    Bay Area CA

ok here is my take in 2004 I started my Journey at Thinner Future and was lucky enough to be scheduled with Dr Wetter. I thought I was going to have RNY, but Wetter told me about the band and suggested that. Back then my starting weight was 294 LBS.....Yvette in his office sent through my request and everything went smoothly with very fast approval. I was on track to have surgery about 5 months after my initial visit. Dr Wetter is a sticker, like Dr Foster about losing weight before surgery. My belief is that in the SF Bay Area there is probably no better surgeon then Dr Wetter. BUT A GOOD SURGEON IS ONLY PART OF THE EQUATION. For the lapband you are going to need follow up. I was thoroughly enamored with Dr Wetter's experience, success and credentials......but he toyed with me in the most horrible way and as luck wouyld have it I opted to change surgeons. I went across the bay to Alta Bates. The office was not slick like Thinner Future. The surgeon was an Indian version of Marcus Welby and I was going to be his 1st lap band. He had LOADS of RNY's and other laproscopic experience, but no bands....I took a leap of faith and it could not have worked out better. I still attend the Mills support meetings the 1st Saturday of every month because they are the best in my opinion (I have done Kaiser's and the Alta Bates ones, but love the Mills ones). I have friends that have used Foster and they all love her. These are RNY patients - and Foster WILL CANCEL your surgery date of you do not lose as much pre op as she says.......My oldest and dearest friend used Wetter for her band (agaist my advice). She too thought he was the most capable in the bay area, but post op she switched to my guy in Oakland because of his bedside manner.....more by personal message if you want.....come to the support meeting this Saturday at Mills

    Opposites attracts!

I'm not sure he is totally opposite, but more that than the same. He is of average weight, pretty active, and has lots of energy. He is always wanting to be on the go, while I want my down time. I also had the band so I could keep up with him.

    Pre-surgery Jitters

Hi Everyone, My VGS surgery is scheduled for 12/28. I have been so focused getting through all of the steps to get to this point, that I haven't had time to be nervous. Now that I am in a waiting phase... I am getting a bit scared to do this. I need to start my liquid diet on 12/23, and I am afraid I won't be able to stick with it over Christmas. Also - very concerned about failing to lose weight AGAIN. Can anyone help me with tips and tricks for not driving myself crazy before the surgery?!? Thanks!
  5. Hi everyone! I am Gloria from Beautiful Northern California. My surgery is on December 18 and I am extremely excited about it! For the past five days I have been drinking the five protein shakes which I purchased from my doctor along with eating sugar free Jell-O sugar-free popsicles and chicken broth oh yes and lots of water. I have been weighing every morning and my weight is jumping around sporadically actually scaring me as of right now I weigh 1 pound more than I did at my last doctors appointment. Should I be overly concerned? Should I stop weighing myself daily? Any advice anyone wants to share with me would be greatly appreciated! Oh yeah and I have not cheated once. Thanks!
  6. ALSO REMEMBER THAT WITH THE LAPBAND WE LOSE WEIGHT SLOWER THEN SAY THE GASTRIC
  7. I was like you in the beginning. I thought I'd be losing 10-15 lbs a month. Then I did the math. First, if you have a lot of weight to lose, you can lose 50. 60, even 70 lbs the first 3 months if you follow the rules. Most of us only lose 10-25 lbs the first few months. And the weight we lose in the first month is mostly Water. Here's the math: One pound equals 3500 calories burned! Our bodies need about 2000 calories a day to maintain the weight we now enjoy. If you can pump up your exercise routine, that figure could go up 200-600 more calories per day. If you consume 1500 calories a day and burn 2000 you will burn 500 more than you consumed. 500 X a 7 day week= 3500 calories burned or you just lost 1 lb. Burn an extra 500 calories per day through exercise and there's another 1 lb. It's not an exact science and so many things can affect your weight such as sodium intake, medications, menstrual cycles, high carb intake and so on. These can cause you to retain water and it's not hard to retain 2-4 lbs of extra water. So, it's easy to plateau(I do have a great plateau buster program). Here's a great link to a calorie calculator which will tell you how many calories you need per day to lose weight. http://nutrition.about.com/od/changeyourdiet/a/calguide.htm tmf

