    Pain one month post op

I had that same thing 3-4 weeks out, and wound up in ER as well. Turns out in that large incision, there is a stitch that holds the muscle that the doc pulled the stomach out through. I strained that muscle and had a little tear where the stitch was. Rested for a couple days and I was fine. I just overdid it -- I was feeling good so thought I was all healed!
  2. Yep, call the surgeon. It sounds very similar to what happened to me and it turned out to be a stricture (narrowing of the opening exiting your stomach due to overgrowth of scar tissue). It is a super easy fix - they do an EGD with a balloon dilation. I had it done twice about 1 week apart because it was so tight, they were afraid to expand it too much the first time. I felt better immediately. I did still say nauseas for quite a while (up to about 6 months) and had to keep taking Zofran but it finally went away and I haven't looked back! So sorry you are having such a rough time! I truly do understand! Hang in there! And call your dr tomorrow!

Eating Plan for 2010 - Getting back on track.

I also have about 7ccs in my band, and I also have plateaued over the past month or so. I've seen the scale go up and down so much I can't even keep track. My doc says that's what happens in maintenance. Since I've never made it to the maintenance phase the million and one times I've done Weight Watchers, I didn't know. Anyhow, he gave me a slight fill, and I have started back to walking daily, which I had stopped doing when we got 2 feet of snow dumped on us a week before Christmas. I also have sworn off chips, which were my personal downfall over the holidays. And... I am determined to go back to the pool starting this weekend!!!! I'm glad I'm not the only one making a fresh start. Good luck to everyone!!!
  4. In my first consult with the nurse practioner I was told I needed to loose about 30 pounds before surgery. Keep in mind I had already lost 30 pounds on my own with exercise. When I met with the surgeon he felt around and said that he felt he could do the operation as I was. At that point I had lost about 25 pounds. Having read that people are put on a presurgery liquid diet I asked him if I was going to have to do one. He replied "Well if you want to do a liquid diet; here's the one I recommend." Well that wasn't exactly what I asked. Since the diet was kind of expensive and the dietician in the group was'nt that hip on it; and I was loosing weight on my own I did'nt do it. Two weeks later I met with him for what was supposed to be my last presurgery meeting and I had lost another 5 pounds and he asked if I had been on his diet. I said no and he was a bit irritated. I was a bit hurt because one of his collegues had said I did'nt need to do it. Well I spent the $230 on two weeks of the diet expecting my surgery would be in two weeks. The liquid diet was giving me allergy like sensations and was just too low in calories. 500 calories a day and I did it for 5 days and did'nt loose any weight. Please keep in mind that I do an hour of moderate cardio a day. I went to the nurse practioner and she told me to stop the diet due to the reactions I was having. I have a meeting with the surgeon this week and wonder what he is going to say. I have been on a partial liquid diet with whey protein shakes low cal/fat/carb, high protein. I have lost about 20 pounds since I last saw him. Not sure how this meeting will go.

    Dislike the waiting game .....

Yeah the waiting game isn't a whole lot of fun. But I've grown patient because I've spent 6 months in the process so what's another week or two at this point?

    Fat free vs. fat????

Wow, this just seems to bring more questions. Why would all of our dr.'s give such different meal plans and exceptions for the exact same surgery? They said the no fat diet is only pre-op to shrink my liver, I am not sure if this diet will continue after surgery or if they ease up a little. I hope so because 2 weeks pre-op, and 6 weeks post-op of this diet will be rough...but nothing I can't handle!!

    Painful Mushies

Well it finally happened! I got my band on Tuesday and so far so good. I am a little sore and finding it harder to get around than I thought. Some gas but I am moving to get that up and out. It is hard to sip but I am doing it. Ate some liquified chicken soup and so far so good. It is only day three and hope I can keep the variety in my diet. Any recipes for mush and slush food please share. Thanks for all the advice before surgery it helped and I made it so far!
  8. Hi! I had me sleeve surgery on the 2nd and am VERY disguraged. I had lost 12lbs during my fasting the week before it. I had a minor complication and was on IV fuilds for 2 days longer than I should have. I came home 20lbs heavier than when I went in. I have lost 98% of the Water weight but thats it. My measurements have not changed much. I have been doing everything I am suppose to be doing. So, when will I actually start losing weight? Christa

    food tastes weird

I was on a liquid diet for three weeks after surgery. By the time I got back onto soft foods, everything tasted weird. I was a serious coffee drinker before surgery (I live near Seattle, and it's the LAW... ) but suddenly coffee tasted awful to me. Over the next several weeks I needed to retrain my taste buds to what I liked and what I didn't. I think it was somehow connected to breaking the sugar cycle. Even now, nine months after surgery, if i eat a sugary food, it seems terribly sweet to me, and even a small amount of sugar goes a long way. Not a bad thing, but definitely different than I was used to. (I rewarded myself with a fresh-made milkshake in a restaurant the other day while having dinner out with friends, and I ended up giving away more than half of it. I just couldn't handle all the sweetness.) You're perfectly normal. Hang in there - things WILL come back to normal, just adjusted for your new bandster palate. It's all part of the journey. Dave
  10. Mine is up and down all the time. Last week was my first weekly weigh in where I was up, due to my monthly. I weigh everyday and record on Fridays and at 'anniversaries'. That way I see the trend and not stress about the daily number.

    weekly weight loss?

Hi, I'm new to the forum and here you when you've lost and gained, lost and gained. That is why I decided to have the gastric sleeve to use as a tool to help me better control my portions. I am now 6 weeks out from my surgery date and am down 40 lbs. I would agree that in the first stages there is quiet a bit of restriction, right now I can probably only eat about 2 oz at a time, but my NUT tells me my pouch is still in the healing process and I should be able to handle a larger portions around 6 months. I have struggled some with energy leave but at 6 weeks I am beginning to feel more like myself pre surgery. I am looking forward to the months to come.

