    Did I Blow It?

Six days post op seems a bit early for salad and chicken. It's always best to follow our surgeons post op diet. They do have our best interest in mind and know better than we do about what is going on with our healing tummies. Most surgeons recommend Miralax or stool softeners in the days and weeks after surgery to get the bowels moving. If you have any doubt, contact your team.

    Just ordered my shakes

Yes it makes perfect sense to me. You are getting yourself ready in everyway you can. Its like nesting when you are pregnant. I waited about 8 months for my surgery and I am not the most patient person. It was a trial. I wanted the day of surgery to come but had a 3 week pre op diet to do before it. Mine was non carb veg and skimmed milk. I worried about whether I could manage it but it had to be done or no surgery. I was bored of it by week 2 and I am a keen and adventurous cook. I couldn't wait till surgery day came and the diet ended. I hope you haven't bought too many shakes for after your surgery because your tastes may change drastically, mine did. You may need extra toothpaste and mouthwash for a few weeks. Good luck, you are almost at the starting post.
  3. Wow! That’s crazy! I had a barium swallow done last week but I don’t know the results of it. Yesterday I had am EDG. They did these because I’m nauseous all the time and they want to look at my stomach. The doctor mentioned yesterday that I might need a the one where they put that small thing through your nose and it goes down into your stomach and you have to drink when they get it down there to see if how you swallow is OK. That test was just awful! I think I’d rather have a colonoscopy🙃

    Day Of Surgery

Gosh Crisscat, That's a lot of people still to see. They really test your stamina. Everybody wants a bit of cash from your surgery money pot. Three tests for nicotine does seem excessive. Thankfully, my word that I had abstained for 12 years was enough for my surgeon. Good luck with your journey
  5. So my 1 week pre op liquid diet starts April 26th (surgery is May 3rd). Just ordered protein shakes, protein flavored water, and protein smoothies. I ordered variety packs of everything. I got Fairlife shakes (10 pack), Premier shakes (15 pack), Designer Wellness smoothies (12 pack), and Protein 2o Electrolyte protein drinks (two 12 packs). I got them all on Amazon. This might sound really odd, but even though I have my surgery date already, there was something about ordering my shakes and drinks that just made everything feel REALLY real. Does that make sense? I'm more nervous about the liquid diet than I am about the actual surgery LOL

    Carbonated drinks

bypass patient here. We were also told never to drink carbonated drinks, but some surgeons are more strict about this than others. I've seen people on here who were told they could have them once they were a few months out, as long as the carbonation didn't bother their stomach. I've tried a couple of times - when I was about three years out, I think -- and the carbonation did bother my stomach. Plus I hadn't had diet soda in so long that it tasted like a bunch of chemicals to me. Ugh. So needless to say, I never went back.

    Did I Blow It?

seven lbs in two weeks is about average. I lost 16 lbs the entire first month, and I started at over 300 lbs. unless you're the size of someone on "My 600 lb Life", you're not going to drop 40 or 50 lbs the first month. Just based on hanging out on these boards for the last seven years, I'd say the average weight loss range for most of us "normal" WLS patients that first month is around 15-25 lbs. Yes - you'll find a few people who fall above or below that range, but I'd say a majority of us are somewhere in it. So at 7 lbs in two weeks, you're pretty normal... also, I don't know if you weighed yourself that first week, but a lot of leave the hospital a few lbs heavier than we did entering the hospital. It's because they pump you full of IV fluids while you're there. It can take a few days for it to work its way out of your system.

    Day Of Surgery

Well here I thought I only had a few things left before surgery May 3rd....wrong lol. I still have the following to complete. 1. I have to meet with the Dietician about the clear liquid diet 2 weeks before surgery 2. Diabetic education (I have Type II, controlled by limiting carbs. Im a high normal and sometimes alittle over high normal) Im on no meds 3. Need appts to meet with Pharmacy and Anesthesiologists team 4. Final appt with the Dr doing surgery 5. Need a blood test for nicotine (I havent smoked in over 21 years but still have to do it) this will be the 3rd one 6. Covid Test 2 days before surgery Anyone else have this type of schedule before surgery can be done? And here I was worried about what happens on surgery day but looks like I have other areas to complete before worrying about surgery day ha!

