  1. Hey everyone! I'm new here, but have been reading a lot of the posts. I just created my profile. My preop for surgery is next week and my surgery is scheduled in August. I'm in complete panic as I gained weight since this process started back in February. I'm worried the doctor and nutritionist will berate me or worse, kick me out of the program and deny my surgery. I'm also really stressing about this Pre-Op Diet. I don't know all the details yet about my specific diet, but I'm sure it will be very harsh. I have Fatty Liver Disease and my liver is incredibly inflamed. They are going to want me on the diet immediately after meeting with them and I just don't know if I can do it. I don't like being hungry, it's one of the most uncomfortable feelings to me. It just sounds like sheer misery is in store and I'm scared about all this. My husband is being as supportive as possible, but he can't seem to stop snacking in front of me! Please tell me your experiences with pre-op appointments and the diet.

    June 2022 surgery buddies

I'm two weeks out from surgery today and 100% not interested in any food/liquids. My sense of smell seems to be increased and most smells are making me feel nauseated. I have another 8/9 days left on liquids before I can move on to soft foods. I had been looking forward to that, but even know I'd be okay not eating ever again. Currently, I'm struggling to get in one Fairlife shake a day and about 4oz of soup.

At six weeks post RNY, I went to the Turks and Caicos for a week. Absolutely no problems. Just preplan for food and you should be good.
  8. It’s been 3 weeks since my ESG procedure. I was concerned about the 4th of July but I got Covid. So, I’ve been isolated upstairs πŸ₯Ί. But all is good. Felt bad for about 2 days, now getting better Everything is going well my procedure. No issues getting water, tea or coffee in. I’m typically over 120oz a day. Protein is primarily from supplements iso pure and Core / Fairlife. I’m sure missing the standard Fairlife Protein shakes. The 30gr of protein per bottle. I can’t find any at Sam’s or Costco. I’m now ordering on Amazon at nearly twice the cost. Although a lot cheaper compared to eating out lol. Anyone else having a difficult time finding it? Let me know of any locations. My weight loss has been going well. Pre Surgery weight 336 Surgery weight 331 Current Weight 307 My goal weight is 270-275. Same as my college football weight. I’m not hungry but when I smell food, I would love to grab a bite. This week I start soft foods. I’m sure my weight loss will stall a bite as I’m sure most was still water. Good luck everyone If you’re looking into ESG, this is still a relatively new procedure. So far, I would fully recommend it. The procedure was quick. I left my hotel at 6am and was back in my hotel room by 930am. No cutting! Only feeling gas pains. Some nausea but not bad. The first few days I was hungry. Since I was tolerating everything, the doctor increased my protein to 120g. Mind you, I’m 6’7 at the time 330. Procedure was on Wednesday, flew home Friday and flying for work on Sunday.

    Post-Surgery Travel

I took a day trip the first week after surgery. I just packed a small cooler bag with waters and protein drinks. We went to lunch and I had soup. Walked around the outlets shopping, I did pretty good just got tired quick. I have since spent weekends away out of town, now onto normal foods. You just have to look over menu's and don't hesitate to ask for substitutions. I ordered a side of broccoli and took 1 bite and realized it had so much butter it was ridiculous. Now, I always remember to order my vegetables plain or get fresh veggies on the side. I always take protein shakes with me, to make sure I balance and meet my protein goals.

By week 7 you should be fine. But yes, breaks each day would be an idea just in case. You may find it helps to take some food with you Take a little esky with you to keep things cold & restock with ice each day (unless you’ll have access to a freezer to refreeze ice bricks). Pick up yoghurt from grocery stores, pack some shakes, meal replacement soups, cheese, jerky, protein bars, etc. just in case you struggle to find suitable protein rich & plan friendly food as you travel. Enjoy your trip.
  11. I am scheduled for revision from sleeve to rny on Aug 10th. My question is, how soon is it safe to travel? I am scheduled for a long driving trip about week 7 post surgery. (Trip was scheduled months before gettin insurance approval and surgery date.) I plan on taking frequent breaks and overnight stops as well as sharing driving responsibilities. Is there any real concerns as long as I follow diet and fluid intake protocols? I recovered quickly after my sleeve surgery, but I have no idea what to expect with the revision. Did any of you travel soon after surgery? Sent from my SM-T500 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Food Before and After Photos

Butter, butter, butter. Can’t stand margarine - tastes so synthetic. I agree with the others. The little you’d eat on this is nothing. It’s not like you’ll be drowning your steak & lobster in butter or eating that amount every day. If you use little added fat in your meal prep most of the time, adding a little more occasionally isn’t going to make a huge difference. Just realised I’ve been using the same 500g tub of butter since December. It may be time for a fresh tub. πŸ˜† PS - I used to mash anchovies with butter to put on my steak sometimes pre surgery. Don’t enjoy anchovies alone but like this yum! Plus omega 3, selenium & other nutrients, & salty goodness on your steak.

Stand still for 3-4 months now

Your info says you had the surgery on May 20th of this year. That puts you at 6 1/2 weeks out. Maybe you need to just update your info. Beyond that, I would cut out the snacks, make sure you're watching your protein, carbs, and fats, and maybe increase your exercising. If you do it once a day, try twice a day. If you already do it twice a day, try doing different things per exercise session. Maybe add stretching or yoga.

