    Weight loss before surgery?

I"m with Kaiser in Bakersfield,CA, and they want you to lose 10% of your bodyweight on your own(in 12 wks) before having the surgery. To them, this proves you're serious about the lifestyle changes you are going to have to make. I have changed my lifestyle, but not lost weight, and now I don't know if they'll approve my surgery or not. It seems silly to me too. Obviously if I could lose weight on my own, I would and not spend the money to have surgery.

  4. About 10 inches under my port scar I keep getting a stabbling pain, then it feels like a burning sensation. It is very painful and I immediately have to try to straighten up to relieve the pain. This has been going on for 3 days now. I am 11 days PO. Does anyone know what this is? could i have nerve damage? It is quite bothersome and hurts when I am sitting or bend a certain way. It also happens first thing in the morning when I wake up and try to get out of bed. Today it happened when I was driving and I almost had to pull over.

    Heprin Shots

Yes, I took the shots 2x a day for 14 days. My surgeon said that I was a risk for blood clots because of my excess weight, birth control pills, and having surgery. I stopped taking my BC pills one month prior to surgery and resumed them one month after surgery. I had no complications, but was glad for the preventative measures since I have lost two dear friends to a pulmonary embolisms. I did have bruising on my stomach for weeks from the shots and hard spots but I massaged these daily and now, 10 weeks later, everything is fine.

    Do you think it possible....

Nikki, Congratulations on your sugery!! I agree with the other poster, 17 pounds is a bit of a stretch to expect, but sometimes 10 lbs is also. You can work your butt off (like me) and maybe not lose as fast as everyone else. ( I avg 5 lbs a month with heavy excercise and pretty good eating habits). Everyone is different. It is great to have a goal and work as hard as you can to get to that goal, but if you don't quite make it, you should still be very proud of what you have accomplished. Your friends should love you for who you are, not what size bathing suit you wear. I definitely dont want to discourage you, but I want you to understand, we dont always make our goals....Good luck on your goals!! I'll be rooting for you to make it!! Melissa

    I lost 200 in 18 months

Congrats! I'm still looking at dr's for lap band. I have 2 appts/seminars in the next 10 days. If they recommend a bypass I'll direct them to your post! Large weightloss can be done with the band- you just have work at it. Something I've from this site is the band is a tool, it'll only work if you use it right.
  8. This is what I am doing: It is very similar to yours 7:00-Shake, Multivitamin, Calcium 10:00-B12 12:00-Shake, Multivitamin, Calcium 2:00-Shake 6:00-Chicken broth, Calcium 10:00-Iron And 32oz+ of water That equals-520 calories (They said that I needed at least 1000)-96 grams of protein (They said that I needed at least 68) I hope that I am doing it right. Good luck! Where are you having your surgery?
  9. So, first of all, 10 lbs in two weeks isn't that shabby, that's 5 lbs/wk, 20 lbs/month etc. I kind of get your surgeon's concern, if you're breaking the rules this soon, then what about 6 months from now. But, you are still recovering from surgery, there's internal swelling and the effects from surgery, so he's jumping the gun and should be more encouraging as you begin this transition. So, objectively, has he been supportive, neutral, or critical? Surround yourself with a healthy and considerate support system and BP is a good start. Just don't forget, this isn't a magic pill, it's going to be hard work, its going to take all the determination you've got and you'll have to learn to live a healthy new lifestyle. The sleeve is all yours now, learn to use it, it can be your best friend or your worst enemy, get to know one another and learn to listen to it and you'll be in a much better place a year from now.
  10. I'm about 6 1/2 months out. I have had alcohol once and I haven't had a single bowl of cereal since I was sleeved. Nobody can make you drink and eat that stuff except for you. The sleeve doesn't make you change your eating habits--you do that. Remember the part about not drinking when you eat? You can't eat cereal with milk--same thing. You're just diluting the cereal down, it's passing straight through and you get hungry quicker. I strongly suggest meeting with a dietician. Your physician should have provided you with a meal plan. I lost hair between 3 and months. You should be taking a multi-vitamin, vit D, Vit B12 and Calcium at the very least. You should be eating 60+ grams of Protein a day. Stop buying cereal. You will not be able to eat like you used to and keep the weight off. I'm down 77 lbs and I still cheat every now and then. I keep chocolate chips in the freezer so I get a crunchy/sweet snack sometimes. I eat pretzels ( I count out 10) when I want something salty. Stop buying cereal. If it's not there, you won't be able to eat it. Don't even go down the cereal aisle. And lay off the partying for awhile. There are plenty of things you can enjoy without alcohol. My diet plan is basically 3-4 oz of protein 3 times a day. I can have a low-carb veg if I'm still hungry AFTER eating the protein. I stay between 500-800 calories a day. Sometimes I still do a Protein shake at Breakfast. I eat around 20 grams of carbs a day. It's really a mindset, changing your attitude about food and developing self-control. You have to do the work--the sleeve only helps you with portion control. There are days I eat crap too. I think probably everyone does sometimes--protein can be boring. Save the crap for special occasions or just the occasional splurge.

