  1. That would be a FUN surprise if you come back and I'm banded...I wouldn't mind that kind of surprise at all! Yeah, I'll take the first date they offer me if the opportunity comes up, and any surgeon too. I'm sure they're all awesome. Liz said that cancellations don't happen too often but the do happen. I think they're usually due to weight gain, getting sick before surgery and unable to go under anthesia, abnormal ekgs and cold feet. Hopefully Riley's just sleeping like a baby and trying to heal. I hope we hear from her soon!
  2. Hi, I'm just starting to think about lap-ban surgery. I am 38 & have recently broken the 200lb mark (only 5'3.) That was kinda a bench mark number for me. My weight has not been a life long struggle. I've wrestled with 10-15 pounds since college but after my daughter was born (she's almost five) the weight piled on quickly. I used to be very active & atheletic & would like to get back to that. Plus, I'm just feeling sluggish & not great. I want to be active & healthy for myself & my kids. My son (7y/o) has high functioning autism- I think contributes to some of my weight gain. My focus has been on him for the past several years. I've done that at the expense of taking care of myself & using food as a form of stress relief. I wonder what is life like after the surgery? After you're well healed and weght lose is moving in the right direction- can you have a somewhat normal eating pattern? I assume you'll always need to eat small meals but can you eat regular types of food? I like to cook & grow veggies in the summer- could I eat a salad, go out to dinner with my husband, share an ice cream with the kids on the boardwalk or will I have to live on Protein drinks forever? I really would look forward to healting healthy foods -I'm not concerned about having to eat a healthy diet. I am concerned that the surgery would mean not participating in things like family holiday dinner etc- ie I'll stand out cause i'll only have a pine float (toothpick & water) at every occaision. If anyway has thoughts/experience on those concerns, I'd appreciate your input. Thanks, Jen

    confused and afraid

Wow, sounds like we have the same beginning, so let me introduce myself. I'm Serenity, I'm 19 and from northern California. I have always been extremely active, and although I wasn't as small as you, at 16 years old I was a perfect 110 pounds. Unfortunately, I too was sexually/physically/mentally assaulted at that age, and the tolls have been enourmous. I went through, similar to you, many different forms of therapy, and many many medications to battle the post traumatic stress as well as the insomnia and anxiety. Although the depression, anxiety, and insomnia have pretty much gone away thanks to the medications and time, I managed to put on about 115 pounds in three years. Wow, right?! That's what I said. I was completely in denial of how much weight I had gained until I was diagnosed with sleep apnea. Because of my rapid weight gain I now stop breathing in my sleep. Not only is it horrible for my health, but it's definately not easy having friends over when I'm stuck wearing a cpap machine to bed. Hence how I ended up looking into the lap band surgery. Throughout those three years I have tried every diet, every personal trainer or work out video i could get my hands on, and after losing the initial 10 pounds or so, I couldn't get anymore off. I, too, am feeling a little confused and afraid of the lifestyle changes I must commit to in order for this "tool" to be helpful, however, I feel that missing out on normal teenage activities is harder than those lifestyle changes. I would love to be able to snowboard again, or go to the waterpark without crying for hours and hours at a time. I would love to go play football in the rain, skip around the mall, or even go hiking again... and for me the lifestyle changes totally seem worth it to be able to do the things i love doing again. Growing up in everything from beauty pageants, to dance classes, to an amazing 8 years cheerleading, I never thought I would be in the position I am now. I think gaining this weight has taught me alot about life, and people in general, but I also think it's time for me to take action and do what I need to do to be happy again. I would love to talk to you if you think it would help.. I'm excited I found the teen forums because I really wasn't relating much to the 40's and 50's year olds..

This thread is going to be sooo inappropriate!

Ugh, I'd definitely be up a size if I put on 5lb. I dont let my weight vary by more than 2. I'm very lucky, my weight stays VERY stable, it never goes down, but it doesnt usually go up by more than 1lb unless its period time. I take action at 1lb, I cut back for a few days. And I absolutely NEVER miss my exercise. I really believe that the true benefit of exercise in relation to weight is in preventing regain, I am amazed at how far I can push things without gaining weight, and I've had the same experience at times in my life before when I've been a regular exerciser for long periods. It'd be PANIC stations here if I gained 5lb. I dont even want to think about it happening. I must not be prone to Water weight gain becuase you're right, you're not gaining and losing fat really.