My taste buds are weird now LOL

So I've some time to taste more stuff. Pineapple is super sweet and not tart anymore lol I just don't care for bacon, but I like sausage. I don't like ham, but I like porkchops. I don't care for avocado but love guacamole. Used to love steak, now it's just ok. Still like chicken (dark meat, now white). Can't do lettuce at all. Used to love cottage cheese and sour cream but they taste sour and almost rotten now. Have almost no tolerance at all for salt and sugar. I figured this kind of stuff happened with bypass, not the sleeve. It's really weird. And then there's my sense of smell. What is going on?? I smell things like stuff burning, poop, rotten stuff, etc. And of course, there's nothing there. And my sense of smell is so much more sensitive to the stuff that's actually there. My husband was changing the cat litter and the smell of the urine had me literally gagging (and it gets scooped twice a week and changed every Sunday. So it's not like it was horrible and nasty). The smell of my daughter's paints had me gagging. And the smell of house cleaning supplies just does me in. UGH. I hope this passes soon. It's horrible!!!!!!
  15. I take a different approach to meal prep than what you describe. Instead of cooking one meal and eating the same thing all week, I've built up a collection of meals frozen in individual portions. Soup, chili, and stew freeze really well. I also make various meals that consist of meat, vegetables, beans, and sauce (there are lots of Instant Pot recipes like this) to freeze in individual portions. Most recipes yield 10+ portions, so I can cook three times and have a month's worth of dinners. I highly recommend Souper Cubes, which are like giant ice cube trays. They're available in several sizes, and the 4-ounce size is perfect for a single serving. The portions stack easily, so you can store many portions in a small space (much more compact than Tupperware containers). For a quick and easy meal, I dump some riced cauliflower in a bowl, throw in a souper cube, and heat in the microwave. Sometimes I also have a side salad or a side of veggies. I have enough different meals that I can eat a different one every night of the week. Here are a few of my favorites: White chicken chili Egg Roll in a Bowl Zuppa Toscana Chicken Divan Pork Chile Verde Brunswick Stew Creamy Chicken and Spinach Soup (I omit the tortellini and use more chicken)
  16. I was sleeved in Nov 2021. I welcome the smaller portions and to be honest I don't want to go back to eating the same amount that I had before. I can comfortably eat 3 ounces of anything, and I am satisfied. The thought of eating more really makes me feel ill. I follow ALL the rules from my nutritionist/dietician including tracking my meals and calories, macros etc. I am taking this seriously because I never want to go back to the way I was. I feel so much better physically and emotionally. I am very concerned about stretching out my stomach to the way it was. No way will I let myself do that. It's important to eat and beware in the moment. I also started meditation and that helps my anxiety, which in the past leads me to snack. Starting weight 325 Surgery day weight 315 Current weight 224

I am 13 days post op. 10 lbs since day of surgery. Been stalled last 4 days. I did lose 7 lbs the week before surgery. Tomorrow I start soft foods. I did go ahead and try some refried been mash tonight and I can only eat maybe 1 oz without vomiting back up into my mouth. Iv been struggling with getting in liquids and liquid proteins due to restriction. Can’t imagine eating enough to get protein in. This is way more difficult to manage nutritionally then I ever expected

Two weeks post op-today. Lost 39lbs since I started pre-op liquid. 14 pounds since surgery. TBH, my post-surgery weight loss is a little slower than expected, but that's probably because of the 25 I lost on the pre-op. I also gained 5 overnight in surgery (liquids) so had to lose that. So while I'm a tad disappointment, I'm not unhappy. I think it was unreasonable hopes given the circumstance. Overall, 39 lbs in a month. I am very, very happy.

I'll be four weeks post-op tomorrow. My highest weight was 238, surgery weight was 214 and today I weighed 197. I was so excited to get under 200 - it's been a long time! I'm very pleased with my weight loss so far. I stalled for more than a week but just kept doing what I should be doing and the numbers started to drop again. I don't know exactly what I expected but I'm happy with my progress.

4 weeks post op tomorrow. I’ve lost 31 lbs. this has so far exceeded my wildest expectations that I am blown away. ETA: highest weight ever was when insurance paperwork was submitted at 222. Got down to 209 on 6/8 day of surgery. Came home at 222 from IV fluids. (Can’t make this stuff up) I’m at 191 now and FitTrack says I’m averaging 7/10 of a lb a day. HTH

    July 2022 peeps!

OMG I had covid in May, and they had to make sure my positive test was at least 6 weeks prior to surgery. I thought mine would have to be rescheduled but we had about 2 weeks leeway to spare. Then they moved it back another week anyway for something unrelated >.> The fear while she was doing the math was rough, even if only for a couple minutes.

True. Good point and def no complaints lol. My office told me consistent dieting prior to the surgery making small changes impacts the liver just as much as a liquid diet. They only require you to avoid fatty foods and eat as lean and green as possible 2 weeks prior. Just liquid one day before. My liver was perfect doing that! I was super nervous that it wouldn’t be seeing everyone else on liquid or extreme calorie restriction lol

    Feeling too full

Okay I just did a quick google search and found these sample post op instructions. It looks like 1/2 cup is about when you should expect to feel full. Maybe measure out a bit less than half cup (divide it into four meals) until you can eat 1/2 cup comfortably. Consume 5 to 6 small meals daily until you can tolerate Β½ cup of food at one time – then eat 3 small meals and 1 snack. Avoid drinking liquids 30 minutes before a meal and 1 hour after a meal. Take 20-30 undistracted minutes to eat each meal. Continue to eat and swallow slowly
