  3. RNYTalk Newsletter By Hey, RNYTalk members!Happy New Year! It’s time to leap into 2013. You might have slipped a little during the holidays, but January is a great time for a fresh start! Of course, RNYTalk.com is here for you as you work to lose weight and get healthy. Allow the January Newsletter to motivate you to get back on board if you lost your focus in December, or to inspire you to keep up the good work if you were able to stay on track during the holidays. Here’s what we have in this newsletter. Looking Ahead to 2013! Member Spotlight: Meet Jenneliza! New Year’s Resolutions that Work! RNYTalk Member Challenge: Make Your New Year’s Resolutions! Casting Call: Looking for RNYTalk.com Members to be in a Book! As you get back into the swing of everyday life and your commitment to your health, we hope you continue to make Alex Brecher Founder RNYTalk.com Looking Ahead to 2013! 2012 was a phenomenal year for Water skiing. Then, as she says, “it was a no-brainer” when her daughter told her “she was being teased for having a fat mom.” She got her bypass surgery in July and is already down 104 pounds, from a high of 286, less than six months later! Since getting the surgery, she feels more motivation to exercise because it feels like it’s helping. This time, she’s confident that she will lose the weight! Her son already has more room on her lap, her children can wrap their arms around her and she loves seeing herself in the mirror – without the double chin! Jen’s biggest challenge is staying hydrated every day. Another challenge is going to the grocery store and seeing all the tempting and forbidden foods! Jen uses RNYTalk.com to get information and find support from members. As she says, the “forum is full of great people who offer all kinds of viewpoints and discussions.” She loves using the app for iPhone because it is so convenient. Jen’s advice for members who may be struggling with their weight is not to give up – the journey is tough but worthwhile! Thanks, Jen, for sharing your story and offering your advice. Congratulations on your own weight loss! The Protein per day so you feel more full. Make them doable. Keep your resolutions realistic so you’re not setting yourself up for failure. Nobody’s perfect, and your resolutions’ success shouldn’t depend on you to be perfect. Instead of resolving to drink more water, resolve to drink an extra 8 ounces of water in the morning at least 5 days per week. This resolution gives you some room for error just in case you forget your water a couple of times in the week. Plus, the resolution is specific, so it fits with the first tip! Make them controllable. You can’t control whether you lose a certain amount of weight within a certain amount of time. What you can control are resolutions such as sticking to your diet or exercising to burn off an extra 300 calories per day, 3 days per week. Keep these tips in mind when you’re making your own New Year’s resolutions. Solid resolutions together with your best intentions can help you make 2013 a great year for your health, weight and happiness! RNYTalk Member Challenge: Make Your New Year’s Resolutions! This is the part of the newsletter where we challenge RNYTalk.com members to take a step forward by doing something new. The experience can help you grow and gain confidence when you do something you hadn’t even thought about before, or you find out that you can do something you hadn’t even realized that you could do. This month, we’re sticking to the theme of New Year’s resolutions. The challenge for this newsletter is to make one or more resolutions based on the advice in this newsletter. We challenge you to make your resolutions specific, doable and controllable – and we’re eager to see what you decide to do in 2013! Tell us about your resolutions in the recipes to share, let us know! All you have to do is contact Alex Brecher (username Alex Brecher) via RNYTalk.com’s private messaging system. We’d love to hear from you no matter where you are in your bypass journey, even if you’re just thinking about the surgery. Thanks! That’s it for this month’s newsletter. We invite you to head on over to the forums and get a head start on a healthy 2013. Again, Happy New Year to you and your loved ones! May 2013 be the best year so far. Take care of yourself and each other. High cholesterol?

Agree with Kristenle, genetics are hard to overcome... My dad and aunt neither who ever had a weight problem both struggle with high cholesterol... 110lb lost far from a failure "We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them" Einstein

    Travel Post-Op

You should be able to travel with no problem, however, you have to remember that you have a weight lifting restriction! I had to change computer cases and also make sure my suitcase was XTRA light during travel! You can easily take your protein shake supplies and protein bars with you.

