  1. What qualifies a person as a Vet? Can I claim that hat? I think there are so few because after the first couple of years we get less obsessed with weight loss and just go back to “ normal “ life. We don’t need the constant support and feel we should just be getting on with things. We come back when something has gone wrong and we are staring down the barrel of a revision. At that point we feel like we have a lot of experience but we are also confused and apprehensive and a little bit scared. Can we do it again and be successful. Will we survive that bl@@dy awful preop diet for a second time etc I know what worked for me the first time was education education education.

    Other reasons for surgery

I had my Lap Band removed last April and awaiting revision to RNY also. And yeah I'm having to do the regular pre op program with my surgeon...

    Psychiatric Evaluation

Yup...Want to know why you want the surgery so they can make sure it's for the right reasons such as health, more mobility, less aches and pains etc vs because you want to get a boyfriend/girlfriend, become popular etc. They do make sure you don't have an eating disorder, want to make sure you realize it's a life long decision and they want you to know you can call on them for any questions you have afterwards. They help make sure you're in the best mindset for the surgery and have realistic goals. I really liked my therapist and only had to see her for two required visits. I had started seeing a therapist who deals with food issues outside of the bariatric center before I even started with them just to make sure I have the tools I need to make the right decisions eating wise and dealing with the head hungry issues. But then again I've gone the bariatric route before with my lapband so I knew already that I wanted to make sure I had the help with this more permanent change. My lapband had to be removed after it prolapsed really badly - I had already had it revised once before. So having gained almost all my weight back I knew I wanted the help to keep me on the right track after this surgery as well. It's been a great help. There are a lot of great books that help too. Good luck with your appointments
  4. Hi Back with update. sitting in hospital bed in Tijuana right now. Had my surgery yesterday with Dr Kuri and he was successfully able to remove my band and revise to sleeve! Wooooo!! I wa sworried because of the pain,I had erosion, but it was prbabaly just some infection around the tubing. So happy I stuck to my guns and did not have the removal surgery only in the states and have to wait 3 months for new surgery.. Now on to recovery and figuring out how to live with the sleeve..

Help! Kaiser or Anthem BC (in California)?

No...West LA surgeons are more prone to just take out band, but not revision. Request Harbor City. I went to West LA earlier in the year. Email your doctor, ask him to send referral to Dr. Gary Belzberg.

Help! Kaiser or Anthem BC (in California)?

Just a quick update... I'm going to stick with WLA. It's just closer and linked to my home hospital, Woodland Hills. Doctor will do the revision all at once. Since my band has been empty since August and my upper GI came back normal, he doesn't expect any issues once he goes in. I'll also have to go through the Options classes. I've accepted it and will go through the motions while I try not to gain any more weight. Plus I'm so crazy busy at work right now that I wouldn't know how to pass it off while I'm out. At least this way I can have a good plan in place. I expect to have surgery in August.

I'm In Az Looking For A Buddy

Hi everyone, I have been looking for you guy's since the end of June..I just can't tell you how much this means to me to finally find you  I have tried unsuccessfully to find Zonies and here you all are! Thank you Lilly, I would love to have you as a sleeve buddy, bsmith thanks for your best wishes. I'm so excited I just don't know what to say. I am a revision, I had my band out June 26th, I couldn't get the revision done as it had eroded, thankfully not to much damage, but enough that I had to wait until the end of Oct. I just can't imagine what you went through bsmith, what a incredible story. I am a nurse and you are one lucky Lady! I to would love to meet each and everyone of you...Thank you for being here!!! Debbie
  8. I've had the band for five years - revising next month. Very similar experience. I lost about 20 lbs in the first 6 months then another 30 over another 2 - 3 year period. It took quite a bit of fill/unfill to get somewhat decent restriction but I never had great restriction. I found I had to really have more self control than anything else - which annoyed me as I thought that band would help more with that! The biggest things that helped me avoid being stuck were taking TINY bites. Chewing more than you ever think you need to, and taking more time between bites. I also had horrible time with chicken and scrambled eggs were always a no-go. I could eat an omelet though and would make 1 egg omelets. Dark meat chicken would be better, but white meat was just too dry.
  9. Wow. Thank you so much for telling your story. I sincerely appreciate your honesty. And the words of wisdom, to "never give up" ...so powerful and so true. We are in this fight for life and I know that sometimes I do feel like giving up. But then I know what the consequences of giving up mean. So sorry about the DS not working out but enlightening to know about your friend who revised. At some point the surgery will only take you so far and the rest is up to you. Thank you again for sharing your story with us.

    Tomorrow is the day

Back at home after being sleeved on Monday. I feel pretty good, considering they took some stuff out - lol. I had a revision - sleeve with lap-band removal. I can already tel how different this experience will be from the lap band and much more successful. - The sleeve sure makes me "accountable" for how much and how quickly I ingest fluids. After two days of having nothing, though, vegetable broth never tasted so good! I weighed myself when I got home and seem to have actually gained a little since before the surgery - I"m sure that has everything to do with having an IV in for two days. Morphine is awesome - I will miss my new friend now that I'm home - lol. Not really that much pain though, other than the expected "gerd" feeling if I drink too fast. Can't wait to hear about everyone else's journey and see the changes. Personally, I can not WAIT for the blood sugar levers to go down for me Happy New year all - 2014 will be awesome for all of us! Jennifer

    Not losing!

    What revision did you have?
  12. I would think that the doctor would tell you if you do. If he is only revising port, then I would guess not.
  13. I had port revision 3mths post op, no diet before hand. Port isn't placed by liver, like the band. PS port revision was so much easier than lbs. good luck!

