    pretty much all insurance companies have those same requirements, and most of us were approved as long as we met the BMI requirements (which are typically BMI over 35 with two comorbidities, or BMI over 40 with no comorbidities. they're looking for whether or not you've tried things in the past that haven't worked. And with the six-month professionally-supervised diet that many companies require before your final approval, they're looking to see if you're able to stick to a program long-term. I lost 57 lbs before I had surgery (between the six-month professionally-supervised diet that my insurance required - and the two week pre-op liquid diet that my surgeon required). I was approved. I was worried they'd say since I lost weight on my own, I didn't need surgery - but that wasn't it. They wanted to see how committed I was to a program.
  2. 4+ yrs out: I guesstimate a lot. I rarely track my entire day, but I will spot check a meal to make sure I’m getting enough protein or limit my sugar intake. I haven’t looked at my overall calories in a long time. I’m certain if I start tracking now I will “behave” so it won’t show a realistic picture of my habits. I have hungry periods where I feel like I’m eating more than usual and then there’s times when I’m not as hungry. Since it’s been happening for so long I just roll with it. I’m definitely not eating 1000 cal or under. If I had to guess it’s around 1500-1600. That was my BMR according to a smart scale I used to have. One thing I know for sure is that I can’t eat anywhere close to the amount I did pre WLS. And my weight has been mostly stable for a few years.
  3. Just to be clear, going from a sleeve, band etc to a bypass is a conversion of a previous surgery, to another bariatric solution. Revision retains and modifies the original procedure such as a gastric bypass. So you have had a conversion to a different type of weight loss solution. There should be no reason why it would not be successful as long as you abide by your new surgery protocols.

    Hello, all. A bit nervous with my first post. It's been less than a week since I got a new general practitioner (the previous one retired) and formally raised the idea of (probably) gastric bypass surgery. I haven't done any of the consultations, finding a surgeon, etc, that's all in the future. But one thing I can worry about and start to plan for in the present is insurance. I am in Illinois and have Anthem BCBS. Something I see listed on their requirement is: Past participation in a weight loss program; and Inadequate weight loss despite a committed attempt at conservative medical therapy (for example, comprehensive lifestyle interventions, including a combination of diet, exercise, and behavioral modifications); and Anyone have any experience with that, or with Anthem BCBS? Because to my skeptical eye that just looks like a catch-22 way to deny the claim: "Oh, you lost weight? Don't need surgery, then, do you? Oh, you didn't lose weight? Not committed, I guess. Tough luck, though."
  5. Hey please know you got this. I have been beating myself up for needing a revision. Had leave to bypass may 19. I am outpacing my first weight loss by a lot. I’m wiser now. Every single day is a choice and you will be successful if you make good choices more days than not.

    Hello! Long time lurker, first reply. I’m going to be sleeved on 2/28. I had my EGD this week, small hernia found that will need to be fixed. I have a few more preop appointments next week. I started adapting to my new lifestyle months ago so slowly, so I’m ready, I started at 330 in July. I’m at 303 today. I don’t know how to put my finger on it but all my attempts at weight loss did not feel like this. I think I’m just over all the limitations I have. I have advanced osteoarthritis and I’m just sick of not being able to get around. I’m in Atlanta Georgia. love this forum it has helped me tremendously.

    Post Op Rants!!