    Weight Gain/Stall

Hi! I had my sleeve done 3/27 and initially lost 30 ponds in 4 weeks. YAY! Then I didn't lose anything and now I've gained a few pounds. It's possible that I'm PMS'ing but I'm SO sad/frustrated. I've been very vigilant w/what I'm eating and trying to exercise. I've had a few complications since the surgery including getting a kidney infection and getting put back into the hospital. I haven't been going to the bathroom which worries me. My dietician at my hospital is not very helpful and just wants me to see someone else. It's quite upsetting because I really want this to work. My drs are aware of all of this but man is is this frustrating. I did drink one day but only vodka/water and am freaked that I ruined this. I don't feel like I really know who to talk to about this with because I'm feeling like it's not working now w/the stall/weight gain SO early on. Help! Height: 5'10" Surgery Weight: 264 Current Weight: 237 Goal Weight: 160

    I Said I Wouldn't Do It....

I don't see how logging food before you've eaten it works for anyone. Even this far out, I cannot say what I am going to eat for the entire day. When it comes to the godawful imperial measuring system (cups of spinach, or 1/4 of pork rinds) I always switch my scale to grams. The problem with the imperial system is many people/labels say 2 ounces (weight) instead of quarter cup when they are referencing fluid ounces (volume) . The metric system avoids that confusion with grams for weight and milliliters for volume. I am meticulous with my tracking and have been for quite a while. I find it a valuable tool to prevent me from overeating. It also helps me determine if the hunger is real or just in my head. If I am already at 2,000 calories for the day, it is most likely head hunger. However, if I have been exceedingly active that day, it would make sense that I am truly hungry and need the sustenance. The free version of MyFitnessPal is still pretty darn powerful if you are handy with spreadsheets. I just use their report and scrape the data from the HTML and enter it into my spreadsheet: Those pictures are from last year, but the file is the same today but with more data.

From what I have seen and read you lose for a year to two. Depends. I am about 33 lbs from goal weight and I am 6 months post op.

    Hey I'm New Here!

Ryan..welcome and happy for u that u r getting the sleeve. I am 8 weeks post op and seeing great results. I am not a fast loser. But very happy with my weight loss thus far. Try to stick to your liquid diet 100 percent. There is a good reason that they put u on a liquid diet prior to surgery. If u get head hungry ..keep yourself busy. Go for a stroll, if u are not weather locked. Go to the mall and look at people passing by ..do whatever it take to keep yourself compliant. Good luck and keep us informed on your progress.

    Holiday Weight/Bloat!

You really shouldn't worry. Like you said, there's no way you ate an extra 17,500 calories! It's definitely just water weight and will come back off eventually. The important thing to do is get back into your routine of what you know works for you.
  12. Hi all, I hope that you can give me some help here. Before I even had surgery I asked to speak to one of surgicare's (my clinic) fitness experts. I specifically asked him about using my power plate, and he went away and rang back to tell me that 1 week post-op I would be fine to use it. I asked him about all sorts of exercises and basically he told me to listen to my body and build it up. I have merrily been using my plate, doing my crunches, a bit of light weight training ( I am crap at cardio, but I am joining a gym next week) and now looking at the posts on here I am worried that I have dislodged my band/stopped it healing properly! Surely I would know if I had??? HELP if I dont work out my weight loss will stop - I know what my body is like - and if that happens then I will get negged out - I have to stay in the zone if you know what I mean Nina xx
  13. From the album: Just a few of me

Taken a few years ago when I went back to roller derby and had gained quite a few pounds. I'm afraid I've gained quite a few since then also.
  14. Hello everyone I'm currently 30 weeks out and have lost 75 pounds. I was wondering how much weight everyone who's about this far out has lost. What was your starting weight & goal weight. I need 25 more pounds to be at my goal weight
  15. People seem to loose ALOT of weight FAST with the sleeve, the one where they cut out your stomach. I had plication done and I am losing weight and feel fabulous, but I think if I had the sleeve I would be loosing faster. I had my surgery January 10th, I was 272lbs and a size 22/24 jean. Today I am 238 and a size 16 jean. My surgeon was Dr. Abril in Mexicali and he performs ALL of the different weight loss surgeries. If you want any information let me know. Good luck.

    How Does One Overeat?

