  1. First time poster, long time lurker A bit about myself, I was sleeved in 2014 at 136kg and manged to get down to 96kg before finally falling pregnant [yay!]. Now I am 1 year postpartum and my weight is rapidly spiraling out of control again The head hunger and being home all day with bubs is my biggest problem, I graze ALL day on sugary quick grab foods. Having a little one I find myself tired and am seriously lacking motivation with jumping on the weight loss band wagon as my son is my first priority. I've always had a larger sleeve than most and was able to eat half a sandwich, now after being pregnant I can eat a whole sandwich no worries. Being pregnant was my downfall when it came to the weight gain as I was hypoglycemic and had to eat every hour, plus bubs was draining me of everything which is why I was constantly hungry and I simply cannot break that habit now. I don't believe I have stretched my stomach but I like to hear from other sleevers that have a similar story to myself and that can reassure me that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

    Gastric sleeve

I have not but only about 2 months out of surgery. Steroids will be the culprit to that weight gain I believe. I would suggest quit eating chocolate and bisquits (Are you talking about what we Yanks call cookies?)
  3. I have been banded since October of 2007. I think that I am qualified to answer this question because I have not lost 100% of my excess weight. I am not a size 2 like I hoped I would be. Expectation not met. I won't make excuses, I eat right, and I exercise. But my weight loss has a serious twist: I am bipolar, and as such I take a massive amount of weight gaining medication. (6000 pills a year.) Having said that I am totally pleased with my weight loss. I continue to lose weight, but it is VERY slowly. (1 pound a month, and I earn that pound!!) My surgeon is thrilled, because I have managed to lose 71% of my excess weight. Right on!!!
  4. I quit on Super Bowl Sunday, 1985. I had a horrible sore throat and it hurt to swallow, much less smoke. I thought, I wonder how long I can stay off cigarettes? The answer is 29 years and counting. It wasn't easy when the sore throat cleared up. Habits were hard to break. Everything I did with a cigarette in my hand had to be relearned. This was back in the day when you could still smoke at your desk at work. Driving, out to dinner, out to a bar, watching tv, you name it. It hits you like a ton of bricks how often you reach for a cigarette. Mine was cold turkey from about two packs a day at age 23. I started in high school. My high school actually had a smoking lounge for students. I had never really tried to cut back or quit before then, but I was getting winded on stairs, etc., and it wasn't all from my weight. Once I quit, it only took a few weeks to begin to see the benefits. My sense of smell came back, things tasted better. I don't recall a big weight gain, but I was already obese. I had dreams occasionally for years that I had sneaked a cigarette. I'd wake up sweating. One thing I know is that quitting cigarettes was a cakewalk compared to quitting overeating. I've done both in my life and the food was much harder. I'm proud of being smoke free and now on a journey to healthy weight as well. You can do it. Think of the years added to your life the moment you quit. You will have a cleaner car, a cleaner home, your coat won't smell. If you can change your eating, you can do this. Good luck.
  5. I was banded on Thursday. The whole time I was in the hospital, I felt great! Just sore from the band area and incision site. When I got home? Not so much. I've been having a tough time with pain, also a hard time getting liquids in. Forced down 2 Protein shakes over the course of the day yesterday in very tiny sips. Took 2 hours to drink one. I am having chest pain when I swallow, and I think it's just because it's so tight in there from the swelling. As for the 10 lb weight gain, I weighed myself when I got home too and it said I weighed 6 lbs more. I weighed again this morning, and it's back to what I weighed the morning of my surgery. I think it's Water weight from the IV... they really keep you "juiced up" in the hospital so you don't dehydrate. Give it a couple days and weigh again. You KNOW you didn't gain weight during that time... just let the swelling go down and you'll be fine! Good luck!
  6. I didn't feel so hot after either. And the weight gain is because of the IV. It took about a week and the scale really started to move down. If you are worried check with you doc. It might help you rest easier.

    Diarrhea???