    Exercising...but Gaining?? Please Help!!

It takes a long time to put on muscle weight, and doing cardio doesn't do alot of muscle building. Cardio burns calories and is healthy in other ways but that's not where your weight gain is coming from. I have a trainer who's taught me alot about working out, but the main thing is the motivation of meeting with her. I cant really afford it right now, so i'm back to walking mostly, but i do it with a friend and my dog so it's harder to get out of when i don't feel like it. I heard that one of the makers of the band (Allergan) just worked out a deal for patients with Curves and some sort of online tracking and after program with Lindora. I don't know if it's only for new patients but check it out on the Weight Loss Channel- there's a video about it there. There are tons of fun workout dvds you can do from home too if you need ideas and fun workouts
  6. I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea almost two years ago and for those of you unfamiliar with what apnea does, I will give just a brief bit of information. When a person is not sleeping as they should, your body goes into survival mode. It thinks it's being compromised therefore it starts to hoard it's reserves. There are two main hormones that control metaoblism and those two go into virtual hibernation to slow the metabolism to nothing. Unexplained weight gain is one of the reasons my doctor suspected apnea since she knows I eat a low-fat diet. I was attending a seminar and one of the speakers was a surgeon discussing bypass options. One of the things he mentioned was that every patient on whom he has performed bypass surgery no longer has apnea due to the weight loss. Well my ears perked right up! I thought "I'll do just about anything to get rid of sleep apnea". So I made an appointment to meet with him, went through the six months of counseling with the dietician, followed all the guidelines their clinic required in order to qualify for surgery. My insurance initially turned it down due to a low BMI, even with the co-morbidities of hypertension, GERD and apnea. However they approved it after an appeal was filed. So, now to my issue. I was banded on January 27 and have done fairly well with all the issues that come with surgery. But for the past five nights, I have woken from a deep sleep due to horrible, intense, gnawing hunger pangs. I mean I feel like I haven't eaten in three weeks! And I have eaten!! Now I feel like I am in a vicious circle. If I don't sleep, I won't lose any weight. That's a proven fact for me. What is causing this? The past two nights I have broken the rule of not eating before bed. I thought that if my stomach had something to digest and process, it would just go about it's business and let me sleep. However, it has not worked. It does not seem to matter if I eat before bed or not. I see my surgeon again on the 26th of the month and I will discuss this with him but I am wondering if others have had this problem. Am I just in an adjustment phase? Will getting a fill make a difference? Any advice, insights or comments are welcome as I am so darn frustrated. It feels like the cure was as bad as the initial problem!
  7. I am 8 months post-op and doing FABULOUS! I've lost 70 lbs. and have 70 to go! I found out about Lap-band from my mother who had the surgery two years ago. I was very leery about the procedure at first bc of all of the problems my mom has had (slipped band and chronic pneumonia from the acid reflux) but I found a great surgeon and I have had absolute success. I used to play a variety of sports during high school but ankle injuries side-lined me and I began to live a very sedentary lifestyle while taking in the same amount of calories. I'm actually very tall (6'1) and it took awhile for people to notice my weight gain. I remember going for my pre-op physical and the nurse being shocked that I actually weighed 321lbs. But since the surgery, I've rediscovered my love of physical activity. I actually look forward to my daily work outs and have to force myself to stop most of the time. I love have this much energy and I have a productive outlet for my competitive nature. I've known about this board since before my surgery but I normally just lurked. I had some problems earlier this week after a fill and decided that I definitely need to participate more with people that KNOW what I'm going through. So here I am! I'm looking forward to getting to know the Lap-band community!:tt2:

