On my day of discharge (less than 24 hours after surgery), I was barely getting a couple sips of fluids into my new, smaller, swollen stomach. The charge nurse gave me a bunch of 1 ounce medicine cups and told me "Drink one of these cups of Fluid every hour, and you'll be fine". I immediately felt much better. A one ounce medicine cup is much less terrifying than a 16 ounce bottle of sugar free Poweraide! Believe me, I got no where near 64 ounce of fluid those first couple weeks post-op, but eventually the swelling went down and I could increase my liquid intake. My surgeon was a realist who reminded me that I had gone from a 32 oz. stomach to a 4 oz. stomach. I had just had major surgery. He gave me permission to just relax and not force myself to the point of being sick. Give yourself time to heal. Everything will eventually fall into place.

got banded on 11/13/06-i'm on my way...
*susan* replied to nunziata's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi, congratulations on getting your band. Are you still on full liquids? I had problems with nausea and being dizzy for about the first 3 weeks. Once I got off of liquids and onto mushies, I felt much better and it went away. -

Yes dr mueller is awesome. You must be excited, and yes, let's absolutely keep in touch. Good luck next week! -
It's been 80 degrees for the last week. I'm really cold at night too. I think that it is a side effect of the band, but I am not certain. I too am taking baths and using my bed warmer tostay warm. That might be something to ask the doctor about too. I am going to ask mine when I go in for my next apt. on the 9th.

I thought my incisions would have been lower than where my doctor went in. I have about 7 cuts and I have three across where my bra goes. How am I suppose to put a bra on? Luckily I'm off of work for a week, but I am rather large chested and my boob seems to be irritating one incision spot. Any suggestions?

I did at first but not now. Mine was April 1st. I'm now having no problems getting fluids in and I can drink regularly and I prefer it ice cold. So. It took me a few weeks. I can't guzzle...but I can drink, not sip. Just give it time

after a fill you are supposed to go back to square 1 for a couple of days and progress to eating solid food again. I don't eat meat at all-- i drink Visalus shakes in the morning and for lunch and usually have chili, chowder or Soup for dinner. I do not eat bread Pasta, or anything that i think could get stuck. I am an OR nurse and we had a patient who tried to eat a sandwich1 month after surgery.... she ended up having to have the clog removed sugically. its not worth the problems... i love my shakes and they are so easy to make different each day and they are nutritionally perfect. I have lost 100 lbs. and work out with a trainer 4 times a week... never been happier. Good luck www.myvi.net/katelm

I bought Lap band for life a few weeks ago. I found it to be informative - in an infomercial sort of way. A good resource - but seemed like an advertisement. I also ordered WLS for dummies and it outlines all the different types of surgery available - not a ton of specifics on the band. In addition, I ordered The Real Skinny on Weight loss surgery which synopses says that it has the 'real' info on the band. I found that it had VERY LITTLE information on the band and focused on two by pass patients. I ordered Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding : Achieving Permanent Weight Loss in hopes that it will be another good resource. I plan on reselling the WLS for dummies and the Real Skinny book. If anyone knows of any other good books for bandsters - please speak up!!

I'm almost there. Got a call from my insurance yesterday on a different matter (about my knees) and that's when I told them that I was in the process of getting the surgery but hadn't turned in for approval. She asked me a few questions and then told me that unofficially I should have no issue getting approved. Then I got a call from my case worker at the surgery center and we talked about the fact that I am actually almost done. I have my sleep study this weekend and should know the results before the end of next week. She is going to turn in my insurance approval on March 11th and I should start my 6 week pre-op diet a week or two later. She is actually going to put me on the surgery calendar for May 7th but thinks that there is an earlier date. I will know more in a few days. As I get closer to my date more and more people are asking me about it and after almost 6 months prep I am more confident in explaining what will happen. I actually have this excited but scared way about it. The guy I go to lunch with told me this today and I didn't realize it. The more that I think about he is right. This is a life changing event and the closer I get to it the more I think about what it will be life 6 or even 12 months down the road. OMG...I am almost there but I have to say that I am real anxious about the whole thing. I have been telling people at work how weird it is going to be. I am going to be changing every week and the thought actually scares me. Not in a bad way but in a new and exciting way.

pros and cons of exercise
Ceradad replied to MADE IT 2 MY GOAL..OH YEAH's topic in Fitness & Exercise
As always, I couldn't agree more with luluc. I started walking immediately after my surgery. Two weeks out, I started lifting light weights per dr's instructions/permission and increased the amount of weight gradually. I've consistently done 6-7 days a week of cardio and 4 days a week of lifting for almost 13 mos now. I'm almost to goal (5 lbs away:thumbup:). I now have people tell me I am leaning out more than ever before. When I lift, I go at it HARD. I've gone from size 48" waist pants to almost a 36". Shirt size went from a tight 3XL to XL's hanging off me (except through the chest and shoulders:biggrin:). There is no excuse for not incorporating exercise into your lapband plan. Listen to all the people in here and you will succeed. Especially Jachut and luluc for women. They really know what they are talking about. -
This is all getting very real!