NJChick... I feel like I overeat, and its not on chocolate and milkshakes. I can eat for example like two scrambled eggs and two pieces of sausage links. That seems like its more than a cup of food. I don't get the pains or anything that people talk about. I felt a handful of times the food get "stuck", but that was me not chewing enough. Tonight for dinner I had a meatball parm. I ate the meatballs and cheese and skipped the bread. That was a lot. I really felt full after having finished all that. I think that the feeling of full comes different for people. I think some people have pain, others can eat what they want. There really is no perfect science for this I don't think. I am however losing weight...I have lost a little over 40 pounds since I started all this. I had my surgery on 05/05/05......Soooo my feeling is this....as long as your not in pain, and your not vomiting, and your losing weight, your doing all right. Your body will let you know when your full or when you have done something "wrong"... I hope this is helpful! TTYL

Need exercise inspiration- 35 lbs from goal!

Hi There. Thanks for the post. What is your goal weight? My doctor and I set 185 as mine but according to the weight charts that is still considered overweight. I believe someone who is 5'8 should be more like 140-165. What is your goal?

Need exercise inspiration- 35 lbs from goal!

WOW. The end is in sight for you! 35 lbs! That is KILLER! You sound like me ... 5'8, size 18, but I weight a lot more than you. I'm many, many pounds away from my goal! I work out 5-6 days a week, running, elliptical, lifting, etc. Now, here's an idea: go buy a CUTE pair of size 16 jeans, shorts, whatever, since that is when you are getting PS. Make yourself a deal that when they fit, you'll set up the consultation (or some other reward). Try them on 3 days a week and work out! You might have to just gut it out and start exercising...maybe you need to change your focus since you are "comfortable" at a size 18 (it's not good enough for me yet). Work out for your heart, your lung capacity, to lower your cholesterol...take the next step to health ... the weight is almost all off, so now work on the stuff you can't see that will really cause you to be the most healthy you can be. Good luck! You should be so proud of your accomplishment! I'm totally envious!!!
  19. Hi everybody, I am super new to this site. I have my FIRST consultation on Thursday, May 7th and I'm not sure what to expect. I'm nervous about not getting approved or not saying the right things. I just turned 21 in April and I've been overweight for most of my life, basically since I was about 3 years old. I probably hit obesity during my teen years. I've tried many diets, and even went to "fat camp" when I was 13 and 14, and then another one for adults 18 and over, two years ago. I also went to culinary school and my family owns a restaurant, so I am around food all. the. time. Food is my life, and I've wanted to be thin ever since I can remember, so surgery seems like my only option at this point. It doesn't seem like there can ever be a time when I'll be able to lose weight without it, especially after trying so many things over the past years. Anyway, if anyone can tell me what to expect at my first appointment, that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading

    Did you discuss your surgery?

"My so called best friend last week commented on our old coworkers weight loss and said "idk why the eff she keeps posting pictures of her in the gym when she knows dam well she had surgery and she is not losing that weight on her own. She needs to stop taking pics of her at the gym." Wtf! Why do women treat eachother so badly?! She should be proud of her for going to the gym and kicking ass! Not talking about her behind her back!

    I Said I Wouldn't Do It....

For me, once I got into the habit of it, it's not a big hassle to do so. I think MFP is amazing, especailly considering it's free. I'm not neurotic about it, I don't weight or measure things like spinach. I do weight most things though, cheese, jerky, salad dressing, meat, beans, etc. I don't cook a lot. It's pretty pointless when I can only eat 2 oz. But when I do I use MFP recipe builder. It works really well, IMO. For a big recipe I just guesstimate on the number of servings. I eat out a lot, and mostly at non chains. I also generally use the highest calorie option for a dish. I don't stress out too much over it, I figure logging, even if it is 100% accurate gives me a better record than not logging. MFP is fantastic about having ethnic dishes in their data base.

    Updated picture

I see a difference but I know what you mean about the pant sizes. I guess because most of my pants have a stretch waist and since our tummies are somewhat moldable into pants, I wasn't really noticing a difference for a bit. It just seemed like, yeah, I'm still wearing the same ones, I have finally gotten to where I am wearing a few I wasn't able to wear. I think when you carry a lot of upper body weight, it just seems to be slower. You are doing great!!