    I stalled every second week during my first two months post surgery. Frustrating? Yeah, but also totally normal. I was barely consuming 700 calories a day, and we're convinced that that MUST mean we lose weight. How can so few calories result in a stall and weird weight fluctuations, right? Well, the body responds to a prolonged and severe calorie reduction and post-op stress by stalling. It's a normal response, and our poor bodies have a lot of rewiring and adjusting to do after enduring major surgical changes. When I was finally able to eat more and up my calories to around 900 to 1200 a day ... the stalling stopped. I've now been fairly consistently losing, and feel like, after two months of modest weight loss, I've finally hit my "honeymoon period" (which everyone seemed to talk about but I was beginning to think wasn't going to happen for me). So stalls do break. Some go on for 3 weeks or even a bit over that. Others, like me, had them with mind numbing frequency. They're normal, and while it may seem counter-intuitive, super-low calorie intake often causes them.
  8. I’m 11.5 months post op and I have lost 175 lbs total since this process. Starting weight was 358, surgery day weight was 331, current weight 183! Prior to my surgery, I was terrible at logging food, exercising regularly, and had a terrible relationship with food (addiction, portion control, etc). Of course I knew what to do conceptually but the follow through was the issue. I told myself (and truly believe) that the surgery was not the fix! It’s just a tool! A tool that allows me to fix the broken things. What I’m getting at is, although logging food is “difficult”, it’s necessary! You have to be willing do do things differently and consistently if you want to reach your goals. Set up your environment to help you be more consistent: meal plan, log your planned foods the night before or first thing in the morning. Proactivity rather than reactivity is key! I treat my food log like I budget my finances, I track input and output and plan ahead! You got this! You just have to tell yourself you’ll do what it takes. The habits that got you in this situation won’t get you out of it! Embrace your second chance at becoming the best version of yourself and focus on the inputs and the desired outputs will happen! Don’t be afraid to consult your medical team and seek mental health help if need be. We all decided we can’t do it on our own which is why we took this journey. You owe it to yourself to be better than you think you can be! Good luck!
  9. I am 8 weeks post op. I've lost 42 lbs. I am now at a stall weight which is fine I guess, I've read serveal post that say this stall is just temperary so I'm trying to remain optimistic. My biggest problem is "food". Nothin goes down right and nothing feels good in my stomach. I'ts very discouraging. And I miss the satified feeling you get when you eat something really good. Everything I try to eat taste okay but not good. Plus I get really full really fast.

    most people hit several stalls along their journey - it's just part of weight loss. When you hit one, make sure you're sticking to your eating plan, and stay off your scale for a few days. They'll eventually break, and you'll be on your way again.

    Need a motivation re-start!!!

    almost a 90 lb drop in nine months is pretty good - so your overall loss is fine. But no loss in 2.5 months makes me think you've put yourself into maintenance. You should still be able to lose - I kept losing weight for 20 months - although it does slow down the further out you go. You may have to cut calories - or increase your exercise - or both - to get things going again. Are you still weighing/measuring food and logging everything you eat? If not, go back to that. I still do that at almost seven years out.
  13. I'm 3.5 years out. For such a long time I followed my Dr's rules and strived to stick with the 1,000 calories on a non-workout day and the 70g protein goal. But even with that protein goal and water I still find myself hungry and over the past year my calorie count has picked up. My Dr continues to advocate no more than 1 cup of food 3x a day with one snack of veggies. That just hasn't been sustainable for me. My weight has remained fairly steady so there haven't been any real negative impacts, but I just get so stressed when I'm not meeting the intended goals. So - where are you all at?
  14. Hello! I started pre-op Nov 17, surgery Dec 1st. I started at 429 and am now 377. I have been stuck for almost 3 weeks at this weight. No changes in measurements or clothing. Nothing has changed. I am getting beyond frustrated. I try and meet protein and water goals every day, but that doesn't always happen. I have tried upping different things( carbs, fat, protein, etc) with no change. Please tell me this is normal?   15. Hi everyone! I am struggling with my weight right now. My surgery weight was on 4/19/21 I was at 396lbs and now its January 16th and I'm at 309lbs. I am a slow loser haha I feel like I should have lost more weight by now. Before surgery though I actually lost seventy pounds to get approved so my biggest weight December 2020 was 470lbs. I know I have come a long way and I am proud of myself but since October ish, I haven't really lost weight. I been at 309lbs for the past two and a half months and I am starting to not feel as motivated. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions to help me get back to losing weight? I have a long way to go and I really want to get in the 200s already.
  16. Hey everyone just checking in. So today is exactly a month since surgery..... I've lost 9lbs.....scale hardly moves I've been at 291 for a week now. I went to see my surgeon about a week ago and she seems pleased. I can tell in my face and arms I've lost weight but the scale is just not moving at all.     weighed 176lbs this morning and i brought my gucci bag!! ive been chipping away at this for a whilst also enjoying my life, so i do go for cocktails and do have cake at birthdays. ill keep going till 170lbs i think i got quiet with the posting because my weight was fluctuating by a pound or so and it wasnt giving me anything good to report. Ill be back with musing, read soon

