Wow wonderful news congrats!! As a revision patient I'll say I definitely don't regret my sleeve one bit! All the best on your insurance approval. Remember, if they're taking to long to give you an answer - the squeaky wheel always gets the grease.
  2. So I had a mini tummy tuck which then turned into a super extended tummy tuck. My belly button was moved and my doc cut off a lot of skin almost 365 degrees around my body (did not have my muscles touched). I am now 10 weeks post op a revision on my front and 3 weeks post op the extension on my back. Anyways I am starting back at the gym and tried to do some sit ups. I got to about 15 ( full sit up, lie down not crunches) and my lower stomach hurt. It felt like I was really stretching the skin near the scar. I actually stopped and didnt try to do more. My question is, has anyone had any problems doing sit ups after a tummy tuck? Im so excited to be back at the gym and used to do 150 sit ups a day ( 50 full sit ups and then 100 motorcycle way) but now with this uncomfortable feeling, I wonder if I could somehow cause a problem with the incision or....?

Has anyone had the lapband twice?

True revision surgeons are refusing to reband or reposition a band. The problem is (came out of a FL convention about 3 months ago) that when you replace a band or surgically reposition a band you stand about a 70% chance of a slip in the near future after the 2nd surgery. I have had a band and I have a sleeve. If you have any questions I'm happy to answer.

    Port revision

I had a port revision because my port flipped over after 2-1/2 years of no problems. I didn't even know it until my surgeon and her NP began having trouble accessing my port. My surgeon didn't know what could have caused it to flip, partly because she's not the one who did my band placement. She says it could have been a failed suture, or stress on the abdominal fascia during a workout. Anyway, after the revision it stayed put and since she relocated my port deeper (so I no longer had a bulge there) and away from my waist (where it used to rub against my clothes, kitchen counter, etc.) I was happy with the results. I can't comment on the 1% chance of needing a port revision because I'm not a statistician or medical professional, and not inclined to believe statistics anyway (a boss once told me, "figures can lie, and liars can figure"), and can't comment on whether your port is pressing on a nerve (never heard of that), but I've encountered quite a few people whose port flipped. I understand why you're not feeling too swift about this turn of events, but a port revision is not the worst thing that could happen to a WLS patient. Hard as it may be to imagine, a year from now that revision will be a distant memory.

Is it dumping or just upset stomach

I developed allergies to foods and lactose intolerance after both of my surgeries. After my sleeve, I developed a NASTY shellfish allergy and lactose intolerance. After my revision to bypass, I developed an allergy to peanuts and an allergy to the surgical glue they used. Surgery can do weird things to the body. Major surgery like this throws the body WAY out of whack.
  6. Hello group! I was banded on May 19, 2004 and have lost 125lbs. I am currently at goal and am now thinking about plastics. I will have to self-pay for my plastics because I don't meet the criteria for medical necessity. That means I have lots of options in selecting a surgeon. Here's my question. Is is unwise to have my TT done in a hospital that doesn't have a Bariatric program? I'm concerned about having to have my port moved by a plastic surgeon. (and mine will HAVE to be moved... I can already see it poking out when I look at my profile in the mirror). When a band patient has a TT in the hospital where I had my band placed, the bariatric surgeon comes down and does the port revision. However, the plastic surgeon in that hospital is the MOST expensive in the area... sheeesh. Do plastic surgeons have the expertise to move a port? Is it wise to even consider going to another hospital to save a few thousand dollars? I would love your input! Thanks, Julie banded 5/19/05 296/170/170

    It's Oh So Quiet ...

Revision from band to bypass...get those liquids in! Makes all the difference in the world!!! Good luck, hope they figure out your numbers and get you straightened out
  8. Thank you, I had the bypass in 2001, & I've had lots of problems At that time it was fairly new. Just had a revision Monday not by choice but a have to case. They had to remove lots of scar tissue & part of my stomach. I feel so bad any suggestions on how to start feeling better. I know it's early

Ok Time To Be Real With Me..

For most people, no it really isn't that bad. I had two c-sections and this was a breeze compared to them, IMO! However, if you have a complication, it can seem like the world is ending. One thing I have noticed is that every time I'm stunned by someone's complaints about pain, nausea, etc, it turns out that person has some kind of complication. The complication rate is very low, but it's sure painful when you're the one who has that complication. The other thing that could be going on is that your friend could have a very low pain tolerance. There are people who can't handle much pain at all without feeling like they are dying. If she's young, has no previous medical procedures, or has never had a child, your friend may truly be feeling as if the pain is overwhelming. I've unofficially noticed that people who are older seem to have less pain with VSG. Maybe that's luck and maybe it's because we've dealt with so much more than the younger folks. Don't let your friend's misery become your misery. Just because she's having a tough time does NOT mean that you will have a tough time if you're considering revision to the sleeve. Oh, and from what I understand, the pain from a tummy tuck is way worse than the pain from the sleeve as well!

