year. My spine was literally collapsing under my excess weight. Although I still have sciatica and need a full lumbar fusion, my orthopedist is expecting considerable relief from my weight loss. To an extent that has been true. For the last four years, I had been getting a spinal epidural every three months. Last October, I got a radio-frequency nerve ablation done, and the relief from that lasted until a couple of weeks ago. I have another one scheduled in July. During the time that I was experiencing relief, I did not need to take the Lyrica that I had been taking at 300 mg a day. As soon as I started back up, I gained almost eight pounds in one week. Also, I have noticed that when I take my Hydrocodone for pain relief, I get constipated and have to take stool softeners. Also, it makes me horribly sick to my stomach. So, right now while I am waiting for my July treatment, I am getting by on Lidocaine Patches. So, my biggest problem is the Lyrica. My bariatrician took me off my blood pressure meds, because she felt that a couple of them contributed to slow post-op weight loss. But my primary put me back on them. I had some good labs last week, so I am hoping at today's appointment that my primary will let me drop the BP meds. If I can drop that three-med cocktail, I will be down all nine pre-op meds and just need supplements.
  13. I'm following this topic with interest as I have hip and back pain from arthritis. I'm currently taking tylenol and excedrin during the day and tramadol at night for pain relief. Trying to hold on until I've lost enough weight to make a difference in my hip.

    Sleep study ?

I had a split study done in october, the tech told me if the sensors indicated severe apnea-they would use cpap on me. They didn't end up having to. My results showed I have mild sleep apnea but my doctor wants to see if weight loss helps it before talking about needing a cpap.

    Am I going crazy?

I take Zoloft for clinical depression and anxiety. I took it for years before surgery and am still taking it. I also take birth control pills(yes even at 50) or I will have trouble with cysts. I have lost weight maybe slower than others but I am 50. if you do not mind what antidepressant are you on? Some can cause weight gain. I gained 40 lbs. on Paxil over a 4 month period. It takes at least a month up to 6 weeks for them to kick in and you really feel a difference. You might also consider this. if you are an emotional eater and food was your friend and now it is not there to comfort you . . . it can make you feel crazy, looking for something to make you feel like you do when you can eat for comfort. I do not know you so you may not be an emotional eater but if you are that might be your problem and if you are stressed and depressed it is a tough road to go down without food. If you think that is you go see a therapist and learn some coping skills. That is what I have to rely on. Cheri

    Am I going crazy?

ive only lost 10lbs since surgery(about 3 weeks ago). so that upsets me. im on meds also. depakote and pristiq. im bi-polar so i DEFINITELY know what you mean about roller coaster and it affecting your life. i dont have much advice for the weight loss cause im still trying to figure my own out. but with the moods. try and keep a mood diary with you, like what days you felt what. i had to do that for awhile. its annoying but it helped. take it to your doctor and see what they say. also i cant take birth control because it makes me go insane (more then i already am) haha. sorry im not too good with advice. good luck though! im here if you need to vent.
  17. Yes on the smaller fork, spoon, scale all yes. But don't forget to put down the fork. I downloaded an app for my I phone call eat slow pro. It makes you wait 1 minute between bites. I started doing this and I always can tell when I get full. It was the key to my weight loss success. I will be 5 months out on the 24th of December and I have lost 86 pounds. Believe me all they said is true but try this app also. Remember to turn off the TV and sit at the table and eat also. Good Luck.

    One Week from today!

Keep up the good work! I enjoyed hearing what you have been drinking, I start on the 29th and have my big day July 13th, I am retired so I can let the gas escape somewhat, hope its not painful and the time goes fast.Good luck to you hope the weight just falls off!! right?
  19. I was not given numbers except for protein and water. However, The plan is basically to get protein first, then veggies, legumes, seeds/nuts, then a little fruit. No sugar. There really is no room left for starches. You should be full well before the thought of carbs. I still eat very little carbs from grain. I am saving them for maintenance, which is where I am now, but I still only have room for an occassional rice cake and maybe a little quinoa or other whole grain that is cooked. It's hardly worth the effort, though, as I can only eat 1/4 cup and it's hard to cook such a small amount. Bottom line - save the grain carbs for much further down the road - when you actually want to stop losing weight. Focus on protein and healthy veggies, legumes. You will get all the carbs you need from that.
  20. I weighed 400 lbs when i first started but had to lose 30lbs pre-op its not just about losing weight its about making sure your liver has shrunk and that u dont have too much fat around the stomach so the band will actually fit , and ofc standing a better chance of recovering well from surgery .. this is the time when your resolve and determination of getting a band will indicate for you whether u can make it work for you post surgery .. good luck !
  21. Wheetsin, I work for a large health insurer too. Publication 502 is tough to interpret. My personal opinion is that weight loss surgery whether done in the US or outside, should be covered under 502 as a tax deductible expense. Even though it's 'elective,' it's not cosmetic. Elective simply means you decided to have the surgery in advance, vs. needing 'emergency surgery' (or bypass surgery following a heart attack, etc.). Things like hip and knee replacements are also considered 'elective.' Plastic/cosmetic surgery would typically not be considered a deductible expense, although Kristie does give one pause with her explanation above about obesity=disease and the cosmetic surgery to repair a 'deformity from disease.' You could potentially argue that one but I don't know, I suspect IRS auditors can be pretty shrewd. In all matters tax-related, I ALWAYS tell my clients to defer to a tax professional. Back to the opening post, Wheetsin is absolutely correct - any non-covered service (like your cash pay surgery) will not accumulate towards your deductible or out of pocket expense, unfortunately.

    boba?

