    May 2022 surgery?

I never got to have a long time before my approval. I started the process on Feb 28th, everything was submitted to my insurance company on March 30th and my insurance company faxed my approval letter to my surgeon on April 1st. And the same day they called me and set my surgery for May 3rd. I was kind of eating what I wanted but now I have to start watching what I eat and changing my habits because a week before my surgery I have to do the all liquid diet. So I want to try and drop a few pounds before the liquid diet, which I know will cause me to lose a few pounds, as well. My doctor didn't give me a specific amount of weight to lose. He just said "try to lose whatever you can before surgery, to make your recovery easier" so, that's what I'm going to do....starting tomorrow (Monday).

Good plan on not weighing yourself - and I'm the same. The unpredictability of the scales is too high, in my opinion. You might have a stall in your numbers over two weeks, but you could go down half a dress size over the same time period. Our bodies and physiology is complex and there are so many contributing factors to the numbers that flash up on the screen. For that reason, I only measure my weight loss by how my clothes fit and feel. It's been great chatting to you tonight! I hope your follow up appointment goes well tomorrow. Mine is 7 weeks away! 😮 Not sure if I should be worried or reassured by that! Ha! xxx

    May 2022 surgery?

I’m not a doctor but if you are 5 weeks before the surgery, just have your tortilla because after the surgery you won’t be able to eat much, also your taste buds will change.

Oh yes, I haven't had any constipation with all these liquids [emoji28] I think my plan is the same as yours. Liquids for another week then the day after Easter (4/18) I can start pureed and soft foods. I'm looking forward to some scrambled eggs lol. I honestly haven't weighed myself since the morning of surgery. I'm prone to becoming obsessive with the scale and the numbers so i'm trying to wait until I go to my follow up appointment tomorrow. That is so reassuring to hear... 😅 I guess (or hope!) it will change when we start on solid food, because it won't "go through" us like liquid does? When will you start on puree and soft foods? I'll start puree in a week and then soft foods a week after that. Have you lost much weight in the last week? I was away from my little brood for a week, as I recovered in peace and quiet at my brother's home. When my eldest boy saw me yesterday, he said "Wow, mum! You look so different!" 😍

    May 2022 surgery?

Thank you! I’m sorry - I’m 5 weeks before surgery and wondering if I can have low carb tortillas and bread…completely agree it’ll be a no-go after. 👍

    May 2022 surgery?

I guess each doctor is different, I’m on my week 4 and I’m not allow to eat tortillas. Only crackers. I do eat Protein ( chicken, turkey, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots) all veggies overcook so it can be easier to chew. I seen many people eating beef and pork. With my Doctor I’m not allow to eat beef and pork in 6 months after the surgery. I did bought whole grain tortillas but I’m not going to eat them. I hear the first 3 months are the months you will lose the most weight so I want to take advantage of that and make my surgery and money worth every sacrifice.
  8. I had the ESG with Dr. McGowan in Cary, NC Oct 14, 2021. VERY happy with him, all his staff and everyone at the Wake Med hospital. FIRST CLASS all the way! That being said. Day of surgery my weight was 253. This coming week is my 6 month anniv and I have lost down to 227. Yes it is great! but I was so hoping for more after 6 months. I reassure myself that my skin will adapt better by losing slower, I haven't had any hair loss, etc. But I am 54 and ready to live my life! This baggage is in my way and keeping me from living my life the way I want to. A few months ago, the nurse put me on Topomax to help with cravings (as my insurance will not pay for Wegovey or other "weight loss" meds- I was a self pay for the surgery). Several months after the surgery I asked the question . . does the Dr. make everyones' stomach in surgery the same resulting 20% size?? or is everyone's different because ... Patient A's stomach could hold 5 lbs of food, and patient B could only hold 1 lb of food. So did they both end up with same size stomach pouch? The answer is no. He gives you stomach pouch that is 20% of YOUR stomach size. So that is why some people can hold more than others. Makes sense. Kind wish I had thought about it pre surgery though! I'd asked for an extra small one! LOL I don't feel a lot of restriction anymore. So I am wondering where do I go from here? Should I ask for a different medication or increased dose of topomax? Does Dr. McGowan have a way to do a scan or ultrasound and see if your sutures have come loose or if your pouch has stretched out? Do they have a way to do a revision and put in tighter sutures or make a smaller pouch? and if they do . . is it the same cost as the original surgery? I know I am under their care program for a year that includes nutrition counseling, etc. Is there a cost to continue that after a year? Anyone who knows answers, please let me know. I want to be able to think about things before my zoom call later this week.