That moment during your wls journey that the weight loss starts to slow down and you hit a wall 🧱 and the dreadful stall begins then you start juggling 2-3 lbs up and down up and down ughhhh after loosing 104lbs in 7months i couldn't have hit that wall any harder i literally just want to scream its so discouraging and such hard work physically and mentally.....
  19. Hi, I’ve been denied the surgery from a local doctors bc they only do laparoscopic surgery. I’ve had 4 previous abdominal surgeries ( ovarian cancer twice, vertical c section and total hysterectomy), and one laparoscopic gall bladder removal that took 5 hours. Has anyone had luck with old fashion cut open surgery? Or adhesion removal before laparoscopic? I’m 43, 5 ft 8 and 260 lbs! I’ve already had thyroid cancer and it’s removal. I’m kind of desperate here. I decided to order the meals and shakes here hoping it would help me out some. I want to lose weight I NEED to lose weight I just keep hitting a wall

    I am 6 months and still freezing- all the time. I do notice that when I keep up on my movement/exercise goals in addition to my macro goals it is not nearly as bad as the days/weeks when I don't. So I am learning it is important to keep that metabolism up and keep the fires burning not just for weight loss but for warmth!

    Yes, it looks like they can lift and tuck almost everything if you don't mind a scar! I'm not sure why but they don't do lower legs. I think I'll offer myself as a "practice" body for my surgeon if he wants to develop a procedure for that! My surgeon is Fellowship trained in body contouring after massive weight loss...surely he can come up with something new!
  22. Thanks all for your replies. Good to know you lost weight after surgery. And also lost a lot a lot prior to the operation! I can’t get anything off, no matter what I do! At the highest I managed 10 pounds with a not so healthy diet. Summermoose; I’m jealous and impressed you managed to get off Paxil. I’ve tried tapering down real slow with liquids but it was terrible. Never made it to 0… Even during switching ssri s I felt the effects of getting off Paxil (I’m on them a long time, 25 years) Gradycat: unfortunately people can gain a lot more than 10 ponds, I’m no exception! It’s part of the cause of obesity in 15 % it slows down your metabolism or causes cravings. I’m my case (and with many others) I don’t even have cravings and if anything, i only eat healthier en exercise more! And it’s not coming off, been trying everything for the last 7 years ! Very frustrating!

    This is my second stall so far. The first one was around 3 weeks. I felt incredibly nauseous and couldnt go to the bathroom. It was bad! But then from one day to the next it just clicked and the weight was falling off. So far I’ve lost 61lbs with my surgery having been on the 28th of September. But now since 4 weeks that hasnt chaged at all and I’ve been stuck. I hear you on having to be patient! I will admit I do struggle with this but having people to talk to really helps.

    I was at a stall as well, it's like after 4-6 weeks your body adjusts and tries to hang onto the weight we want to lose. I did all of the above and stepped up my exercise and started losing again. I'm close to 3 months, and down 30 # since sleeve surgery, total down 48# since March. Hardest thing to remember is losing weight slower versus all at once is better for you, and it will happen in time.

    Did you also reduce portion size? I’m not really eating much new foods (like you I’ve become super sensitive to what I like) but my portion sizes have definitely gone up. I’m still in a huge caloric deficit so I’m struggling to wrap my head around why I’m not losing weight. But maybe I should give that a try…