    Flipped Port

Don't feel guilty - I can't imagine anything you would have done to cause the port to flip. Good luck with your revision!
  12. Congrats! And thank you for posting this. I am worried constantly about my weight loss being slower since I'm a revision (I also have PCOS with Insulin resistance) and I find myself frequently comparing my weight loss to others as well as to when I was loosing weight with the band. Especially since I also find myself able to eat more than others seem to be able to. I guess I need to back off my own back.
  13. This topic and discussion are exactly why I joined this site. Everyone is so encouraging and ready to help. I loved reading your story and your information is wonderful to hear 8 weeks out from my revision surgery. Thank you so much for sharing and congratulations!!!!!
  14. What are you nutz? LOL!! Of course reschedule that surgery. I had port revision surgery and although I was better able to move around than when I had the initial surgery I can't imagine going on a honeymoon after that. No making whoopee!! No swimming!! No swinging from the rafters!! POSTPONE that surgery. Enjoy your honeymoon and then get it done. Too much to deal with pre wedding to then have to deal with recovering from a surgery too.

    July 31st!

YES! Lol definitely, I think everyone feels like this. Our stats are somewhat similar although I don't know how tall you are. I'm 5'2 and am at about 270 now which is the highest I've ever been..yikes! I am a revision from a sleeve to a bypass so have a little bit of prior knowledge pre-op on what to expect. I had major complications with the sleeve in 2012 and haven't been able to tolerate solid food since the surgery so have been on liquids/super mushy wet food for almost 2 years. So, I'm REALLY extra excited because I'm hoping my pain will stop after this surgery! I'm on August 1st so we are right next to each other and should try to keep up post-op to compare experience. I know we will both make it through these next two weeks but it'll be tough to concentrate on anything until the surgery, I'm especially having trouble sleeping because I'm so anxious/nervous mine is mostly due to the fear of this not working and making my current condition worse. I take Lortab which is the liquid Vicodin they give you post-op every day just to be able to swallow enough liquids to stay out of the hospital even though I'm vitamin and protein deficient and I can't stay hydrated enough to keep from getting kidney infections so I'm crossing my fingers that I'll have some relief after this surgery. Knock on wood, but I think I'm due for some good luck!
  16. I have a friend who just had the sleeve as well as her younger daughter. They both have about 150 at LEAST to lose and they are first time WLS.They needed to do something.Great Losing weight ...ok.She told me she made some mistakes by waiting to long to eat on several occasions....ok I see in the future where this is going.I have a lap band...I thought it was less invasive back in 2004.Fast forward...I slime and vomit all the time.My port site protrudes and is painful and I Abe GERD and my esophagus has damage...did I mention I have struggled initially lost a minimal amount of weight ..50 pounds when I needed to lose 100.,,I am now an involuntary bulimic because of the band and its complications...trying hard to get a revision to the RNY
  17. When I originally went to see my doctor, my BMI was 49; I'm 5'7" and I weighed 315 lbs. He told me that really the only serious option for me was the gastric bypass. He said that a person with as much weight to lose as I have does best with the gastric bypass, because it provides the most weight loss. I have heard other doctors say the same thing. Second, if you read these boards you will find many people who have had revisions from other WLS (both band and sleeve) to the gastric bypass because of various problems with those other forms. I decided I only want one WLS ever. Third, as others on this thread have said, the gastric bypass is no more "radical" than a sleeve; both will require Vitamins for the rest of your life, both involve significant changes to your stomach, etc. The gastric bypass provides weight loss because of malabsorption, restricted pouch size, and possibly reduction in Ghrelin (the hormone that triggers hunger). One of the side effects many gastric bypass patients experience is dumping syndrome when either poor foods (high fat, high sugar, various other bad things) are consumed or too much food is consumed or "stuck" (often because food has not been chewed sufficiently). Although the symptom is unpleasant, it acts as a "teaching tool" to change bad behaviors, which is a very positive outcome. In the end you will have to make the decision on your own. You are the one who will have to live your life with whatever surgery you choose. The people on this forum are pro-gastric bypass, since this is a gastric bypass forum. If you are really leaning toward the sleeve, you might want to go on the sleeve boards and ask around there about that surgery, to get a different slant on this issue. Good luck and best wishes on whatever choice you make.
  18. One thing I would caution you about regarding the sleeve - it is not less invasive, even though that seems to be a big reason some people choose it. Yes, your intestines are not re-routed, but hey, most of your stomach is actually removed for good! you can't get that back if there are problems. With GB, everything is still there and can theoretically be revised back to normal (I think I've seen it called a takedown) For me, I'm not a huge volume eater; it's more about eating the junk - the fast food, the carbs, etc. I can stick to low carb for awhile but then go off-track and lose my momentum, get all the cravings back, etc. So I have chosen bypass b/c I need the possibility of dumping to keep me straight, at least long enough for me to learn better longterm habits. Just my 2 cents.
  19. Leroy Mann This is absolutely how I feel.I already chose a half ass lapband that Has caused me pure misery since 2004 not to mention .my teeth and gums are screwed and I have severe acid reflux and port pain...and...I am the vomit queen!!!!!The biggest reason is that I only initially lost about 40 pounds and have really struggled.....I am as fat ass as ever and miserable...seeking a revision to what I should have done in the first place!!!bypass!!!!and for anyone who wants to raise the ...."re routing invasive euphemism"...spare me...my esophagus is screwed up and my stomach is beat up and the amount of slime and vomit is sickening...port pain...please...I would be crazy to subject my very lapband abused stomach to cutting 85% out....I am lapband miserable and in pain as I type....mmm....silicone...,should of thought about that before I developed breast cancer....just saying.....,,silicone...ok..