    2/6 Sleevers Check In

Hey sleeve buddies! I went for my one week check up on Monday. Everything going well. So far I'm down 10 pounds since surgery. Woo hoo but damn I am sick of liquids! Bring on the mush! Doctor said technically I start on Monday but he wouldn't be opposed if I started on Friday as long as I can tolerate it. Blended soup is so not appetizing but it does the job. Learning my new tummy is interesting. Strange sensations but no pain and just a little discomfort from time to time. Has anyone else noticed bad hunger breath since surgery?
  12. If you're doing the sleeve and your work isn't super exertion like construction work or something, I'd say 2 weeks. You'll feel better right away, maybe a little tired, and you can't lift more than 10 pounds for 6 weeks, but otherwise you can probably return to work within 2 weeks.
  13. its now been 4.5 years since I was sleeved. my high weight was 323 lbs. my goal weight was low 180's. I did reach goal weight but over the years I realized that my desired goal weight was too low for me. now for the last 2 years ive steadily maintained a weight in the mid 190's and that appears to be where im supposed to be and im happy with that weight. today 10/1/17 I weight 195 lbs. I exercise 3-4 times a week and my choice of exercise is running. I will also be running the 2018 boston marathon and im so excited about being able to run this historic race! im running it for the jimmy v foundation for cancer research and ive committed to raising $6000 which is no easy task. if any of you have ever been affected by this terrible illness feel free to click the link after this post and make a 100% tax deductible donation to the jimmy v foundation for cancer research. every dollar donated goes to research. you will be supporting my run and a cause that affects everyone as everyone knows someone that has been affected by cancer. as far as my eating, I still have to be very mindful of what I put in my mouth. I can eat much more today than I could 2 years ago but still no where near what I could eat before having the surgery. hope everyone on their journey is doing well and feel free to ask any questions. im also attaching my before pic and a few current pics taken last week. have a great day! heres my donation link for anyone willing to support this wonderful cause: http://jimmyv.convio.net/site/TR/Endurance/General?px=1409952&pg=personal&fr_id=1370
  14. Has it really been 4 years? It's hard to believe we've come so far from each of our starting points. Each of us has had setbacks and success in this journey. We've shared our stories and have gotten support and given support to each other. Although we may not come back as often as we would like, but when we do it's as if we didn't miss a beat. I too am 20lbs from goal right now. I still sabortage myself when I get within 5 - 10 lbs of goal. But I have not given up hope that one day I'll get there and so have you. Ms. Husker, go to this website, Eat Right 4 Your Type. com. And if you can get the book, by Peter D'Adamo from the library. This book is about health by your blood type. I started reading it after reading his Geno-Type Diet. I find both were very helpful in relation to some of my health issues. I'm going to get his cookbook although there are a lot, and I mean alot of recipes on his website. My testimony to his book was when I wanted to go vegetarian for the new year. I started eating bean for morning snack and eating the alternative meat products. 2/3 weeks into this and I was having trouble raising my left arm. I had already began cutting out the Beans and meat alternatives. But in reading his book and reviewing my history of foods I've eaten, I saw a pattern I had set for myself. I'll stop here, but try and get the Eat Right 4 Your Type and incorporate some of your blood type into your daily living. By reading his book, I realized I am wheat and gluten intolerant. Not that I can't eat it, but should eliminate, avoid and or limit it in my diet. Along with some foods that has been causing my health problems. It's too early to tell if I see and feel a difference, but I'm going to give it a 30 day trial according to his cookbook. Well, I'll stop here this is a long winded one. Let me know if you decided to get the book. This goes also to others as well.

    My story...

@@Chi2Htown, I live in the Chicago area as well. This forum was a Godsend while I was going through the process. I binge read for three months before surgery, I even went back and read post from years ago. Educate yourself. The sleeve is permanent so you want to make sure you have no regrets. This was the absolute best decision I made. I honestly never had one second regret, even immediately after surgery when it was hard because I knew it would get better. I'm 52 & wish I had done this 10 years ago. Wishing you the very best possible outcome.

