    Sleeve or band

First off...WOW how utterly scary to have gone through that. Glad it all worked out. Based on the reviews of those that have had it, seems all have had to do revision. My friends all have done sleeve and one bypass. She says skip the band and sleeve and do bypass. I'm just afraid that I'm not big enough for bypass. I'm 5'3 and I'm a little over 100 pounds from what is normal. So I'm thinking sleeve will be perfect. Sent from my SM-G935T using the BariatricPal App
  4. I had sleeve to RNY revision on 10/21. I have lost 57lbs. My recovery was more difficult 2nd surgery, but I don't regret it for a minute. Love my bypass. I will be 6 months out on the 21st and hope to be 60+ lbs down

    Sleeve or band

CrissyCakes, Just shy of 10 years with my band....I lost 132 pounds and then my band slipped. No reason....just slipped and then I developed this left shoulder pain, intermittent at first and then constant. I would like to tell you I am a nurse. Please realize all medical devices have a life of 10 - 20 years. More like about 12.... My original surgeon said that people go along with no problems and then....BOOM....band slips, no reason, they just slip! (He was one of the first trained and doing them here on the West Coast.) They aren't even really doing them anymore. Please listen to us that have gone before you. My band was very little effort I hit my sweet spot on my 1st post op visit and you can count on one hand how many fills I had, and only 1 unfil EVER in 10 years..... SO BACK TO THE PAIN IN MY SHOULDER(like GAS pains).....My lap band to sleeve turned into a 5 1/2 hour procedure with my precious LAP-BAND adhered to my spleen and liver and my spleen tore while removing my LAP-BAND and LUCKILY there was no permanent damage. I am now 5 weeks post op and my pain in my shoulder is gone(YAY!) it got better everyday until it was gone. TRUST ME 10 years ago I was sitting where you are...Thinking that will NEVER happen to me, I don't want my guts rearranged, etc, etc. ANOTHER thing you need to consider, is NO ONE but GOD himself can tell you how your body will respond to the the foreign body the LAP-Band being introduced into your body! I LOVED my BAND and was a PRO BANDER until March 1st, 2016 at 3:32 in the afternoon. Please don't do that to yourself. Pick the Sleeve or RouxNY! My port doesn't hurt and my shoulder doesn't hurt. Even though my body is still healing. I didn't realize how much pain I was dealing with on a daily basis from my port and my band. Don't choose the band!. What is wild is the GUILT i had about revising my ELECTIVE BARIATRIC surgery! I am so glad I stuck with my surgery date....who knows when my band would have torn from my spleen, or liver and I would have probably bled to death... GLAD I REVISED. Oh yeah I had bad GERD! Almost none since my Sleeve.

Surgery woes: Grandpa begged me not to have the surgery

Awee sorry to hear that . family could be worse than a stranger. It can be alot of things maybe they are just to scared or this is how they deal with the fear .... My friend /supervisor supports me all the way cause she knows a pack of wild horses couldn't stop me if they tried. that is what she always say to me. as long as you did your research and you feel comfortable you do you... another reason not to tell many people. on tuesday when i went April 5 to have my surgery (revision ) band to sleeve my husband was taking me and guess who popped up at my house at 8 am ... yes my mom who i didnt tell because i dont want to hear her mouth and for her to be worried. so i was rushing out and she asked if i was leaving for work so early i said No no work going to get epidural shot in my back she knows of my back problem so she is use to that. Yup did not tell her.. Unfortunately i didn't get the sleeve done cause my band had slipped and doc said that he wanted to let my stomache heal cause it was bruised and too close to my esophogus. so im scheduled for May 24 for the sleeve. he did take the band out. so just healing now.. sooooooo i already told my mom im going back may 24the for another set of shots and this time i might stay over. lololol whatever works. i usually tell her after i do things like liposuction, the band ect.. because again i did my research im very comfortable with my decision and my hubby is my support no matter what i do.. Where do you live. do you have friends that can come and get you. is there a bariatric group that you go to maybe someone there can help you out. if not girlll get in a cab and go home...dont sweat it. Im in Rockland County NY if you are around let me know.

    Hunger

Revised on 3/1/2016. Still on soft foods, but I feel less hungry as I get closer to regular consistency foods and do seem to do better with increased Protein. I was wondering if it is only revisers who feel hungry like this?
  8. @@j16 hang in there your time will eventually come just take this time to mentally prepare for all the life changes that need to made and make sure to do add much research as possible about both procedures after all the Doctor makes a suggestion but in the end is your body so the decision should be ultimately yours. I made the mistake of letting my surgeon choose my procedure and things didn't go so well because of other factors the Doctor never discussed with therefore ended up having to have a revision surgery anyway...... So be patient my friend and good luck on your journey
  9. Hi msmreed47, Welcome to the site. If you don't mind me asking why are you doing the revision? What are your stats?