  9. Nancy - Barrett's esophagus is a precancerous condition of the esophagus. It results from food and acid splashing into the esophagus. The esophagus is not made to have these things there and cells start to change. The pictures of his endoscopy would show a pink esophagus with large patches of red (Barrett's) and they would biopsy every year. They will tell you that only a small % of Barrett's turns into cancer. Doesn't matter if you're one of them. Because it's a death sentence. It is more common in men and more deadly for some reason. And more common in smokers and drinkers. My husband was neither. My husband died at 56, his dad died at 58 of cancer of the stomach/intestinal area (he was a heavy smoker) and his grandfather died in his 40's of some type of stomach problem (we don't know for sure if it was cancer - it was so long ago). So 3 generations of men died early of cancer - something not lost on my son. Both he and my daughter participated in a study at the Cleveland Clinic. They had to send blood and I gave permission for a sample of my husband's tumor to be sent to them. They were looking for genes for esophageal cancer. This is why I am so concerned about my reflux. I know it's nothing to mess around with. I got breast cancer 7 years ago. I have never been a smoker but blamed my weight gain as an adult for it. Yes, smoking and coffee are bad for reflux as well as chocolate, mint and alcohol. Hope your husband gets checked and good luck.

    Too Tight or Just Right

I'm new to this site, I really need some advice. I had the lap-band surgery 04/2008. Immediately I starting losing weight. Walking everyday probably had more to do with it. I drop from 217 to 191, wasn't much but a lot when you don't lose none. I have missed two of my doctors visit, and was pretty embarrassed to go and see him after the holidays, due to weight gain. Along the way, I have been having some bad outcomes with now I know (P-Bing). It has gotten so bad that I can't get anything down. I had this feeling prior to the New Year, but once again afraid to face my surgeon with the weight gained. By the way I currently weigh 200...:tt2:. Last night I began eating my dinner, but had to stop as usual to let my food go down without getting stuck. Soon I was in the bathroom seeing it in the toilet. The entire night afterward was miserable for me. I even had to turn on my side to keep safe from (PBing) in my sleep. I thought the feeling will be gone this morning, only to realize i was more miserable than last night. I believe the two chocolate covered caramel candies I had ate earlier could have played a part in my miseries today. I'm still currently unable to put any solid down, or free fluid. I have managed to sip down a Low Carb Slim fast, as well as a Sugar free Milk Shake. This has me really worried. I have placed to emergency calls to my Surgeon Nurse, and i'm waiting her return call. I believe it this doesn't gets better, and she doesn't call me by noon tomorrow, I'm going to walk over to their office for an emergency. If you know what's going on, please lend me some advice. Thanks, gon2nj.

    update on me ...

Easy to say unless you have my obgyn. And I like to think it's only because of the special circumstances (pelvic kidney, not wanting C-Section as an option and baby needs to not be too big), and not that she's just a bitch about weight gain. But it really seems like--and she is gorgeous any way you put it. She looks like a slender sexy 20 year old.. when she's actually a 40 something mother-of-3 20 year olds (I still get hung up on her looks, I never believed she was her age). In any event, it's hard listening to her lecture about my gain.. although (Maybe I mentioned this?) I lost weight since my last appt. and the nurse weighing me said that and I'm like "YUP I am glad you noticed!!" and then when doc came in, she ALWAYS first said something about my weight gain--this time, she didn't even acknowledge the loss. Not even to say "You didn't gain"--nothing--not one word about the weight. Did rub me the wrong way. Too late in the game, but I kind of wish I had changed docs, she just doesn't make me feel warm and fuzzy. She was fine for a gyn, but as an obgyn I want someone who makes me smile and feels happy about the whole thing.. she always makes me feel uncomfortable and like I'm annoying her by being there, so I rarely ask questions.

    Exercising...but Gaining??

Thanks for the information so far! I did a little research on the Internet and the following is an excerpt from Chalene Johnson's Blog Spot The temporary weight gain explained: When someone starts a new exercise program, they often experience muscle soreness. The more intense and "unfamiliar" the program, the more intense the muscle soreness. This soreness is most prevalent 24 to 48 hours after each workout. In the first few weeks of a new program, soreness is the body trying to "protect and defend" the effected or targeted tissue. Exercise physiologists refer to this as delayed-onset muscle soreness, or DOMS. This type of soreness is thought to be caused by tissue breakdown or microscopic tears in muscle tissue. When this happens the body protects the tissue. The muscle becomes inflamed and slightly swollen with Fluid retention. This temporary retention of fluid can result in a 3- to 4-pound weight gain within a few weeks of a new program. Keep in mind that muscle soreness is not necessarily a reflection of how hard you worked. In fact, some people feel no signs of muscle soreness, yet will experience the muscle protection mechanisms of Water retention and slight swelling.