    First Fill

Hi Dawn, I just thought I would share my first fill experience since it was a bit different than what Sue described... and as we know, just about every doctor is different. My doctor asked me to eat soft foods for the first 48 hours. I was back on solid foods with no problems after this period. My doctor only uses floro for fills if she is having a problem accessing the patients port. She also does not numb the area first. I had to have 2 sticks before she got my port, but it really wasn't that bad, kind of like getting lab work done. When she missed that was more painful because the needle was hitting tissue and not the port. Once she got the port, I didn't feel anything. I think this is subjective. My doc was only going to start me with 1/2 cc, but the folks from Inamed had just been out for a visit and told them to start first fills with 1cc. So, I got 1cc and felt a little restriction for the first 1 to 11/2 weeks. Now, I can eat almost the same as preband... my portions are not exactly the same size... but way too much to lose weight. I have actually gained 2lbs and I had only lost 15 in my healing phase. I was told to wait 6 weeks for my second fill and tried to call about going in early, but my doc wants us to work in a consistent plan and told me to try eating about 5 small meals vs. 3 large ones and keep up my exercise. I have 3 more weeks before I can get another fill and it will be a challenge not to gain more weight back. I hope you are successful and feel great restriction after your first fill, but if you are anything like me... PLEASE don't be discouraged if it disappears after a couple of weeks. Hopefully, if you do have my same experience, your doctor won't make you wait 6 weeks for fill number 2. Good luck and let us know how it goes. Take Care,

    First Fill

Okay everyone, I was banded on 2/27/04 and I am having my first fill tomorrow. I am slightly nervous. What am I to expect? Will I be back on Clear liquids again? Does it hurt? Will I feel restriction right away? Right now I have little to no restriction, I basically can eat whatever I want, which I don't like. I have only lost about 15 pounds during this "healing" phase, and sometimes I wonder if it was all worth it. I have read that you really aren't even suppose to be losing weight until you have gotten your first fill, is that true? I just want to be successful with this banding, I would hate to think I went through all of this for nothing!! I guess I am just a bit discouraged, I need to get this fill, and hopefully I will start losing again! Any words of encouragement out there from the banded?? Thanks for the support all, I do appreciate it!! Dawn Banded 2/27/04 Dr. Boutt 260/245/160
  10. Catherine55, I loved your pro/con list especially the one about nylon noises and courdoroy pants. My son's used to call my courdoroy pants "fire starters" because they swore I could rub them together like a boy scout and start a forest fire. My surgery is in 3 days and yesterday I had to call my sister in FL and tell her to talk me into the surgery. I was ready to drop out since I have lost almost 20 lbs with teh shakes and my boys are not supporting my decision. They say I can lose the weight if I only tried, I am taking the easy way out. I am looking forward to playing on the ground with my grandson and not feeling winded when I bend to get a toy.

    new from RI -Ct line

Hi Ms RoJacks! First, let me congratulate you on being banded - where did you get your surgery done? I live in Norwich, but was banded at Yale New Haven Hospital (I work at Yale). Please don't move ahead to thicker liquids or solid food unless your doctor's orders say it's okay. You are still healing, and it's important to follow doc's orders while that is going on. You don't want to have ANY kind of problems right now - and I know it's hard, but it will help you in the long run. I'm glad you're not having hunger problems - I was hungry all the time, even after I was banded! I'm doing much better now - approaching my 1 year bandiversary (in 6 days) and down over 70 lbs. My goal was to have lost 100 by now, but I'm still really happy with what I've achieved. I hope that your fiancee is able to get the help he needs to conquer his alcoholism - it will make it very difficult for him if he's at all insecure or uncertain about your progress and your getting healthy. Please take good care of yourself, and if you have questions, don't hesitate to ask. I also suggest you talk to your doctor and their support staff often - don't do this alone. The doc and his staff know your situation best - listen to them! Once you get the clearance to exercise, do what you can - walking is great. I lost the majority of my weight with walking - I started running about 3 months ago, and ran my first 5k race in October. Something I NEVER thought I'd do when I was heavier. Find ways to occupy your time that don't include food - now is the time to break old habits and establish new, healthy ones. Good luck and blessings to you! :tongue_smilie:
  12. Oh boy do I know how you feel! We are in about the same boat weight loss wise and I have 2nd and 3rd thoughts ALL the time. My husband is being banded on the 30th and is a diabetic too. I think because of the diabetes I am more comfortable with his surgery than I am with my own. We are all cost out of pocket as well and that weighs on my mind very often. He needs it but I want it...is that fair? Then I just go back to being scared. The only thing I can say is that I am hoping I will wake up one of these mornings and just know its right (or wrong) for me. Originally I was going to get mine on the 30th too.....I woke up one morning and just knew it was wrong and I needed to be 100% to get my husband through it first. I hope that happens again.

