    Sleeve or band

My final weigh-in is May 3rd. I'm going to let him know then that I've decided on the sleeve. Between the stories here and then general research I believe it's best to do the sleeve. I also see how many people are having problems getting approval for revision surgeries, I rather avoid that problem.I'm hoping for a quick approval approved a date for the middle/end of May. Sent from my SM-G935T using the BariatricPal App Good for you as long as you did your research and you weigh the pros and cons for YOU then all will be well. May 3rd you still have time hang around ask question read previous post whatever comes to mind ask / Good Luck !I definitely will still be doing research. I want to be as prepared as possible and this is a great tool for that. How's your recovery going? Sent from my SM-G935T using the BariatricPal App
  2. Hi everyone, I was a low BMI bandster. I had good weight loss success with my band, but it has been a journey. Fills, unfills, episodes of being so tight I had to have an immediate unfill, etc. About 6 months ago I started having symptoms associated with a slip and the upper GI tests I've had done definitely show a slip. My choices are: remove lap band (which is not what I want to do), reposition lap band, or revise to a sleeve or bypass. I work for one of the largest health care providers in the St. Louis area and my insurance will cover a revision, but only with a provider in their network. Guess how many bariatric providers there are in the network? 2! One is the surgeon who did my lap band and he only does lap band. The other surgeon is currently not doing revisions and won't be for potentially another year. I could go to another surgeon and do self-pay, but that seems crazy to go through that again. I was self pay for my lap band surgery because my BMI was not high enough and I just recently paid all those bills off. I am also leery of the sleeve surgery because it is so permanent. Lap bands can always come out. I feel like the decision is being made for me. I prayed for assistance making this decision and all arrows are pointing me this way. Has anyone had success after a lap band slip, then reposition? I am worried about it happening again in another three years.

Did you need to do a timeline letter to insurance explaining the band issue and why you need the revision to sleeve? I need to do one and am looking for ideas.
  4. Hello! I'm about 2.5 months out from band to sleeve revision. I'm down 13 pounds since surgery. I'm very pleased!! I'm exercising daily - mainly walking/hiking outside with my dog or on the elliptical at the gym. I'm starting a "personal fitness quest" at the gym tomorrow (once a week butt kicking by a PT basically lol). Most days I have to remind myself to eat. I just went from liquids to puréed a couple weeks ago. I still drink at least one Protein shake per day most days - some days I just can't choke one down. This week I feel like I'm starving all day long. I just started my cycle. Wondering if that has something to do with my feeling so hungry. Nothing else is new or different really. Is my exercising catching up to me? I generally get up to 800 calories when I'm using my skim milk and fruit in my shakes and sometimes close to 900. Since I started puréed foods I've made puréed tuna (with spicy mustard) and chicken (buffalo chicken) and eat maybe half a cup of food in a meal. I like cream of whet but not really much protein there...if I have it I have it with the fairlife skim milk which has 13g of protein per cup. But sometimes diary makes me feel nauseous. So any advice? I think I'm eating the right amount of food. I'm eating my protein first. I'm constantly sipping Water. I just find it so strange to be feeling this hungry! 5. I self paid my band in Mexico almost 11 yrs ago. At the time I paid around 9,000 for the surgery. I went through all the trying to find the "sweet spot" and was never successful. A little over 4 months ago I made the decision to return to Mexico to have a revision from band to gastric. I paid around 6,000 to have the band removed and have gastric done. BEST DECISION EVER!!! dr. Ponce de leon in Tijuana through Bariatric Pal was a great experience. I borrowed the money and would do it again in a minute. Down 70lbs and going. I feel great! I wouldn't waste any more time trying to make the band work. You deserve to have a surgery that works for you. Good luck. Sent from my VS880 using the BariatricPal App
  6. I feel so much better have found this topic! I've been having trouble with my bad for 7 months. Finally came out of denial ( ) and went to see a doctor in my area. Really REALLY disliked my original surgeon. I've had my UGI and now waiting to schedule a date for revision to RNY. Glad to "meet" some people who've been in the same boat. Gotta keep reading. . . .