    Exercising...but Gaining??

When you start exercising, you can retain a bit of Water in your muscles which can account for weight gain. Muscle doesnt weigh more than fat, its just that a pound of muscle takes up less space than a pound of fat. People say it flippantly and its misleading, what it simply means is that if you have more muscle you'll weigh more. But its fantasy to think anyone can gain few pounds of muscle from doing a couple of weeks of cardio - most women wont gain that much after a year of weight training. The real truth is that when people first start exercising, its hard work, takes lots of effort and dedication but its not really that intense in terms of what exercise can be for someone who is fit and athletic and a seasoned exerciser. It is possible to burn 1000 calories in an hour running, but you sure as eggs cant do that when you start. A couple of hundred calories a day is not that huge an amount of calories to be burning, its not going to make THAT much difference. Also there's the tiredness you feel as a result of your efforts until you're more conditioned, you kind of slow down for the rest of the day and burn less calories overall which kind of nets out the exercise. Not to worry, if you keep at it, you get fitter and you will get to the stage where you can say go out for a run, come home and continue with your day without even feeling tired. You'll get there. You really have to watch what you eat too, its not uncommon to eat more as a result of exercising - it may make you hungrier or you may subconsciously think you can afford to because you've exercised. Weight loss still comes down mainly to diet. All those are factors why exercise may not give you the weight loss result you may expect - at first. Keep at it and it will pay off and at first cardio everyday is GREAT, its the best fat burner and that's what you want for the present time, to get rid of fat. Dont be discouraged by gain, it wont go far and it will reverse quickly.

This thread is going to be sooo inappropriate!

OK, Now I remember who you are as you changed your screen name too. You know I worry more about my daughter than myself. I know because I've gained back weight quickly twice that it happens. I know because I've seen all the famous people on TV who have had the RNY done and you see it come back on. My daughter is the only person I know personally who has had this surgery. She is only post-op May 08. I don't want my daughter doing an emotional downhill spiral if that happens to her. I suppose I've been prepared though for it from the beginning on how to help her. She's still in therapy and I think it helps her and am hoping that will help her also if/when that happens. Of course once she had the surgery I joined a forum just when I had questions as she is not a forum girl. I know from Obesityhelp.com's revision section that every surgery has been revised to every surgery. I think I've seen someone have 3 different ones, I don't know what the high number is yet. But I assume they all can fail in one way or another. I never go to the point where I lost the weight but gaining it back is very stressful on the psyche. Having WLS and gaining weight is very damaging to the psyche too. My psyche is a bit fragile so that's why I'm back and forth about what I'm going to do. Either way I'm damned if I do or damned if I don't! My opinion is that the sleeve wouldn't work for me if the lap band didn't work. Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think it's an option anyway. I remember you said you daughter had children too right? Do you think there is a connection between the pregnancy/(s) and the weight gain at all? My daughter has never had dumping syndrome, I guess I expected that to happen too.

    update on me ...

I agree that worrying about weight gain and our lifelong obsessions with body size are never more inappropriate than when we are pregnant. It's perfectly healthy and normal to be a bit bummed or annoyed even at the fact that we will have to work harder to lose weight after childbirth, but as long as weight gain during pregnancy doesn't affect our health or the health of our children, then it is merely something we should see with humor and grace as one more thing to worry about later on.

    Exercising...but Gaining??