    Just starting

I am just starting the process to have lapband surgery. I am a little nervous but excited at the same time. I have struggled with my weight for a long time. Finally, decided to do something about it. I have Tri-care insurance and they just started paying for the surgery. :smile2:
  14. One of the things that I have learned from my orthopedic adventures is that the connective tissues to our muscles, which includes the fascia part of the abdominal wall that helps to hold our guts in, have relatively little blood flow, which means that they heal a lot slower than the associated musculature. So you may feel healed and strong enough to lift more, your connective tissues may disagree. Incisional hernias are fairly common after abdominal surgery such as ours, and can sometimes be triggered by something as innocuous as a sharp sneeze or cough. I resumed some lifting fairly early, but kept the weights low, on the order of half or less than what I had been doing, and used the machines to specifically avoid compound lifts and to isolate the core so that it could heal. It was more of a range of motion and stretching exercise than muscle building at that time. My doc is more conservative than most in this regard and recommended avoiding things like crunches and sit ups for 12 weeks, and arguably that is not conservative enough (the plastics guy detected an umbilical hernia when I went for a consult, which was not notable to me, but was to him). OTOH, an incisional hernia can be a ticket to a subsidized tummy tuck if you need it!

    My fabulous hubby!

No, all natural, I swear. My legs are in hose - faked you out! I guess I was lucky, a former college athlete - it must have "taken" and kept me in semi-toned form even after losing 120 pounds. I use weights on my arms, cause I like that look - but otherwise, real lazy!

    I pigged out!

I kinda did the same thing. Two weeks pre op my surgeon's nurse told me I had better not gain any weight prior to surgery. I believe that she was warning me that he would nor proceed the day of surgery if I had gained. So I had lots of food funerals but with a strong dose of fear. I had ice cream, sushi, Indian, steak, candy, cake, doughnuts, fried foods, ...even things that I would never normally want to eat. But I tried to keep the portions much smaller than usual, I was exercising a lot and I would cut back on the other meals of the day. I lost 4 lbs even during that crazy time.

    I pigged out!

One month before my preop diet I went on a 7 day cruise...I remember my boyfriend and I eating so much that by dinner time he was too full to eat. He said he was skipping dinner and I freaked out! I haddd to have dinner!!!! (even though I wasnt even hungry) we faught and I ended up going to the buffet by myself lol...then ofcourse we ate pizza and Cookies later that night, I was just addicted to food...luckily for me I went to the gym on the cruise and tried to eat in small portions at times(therefore I had only gained 4 pounds) when I came back home from the cruise, I needed more food funerals...I ate big macs for no reason, pizza, french fries, oreos....I remember eating the whole carton of chineese food all by myself, and I mean all of it! I literally forced myself to consume it all. I had a bad stomache ache and just remember feeling really depressed as hell. Damn I remember that day like it was yesterday....Anyways long story short I started my liquid diet 1 week early because of my food funeral lol I didnt want my doctor to notice that I gained weight! So I did 3 weeks of liquids...I lost the 4 pounds and some more (prob like 16 pounds or so) Now I am almost 7 months post op! Since the cruise until today, I have lost 80 pounds! I do not think of food, I do not care for food the way I use to...I dont really like eating all that much...I just wanna see my body get sexier...It takes time but within a few months ur mind changes along with ur new body...U have the mentality of a healthy person. All you wanna do is excersize, feel fit and light....You will be amazed TRUST ME
  19. I'll be 9 months as of the 22nd We've lost about the same amount of weight post surgery, too! Yes, I have to work my ass off just to lose a pound a week at this point. I struggled, HARD, from 6 months on trying to find the happy medium of calories and weight loss. Stalls, very slow weight loss (a couple months I lost only 2 pounds the whole month!) have been the bane of my existence. I am training to do a 5K, so I am currently running over 2.5 miles every other day. I have really had to up my calories and (GULP) carbs to keep losing weight and not stall and bounce around 2 pounds for weeks. Some days I have to eat all day long. It's friggin crazy. Of course, everything I'm eating is all nutritious. I will eat an occasional treat. I have managed to tighten things up a little by some strength training. My stomach is a different story. My insurance covers Panni, so I will look into that once I hit goal and maintain for a while. Luckily, most of the hair loss has subsided. It was alarming for a while! I have super thick hair, so really the only people who noticed were me and my hairdresser. When she would foil my hair and then wash and comb, there would be WADS of blond hair coming out in clumps. You've done amazing! And I, like you, am happy I took the step and had the surgery. I have learned so much about myself, good and bad. I wouldn't trade this experience for the world! Good luck to you as you continue towards your goal!
  20. I had my sleeve surgery 3 years ago...and just recently had my baby 6 months ago.....I have managed to gain 30 lbs since having my baby im depressed and I need help. Im completely out of control with my eating. Im stressed out and I eat because of it. And vice versa....after all the weight ive lost only to be gaining weight slowly ....im so frustrated and im starting to feel uncomfortable in my own skin. Any advice to get my weight back in control
  21. I go in for my consult in August and it looks like things will move pretty fast from there. I'm starting to doubt things and wonder if I should do this at all! I have 70 lbs to lose. I'm 28 and have been 220+ lbs since I was 20 and have struggled with weight my whole life. After 3 kids and numerous failed diets and gym memberships I've started seriously considering wls. Up until the last few days I've been sure of it. Now I'm wondering if I want to deal with the side effects of having a band. My husband would like me to lose some weight but doesn't understand why I can't just do it on my own. It's so frustrating that I can't. I'm scared to lose the ability to binge or rely on food for comfort. I love to cook and show my love for others with food. I know I want to be healthier and look better but I'm not sure if I can achieve it even w a band! Has anyone else struggled w these thoughts on wls?? Just feeling down, depressed, and somewhat of a failure and needed to vent some of it out before I throw in the towel on the band all together.