    Sleeve or band

Sleeve! I had the band 5 years and had it removed due to complications. I was revised to sleeve 11 months ago and couldn't be happier! My biggest frustration with the lap band was the high maintenance that comes with it. As far as acid reflux, I did not have it with the band and now I have it with the sleeve. It's hard to say how your body will react regardless of which you choose. I take medication for the acid reflux and I'm fine. Good luck. jake

  13. Whoa! I know from my anatomy and physiology classes how hard (close to impossible) it is to fix a damaged spleen. My surgeon convinced me not to go with Lap-Band...he's put in 3-5 over the past year and removed/revised 20-30.
  14. I am in the same boat as you. I do not have a high bmi any more and have had all my fill out. I think I have an ulcer I am being treated with carafate . I need an endoscope too if not better in a month. I had an upper go with severe reflux. On 2 proton in every day and 1 Zantac and carafate. I want to be revised to sleeve but my insurance won't consider me because of low bmi. I paid cash for my band and it has done well until this last year. I have gained 18 pounds in 1 1/2 years. I was banded in July 2008. I was down to 158 but now back up to 176. I am so tired from lack of sleep. Some days I barely make it. I just want my stomach fixed come off all this medicine and get the sleeve but I will have to pay I am afraid. I have Humana insurance. Any one have this insurance? 15. Lap Band for 10 years, then developed slip and then "GAS" like pain in shoulder! I lost 132 pounds with my band and I LOVED it, until it slipped and a couple months after it slipped I developed a "Gas" like pain in my shoulder(you know like after your lap surgery) at first only after eating, by Thanksgiving it was pretty constant. That is when I decided to proceed with the conversion to a sleeve. I was sleeved on 3/1/2016. It was a 5 1/2 hour procedure because my little fried the LAP Band had attached to my spleen and liver ( more so my spleen). I therefore ended up with a bruise on my spleen as well as my abdominal wall from the removal and repair of my spleen. It has been a slow recovery process. 4 days in the hospital and it took me 3 weeks to return to work and I am still pretty tired. I am so very happy to report that I no longer experience the pain in my shoulder and am enjoying soft foods. If you are reading this and are contemplating a LAP-BAND for whatever reason. DON'T DO IT! I was just like you reading people's post and thinking.......that will never happen to me. Here is the honest truth! I DID NOT EXPERIENCE THE ISSUES LIKE OTHER'S HAVE. I lost 132 pound in 5 years. I found my sweet spot and it was 9 years and my band slipped for no logical reason. In MY research and talking to my ORIGINAL SURGEON who was one of the first LAP-Band trained docs in the US. Reported to me that.....this is what they see. Somewhere between the 8 - 12 year mark the average being about 10 years, the bands just slip. Oh there are things you can control, your diet, your Water, how much you exercise, how much sleep you get........HERE IS THE BIG UNKNOWN! YOU CANNOT CONTROL HOW YOUR BODY WILL RESPOND TO THE FOREIGN BODY (THE LAP BAND_ IN YOUR BODY! ALSO medical devices only have a life of 10 - 12 years, so also keep that in mind. Please understand that I am a RN for almost 30 years. I read people's post very much the same way you are reading my post......That won't happen to me, I don't want my guts rerouted, I don't want 80% of my stomach removed...But I am here to tell you need to really evaluate how you eat, what you eat, and have a frank discussion with your surgeon about the Sleeve or the Bypass what would be the best option for you,and don't even discuss the band. SKIP the BAND! Its not worth the hassle! What is wild is I was feeling guilty, and almost put my surgery off. So glad I didn't and glad I did not damage my spleen and liver beyond repair! I am happy to report I am down 39 pounds and can't wait to start exercising for longer intervals. If you are considering a LAP BAND or are scared and revising like I was and would like to talk to me feel free to contact me. I will talk to you! Good LUCK and God Bless out there in Weight Loss Land!

    Sleeve or band

I definitely don't want to have to do that. I don't want complications and restrictions. I've already invested so much time trying to even get this done...I would be beyond mad if I follow his lead only to not reach my goal and still have to go back for revision. Sleeve or band

I had the band n lost very little weight in 7 years! I just had revision surgery (sleeve) on Jan 7 and now lost 13 pounds more than I lost with the band! Wish I would have done it sooner

    Antidepressants Post Op?

Of course the people who are posting in a "Gastric band to bypass revision" are people who had problems with the gastric band. That doesn't tell us anything about percentage of the total GB population who are/are not having problems. People who have no problems with their band are not going to see Dr. Rutledge complaining about their band, and probably are not posting in forums on revisions. The plural of "anecdote' is not "data".
  23. She did my sleeve in 2/2014, and I just found out she did NOT use a bougie but instead used an EGD scope AND and EGD just revealed she only removed approximately 20% of my stomach!! So besides being pissed I'm now having a revision to roux en y with a competent surgeon on 4/18/16 Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