    Sleeve with high BMI

I have to lose a lot as well, like 180lbs. I was and still kinda am thinking the same thing. Like how can I do this with the sleeve. The other poster said some truth about making the permanent sacrifices. That is what I am etching into my brain now. I’m 6 weeks out. My body needs to eat healthy to be at its best I’m finding out. So I have to explore various ways to eat healthy but delicious food and exercise. I’m going to incorporate self care days of massages, foot spas, meditation, journaling and other activities.

Hello everyone! So I’m 5 weeks out and have been told to start doing low carb before the 2 weeks of all liquids. Can I have low carb tortillas and bread?

Question about hair loss after sleeve

WHAAAAT???? Nobody ever told me this!!!! I just had a crown and 3 fillings done and had my teeth deep cleaned. I'm going next week to have sealant put on them because I have sensitive teeth. Holy smokes. I better call my dentist tomorrow. I had absolutely no idea this could happen!!!!
  13. Hi! My surgery was on 4/4/2022 so I'm 6 days post op today. I was sent home with 28 days worth of Lovenox injections to prevent blood clotting. I understand how important they are and 100% plan on doing what I need to do with them, however, I am bruising up after some of the injections. I already have the bruises from the incisions which look ROUGH, but I feel like these bruises might be contributing to the chaos that is my torso right now. I also saw in the side effects and papers about the injections to contact the doctor if you start to bruise, but it's listed as a "minor side effect" and I don't feel sick or anything from it so I've kept on with them and will say something to her at my 1 week post op visit tomorrow. Did anyone have these injections as well and if so, did you have any issues using them or reactions to them?

    April 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hi everyone, I am writing with my postop update. Maybe it will help someone waiting for surgery or in the immediate postop phases. On 4/5/22 I had a lap band to gastric bypass conversion. My procedure was complicated by the fact that I had a hiatal hernia and then the surgeon discovered an umbilical hernia (previously undiagnosed and not seen during preadmission studies) which he also needed to repair. The complexity of the surgery led to a two-night admission. I was on a constant IV drip and had to use the bathroom approximately every hour - the entire time! It really hurt to prop myself up to get out of bed and I would work on developing those muscles preop if I could turn back time. I hardly ate any food (broth and sugar free Jello) in the hospital, and I am still struggling now because I am just not hungry. I walked three times during the two days in the hospital - not ideal but it was the best I could do at the time. My pulse ox dipped to the low 80s several times (my normal is 99-100), so I was using supplemental oxygen to help. My abdomen was incredibly bloated and bruised. It is now going down slightly which I credit to walking and Colace. I cannot stress how helpful I think Colace has been for me. I have to wear a binder around my abdomen, and I do not yet know for how long. It is helpful when I cough and do my breathing exercises. I am now super deconditioned, which really surprised me. I know some members of this forum have been able to bounce back fairly quickly, but everyone should consider the possibility that they might need more time. I still get winded every time I move (i.e., bed to chair, chair to standing, etc.). I need naps and I have never been a napper. I am definitely going to have to take at least an extra week off from work. I try to walk a little a few times a day now and it is very tiring, so I use a cane just for reassurance. All in all, I am so happy with my decision to have surgery! I am extremely grateful to read everyone's stories and see questions and answers on this board and I hope April 2022 Surgery Buddies (and whoever else wants to participate) can move to the postop board next month so we can continue to share our progress. I wish everyone who is still waiting for their April 2022 surgery the best! I will be happy to answer any questions that anyone has. I hope we all keep in touch! Thanks!