LMAO....I think maybe that explains it then...I'm not sure if my doctor had 4400 calories running thru my veins but I considering the weight gain I wouldn't doubt it one bit. Thanks for the info. I go back in a week for a follow up..maybe I'll ask him about it then. Linda
  8. Having suffered with depression since I was 15, I can safely say this is why you have stalled. Also some of your medications may have an impact on that. When depressed, your body only knows you are ill, and will cope and try to help you by slowing your metabolism. This usually results in weight gain but because you had surgery, is instead, storing your calories. Enjoy what you have lost thus far and when your mood lightens, and it will, the weight will come off!!
  9. I haven't weighed myself yet since being back from the hospital b/c I'm so bloated and my belly feels so huge. They told me at the hospital that they had given me more IV than needed because they assumed I wouldnt be able to get all my fluids in at first. (They were right, i feel like ive been drinking pretty often but am still at half of my liquid requirement).@QueenCity, I wouldnt worry about the weight gain. I'm sure they did something similar to you and you'll drop it in no time. I was able to go #2 twice already today, which I think is a good thing given that my doc was worried about constipation. It helped with the bloating, but i still can't for the life of me burp or pass gas. I never wanted to so bad in my life!! Lol I also have this weird "depression" in my belly right around the belly button incision (photo attached). It looks bigger in person. It wasn't there before surgery and it's freaking me out that it will stay this way (the nurse assured me it wouldnt). Have any of you experienced similar?
  10. Hello everyone My surgery was scheduled for tomarrow and I just got a call from my surgeon's office that my HCG levels were 25000 and there's a chance Iam pregnant. So I went and did the test and to my surprise it is positive! Although I am happy but I am so worried about the weight gain during pregnancy as I already am 221# and 5'2. Plus I have to do all the pre-req for the surgeries all over again next year after the baby and iam worried if the insurance will approve me then or not. Just wanted to see if anyone here ever went through this or something similar.? Oh and I was on the preop clear liquid diet for 5 days already. happy and nervous <-- thats me right now Alisha Sent from my S Galaxy using VST
  11. Get your notes out from surgery and go back to basics, get an app for tracking food - like Baritastic or myfitnesspal. Your surgeon's office can help find a therapist, or just make a dietician/checkup appointment. Don't be embarrassed - just start. Some physicians prescribe weight loss meds or other appetite suppressants for 3 months to get you jump started. Do whatever you have to in order to start being accountable. Dump the junk out, pour dish soap on it in the trash - you already bought it, so the money is gone don't let it cost you weight gain too. Then go shopping for some protein and vegetables, get a new fancy water bottle.....you can do it, you HAVE done it before.

4 months out and weight gain

So, TMI question, but is it your time of the month? That can often lead to not only additional Fluid, but also fluid retention. Also I find that if I eat Soup, popcorn, or something extra salty, it has a lot of sodium which inevitably causes me to gain at least a pound or two the day after. Also, if I do a heavy lifting session, my muscles are swollen and I gain weight the next day purely from Water, as opposed to having actually gained any muscle weight. This is why I weigh myself every single day because I know exactly where my weight should be and if for some reason I gain, I can immediately start on the path to fixing it. I also can look back (I have written my weight down everyday) and I can see that, ok I gained 3 pounds one day, but it was gone a few days later, or ooh that was a long stall but not nearly as long as I thought. Don't freak out over a weight gain if it only lasts a day or two- sometimes our bodies inexplicably retain water and naturally process it out.

    pre-op

No way that 1 cup of yogurt + some brown sugar and cocoa caused a 5lb weight gain, most of that is likely water if you stuck to your diet otherwise. Work closely with the nutritionist at your surgeon’s office to find a plan that is sustainable for you and hang in there. I have never eaten as little as 10g carb/day during this entire process and have been very successful. I think the lowest I ever did was 25g carb/day and that was quite short term. Now that I am nearing maintenance my guideline, per my surgeon’s office, is 70-80g protein/day and to just keep my carbs lower than my protein. It gets better!

    I Think I Have A Hormone Problem

I'd definitely ask for a pregnancy test, just in case. Then, if that is negative, I'd start exploring other options like thyroid issues (because of the weight gain) and premenopause. Good luck!

    Citalophram (sp)

I was on it before surgery and continued on it after surgery. You are talking about celexa correct? That's generic drugs's name. I know it can cause weight gain so they will be monitoring me as I get further out. Sent from my iPhone using RNYTalk

What have you gained on a binge?

