    Struggling with excercise

When I went into this I made up my mind to become a life long athlete. That was in January of 2012 . I have kept that commitment. Exercise was just a means, not an end. I visualized the finished product... In the best health and shape possible...and structured my life to make it happen. When I first started I could barely climb stairs. I used a steep hill by my house as my gym. I walked up and down the hill, going longer each time. Then I added weights, more time. Then I started running, then more weights. At the end of a year I was running full speed up and down the hill 12 times with ankle weights and 20 pound dumbells. This on top of push ups, knee bends, and kettle bell routines. I follow simple protein first guide lines. Now I don't work out at all. Why? I work at a job where I shovel dirt and run a wheelbarrow, carry heavy boards, and lift heavy poles all day in the Florida heat. I work with men nearly one third my age, (I am 65), who can barely keep up with me. Other than fighting cramps and joint pain my health is good. Oh, yes, forgot to mention, I had prostate cancer treatment in 2009 which caused my cascading weight gain. I was supposed to be dead in 2012. I am not dead. Make your mind up, invest your heart, your body will follow.

    weight gain

I cant seem to lose alot of weight. i have notice that i have gained 5 pounds this month and i need help i have only lost 40 pounds in nine months
  3. I am 2 year post sleeve surgery. Had lost 125 with about 50 more to go. I have an autoimmune disorder so for last 3 months I have been on prednisone and have been eating everything. I have gained 18 pds. I am so upset. Why can't I stop eating... Ugh Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  4. I'm 4 months post op, I've lost 50 pounds so far, but this past week I gained 5 pounds! Why!?! Why has it happened? Feeling super discouraged. Is this the end of my weight loss? Has this happened to other people?
  5. Yeah it was a few lbs higher then before because I hadn't been strict with my eating since I had no idea I had to do another month. Oh good! Thank for the feedback! She said she was resubmitting my paperwork Monday so I'm hoping they come back with a quick response and approbal this time because I want to get my surgery date setup and they only have one more spot for the week of October the 12th. Not that I mind booking into the week of the 19th either but I'd rather do it sooner if possible. My Doctor said he wanted me to do a 2 week diet to shrink my liver and I think they said I might do 2-3 days at the end of liquid not sure yet though. Awesome! Thank you for the info, I can't wait for a response from them as the anticipation is killing me lol but knowing that people are still getting approved even with some weight gain puts my mind at ease quite a bit.
  6. Has anyone had issues with weight gain during the 90 day nutrition and getting denied? My weight has been crazy with going back and forth and I have my final visit weigh in tomorrow and know I'm 3-4lbs higher than my previous weight. Of course I had thought my previous weigh in was my final one so I didn't follow my eating plan as closely as I should have since birthday and all going on.
  7. feel frustrated and worried at the same time.. Just hit the one year mark with my sleeve. I'm 6'1 male and I was 179 lbs but for the past 10-14 days days I have gained 6 pounds but nothing has changed from my routine. I do my intake of Protein (70-90g), Water (64-80oz), exercise (2 hour walk) but it seems strange to me and odd that i have gained weight when nothing has changed. i don't want to start worrying about something being wrong with my sleeve but any feedback from all of you out there is much appreciated. I know that it is normal to fluctuate with +/- pounds but for almost two weeks now i just been gaining weight and it does not show sign of coming down.

    Weight gain panic?

I don't know how accurate this article is but it seems reasonable. It is about glycogen stores depletion and Water. When you are on the liquid diet, your glycogen stores in your liver and muscles are depleted. Each gram of glycogen needs like 2.7 grams of water to be stored. When you lose the glycogen, you lose the water weight. When you start to eat again and re-add glycogen to your body, your body then retains the needed water. Hence, the sometimes dramatic up and down water weight gains and losses. http://justinowings.com/understanding-bodyweight-and-glycogen-de/

    confused and afraid

i am currently 17 years old and weigh about 180 lbs. Writing in this forum is especially hard for me because for first off im having to actually finally accept the fact that i am over weight. The weight gain all started about two years ago...and in 2005 i weighed in at 98 pounds exactly. I have been small my entire life untill now and it is extremly hard having to cope with the new way of life im forced to live with. Three years ago i was sexually, emotionally and pyshically abused, after living in that situation for 11 months i came out of it a wreck. I was diagnosed with post tramatic stress disorder and had to undergo extensive therapy, hyonotherapy and a wide variety of medications. All of which seemed to get me out of my depressed state. What i didnt notice was i began gaining weight like crazy and i had no clue why. My entire body is coverd with stretch marks from gaining around 90 pounds in two years. I feel and look completly disgusting. I was once a 98 pound, active healthy happy girl. Since the weight gain came on, ive found out that i have a auto immune disease called hashimoto thyroiditis which caused excessive weight gain. But once i found out i had it and began meds, nothing got any easier. I now have mild narcolepsy, chrons disease, major thyroid issues, and acid reflux. I also have back pains and joint pains. I continue to gain weight to this day and i am miserable. My mom was over weight and got the lap band surgery and it worked wonders on her...shes lost over 60 pounds and feels and looks amazing. I am really confused and afriad to even think about this surgery, or to even think that my weight is causing me to be unhealthy. Untill i found this forum i felt like no one would be there to listen or understand my situation. I have breifly mentioned it to my doctors and they said it would be really hard to get insurence to help out...did anyone else have that problem when trying to get the surgery? Do you think i would actually be a good candidate for the surgery?