Do any of you get "crap" from RNY

oh good lord get a grip. you have at any point, in any forum to move past any offensive post. how though did i badmouth RNY by just posting an experience of MINE? and my friend? - who is now on her second revision surgeon consult. get your anger in check - when i suggest you enjoy your forum where you can enjoy a similar surgery path with those of the same was not to shun or send you on your way .... have a party here. i wished you well, as i would any WLS patient - i do HAVE the right to post my stories as do you.

    Not losing!

I am also a band-to-bypass revision patient and my first month was very slow. I stalled early on and the stall lasted a couple of weeks, but once I was able to eat actual food I started losing weight. I am now 4 months out and have lost about 55 pounds since surgery. Weight loss for me has definitely been slower than it was early on with the band, but I feel soooo much better with bypass than I did with the band and I am down 71 pounds from my highest weight (in December at band removal), so bypass is definitely working for me. Hang in there. The first month is not an indicator of how things will go for you moving forward. Your body is still adjusting to the major shock from this surgery and you are pretty much just trying to meet Protein requirements and getting your Fluid in at this point. Once you are on a good eating and exercise regimen you will lose. It's very disheartening to not see the scale move when you are expecting it to, but it WILL move, believe me. Congratulations on taking this step toward your future health. There are a lot of us who have converted and I am seeing many, many success stories with revision on this forum. I expect you are going to be another one!
  17. **********NECROPOSTING ALERT*********** I TOTALLY MISSED THIS WHOLE THREAD Probably because on 7/15 I was in the hospital being revised from VSG to RNY and NOT FOR REGAIN 😂 I don't know why others post the way they do but, the reason I chose to include that bit of info is because: I didn't want to assume everyone knows my whole story (some people may have just joined that day etc) I wanted to be clear as possible so when some one runs a search for info here on BP they find exactly what they are looking for I wanted to share my specific experience and because the stories/ questions/ support/ techniques/ insurance rules/ *plans/ *preop /*postop may change vastly depending on why you need a revision its not helpful to lump it together. Can you imagine being asked nonstop in DMs if you lost all of your excess weight then having to explain you didnt have any excess weight/ you were at goal already Or never being asked if your stenosis was properly bypassed/GERD resolved/ torsion corrected/anatomy fixed because no one knew that was the reason for the revision. Or telling people that insurance approved it in 48 hrs, but not explaining that it was likely because it was emergent in my case and highly unlikely to get approved that quick or even the first time on a weight regain only case. For me it was about clarity & I hope my input helped 💙
  18. I'm not even sure if I feel really angry about this or not or if I even have any particular feeling about it at all. However, I think sometimes I have some kind of a WTF-expression on my face when I read about someone getting a revision and emphasizing that it's not because of "weight". Like "You're getting a revision because of some serious sh*t and it's that important to make clear it's not because you've gained weight?!". In the end, what does it tell about a community when its members feel the need to make absolutely and 110% clear in advance that they're getting their revision not because of "weight"?
  19. Denied:( they approved the removal of my band but not a revision due to my bmi being 37 with no comorbidities. They said I have to start all over again.... Supervised diet for 6 months etc.... (Which I won't get approved anyway cause bmi is under 40) I was self pay for the bank 1 1/2 years ago.... I'm devastated.
  20. In Germany there is the possibility of a planned second surgery in the case of very heavy patients. So it's not seen as a revision but an already planned second surgery. People get a sleeve resection first as the initial part of a BPD/DS, lose some weight with that and then a year later get the full DS. I don't know how common that really is though.

    Band Has slipped Upwards

Hi all: I think that the band slipping upwards from what I understand is rare. My band is sitting where the esopogus joins the stomach and usually the stomach will slip up through the band and then it is further down on the stomach. I am after much thought and reflection leaning towards a revision to the sleeve. I know that without something to restrict my eating I will be back where I started in no time. At this point I have zero restriction and find myself eating way to much of everything - which is why I had the band in the first place. I guess at this point I could have the band repositioned but I have been told that if your band has slipped once that you will be prone to that again. I am a self paying Canadian and it is becoming very hard to find someone to do fills for us here in Alberta - so I am thinking maybe I should just go for a sleeve and be done with continuing expenses and the possibility of a slip and an another trip and surgery
  22. Lol, I did keep my lapband when I revised to the sleeve. I still have it in a little plastic bag in my closet, trying to determine an appropriate burial for it.
  23. I had a revision to RNY due to gerd on 2/28. When I had my barium swallow it looked like I had a gastric fundus that had grown at the top of my sleeve, but when the surgeon went in my sleeve was fully intact, with no fundus and minimal stretching. My insurance would not have covered a resleeve. My doctor would never perform a resleeve as he says it's too risky although I have read some promising research that it can be done safely and is a good means to restart weight loss. However, it wouldn't have fixed my problem of gastritis and reflux. I had my sleeve 7 years ago. Good luck to you!
  24. I see my surgeon in 3 weeks at which point I am hoping he will give me the go ahead for a revision from band to RNY. I am hoping I can still get a date this year as my 25th anniversary is mid Feb and hubby and I are wanting to go on a short trip, preferably somewhere warm with sea and sand. I want to be far enough out from surgery that I can eat "regular" food ( as opposed to still being in the soft or puree stages and also don't want to have any other issues. What are the general recommendations for international travel after bariatric surgery?

    Does anyone still get "stuck"?

Best to revise to Gastric Bypass (MGB or RNY) instead of Sleeve to minimize acid reflux, which is common with VSG.