Haven't binged, not a binger - but a single binge is not going to do much to you . Any weight gain is likely from the break in ketosis, and should come off as soon as your ketosis is - reinstated. Tomorrow is always another opportunity. So is right now. (Meaning - the "tomorrow" syndrome kills plans, the "right now" doesn't).
  17. Speaking for myself - to manage this as a permanent change, I must use the scale. What I have been dealing with is rehabilitating my relationship to the scale. To effectively manage the disease (obesity) that I have, I must deal rigorously what the facts - calorie intake, protein intake, the quality of the nutrients and most fundamentally my weight. In my job I use statistics rigorously to deal with my performance and the performance of my team. This is no different. I weigh myself daily at the same time (after I pee and brush my teeth). I record what it says - no drama, this morning 296 is just what it says. I have lost weight many times in my life - losing weight has never been my problem. I have discovered that certain things impede weight loss for me (insufficient water intake, processed foods of any kind, carbohydrates, insufficient fat in my diet). I am at the beginning of my VSG journey, so I will see if that still applies and rigorously tracking weight and food/water intake will give me access to tweaking my diet in the future. Every time I have lost weight in the past I hit a point where the hunger, cravings, etc. begin to rage and I did not control them. I believe VSG will help me manage that. I suspect that the people who are effective at long term weight loss/management learn from trial and error what works best for their body. There are people who do better on lower fats and people who do better on higher fats. Our basal metabolism differs. There are things that may trigger fluid retention or weight gain. But tweaking and discovering what is going to work and be effective (as with anything in life) requires a powerful and empowering relationship to the facts. So my recommendation is different from others - don't resist the scale. Reform your relationship to the scale. Get what the scale says as nothing other than a fact and then look at what's happening with your diet, is there anything to tweak and most importantly, look at trends and patterns not day by day. The day to day probably doesn't tell us much. We are in this for the long haul. I used to avoid the scale - now I bring discipline to recording daily what is happening. It doesn't mean I always like it :-)

    Body Image Issues

I had the opposite happen after my rapid weight gain. I would pass my reflection and not recognize myself as the heavy, bloated-faced person staring back. I cried. A lot. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Protein Causing Weight Gain

Some protein drinks are high in sugar for good reason - the resultant insulin spike helps in transport of the protein to the muscle cells to start repairing them after a workout. This is a good thing for those who are working to build muscle mass but they aren't the appropriate thing for most of us during weight loss when we are simply trying to maintain what muscle mass that we have. Check the label and look for ones that are low in sugar. As others have suggested, log what you are eating so that you can see where problems may lie. Some minor weight fluctuation (including minor gains) is to be expected as we lose due to changes in hydration and water retention, and there are lots of things that influence that - salt in diet, TOM, glycogen/carb depletion, etc., but 12 lb is a lot from that source. To the OP - was your early protein drink trial run in addition to what you were already eating, or were they meal substitutions? In our early stages, it's difficult to get enough calories in to create any genuine weight gain, but there are many reasons for stalls, and the classic third week stall is one that most experience irrespective their dietary phase.
  21. sugar free popsicles are a life saver! Also the first few days I brought home medicine cups from the hospital and the goal was to try and drink one every 15 minutes. wait a few days on protein drinks if you need to as they feel heavier. I also found that the low calorie gatoraide was easier on my sleeve than water, so experiment with fluids. Weight gain is fluid and normal. Welcome to sleevedom!

    Fatty Liver

I had a fatty liver. My enzynes were sky high as well. After weightloss thanks in part to diet change and then my band, my levels are back to a normal range. My family physician had me count my carbs (10 a day) and watch my fatty food intake. (Greasy fried foods). My fatty liver was associated with excess weight gain over the years.

    Fatty Liver

I'm 55 and have a "fatty" liver. It showed up at one of those supermarket blood checks for cholesterol, was a freebie. What a shocker when he told me I had high levels of enzymes and I needed to be checked. I might have a cocktail every now and then, but I'm not a drinker, so my PCP ran every test for liver disease and it came back a "fatty" liver. I think it's usually caused by rapid weight gain. Last visit it was almost back to normal, thanks to my band.

    Struggling

If you can't keep healthy foods down, and are resorting to slider foods, then you are likely too tight. You need to get back into your surgeon and talk to him. Contrary to popular belief, too tight isn't good. As you're finding out, it leads to weight gain because most slider foods are very high calorie. People are shocked when they have a little Fluid removed, they can eat healthy again, and start losing weight. Go see your surgeon, his job is to help you through times like this, but he can't do that if you don't let him. Best wishes.