    Sleeve with high BMI

For myself I chose to do the sleeve over bypass. Mainly because I have 3 co workers who have had bypass, 2 males and 1 female. The 2 males are gaining their weight back they lost. They eat and drink pretty much what they want and are overeating again, They both went from a 4XL to XL and Im pretty sure they are both back in to a 2XL now 2 yrs post bypass. The one female coworker has had horrible hair loss (I guess I should say thinning hair) she is early 30s and has had back to back babies after her bypass. I do not believe she is back to her pre bypass weight but shes probably put 50-60 lbs back on. She just had a 3rd baby not long ago and has already scheduled to have her bypass redone or relooked at (honestly Im not sure what they do when you put alot of your weight back on) any way she has something scheduled for Nov 2022. I have another co worker who had a sleeve. She has done exceptionally well, she's lost 95-105 lbs since March of last year. Im not sure she is at her goal weight but she may be. The only thing she complained about was being hydrated enough. I guess she just couldnt get her fluids in and she battled being dehydrated alot. I know both surgery's are tools and if you dont stick to it then the above scenario's can happen. I felt the sleeve could be the best option for me. I am satisfied with my decision and am currently pending surgery in about 3 weeks. I am alittle uneasy, nervous and maybe even alittle scared but I know thats my food addict self trying to talk me out of this decision. Im holding firm and I believe I can get through it God willing, with little to no complications or problems. In the long run I know this is the best for my health. I have kids I need to be here for....so I have to succeed!

    June 2022 surgery buddies

I am probably going to be a June surgery…obviously 🙄 my preferred date of 4/11 wasn’t to be. The last day of school is June 10-ish and I’m ready to go that day. My paper work won’t be sent to Cigna for about another week. I’m leaning towards gastric bypass and I’m meeting with my surgeon next week to discuss what he thinks. I’m looking forward to reading about everyone’s experience.
  11. Hi everyone! I'm new here. I'm scheduled for surgery on the 2nd of May and I'll be starting my 2weeks next week. Any advice to get through this protein shake thing..tia Sent from my moto g power (2021) using BariatricPal mobile app

    Post Op Stomach Injections

I bruise easily. I also got several lovenox injections in that area before leaving the hospital. I also ended up getting an iron infusion before discharge because my hemoglobin was a 7.1 thanks to period related anemia and surgery the same week.
  13. If we can’t stay on the 2 week liquid preop diet, how are we ever going to follow the plan post surgery? We all knew this was part of the process. STAY STRONG! We can do this. Day 2 for me only liquids for 12 more days.

    Slow Losers Club…..officially *sigh*

Slow loser here too. But the weight does continue to come off. My surgery was on 01/11, and so far, I've lost 34 lbs. Back when I was 50, I lost 50 pounds, but it took me 2 YEARS for that! LOL at my age, I don't have the time left! My doctor wanted me to walk more, and I just giggled--it's all I can do to work 40 hours a week at a desk job, much less exercise. If you are young, you have no idea. I think he wanted me to because the weight loss is so slow. Well, the fact that the scale continues to move down is GREAT for me. I'm not hungry-I still have nausea, but I think I have found the way out of that. So not hungry--none of that "oh God, I can't think of anything else but the cookies in the break room" stuff. 34 lbs in 3 months is wonderful for me!

    Advice!

I didn’t have any “food funerals” in the sense that i didn’t eat any more than i normally ate. But what i “normally” ate was probably equivalent to one big huge ongoing food funeral, lol. Nor did i go out of my way to specifically eat “special” items. I changed my eating habits on the first day of my 2 week pre-op diet, and went forward from there, that’s it.

    Sharp burning pain under bellybutton

That is very normal. Each incision goes through skin, fat, muscle, etc. They are small, but they are VERY deep, and they take time to heal completely. Rest, use a pillow to brace for coughing/sneezing, and take meds to stay ahead of the pain if you need them. Thankfully, the pain usually subsides within a week or two. Hang in there!