If you are cleared by your doctor for all foods, it's probably fine. The pearls are just a type of tapioca. But, beware of the sugars - those teas are very high in carbs and even if you get sugar free, the pearls themselves are very caloric. Probably not a good choice for losing weight, IMHO.

    Time to return :(

In my experience people don't notice weight loss on obese people until you've lost about 20% of your total body weight, so you may be in luck. If people know you were out for some kind of surgery, but don't know what kind, you have a couple of options if they ask you what kind of surgery you had: "I'm sorry, I'm really not very good at discussing personal medical matters, but I am fine now, thank you for asking" "I'm sorry, HR advised me it's best not to get into personal medical matters at work, but I appreciate your concern. I am doing fine." --pretend you just received a call or text on your cell and walk away while talking/typing into your phone as you apologize "excuse me???" said in an air of mild disbelief, repeat as necessary If someone flat out asks you if you had weight loss surgery, you can either lie, tell the truth, or say something like "wow, that's personal! Do you think I needed weight loss surgery?" If they just comment generally on weight loss, say something like "hey, thanks for noticing! I've been working really hard!" If they comment generally on your being gone, just say, thanks for your concern, I am doing great and am happy to be back at work. Keep in mind that most people will figure out or assume you've had weight loss surgery eventually, and flat-out lying about it may make people dislike or distrust you. That may or may not be of concern, depending on your workplace, whether you want to count on any of them for referrals or references, etc. Good luck!
  24. So I am 19 almost 20 I have a 5 month old son and a wonderful boyfriend.. I want the lap band SO BAD! I have always been a chubby girl but after I went to college I ballooned to 240 and now after giving birth and gaining 60 lbs while prego I now weigh 256 lbs its a terrible feeling like I said I have always been chubby but now I can feel it starting to affect my health.. I cant get around as easy I'm so much more lazy I have a hard time breathing and I just feel completely uncomfortable in my OWN skin.. I attend the first step at my hospital which is the seminar on Thursday and I have my appt on Feb 9th for consultation! I'm so excited and PRAY I get approved.. I just have a few questions abou the lap band.. the lady at the seminar said that I wont be able to drink caffine or alchol.. which I am fine with but I am not fine with NEVER EVER being able to EVER drink it again.. so that is one of my questions and my second question is.. does the lap band ever get removed or is it something I will have for the rest of my life? and my 3rd question is.. I know that the weight comes off slowly but will I ever be able to lose about 100 lbs I'd like to loose a little more then that but would be fine with 100 Thanks everyone

    This is new

I received a fill in July of this year. I had not received one since November of 2007. (That's when I thought I was a know it all and could do it myself. I was losing weight and didn't need support - of any kind) Boy I was I wrong. I had dropped 30 pounds in 2007 since my surgery in July of 2006, but when I decided to get my a$$ together I was 10 heavier. In April of 2009 you could say I was reborn. I decided that I did need help—OF ANY KIND! I started searching the web, keeping a food journal, joined a support group and went to see my doctor (for the first time since 11/07). I rec’d a fill in July, the doc and I thought there was only 7cc in but we soon found out I had 8cc. He added only .5cc but it was enough. It took a good 2 weeks before I could really feel the restrictions. I’ve always been tight in the morning but now it’s a bit more. I drink before I eat to help loosen things up. I can only eat half of what I used to in the morning and I’m hungry w/in an hour. This is new; Yesterday I became concerned while trying to eat my lunch: [/b]:%20void(0);"]Mission Tortillas - Yellow Corn Tortillas - Super Size (Approx 6.5"), 1 tortilla [/b]:%20void(0);"]Cheese - Cheddar, 0.5 oz [/b]:%20void(0);"]Lettuce - Iceberg (includes crisphead types), raw, 0.5 leaf outer [/b]:%20void(0);"]Sun Vista - Black Beans -- No Salt Added, 0.025 cup [/b]:%20void(0);"]Taco Bell - Taco Sauce - Medium, 1 tbsp I started having heart palpitations after having 3 bits. I put my hand on my chest and could feel it move. It didn’t last long but boy is was scary. I waited a few minutes and it stopped and I was able to finish my taco. I had another taco for dinner and didn’t have any problems. I get stuck more often now I’ve noticed too. I need to remember to chew, chew, chew.