I was banded on Feb 2nd. I lost about 20 lbs since then. As of the second day I have been walking 1 1/3 miles a day plus doing what I can on the Wii fit. Weighed myself today and I have gained almost 3 lbs! I have not cheated once, I have been on about 1100 calories aday average the last week. I am pretty upset right now and I do not understand the weight gain. It is bad enough that I feel no restriction and am doing this all on willpower because I want to be healthy but a 3 lb gain is ridiculous

    Brigham and Women/Faulker Hospital

At my age and with my past exercise experience...or should I say 'the lack thereof..., the reasonable method(I think) for me is my treadmill. Several yrs ago I ordered a good one from Sears and find that when I DO go on it I see a big difference. This LB 'quest' began when my PCP threw up her hands about my high blood pressure caused by the constant weight gain over the past 2 years. No matter the meds, NADA! So she had to resort to the 'pact'..and made me promise..handshake over it and all to seal the deal...that I would do 10 min a day. Well, (there's always a 'well 'and a 'but' when it comes to my weightloss). I went wild! I was 'Biggest Loser Solitaire' down there in the basement on my machine and went from 10 min to doing 2 miles a day...which is a great feat for a sedentary gal like me. And then I get proud and...quit. There is always something there to use up the exercise time. So the story continues..I start anew every now and then, reach 2 miles a day, lose some weight, stop, eat, gain Round and Round. And yes...I did almost fall off. I read rather than listen as I work, and one chapter was so intriguing I lost the rhythm of the pace and almost ended up face down! Not cute at all. I am not a Water drinker, so thought now is the time to start. Went to Walgreens, Shaws,Rite Aid..no Kellogg's Protein water mix ....finally found it at CVS. I guess it is a big seller..only 2 boxes on the shelf. So now I am trying to ease into it..Carnation Instants,Water and trying to lose 5 more lbs before going back to the dear doc in a few more weeks. In this stage of the PreBand Journey I am "Learning to embrace my hunger" as one famous talk show host said recently. The treadmill needs to be dusted. Hope to meet you also tinywishes! Hope you are doing better now. Have a good day all! singingintherain

    Anyone From Sacramento?

April: Just received your note, have you been on Norco, it is a stronger version of Vicodin, I took it for several months until the knees got so bad and was not cutting the pain, also check with a drug book and go over your medications you are taking along with the Percocet you can also ask the drugest about weight gaining medications or possiable weight gain medications you are taking. They said at the class they could not say it would effect everyone that way but I did notice everyone in the class I was in was struggling with weight gain. Some times I think they think all we do is sit around and eat bon bon's all day. I talked to the Richmond office and they said I was too early to worry about not making mandtory appointments, and the only think I had to do was to be sure to get a weight to they with in the month. The Pill book I picked up was from Wal Mart and was cheaper then the book stores around here. By the way your address says Sacramento, is that where you are? I am in Shingle Springs need the new Red Hawk Casino. I will close for now take care. Sincerely Judy:blush:

Thanks, Heidi. I changed my profile pic about a week ago and forgot to change the avatar pic, too! Congrats on the workouts. I'm training to run a 5K in 11 weeks, so I have been doing a training regime that will hopefully lead to my finishing the race and not being the last one, the fat girl at the end. I hope it will help me push off a little more weight in the process, though.....When are you going away and where to? Are you excited? Glad to hear you're working out. Initially you may experience some weight gain/stagnancy as your muscles retain Water, but it will dissipate as you continue to workout. Just don't get discouraged if that happens. I find I am so much better able to tolerate just about any foods after a workout! I love it. I'm so freaking sore right now, but happy it's over. Oh, and this is my vacation.

    update on me ...

notice i didnt mention HOW MUCH my Water weight gain was... (let's just say total gain is still more than yours...) i dont think we should obsess about weight gain right during pregnancy... i really dont... i mean 100 pounds, that would be an issue cause its not healthy, but 'average gain' is what 15-35? so you're a bit more than average ... so what. you'll drop it quickly ...
  21. Interesting what you say Caroline because I was surprised to be reading so much about weight gain and I didn't really understand why. I just have to see how it goes. If I have to unfill, even just some, I obviously will because my ability to drink water I understand is essential.

