Is anyone's goal weight higher than the BMI chart weight?
lauraellen80 replied to her1981's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My surgeon didn't give me a goal, he just said that the average loss would be about 60-70% of my excess weight. That would have put me still in the "obese" range, so I didn't pay a lot of attention to that. I initially set my personal goal at 145, which was still in the "overweight" category for my height, because it was the lowest weight I could realistically see myself at. But as the weight was coming off, I realized that I could revise my goal downward, so I picked 134.8 because it was just in the "normal" category and would put me right at 100 lbs lost. Then I hit that and decided that it'd be nice to have some "wiggle room" and went for 125-130. I'm now working on maintenance but am still losing a little and am at 114.4 at the moment. Even when I was a ballet dancer, I couldn't maintain under 120, so this is really bizarre for me. Since puberty, there has never been a time in my life where I wasn't trying (or hoping) to lose weight. So, to some extent, your body will dictate where you'll end up. I think there are a lot of factors at play--how long you were overweight/obese, your age, your metabolism, genetics, etc. -

HiOn BariatricPal if you go to 1. Forums. 2. Main Forum Bypass Surgery. 3. Gastric band to bypass revision. You can read dozens of accounts of peoples experiences with the band and how and why they're having it revised. I tried to copy some links for u but it doesnt work with this app. Good luck. Julie. Band to sleeve and deadly worried
NoMoBand replied to moe1983's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Moe, I have revised from band to sleeve due my esophagus also enlarging. I'm 11 months into my journey and it is going extremely well with the exception that weight loss is much slower and I'm ok with that. There is a Huge difference between band and sleeve with all positives on the sleeve! Once you have healed you will learn to appreciate the sleeve and the "no mores" - no more stuck episodes, no more sliming, no more choking episodes while sleeping, no more unfills/fills, no more worries about ending up in an emergency situation and no bariatric medical experience available, no more port issues, no more high maintenance, no more.............. Congratulations on your revision. You won't regret it one bit! You will be fine! jake -
Antidepressants Post Op?
jnt1 replied to Erin Nicole Davis Kling's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The 80% figure is based on a Swiss study in 2010, published in Lancet. I dont have the link anymore but you could probably google something like "gastric band failure rate"?If you go onto the forum section on Bariatricpal there is a section for "gastric band to bypass" you can read numerous threads from patients who have had the band and revising to bypass. I didnt want to believe it but sadly it is not a good procedure...most patients end up with hernias due to the pressure in the new small pouch...its just physics. The website of Dr Rutledge (USA surgeon) has a lot of info about band failures. He has researched it extensively and does 100's of revisions. Sent from my GT-I9505 using the BariatricPal App -
Curious CPAP question for ya'll
josiek1988 replied to Sandy GlueStick's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi, my name is Josie and I am preparing for band to sleeve revision. I work for a Pulmonary and sleep clinic and I use a cpap. Let me answer a few questions for you. Yes, your insurance should pay for it or at least a portion of it. It all depends on your policy. As for paying out of pocket, if you buy a new machine, they are very expensive and that doesn't include the mask and supplies. You an get them used on ebay and places like that. Sometimes the equipment company may even have used ones you can buy or rent. But honestly, after you loose weight the need for the cpap may resolve. I can tell you the left untreated, apnea can cause enlarged heart among other issues. In our office, we see lots of bariatric pre-op patients. If your sleep study determined that you need a cpap, your surgeon may not do surgery until you have a cpap and show your compliant. Let me know if you have any other questions. If I don't know the answer, I can ask one of our docs. I hope this helps. Sent from my SM-T350 using the BariatricPal App -

June - July sleevers?
josiek1988 replied to betterme38's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am doing a band to sleeve revision all in 1 surgery. I am already on cpap and feel better with it but will be happy when its gone! I am only required to do 3 months of supervised weight loss. I guess because I have the band already. I dont have to loose any weight i just cant gain an ounce. There is no pre op diet either but i am going to do the same liver defatting diet i did before i got the band. I should be done with my last nut appointment the end of June. I am going on a cruise in early July. So I am hoping that end of July is d day. My birthday is mid August and I wouldn't mind a bit if I had to drink my birthday meal!!!! Here's hoping ???? I totally agree with you! I hate my band to and I had it since 2011 it's caused so much problems. Now I am revising it to sleeve next week however I am so afraid that I will have the same issue and its permanent procedure.

Wouldn't you know it? I have been steadily losing for about two months (I had lap band revised to RNY in July) and I plateaued at 200.0 last week!! Now I'm bouncing between 201-202. Sigh. I know I'm not supposed to weigh myself every day, but I was really looking forward to 199. I'm down 74 right now. I've got 41 more to reach my goal of 160. Alright, pity party over. Thanks for listening.