    Gained Weight Right After Surgery

Thank you! I appreciate it. Being that it was my first surgery & first time having an IV, I didn’t know about the weight gain, nor was I informed about it so it took me by surprise lol.

    Pre op preparing!

Yes, go ahead and start your vitamins now, for 2 reasons: getting used to taking them and to hopefully help with the hair loss. I started taking a multi-vitamin about 2 months before my surgery (GNC Hair, Nails, and Skins brand is good; about $20.00 for a month supply). Yes, I have had some hair loss, but not as bad as I thought it would be, and I like to think it has been because I got a jump start on the vitamins. As you know, vitamin imbalances can cause weight gain, weight loss, fatigue, aches, etc. So, the better in balance your body is, hopefully it will help you heal quicker, maintain muscle, and lose weight steadily. Taking vitamins responsibly is always a good thing. I am 9 months out from my surgery and I faithfully take an iron pill and 5000 mg biotin once a day, and a hair/skin/nail multivitamin 2 times a day. I have had labs done twice, and my numbers are perfect---no vitamin, iron, or any other deficiancies of any kind. Of course, for at least a month after your surgery, you won't be able to swallow a pill, so prepare to buy liquid vitamins or be prepared to crush up (nasty) and swallow your pills. But, you will have to do this, so just prepare yourself. If you go the crushed up pill route, mix it with a spoonful of applesauce and it will go down lots easier. Best wishes!!!

    Fatigue

Have you ever had a sleep study? I just completed my second night of testing where I got to wear the CPAP machine to help me breathe. I didn't get but 5 hours of sleep(in a lab with wires attached to me everywhere and a hose attached to my face for the first time) but the quality of sleep was great. Today was the first day in years that I did not have to take a short 30 minute nap about 4:00. I get my machine for home next week, and while I dread wearing it, I hope that it will give me the improved quality of life while I am awake to be worthwhile. I have felt fatigue for years, even with 8 hours of sleep every night. What I didn't know was that I was waking up between 300 and 350 times a night and never got a full nights sleep. I don't know if this is your case, but sleep deprivation is going to cause fatigue, irritability, weight gain, hormone imbalance, heart disease, and more. I am not an expert, just on my second day of learning about it, but my experience today is making me a little more hopeful. Bill
  13. I get weighed everytime I see my doctors, even my family doctor. Remember its your weight gain and nobodys else. Get back on track and count carbs. SIP lots of water 1 hour before eating.
  14. Hi, I have been at the gym 3 times this week and have gained 3lbs. Am a bit confused as am not eating more than 600-700 calories a day, at least 50g protein and trying to get around 40 ounces of water in a day too. What am I doing wrong? Is this normal? I am 7 weeks post surgery and have lost 35lbs so far. Please help!

    BMI Too High--Help!

Sorry to hear about your troubles, is it possible to change the medicines you are on? (as your weight gain over the last 2 yrs could be a reaction to the medication ) to see if that will help you lose the initial weight? You might also want to consider contacting a Dr in Mexico to discuss your case (a lot of people on the forum have had their op in Mexico and have named their Drs if you would like to check it out). Their requirements might be different and you may be able to do your op there. Good luck and wish you all the best. Sent from my SM-G900FD using BariatricPal mobile app

Why can't we keep it off naturally?

Obesity is a time-dependent problem...this essentially means the longer a person's been obese, the less likely he/she'll maintain a weight loss after diet and exercise. Assume we have two 40-year-old women. Both are 5'5" and weigh 300 pounds with identical body fat percentages. The difference is one woman's been obese since childhood while the other one was thin all her life until massive weight gain during pregnancy in her mid 30s. The woman who's been obese since childhood is unlikely to maintain a major weight loss without surgery. Her body's had 30+ years to hormonally adopt obesity as its default state. If/when she enters a weight-reduced state with diet/exercise, her body fights to return to 300 pounds (and usually succeeds). Meanwhile, the woman who has been obese for a few years has a better chance of losing and keeping weight off. Her body hasn't had time to adapt to the potent hormonal influences of obesity. Diane Carbonell is a woman who was thin/average-sized until she became obese (300+ pounds) in adulthood after several pregnancies. She lost weight the old-fashioned way via diet/exercise and has kept it off since the late 1990s. I suspect her body never really had a chance to become acclimated to obesity since she wasn't fat for a terribly long time: http://www.dianecarbonell.com/
  17. Hi all - I had my vertical sleeve done on 8/28. I ended up staying two nights because I couldn't keep any liquids down on the second day. I finally started feeling much better and was released today! Quick question - I weighed myself as soon as I got home from the hospital and have gained 8 pounds!!! How is that possible only drinking a small amount of Clear Liquids?? So discouraging!