    Exercise and Health Issues

When I started going through menopause (at age 42) that was one of the FIRST symptoms. I have very thick hair and I was losing almost as much hair in a day as some people HAVE. It's worth checking out. Adding my estrogen patch did wonders for me! Here is a list of symptoms: Simple symptoms may easily be ignored but it's important to note that these symptoms have been reported by women experiencing menopause. If you have any of these symptoms, discuss them with your doctor during your next checkup. Hot flashes, flushes, night sweats and/or cold flashes, clammy feeling Irregular heart beat Irritability Mood swings, sudden tears Trouble sleeping through the night (with or without night sweats) Loss of libido Dry vagina Pain during sex Crashing fatigue Anxiety, feeling ill at ease Feelings of dread, apprehension, doom Difficulty concentrating, disorientation, mental confusion Disturbing memory lapses Incontinence, especially upon sneezing, laughing; urge incontinence Itchy, crawly skin Aching, sore joints, muscles and tendons Increased tension in muscles Breast tenderness Headache change: increase or decrease Gastrointestinal distress, indigestion, flatulence, gas pain, nausea Sudden bouts of bloat Depression Worsening of existing conditions Increase in allergies Weight gain Hair loss or thinning, head, pubic, or whole body; increase in facial hair Dizziness, light-headedness, episodes of loss of balance Changes in body odor Electric shock sensation under the skin and in the head Tingling in the extremities Gum problems, increased bleeding Burning tongue, burning roof of mouth, bad taste in mouth, change in breath odor Osteoporosis Changes in fingernails: softer, crack or break easier Tinnitus: ringing in ears, bells, 'whooshing,' buzzing etc.

Shrinkin' Violets Part 3 Read HERE!

I was up at 3am, this stupid nose allergy whatever this is thing. Strikes really bad in the middle of the night, I go through a box of tissues. and it itches SO BAD.. it wouldn't stop last night so I got up and got on the computer, read some forums. Finally got back to sleep around 5:45. Connor is actually a name I liked (middle school crush was named Connor) but Russ didn't like it Russ has lost 10lbs so far doing Atkins. I have plateaud (WHEW) again on my weight gain. I go back to the doc tomorrow, she has me coming in every 2 weeks now. Hope you're getting some good news Kat! I keep meaning to say WOOWOO Pam on all that you've done on the diss :cursing: Hope everyone else has a good day. BLEH Mondays  OH and Terry, I plan to take maternity leave for as long as I need to 2-6 weeks, and then I have a secretary office connected to my office that I am going to have Carson in (bought a portable crib for in there). I'll probably work half-days, or whole days depending on his temperment, etc. I am paid commission, and 99% of my customers communicate via e-mail, so I shouldn't miss too much with my blackberry and computer at home.
  24. Hi! I'm Marci, 41, and currently live in VA. I'm having my lapband done in Detroit tho. Does this mean I have to have all my fills done there also? What does the pre-op diet consist of and how long is it? My BMI is 38 - if I lose enuf before the surgery, does that negate my surgery if I fall below 35? I'm so depressed right now at my weight gain. I've always been overweight but got into shape while I was in the Army. Then I gained it back and then I lost 30 lbs in 4 months after my husband passed away 18 mths ago. Since then, I've steadily been gaining - over 70 lbs in the past year! And the thing is: I"M AN RD! I KNOW these things in my head, it's just doing them that's killing me. I've been off/on many diet over the past few months and don't relish the thought of yo-yo'ing again. So I thought I'd check out the lapband. My problem is: Who am I going to get to fill it? I'm not going to MI each time I need it filled. And do doctors who don't perform the surgery actually fill them? Thanks for my listening to me ramble. Just wanted to say hey!
  25. I'm back. I am now at Day 40 and still dont have any restriction. My next appointment is on the 24th Feb and I am hoping that they fill me to the top! At the moment it feels as though I have wasted my money on having the surgery - and it is money that my family could have used for other things. Any will power that I have shown over the last 7 weeks is all but gone. We have had heaps of social events lately and with all that yummy food and wine in front of me - I am struggling to stay away. I still don't think that I am eating the same amount as I used to, but I am really worried that I may have put weight on. Has anyone else been in this situation? Anyway.... enough whingeing for one night. What has everyone else been up to?