Average Weight Loss In 6 Months

I weighted 304lbs surgery day (highest weight ever) and have lost 105lbs so far being 6 months and two weeks out. I’ve had several stalls one lasting an entire month. It’s going comparatively slow now with “just” 1kg per week. I’m 5’8 so my surgeon wants me to lose another 40lbs.

Hi Charlie. Thank you, congratulations on yours as well. Yes, it is very strange for me to struggle eating (drinking) enough, since my struggles have always been the opposite, to try to eat less! I’ve been watching lots of YouTube videos to be reassured that this is normal and that eventually it will get easier. I haven’t started my vitamins yet. I’ve been instructed to wait until the 18th which will be a few days before I start the puréed stage. That could be a reason why I’m feeling so week, so I’m actually looking forward to starting them. I’ve been sipping on a protein shake all morning, but am getting antsy and am wanting to get out in the sun and do some walking. I think that’s probably a good sign. How have you been with getting your walking in?

    Food Before and After Photos

Two lunches this week before and after (when restriction hit). I’m 6months and almost 2 weeks post op. I’m curious if this is considered a lot (?).
  20. Mandatory disclaimer: we are all different and lose (or gain) weight at different rates. with that said, and since you asked (in lbs): 235 start of 2 week pre op diet 138 at 6 months post op (-97lbs) 127 at 7 months (goal) 119 this morning at 3.5 years post op P.S. I’m 5’2” for reference.

Not full time solids, but I do have on occasion. Random things like a like a piece of chicken from one of my kids Chipotle bowls, a (very small) piece of pizza during a birthday party, stuff like that. My rny was 3/1 and I am almost 6 weeks out. Not sure if it helps, but my dietician said rny heal faster than sleeve so we normally progress sooner. Sent from my SM-G781U1 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Loose Skin

I think I can speak on behalf of most of the long-timers on here in that yes, we dreaded the loose skin at first, but we'd take it any day of the week over being morbidly obese again. ANY DAY! I lost over 200 lbs, so I had a lot of loose skin. It was easy to hide in clothes, though (I'll post a picture below). I'd just wear long-ish tops with 3/4 or full-length sleeves and tummy-control leggings (although some thing like Spanx would have worked as well). I had my removed because it started to drive me crazy. My abdominal skin would slap up against me when I exercised - ugh. But yes - it was really just cosmetic, and like I said, no one but me (and my husband) knew it was there. skin doesn't weigh very much. Unless you get a lot of lipo done, too, we're talking less than five lbs. I think I "lost" maybe four lbs when I had it removed (which unfortunately came right back on!) some insurance policies will cover removal if it's causing medical problems, like chronic rashes, that don't respond to conventional treatments. I never had any issues with anything like that, so I paid out of pocket. anyway, here I am BEFORE I had plastic surgery. I had a TON of excess skin, but as you can see, it's pretty easy to hide it if you're wearing the right clothes.

Hi Charlie, congrats on the sleeve. I had the same problem for 7 weeks, I had some swelling and struggled to get liquids down in any amount. Try warm drinks, warm milky coffee and tea, Bovril and oxo are good. Cold shakes and ice lollies, Britvic Tomato juice really helped me, its sugar free and 47 cals for 250mls. All count towards your quota and some days I only managed 1/3rd of this, it gets better in time. Now at 4 and a half months I can take 2 gulps at a time. Is it wind pain or are you taking large gulps, take tiny sips. I have Wind relief tablets from Boots that are great at calming excessive burping type wind. Just do the best you can every day and you will get there. You are still healing. I found my team at Spire were very helpful, call yours if you need reassurance

    Day Of Surgery

A week before surgery, I had to shower in a surgical detergent every day. It wasnt the most pleasant body and hair wash. I got to the hospital at 8 am and got checked in. By 12 noon I was dressed in my gown, sexy socks and cap and being wheeled down to Anaesthetics. I was quickly put under and woke up in my room with a drip and the oddest sensation in my lower legs, I had plastic boots on that pulsed. It stops thrombosis.

Hi everyone. I’m so glad I’ve found this forum. I’ve just had my sleeve on 4th April so nearly a week ago. Currently struggling with my liquid intake, I get terrible wind pains when drinking. Any hints or tips and is this normal?