Congrats on your decision to have surgery . Im 7 weeks post op and so happy I did this. I was so scared before the surgery and for me that was the worst part of the whole thing. Prayers for a fast recovery. -
Next time I sleep in my bed I'll be sleeved!
minniekitty replied to NewLife2011's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Good luck! I was just at Mexicali last week to get my sleeve! Dr. Aceves and his staff are wonderful- you won't regret it My aunt and I had my "last meal" at the Colorado restaurant at that hotel. It was pretty good. There are some nice stores within walking distance too, if you're up to exploring. -
Surgery Fri......possible Sinus Infection
BeeBlueHeron replied to Michele1975's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No insight, just sympathetic. I was sick as a dog for the past week (surgery in Monday) but had time to get a Z-pack going and am finally feeling better. Still congested a little, and have that drip, but am determined to have it gone by Monday! -
My stats are almost identical to yours, only I'm STARVING. I'm scheduled for a fill tomorrow and it can't come fast enough for me. Having said that, I've stayed really close to the same diet as you and I also am only losing 1-2 pounds a week. This past week, I cheated once, went to Carlos Okelly's, had some drinks and chips and small dinner. It took me all week to get that weight gain back off, so for this week, I was ZERO pounds lost. :cursing: Hopefully I won't do that again any time soon. Sounds like you're doiing everything right, but I would'nt cancel that fill too soon. I noticed this past week I got hungrier and hungrier, so you may decide it would benefit you after all.

With both of my pregnancies now (currently almost 10 weeks pregnant) I was only able to keep my 'green zone' fill level in until last week. My body swells when I am pregnant and I get so tight I cannot keep food down. I had half of my Fluid taken out last pregnancy and gained 60 lbs! This time around, I only got 1.5 cc taken out so I can try to maintain some of the weight loss and not gain an excessive amount. I'm using My Fitness Pal again as well to try to keep myself in check. I know there are people who can go through all or most of their pregnancy without getting an unfill and some get it all taken out right away. It really just depends on your surgeon and your body! I wanted to wait longer to get an unfill, but I just couldn't do it!

I had a headache, too. About a week out. I think it was because calories were too low - 300 about.

My name is LaQuita and I had my first appt on Feb 22nd. Was so blessed to find out that our ins Co did not require any "hoops". No pshcy eval, no nut, no 6 Months waiting, nothing!!! I was SO excited. We have BCBS of TN BUT through my husbands Co there is a special provision for WLS so that none of this is required. Just a BMI over 40 /35 with Co mobidities. I' fit in the over 40 bmi. And proof of 5 years being "obese". I really don't like that word! I called yesterday and as of Friday the paperwork had been faxed over to BCBS for pre cert so I am waiting on them now. Aa of yesterday it wasn't showing up 'in the system, so I could not get an update from them. The surgeon won't see me and set a surgery date until he has surgical clearance from the ins. Co. So I'm waiting.......... I know after reading alot of others posts that this wait time is nothing compared to so many others. I just pray that the rest goes as smoothly. I've enjoyed reading all the tips / suggestions / and ideas u all have posted and I look forward to joining this 'club. Oh I forgot, I have had lap and surgery 2 times prior. First in 09, then I got food poisoning one time, started throwing up band prolapsed. Had to have it un-filled, then removed. Had 2 nd one put in in '10 then 8 months later I got the flu, it prolapsed too. It took several months to get it out. This was in Dec 11. I wanted the sleeve to start with in 08 but the insurance Co. Didn't approve them yet. Then in 10 when he took the first one out, he would only revise with a band not a sleeve. At the time I did not realize that other doctors would revise someone else work! You live & learn. Thankfully the Lord had lead me else where and Lord willing I will be having it within the next 4-6 weeks. Thanks again everyone for making this such an inviting & comfortable place to come! Blessings to u all!! First visit: Feb 22nd Faxed to Ins co March 2nd Waiting on pre-cert approval _CURRENT!

I had my band in April (didnt know I was pregnant at the time) and had a c section 7 weeks ago. All has been fine. I don't see why a section would have anything to do with a band or port, they are working inside the uterus not anywhere else.

Pain-hard spot at incision site - normal?
cejiogu replied to vsginkc's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes that is were most of the pain is because they work mostly through that hole. Also the stitch they use to close it is sort of like a spider web. As they pull out it closes. They usually use it when a person has a chest tube and they take it out after a lung has re inflated. It hurts for the first 3 to 4 weeks but better after. Sleep side to side and take pain med before so you can get some sleep! -
From the album: wls pre op to 52 weeks

Oh yeah- expect for it to be more intense for the first week and a half. The gas x strips to help a lot. Some of what your feeling too maybe the trapped air in your chest, from surgery. That will be absorbed over the next week, but it makes things uncomfortable I try to exhale when I swallow.. to take in less air. I'm not sure if it's working, but I think it is lol Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