    Cereal.

That's good tho. I'm allowed bread pasta etc now and was cleared at 8 weeks. I had one gluten free waffle at first and had a half of pb&j on whole grain whole wheat but honestly haven't had it since! It made me feel yucky. You're not missing anything lol.
  13. Ok I thought I was going to have my surgery this week but I have had the cold from hell for the last couple weeks and can't breathe for anything! We rescheduled surgery for may 27th after my hubby graduates college and can stay home with me and be at the hospital with me. New countdown and gotta make more check up appts with everyone I saw already but I'm just glad everything's set up and can start to make this change! I'm so excited! It's still a while away but I cannot wait to do this
  14. I was banded on Nov. 3rd. My doctor says 1 week clear , one week full liq., and one week soft. I did 5 days of clear and started on the protien shake. I only take two a day and i drink lots of water. I am never hungery but i am week and i need my energy with two kids and all. About the gas pain since you probably are still using pain medications your bowel will not be active enough to expel the gas out of your body.(sorry) I had terrable gas pains and finally i remembered what they gave me in the hospital post my c-section4 years ago. Dulcolax laxative suppositories. They work very well.
  15. @NMJG I know.... by next week they say I'm supposed to be eating almost anything.... What? Not me.... I know I can't. I am eight weeks post op and can eat a lot of things now so they say..... but i cannot tolerate raw foods.... that's for certain. Back to chicken salad, yoghurt, cottage cheese, beans maybe. funny i can tolerate chili very well.... the beans are very soft. Yes white meat chicken is very hard to eat but the minced up chicken in chicken salad goes down easier. My staple is sugar free bomb pops...... they get me through the day..... I don't eat more than 2. The coldness and sweetness is a treat.

Time, grasshopper, time....it will come. Follow your plan and you'll be fine. Fretting does nothing but make you crazy and miserable!!! You are you and your body will lose at it it's own pace and in its own way...but it will come if you're doing what you should it really feels like you should lose 20 pounds that first week. You've eaten nothing!!! But our bodies are resourceful and know how to hang on to ever ounce when stressed. Take a deep breath, you'll be okay! HW 312, pre-op (RNY) 255, current weight 206.8
  22. Hi there! Has anyone out there had Anterior cervical spinal fusion after RNY? My spine surgery is scheduled for June 3rd. I have 3 levels that need to be fused as there is damage to the vertebrae, the discs are almost completely gone, I have spinal stenosis which has resulted in a flattening on my spinal cord and I have spondylothesis which means one of my vertebrae has actually slipped out of place and is putting pressure on the nerve. Also I have bone spurs called by arthritis. All of this is putting severe pressure on the nerves and spinal cord causing terrible neck and shoulder pain, headaches and numbness and tingling down my left arm. I have been doing a ton of research on line about this surgery to better understand how to prepare for my recovery. Because they go through the throat and move everything out of the way (this is the safest because of your spinal cord) it can cause a lot of swelling in your throat. This can make swallowing very difficult and can cause some choking. I have read that drinking fluids can be very difficult. In the beginning most people will live on applesauce for a week or two. I am worried about my Protein and Water intake. has anyone had this surgery after weight loss surgery and if so do you have any hints or suggestions for me on ensuring I get my protein in? I know this is going to be so important for healing those fusions. Also if you have found a good forum somewhere that I can plug into? I have yet to find one that is operating currently. Thanks for your help!

    First Appointment

So I work in the medical community and I have an appointment with a bariatric surgeon on 07/21. In preparation for this I had consultations with a pulmonologist and a cardiologist. I have appointments already scheduled for after the appointment with a nutritionist, psychologist, and gastroenterologist. I have my stress echo scheduled (07/28) and my sleep apnea appointment tonight. I've read several books and done a bit of research to prepare. Is there anything else I should do in preparation? I work strange hours and cannot always say I'll be out by time X, Y, or Z but I have a flexible schedule for the next four weeks hence wanting to schedule my specialists and testing as much as possible.

    In the beginning...

This is for me. Ok so I am nearly 40, married, three kids and I have always been overweight. I am sick of the comments "your not fat" or "you have beautiful skin"( yeah dont look to close!) and my favorite "your healthy" No I'm not! I am always doing for others and then blaming them for my hangups and failures. I am sick and tired of getting dressed up thinking i look nice and then arriving at said function being surrounded by tiny gorgeous women that dont sweat. :toetap05: So after great deliberation I have decided on the band! Yeah I was confident and excited and now I am kinda starting to freak the closer I get to surgery date which is Feb 20th 2009. My start weight is 108kgs. I am frightened, hey like what am I going to eat, what if there are complications blah blah, you know what EXCUSES! my whole life is made up of excuses! so hear we go!
  25. I gained 11 pounds between surgery, IVs and the long flight back home. It actually took until the end of my first month post op to see a drop on the scale. Small fluctuations are normal. Recuperating from major surgery, tracking calories and eating a very restricted diet can give us the expectation to see a consistent drop on the scale. We want immediate results for our hard work and to prove to us that we made the right choice. But it's pretty normal for your weight to fluctuate from day to day, up and down. The only thing that really helps is adding in Water - fiddling with your diet is unnecessary. It's part of the journey that we tell ourselves we're ready for, but stalls, stops and starts (and even tiny gains) are perfectly normal and you will most likely experience them. Put the scale away as much as possible in the beginning. In my opinion, it's necessary to weigh daily in maintenance as it keeps you accountable. But in the early months it just makes you crazy and makes you obsess about what you're eating - a habit you should break in favor of adopting overall healthier habits. Weigh once a week or every few days and you'll like the results better. Good luck and congrats on your new sleeve, ~Cheri