    April 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hi all, I had my mini gastric bypass (with omega loop) on the 12th April here in Dubai where I live (originally from the UK though). Stayed one night in hospital and was discharged yesterday. Wow!! The pain! I have 3 incisions, one of them my surgeon said I had weak core muscles and he had to stitch the muscle as he didn’t think they would knit back together naturally and that this would hurt for a while. My God! Every time I move it’s awful. Im also feeling so low! Anybody else in this stage? I really am right now full of regret due to the lack of sleep, the amount of pain and just lack of energy I have. I’ve been put on one week of clear liquids so yesterday I drank some chicken bone broth which I will have again today with my electrolytes, coconut water and water.
  20. Your first surgery was a band? then you revised it to what in 2017? and you just had bypass a few weeks ago? Are you sticking to the program? Following the diets and such? But you are just out of surgery and healing. Some people are slower than others and some loose a ton of weight quick. But as long as you stick to it and follow your programs diets and recommendation you will loose the weight.

Messing up my pre-op diet 😩

I had the sleeve back on Feb 7th I had to cut out caffeine before the surgery. I tried to go cold turkey since I only drank 1 cup a day but I had the worst headache ever. Pain meds didn’t help so I went to 1 cup of half decaf then 3/4 cup to 1/2 then to a few sips to none at all. I did this transition 2 weeks prior to surgery. I was suppose to do 2 week liquid diet but to be honest I only did 1 week and cheated 1x in that week. I have not yet had any coffee but I have had caffeine 2x I get the matcha lemonade from Starbucks. I haven’t had any issues with it as far as my stomach but I am dehydrated some afterwards so I drink a bodyarmor lyte the next day. I want to try coffee but I am scared it may be to acidic for my stomach.

  24. TLDR: I am getting closer to surgery and can't seem to stop my RECENT daily habit of binging drive-thru fast food, which I do when I get anxiety about something. I hope someone can help. Full disclosure: I am about 2 months pre-op. The only thing I have remaining before my bari office submits my file to insurance is my last nutritionist meeting. I knew the psych eval was going to be a big deal, so I decided super honest with the psychologist. He cleared me for surgery, providing I get established with a mental health counselor and resolve my binging before surgery. I have been diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder, and PTSD (I also have severe obstructive sleep apnea and PCOS). I have now been seeing a counselor for a few weeks. Also, the counseling center's doctor prescribed me Prozac, which hasn't kicked in yet as I've been taking it for less than 2 weeks. My counselor has told me that her office (or the insurance?? idk) doesn't allow her to provide counseling on the symptom of binge-eating, but rather the childhood trauma behind it. I understand why that's important, but I can't wait to resolve my feelings about the trauma (could potentially take years!) to stop binge-eating and get WLS. I will continue counseling beyond my surgery date, but for now I also want to do what I have to to get the surgery! I talked to my bari office's APRN and nutritionist, and they said they have a list of eating disorder-specialist psychologists I could see, but I have Medicaid, and it's very hard to find any doctor outside of basic community health clinics who accepts Medicaid. They also said maybe the Prozac and regular counseling will help and that I won't need the specialists. I have a book that I think could help me, called the DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) Solution for Emotional Eating (recommended by other WLS patients who have my same surgeon). But for some reason I can't get myself to actually read it. I have some kind of mental block about it. I am willing to hold off on my surgery until I resolve this, but I really would like it to resolve in the next month or so, considering that just a couple of months ago I was not having this fast food issue. Not to this degree, anyway. Plus, eating fast food every day is expensive, and I have gained 6 lbs, which I must lose before submitting to insurance. I have little coping strategies for when I get anxious and want to go get fast food, but I keep ignoring them. 😕 Would appreciate any help at all! I'm getting desperate.

    Advice!

I stuck to my 2 week 800 calorie a day pre-op diet religiously, only to have my surgery cancelled the day, no *the night* before, on the most spurious of pretexts. After that I was waiting for the results of various tests and thinking I might get the call any time, so I stuck to the diet until I got a second definite date, which was a full 2 months after my original date. Then it was right in to the 2 week proper pre-op diet again. I ended up losing 25lbs in those 2 months and boy am I glad that I don't have those still ahead of me. So - I wouldn't change a thing. But you do you! We all approach WLS differently. Just don't do anything you'll regret. Once you're on the pre-op diet, do that.