  18. Two weeks ago I took my grandkids to the beach for the day. This meant I went to the gym at 6 as usual, then into work until 10, then I picked up the kids and took them to the beach. I walked up and down the beach twice, played in the tide pools, had lunch and then back down the beach, and finally home. Somewhere during this process I was sitting in the sun, relaxing for a minute and started to reflect on my life today vs. 6 years ago before I was banded. Just 6 years ago I would have either gone to work or gone with the kids somewhere- not enough energy for both. Four years ago I would have gone to the gym in the morning and probably just taken the kids to the beach. Two years ago I would have gone to the gym, come into work for a bit and taken the kids to the beach. I would have never made it up and down the beach twice. I would have been exhausted by the time we had returned once from the tide pools. This time, approaching my 6th year with a lap band and at 61 years old, I went to the gym, then worked for 2 hours, then took the kids to the beach and walked back and forth on the beach, in out of the surf and the tide pools, up to the restaurant and back, and still had energy to spare. Life is a miracle, my grandkids are blessings, and every day I am grateful for my lap band. If you ‘re early in your journey ,take a moment to think about where you would like to be a year from now. Those who have been on this journey for a while ,take a moment and reflect on what something you are doing today would have been like before you were banded. Let’s share. You can read about this day and my past 6 years banded at Sandi's Banded Living — My Lapband Weight Loss Success Story Please let me know if you find it useful.
  19. I am planning a removal in 10 days. Any thoughts?
  20. I think some surgeons are not as thurough going thru the post-op or pre-op. And sometimes they tell you in the very first meeting, and it might be months before you have the surgery, so by then, if your like me, you have forgotten most of it. My surgeon is having me attend a THREE hour seminar 10 days before my surgery, then I have to meet with him again for a 30 min consultation to go over the changes again. Now, I've already been over this with him before, but I think he just want to drill it into my thick head. I have a full day of appointments on the 8th of January so I'm taking off the entire day, just to make all the pre-op appointments. But, im sure even with all these appointments, I still have questions.......But I think its good he is being so thorough with me and his other patients on what to expect. Seriously, the best advice I've received though was on this board....
  21. Got banded yesterday by Dr Rich DiCicco at Pasco Regional in Dade City, FL. Was ready to leave hospital an hour after I came around, but they kept me till I could take the second round of Antibiotics. I really expected much more pain, did not even get the gas pains I had been warned about. No pain to speak of, just a little tenderness. What a great job this team did for me, thanks so much. Today I had issues trying to drink stuff that might contain calories, so i probably maxed out at 100 calories for the day .. must try do better tomorrow. I did learn (thru this site) that my hiccups were caused by being full. I thought it was thru eating cold popsicles, so I tried to correct the situation by drinking room temperature Water. Did not help. Good luck in your decision - hope it goes as smoothly as mine. THANKS DOC - GREAT JOB THERE> Kevin

    GET MOVING!!

hey My name is Traci, and I have been where you are, and it truly sucks ass. In Feb and March of this year I was the same way. It killed me to get up and get off the couch. I would rather of stayed in bed than I would walk around the house. The more I didnt want to do anything, the more I gorged on food. I drank over 24 Mt dews a week, fountain drinks every single day...32 o's...and just really didnt care becuase what the heck, I was already fat, what was a few more bites or one more drink??? I started my weight loss journey In April. Got approved and was within 1 month away from surgery....I was sooooo ready. The start of May I bought a single speed bike from Walmart, and started riding 2-3 miles. Damn, it use to just kill me..... Once I was approved, I went in for my surgery consult, and immediatly started the liquid diet....DAMN...that was the hardest thing.....I cheated, but not in big ways...Like I would have some lunch meat or something...but no huge things. My surgery went so well, and I was determend to make this work. At first there is not real tightness in the band, so it is definatly will power to stay motivated. The first few months I lost 10-13 lbs each month. The past few, I am down to 6-8. It stinks. I started cyclying more, and bought a hybrid bike with gears, and have been riding usually on the weekends anywhere from 15 miles to 42. I just completed my first 40 mile ride last weekend.... Some days it seems like it is harder than others, and I slip and drink a soft drink or 2, or eat something I shouldnt...but............. Last night I was able to go into a NORMAL store and buy a dress.... It was a awesome feeling and wonderful motivator. Dont give up on yourself......Just know that it is normal to eat allot before the procedure is done, it is what they call last supper syndrome, and allot of people do it everyday until there surgery. IT IS NORMAL> As far as being tired....that will get better....try walking just a little....any little bit will make you feel so much better....and soon, you will be walking miles. Please feel free to PM me, or email me any time if you would like to talk. I am from Indiana... Traci

  25. Ok, I wasn't required to start my protein diet until this week because my surgery is scheduled 10/01. However, I was thinking I was doing myself a favor and starting it a week early. Well, I have lost 5 lbs. but I want to eat and now I can't. What was I thinking???