Stretched Pouch
bikerchick519 replied to rblakely63's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I had an egd done about 2 1/2 years after my sleeve and was told it was stretched. I suspect it stretched about a year post op as that's when I stopped losing weight and noticed I could eat more than before. I just had a revision to mini bypass and I'm now 5 days post op. After my sleeve stretched I had acid reflux and never could lose any more and then I gained about 30 pounds. -
Antidepressants Post Op?
jnt1 replied to Erin Nicole Davis Kling's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was banded in 2008...took my small anti deps no probkems. Take them to hospital with you and they will administer to you as they should be.After years struggling with tge band im having a revision to bypass. If its possible fir you to go with sleeve instead i recommend it. Tge band is hughly fallinle and 80% of bands have to be removed within 10 years due to hiatus hernua, overworked esophagus, and weight gain. Mist banders will tell you it is the biggest medical con of the 20th century. Sorry for tge bad news but Re think if possible. Have a read of the posts under the forum heading "gastric band to bypass". It will give you a pretty realistic picture of the band. Sent from my GT-I9505 using the BariatricPal App -

Considering gastric sleeve after having lapband removed 3 months ago
JamieLogical replied to #WantToBeFit's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Just a heads-up. You will need to take several Vitamins every day with sleeve as well. You won't be able to physically eat enough food to get in all of the nutrients you need. Sleeve doesn't have the issues with malabsorption that bypass has, but the restriction and emphasis on Protein first means you won't be eating as many fruits and vegetables as are required for proper nutrition. You will likely be on a multi-Vitamin, B12, and Calcium for life. Also, possibly Iron. And my nutritionist also recommended a probiotic every day. Can't help you with info on revision, since I was never banded, but there are a lot of others on these forums that have been revised from band to sleeve, so hopefully they can help! -

Due to your age, are you able to get a revision? Wondering as my mother is 72 and has a failed lapband and is looking into getting it removed. Shes concerned a surgeon wont want to do it due to her age.

Nerve pain after gastric bypass
Stephanie Rodriguez68 replied to josnjos's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi there, Ran across your post. I had a revision surgery in November of 2014 and a few months ago I started having this weird pain in my right ankle to big toe area. I got checked for gout, which it wasn't, but now the pain is in my left side. It's hard to describe the pain. It's kind of numbing, kind of burning and pulling. My pcp said sometimes it can be caused by low B levels, but he didn't check them. I am hoping to see my bariatric surgeon soon. I hope you find some answers. I also had left groin and pain in both upper thighs, but nothing came up. -
I am hoping that someone here might have had a similar experience as me and can give me some pointers. I had my lap band surgery in April, 2008. I did fairly well in the beginning and lost a majority of my weight in the first 2-3 years. Since then, I've yoyo'd within a few pounds. I went regularly for adjustments but got close to the max for my band and started having problems eating. There wasn't really a meal where some part of it didn't come back up (my lap band folks know what I mean). I got sick (Bronchitis) back in December and went to see my PCP and talked about my unhappiness with my overall results. She referred me to a surgeon at a different hospital who was doing a lot of revisions. I went to see him in early January and told him about all the problems I was having. He sent me for a swallow study and determined that my band was inflated too much. At my next appointment, he removed all the fill and now I have almost 0 restriction. In the midst of all this, the office submitted to my surgeon to see if my insurance would cover my revision. Like I mentioned earlier, I didn't lose all that much weight. My surgeon is from Europe, where they have been doing lap band longer than in the US, and there is has been found not to have good long term results. My current surgeon isn't even doing the lap band anymore for this reason. Long story short, my initial pre-certification was denied and my initial appeal was denied. I didn't go through all the pre-op appointments I (I did cardiology and psychiatrist) because I didn't want to do them all if I was going to be denied, but now am wondering if there wasn't enough ammo for insurance to pay for revision. I had Keystone when I had the initial surgery and am back to Independence Blue Cross (PPO) (the same insurance company) and that is probably the reason I'm being denied. My BMI is still over 40, and am getting even more discouraged due to having gained back a nice amount of weight. I'm about to file the 2nd level appeal. Has anyone gone through this and had decision reversed? What did you say during 2nd appeal. I'm looking for guidance from anyone who may have gone through the same thing. Thanks!!!!

Sleeve to Mini Bypass Revision
bikerchick519 replied to Bogart79's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had the sleeve in Nov 2011 and lost 88 pounds. Then I gained about 35. I also had a lot of acid reflux. I just got the revision to mini bypass in Tijuana 4 days ago. I was scheduled with Dr. Illan but he had an emergency appendectomy the day of my surgery so Dr. Zavalza stepped in and did my surgery. I would not hesitate to recommend Mexico for weight loss surgery to any of my family. I've had very positive experiences here. I'm flying home today and I feel great. I would have went with my original surgeon Dr. Kelly for the revision but his price was a lot higher. It sounds like you should go with a different surgeon than your original one if you are having doubts that he did it wrong. good luck -