    Some Questions!

Weight and strength training protects your weight loss. My entire family had this surgery. The ones who didn't work out with weights didn't lose as much weight because they didn't have enough muscle mass to continue to burn weight. The dr couldn't stress enough that weight and resistance training was far more critical than cardio in the long run.

    8 days to go!!!

I'll be having surgery in 8 days!!! I'm 6 days into my pre-op diet and I've lost 10 pounds. I feel really good about that, because I've been sticking to the diet really well. Four protein shakes during the day and one healthy choice dinner. Add veggie or healthy choice dessert if I'm still hungry but no more than 1100-1200 calories per day. Some of the 10 pounds is probably water weight and I'm counting from weight that I just gained from having "last meals". The first two days are pure hell, but after that, I have gotten used to drinking my meals instead of eating them. I really haven't been hungry much at all. My boss took me to lunch on Friday, and he knows I'm having surgery, but I didn't tell him what for. I ate 1/3 of a grilled chicken sandwich really slowly and he didn't seem to notice. Then, I just drank a protein drink for dinner. I've been meaning to get to the gym but it is COLD. I mean really COLD for Florida. It's been in freezing temperatures the past few days. When I get off work it's dark and cold and I just want to stay inside and be warm and not go back out. I will definitely start going to the gym after my surgery. I think I can do cardio fairly soon after and weights after 6 weeks or so. I'm really looking forward to losing this weight and starting the new year off right!! I've only told two people at work that I'm doing it and only a few friends and my family. I actually am going to have a month off work counting the Christmas vacation I already scheduled, so I hope to come back to work much lighter. Let the rumors begin!!!
  24. I had my endoscopy today, and everything turned out great. But I took out my nose piercing and it closed in the two hours the procedure took! Only bad thing to happen so far in this journey. Losing weight > losing my piercing, though!
  25. Yay Steve - That’s so wonderful - so glad for you. Yes it is an emotional roller coaster. Food just like any other drug can control our lives and we just have to move on from those things that are hurting us. Just keep doing what your doing - looking at the (non food) positives like the being able to move better, less pain, less medications, etc. Look at us. We are Irish and I have to give up bread and potatoes. OMG.... - but I know it will be so worth it. Gosh I can't wait to fit in the tub again. LOL I too am excited about the idea of being able to move better. Just to do my own toes, work in my own garden without spending the whole next couple day recuperating from it. It will be so worth it, you will see. Find new interests – bowling, hiking, hunting – things that don’t relate to food. Like I love painting, crochet, and gardening. I’m putting a lot of focus into these things and not so much on the culinary stuff. All it has done is make me miserable like I’m sure it has you. I too was a bit ashamed to tell people. Like I failed or something.. taking the easy way out. I’ve gotten so over that. I’ve tried for 20 years to deal with my weight with many programs, diets, exercise routines and stuff. I have to say I really did try. So the heck with what others say. You’re doing this for YOU and your family. Losing the weight to be healthy and prolong life to be with your family What ever the reason. What people say doesn’t matter. I haven’t announced like all out, but most people I know, know. I don’t miss work and it was really hard to explain the taking 2 week off so most my coworker know too. But no one has been negative at all. Actually way opposite. Please do keep us updated on your progress. My surgery date is July 12th so same as you sooo nervous but ready to get on with this new chapter in my life. Praying for you and a more healthier and active future. GrInS