    Well...this is unexpected....

Just make sure you stay out of ketosis. Eat carbs. Ketosis can and does cause fetal brain damage, and an entire slew of birth defects, and make sure to take your bariatric Vitamins. The risk of birth defects with WLS patients is 50-60% higher because of Vitamin and nutrient deficiencies. This is why it's so important to wait, and while I understand the concern about weight gain, you'll have to consume enough to support your body and the developing baby which may slow the losing. I'm almost 22 months out, and tomorrow will hit 9weeks pregnant. I was released at 8 months post-op to TTC, I was also below goal, my labs were/are stellar, and I was getting into maintenance. It took 14 months to conceive. I've only gained 3lbs in 9 weeks, and they want me to gain 30 pounds, they actually wanted me to gain 10-12lbs the first trimester, least say I doubt I can put on 9 more pounds in the next 3 weeks. I'm already eating 1800 calories a day, juicing to get in extra calories/nutrients because even at 22 months I struggle to eat enough food. Please take care of yourself. The baby will pull from your body, fat reserves and muscle mass this early after surgery and most "early out" WLS babies do well, it's the mommy's body that suffers the most. Make sure to have your dental check ups regularly so they can watch for decay, and weakened teeth. Congrats on the pregnancy and best wishes for a healthy pregnancy and delivery.
  19. Hi Nanook. I'm glad you are feeling better. I'm happy for your daughter too but strictures sound a bit painful. I recently moved to St Charles, Mo, so I haven't been at lapbandtalk for a while. I hope things continue to get better for you. Hi jsewell. I can understand how you would be nervous. At least you can look forward to things getting better. I know the stress you went through and then the weight gain just feels awful. I haven't experienced a revision but I think it is a fear we all have. Just know that things wil get better after your revision. I look forward to hearing how things progress. I know it isn't a popular thing to say, but I will say extra prayers that things go well for you. Tina
  20. I would have to agree with you on this one. I am 26 weeks pregnant now. Had my band for just a year prior to getting pregnant and lost about 50-60 lbs. I have since gained 40 lbs with the pregnancy so far. Yes it is frustrating, but puking through the band is way not cool!!!! Plus it hurts. So don't worry about the weight gain, if your MD recommends to get it unfilled then do it!. You lost the weight once, you can do it again.

    Frustrated

Everyone looses at a different pace. Maybe the half of a pound weight gain is fluid. Don't give up. I have not been sleeved yet, but I have done a lot of research about this type of surgery. Keep up the good work, it will pay off.
  22. Has anyone else noticed weight gain after having a skin removal surgery? When I had my first surgery which was three procedures at once, a lower face/neck lift, a arm lift and a breast lift with implant, I was in such pain that I babied myself with food during recovery. Eating what sounded good and not really noticing fat or carbs, then after recovery I found myself up 10 lbs. rather than being down some weight which I was expecting. Then last year when I had my lower body lift, I told myself I wasn't going to let that happen again, but low and behold that 10 lbs. came back. I have heard there is swelling and that could be part of it. But shouldn't the removed skin take care of that weight? I have a good friend who has had a total body makeover and has had this same thing happen, so it makes me wonder if it's some part of self destruction that's deep inside of us??? I am currently getting in the best shape I can so I will be as fit as possible when I go in for my long thigh lift at the end of summer, and this time it's not going to happen...hopefully.

So many questions! (long post, sorry)

Congrats on your pregnancy! I am almost 7 months along. So far my weight gain has been 10lbs (although I see the dr again next week so we'll see what that number says) and I had to have my band emptied at 10 weeks due to horrible morning sickness. There are days where I could eat everything in sight and there are days I'm just not all that hungry (I think the heat sometimes has something to do with that too, but I do my best to push my fluids). My port sticks out like a turkey timer and sometimes my son will kick at it and it can hurt. At this point mine has flipped onto its side but this is my 2nd band baby and I know that it will go back to normal once baby comes. If you are gaining weight and baby is growing on schedule I wouldn't worry too much about it. Good luck!
  24. My weight gain journey began in May, 2013. I was exposed to black mold a few months prior in our master bathroom of a house we had just purchased. Unaware of it of course. May 2013, I had to have half of my right lung removed. After the lung removal I was forced to take nine months of oral steroids. During this nine months I gained another person in weight. September 2014, I was well enough to finally have the sleeve done. I tried to lose the weight on my own but anyone who has been on steroids for that length of time knows it is nearly impossible. I have since lost that extra person I gained. And couldn't be happier. The first picture was taken by my surgeon the week before surgery. The second picture was taken last week. My starting weight at surgery time was 222. My current weight is 125, as of this morning. I am 5'4 1/2.