Love the smile on the after surgery picture. But, do you have the weights mixed up? You don't weight MORE after surgery, do you?
  24. You may have "risk factors" and don't realize it. Your frequent heartburn is probably one. Find out what the criteria is for your specific insurance carrier. I'm fairly new at all this too, but from what I've learned, risk factors include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, abnormal blood glucose, joint pain, decreased mobility, asthma, breathing issues and all sorts of things you have learned to live with. Talk to your PCP as well. Gaining 5lbs weight may be an option, but be fully informed before you binge. Good luck.
  25. Hey all! Woah, I didn’t mean to make this so long, but I’m a rambler. This is my first post and I'm not sure if it belongs here, but it’s going here lol. I’ve been battling depression and obesity since I was a child. I hit 200lbs when I was 12, and although I was an active dancer in highschool and walked so so so much (my friends and I were mallrats with no cars) and saw a nutritionist in my junior and senior year, I was probably around 215 when I graduated. For a 5’2”, 17 year old girl, that was already morbidly obese and it just went up from there. I was definitely in survival mode for the next few years, on a few antidepressants, working and going to school, just trying to live. The earliest data I have from my FitBit and MyFitnessPal has be at 275lb in 2016, and I know I went up to the 290s in 2017, because 2017 is a blank on my trackers, and knowing me, I was too ashamed to record it. The next I have is 273 in 2018. I went off my antidepressants around the end of 2017, and while I was mentally “white-knuckling” it, I started losing weight. But it was very much a lose 10lbs, gain 15-20 cycle. Then my birth control made it worse. At the beginning of this year, I was stuck in a plateau of 231, and I talked to my doctor about my disordered eating, and she got me a therapist and I got myself a personal trainer. At that doctors appt, I almost asked for a referral for surgery, but chickened out and asked for a therapist and a nutritionist instead. Love my therapist, but the nutritionist wanted me on a 1200 cal diet that didn't mesh with disordered eating at all. An important note here, is that my mother, who has passed, had the RYGB circa 2002. So surgery has always been in the back of my mind. After a series of unfortunate events in March, I lost 10lbs rapidly and realized my bmi (40) was at the cut off for surgery with no comorbidities. At the beginning of April I asked my doctor for a surgery referral. She offered me Wegovy or Saxenda, but I really can’t see myself using injectables for the rest of my life, so she went ahead with the referral. Had the first consultation a little over a week later, did a few zoom classes, completed forms, did the psych eval (actually awful), and today I got an email saying my insurance approved me and my program would contact me soon for a date. My reasoning is that I see my trainer twice a week and my therapist and I are working on my relationship with food, but I’m getting older and I have that historic lose/gain cycle, and my weight has been a source of unhappiness literally my entire life. Surgery isn’t going to fix everything, I know that, I’ve talked to my therapist about that, but she and I agree this would be a great tool for me in conjunction with the other changes I’m making. My trainer, who is a family friend, doesn’t like the idea. But she’s only known me as an adult, she doesn’t see that a lifetime of yo-yo dieting and trying to stay active isn’t cutting it when I’m still carrying an extra 100lbs. A close member of my family wants me to do keto again, because that was my biggest diet win, but that also didn’t mesh with my disordered eating in the long run. Since my consult, I’ve lost about another 6lbs, firmly putting me where I was when I was a teenager, which is a surreal feeling, but it’s being used as proof that I can “do it on my own.” Honestly, my mindset is that I’m eating less in preparation for surgery. There’s been memes shared on instagram stories of people who I know must know I want to get wls done, calling the surgery “body mutilation” and how “surgeons regret performing bariatric surgeries because it's unnatural.” It makes me doubt myself, like is this just my depression wanting to “mutilate” myself, or is this me trying to overcome my depression and finally do something for myself? What was it for my mother? I was too young to ask her these questions and now I can't. This is a very long post to ask; I’m doing the right thing, right? Am I being rational and making sense? I know I can lose the weight, but keeping it off is constantly clawing and if I slip now just a little, the lose/gain cycle could catch up, and I'm so tired of it.