    I want off this ride!

@@parisshel The fills never hurt me (even through the layers of scar tissue) and I was never offered a pain med for it. Didn't even know that it was available! A band patient will always have to research new Drs in any area they move too. They might have to end up driving hundreds of miles for a Dr. willing to service them (an existing band patient). Many don't want to service them. And here is another thing to consider - it is not permanent! It will have to come out eventually. It is a hard thing to accept when you just get banded, because you are still excited and it is still working for you. My mother had her's out after 3 years. Just found out my band is not in the right place, so that might help speed the revision along (after 7.5 years I was lucky!) Why invest in a procedure that doesn't have a good track record? My Dr. doesn't even perform bands anymore or even offer a monthly support group for bandsters. We are lumped together with the other WLS groups.

    I want off this ride!

I get it! I am currently trying the second time for a revision after a rejection last year. Just remember that its a journey. Because of your acid reflux you might not be a good fit for the sleeve.
  22. Dave, The plication is much like a sleeve without the removal of the stomach or stapling. It is a backup in case I have problems with the band. Also, the "sleeving" has a faster weight loss result. I end up losing the weight faster than with solely the band, and have the benefit of a fill if I have stalled weight loss or the plication is unsuccessful. Over time many sleeve patients have a larger stomach capacity and are able to eat more than they should. Should this happen, the band can be used to correct intake. Plication also is an added reinforcement to band slippage - they are MUCH more likely to stay in place if the stomach is plicated. My surgeon loves this surgery and has had excellent results with the patients who have had it. I feel like I'm gonna be under the knife anyway, why not have some extra reinforcement? Since reading the VGS boards, I've also seen several ppl who have had to remove their band for a variety of reasons and have had to wait several months to get back in to be sleeved. If I do have to have the band removed (which I don't foresee), I won't have to wait months on end to have a revision surgery, it'll already be done! How scary is it to thin k of losing you band and gaining all that weight back waiting for surgery!? I'd be so mad!

    Starting over with 2nd Band

Hi Trisha! I read you post and can completely relate. I also just found out I had a slip that can not be fixed without surgery. I am in a lot of pain and have been scheduled to have it fixed on the 22nd. I hope I can last that long. I had thought about having it revised to the sleeve but I am not sure if my insurance will even cover that. I have an appointment with the surgeon today so I guess I will find out. I wish you the best of luck and hope we can keep in touch. Trisha (also my name;)
  24. Marie, Yes I did have to stay overnight with the revision/rebanding. I am getting stronger every day. My doc allowed me to advance to full liquids now so I can drink some Protein shakes (a little at a time) so that gives me more energy. I am still very sore and it is just as sore as it was the first time around. I hope that goes away soon, but I know it will just take time to heal. The sinus drainage is better. I am so excited about that. I take the claritin nightly and it seems to work better than taking it first thing in the morning. Thanks for asking. Just to clear things up, I only had band slippage, not erosion at all. Take care and good luck to us all!