Dr keith, is also an excellent dr. He's the Dr that Dr. Let sends revisions to. So We have the best docs available in ok. I don't know what the issue was in dr. Le office but I'm OK where I'm at now.

    My Texas Sleevers

Hi, I had Dr Castro and apparently Dr Le jumped in to assist. How did it go for you? How did your post op go? I'm down to 20lbs and it's been smooth sailing for me. Did you join the support group? It's really great and helpful. Ivy Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using the BariatricPal App My post op was okay. I wanted to sleep a lot. I had mine back in 2014. I have not lost much since 6 to 8 months after. I am looking into a revision too. Sleeve to Bypass.
  9. I revised in 2011 after 10 tough years banded. The sleeve has been wonderful for me - am maintaining 150#loss!!! However, there are possible issues with the sleeve. I assume you know about the surgical risks, but what you may not realize is that a significant minority of sleevers develop reflux. Most can control it with meds, but some can't and need to revise to bypass. Also, you can regain after ANY WLS. Plenty of " vets" find we have to remain diligent as your hunger will return and old habits can slide back in. I am so happy with my sleeve results - it saved my life and changed my whole world. I realize that not everyone experiences that and some have unrealistic expectations. Sent from my KFJWI using the BariatricPal App
  10. You won't regret this! After 8 years you will appreciate a normal life. This revision for me was all accidental, because my employer changed insurance company and the bariatric program was different. The new bariatric program required a barium swallow before they would accept me or not. To my surprise my esophagus was in real trouble and things happened really quickly. With all the complications I had with the band my wife was also against me going into another potential mess. We decided that I would get my band removed and continue my gym life and watch my diet. Once my band was unfilled I started gaining weight and quickly decided to get revision. Insurance approved, but, wife was still convinced that I was getting into another mess, but, supported me anyhow with reservation. I proceeded and am extremely pleased with the sleeved life style. My wife has also come around and tells me that I am very different without all the stuck, unstuck drama. We can go on dates and don't worry if the band will act up or not. We are both extremely pleased with the outcome. The recovery diet is tough, but, once you get through it, it's awesome! No regrets here whatsoever! jake
  11. I had my band for eight years with many problems along the way. Had a terrible slip six months in that required a second surgery. After that it was full/unfill for years to follow. I was either in pain every time I ate or could eat just about anything. I finally settled for not much fill so I wouldn't have pain but still threw up almost daily. Finally had to have it removed last May due to severe acid reflux. I had to wait until the new year to change insurance before getting sleeved. Finally was approved January 29th and set a surgery date of Feb 23rd but Doctor didn't like my EKG results at pre surgery physical so surgery was cancelled until seeing a Cardiologist. Went through that and received his approval and will finally be sleeved tomorrow. I'm anxious yet concerned at the same time. After all the issues with the band my wife is very much against the revision. Before I got banded I felt like I had researched it thoroughly but really only looked for the benefits. After having all the problems I researched to see if anyone was having similar issues. I was shocked to see how many people had the same problems and regretted getting banded. So this time I researched all the problems with the sleeve and found very little issues. Nearly every person who revised wished they had gotten sleeved to begin with. I'm feeling pretty good about this procedure but at the same time worried because there is no going back once done. A last word on encouragement would be greatly appreciated.

    Failure

Aww, sounds like you went through a lot a do understand your fears. I had similar experience and same fear of failing at bypass as well. I am revising on May 13, scared to death that I won't be able to lose and if I do I won't be able to maintain it... Only couple of people know about it because I am too embarrassed that I'm going to fail at this too. I am determined to do everything I have to do, but knowing my body, that even if I do everything right still have hard time losing... Sure hope this will not be the case Wishing you all the best on your new beginning, eventfree surgery and great success with revision and maintenance

    Failure

Hey y'all! I was banded 1/2009 and for the first two years, lost about 65 pounds. I could never get the fills in the green zone- too tight or too loose. I threw up 3 times a day for 4 years. Not throw up but the regurgitation(sorry for tmi) Basically, I lost all my weight by starving and working out like I was the next contestant on Biggest Loser, except there weren't cameras or Jillian Michaels screaming at me. I had a band slip in 2011- while on a cruise... First cruise I didn't gain weight on but was miserable. Once back home, all Fluid was taken out and I played the guessing game for a few more years. I then gained all the weight I had lost due to my band empty and poor food choices. Like many who have had a failed WLS know, it's extremely shameful and disheartening. Finally in 2015, I visited a new doctor in DFW who suggested a revision. My biggest fear is losing the weight with RNY and gaining it back. Food has and still is an emotional comfort. First step in recovery is admitting, right?! So I've started a food journal with triggers that make me want junk food. I refuse to invest in this surgery (scheduled surgery is next Tuesday... Thank you Jesus!) and gain all the weight back So anyone out there a big sweets person- did your cravings die down after the revision to bypass? What are some tricks that worked for you? I'm thankful for your help and insight! Xx Alyssa Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

An end to pain and suffering

I'm sorry to hear about your troubles. I had no issues with insurance getting approved for revision. I do have a different insurance then when I was banded. I still had to go through 6 months of supervised nutrition classes, and the whole gambit all over again, but oh well. Best of luck to you!

    Sleeve or band

I'm so glad I got my revision! I love my new stomach! She's doing great by me but she doesn't like ice cream or anything too sweet!
  18. Does your current insurance cover band fills now? I am not a fan of Lap-Band. More people are having them removed than putting them in today. One of the individuals in our bariatric support group meeting had a revision from lap-band to RNY gastric bypass because the band wore into his stomach and it was about to rupture. Health insurance can be difficult. But sometimes you need to play along. Said I haven't used my band the way I was supposed to and didn't have enough follow up care. So follow their advice. Sounds like that is what you are doing (and document it). And see what happens. But also keep the pressure on. GERD is a bad sickness and can lead to other big problems. If you do get surgery, RNY gastric bypass is the type to shoot for, since Sleeve will only make GERD worse.

    Sleeve or band

I had the band in 2009 and have regretted it ever since. The problems a lot of us have faced is severe reflux, vomiting and erosion. After awhile the band begins to erode into your stomach (meaning it wears in). I am waiting approval of a revision as we speak. Most Drs say it's a waste of time. ANYTHING HAS GOT TO BE BETTER THAN THE BAND. I am getting a bypass Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Then mines must know something that so many others don't know...lol I'm running in the opposite direction. Sleeve all the way. Sent from my SM-G935T using the BariatricPal App I have been banded for 10 long years. Hoping to get a revision to the sleeve. Crissy, do NOT get the band!!! I. HATE. IT! I have gone through so much crap with the band and it has been horrible. Don't do it!!! My surgeon doesn't even do them anymore, so what does that tell you? I will be devastated if my ins doesn't approve me for the sleeve. That is crazy!!! I'm so dumbfounded as to why he is still sort of pushing it. I hope they do approve it. That is also another reason why I don't want to do the band...insurance issues if it has to be removed. They already give a hassle to even get approved. 21. A few years back my insurance didn't cover bariatric surgery. So in desperation for change I went to Mexico and had a lap band. Right away I got pregnant and did not get to use the band properly not to mention I had to pay cash for my fills. So now 4 years, I have been getting fills and unfils trying to find my green zone. I throw up a lot and the GERD is unbearable. Not to mention I haven't lost any weight. I have increased my exercise and see the dietician. Even signed up for extra nutrition counseling out of pocket. Well I want to have a revision and my insurance denied me. Said I haven't used my band the way I was supposed to and didn't have enough follow up care. I don't have high blood pressure or sleep apnea. I have pcos and sever GERD. I live on protonix bid and tums at least 3x a day I'm so heart broken and discouraged! Let me clarify. My insurance does cover bariatric now. And many of my coworkers have had the surgery some who even weigh less than me
  22. BarryW, Christinamo7, 2GoldenGirl, all your reccomendations and suggestions are much appreciated. The complications from the hip revision surgery have left my range of mobility diminishing rather than improving and advancing. Thank you for the information, I will discuss this matter further with my Physical Therapist and my Doctor. As far as the protein mentioned by 2Goldengirl, I have a whey liquid protein(42g) in the am and my whey protein shake at night. The Optimum Nutrition Salted Caramel flavor is my favorite and it acts as a "sweet treat" at night. May I congratulate all of you are your weight losses!
