The 10 year Swiss study also supports the Dutch results. It hasnt been a success long term. And erosion of the stomach is a real concern. My experience long term confirms this and after 7 years I'm revising to bp. Sent from my GT-I9505 using the BariatricPal App

I had the band for 4 years and severe reflex also indegestion. The doctor told me I should revise to sleeve I have 50 pounds to lose. Today was my surgery date and I went in very worried that if I did the sleeve I would have more acid reflex and its unreversable procedure. This morning I backed out and removed my band only. I refused to do the sleeve last minute. I don't know if I did the right thing but I was afraid of getting worse. Now I am hoping I can get back to normal from constant sore throat from the acid and dry mouth also white tongue all caused by my band.

How to break a long stall?
RickM replied to Packerfan61964's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You've made great progress to lose that much in 8 months, but now you are in maintenance rather than a stall. To get things moving again you probably need to drop your intake by 500 calories or so per day to get things moving again, and probably somewhat more than that to take it all the way to your goal (your current stability/maintenance point will drop somewhat as you lose - takes less energy to move 180 lb around than 240). Fiddling around with carbs or salt can help break a stall that is created by Water retention issues and may help cravings if those are your particular weak points, but won't overcome a lack of caloric deficit. Revising to an RNY might help you as you will be starting from scratch again with the stomach restriction and the malabsorption does tend to give a bit of an extra kick to the weightloss, tho that is a temporary effect that lasts a year or two and then you are back to a similar metabolic state as you are in now with the sleeve. That along with its tendency toward reactive hypoglycemia leading to inter-meal hunger often drives regain in bypass patients. Overall, the bypass is very similar in performance to the sleeve, though that temporary malabsorptive kicker might be enough to get you over the hump and into a lower stability point, though you do have to consider the cost of doing so (not just financial, but the different drawbacks and limitations that one gets by moving to the different WLS.) So, look carefully at what your diet is now and where you can make adjustments before leaping to a revision. Also, if you decide that you are stuck enough to consider revision to complete the job, you should also have the DS on your radar as a more powerful tool than either the sleeve or the bypass. It has a somewhat different set of tradeoffs (though not markedly different than the bypass,) but it should be looked into before a revision rather than discovering later that you need a second revision (have seen a couple band - bypass - DS revisions go through our support group in the past couple years.) Good luck on getting things back on track, -
Barrett's Esophagus
1959JimmyJames replied to Wendydarling19's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
This is my case and my opinion. This is very serious and you should consider all options. I had heartburn symptoms going back 15 years. I had gained a lot of weight and my symptoms got worse. After about 5 years of eating tums everyday I finally gave in and started seeing a doctor. He sent me for an upper GI and they said I was stage 3 Barretts. The doctor suggested a lap band to help control weight. I agreed and insurance covered it. I have been on nexium 20 mg a day for the past 10 years. After much success with the band for 8 years I developed complications from the band. 10 years ago the sleeve wasn't perfected like it is now. We discussed a band to sleeve revision and I agreed and so did the insurance company. I have had the sleeve for 2 years now. It is so much better than the band but the acid problem is only controlled with nexium. I dont have more reflux since the surgeries. With nexium i feel nothing, only relief. Herbal remedies or diet do not work for me. I have to have an upper GI every 3 years to monitor the Barretts and they always do a biopsy and so far it is still stage 3 Barretts. I am aware of the risks with these drugs but nothing else works for me. I have blood work every 6 months and I am under a doctors care. That's just the way it is. This surgery is very serious. In my case the co-morbidity problems worked in my favor because the insurance board agreed with the doctors that there was a good chance the acid would be reduced because of a smaller stomach. That didn't work in my case. I still have the acid reflux pain if I stop taking the drug so I continue taking it. I think that I probably would have some kind of gastrointestinal cancer by now without the benefit of modern medicine. I would never tell anyone to get a lap band. Don't do it. A sleeve can't be reversed. Its forever. So it is a very serious decision. I am happy with the sleeve. My weight and bmi are in the normal healthy range. My blood pressure is normal and my lab work is good. They say that I am pretty healthy except for the problems already mentioned. I feel good. This is a lot to say in just one post. I haven't run across very many patients with Barretts. -

Sleeve to MGB Revision/ Resleeve & Bypass or Just Bypass
NuHorizons posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi I'm researching getting a revision from a VSG to a MGB. I was sleeved in July 2010. I never experienced the "Honeymoon phase" and my weight loss was slow from the beginning. I was able to lose 80 lbs over two years with dieting and vigorous exercise, but now my weight is rapidly creeping back up. I have a few questions for those who went from a sleeve to a Mini Gastric Bypass. Did your surgeon resleeve you and then bypassed you or did he/she bypass you only. I watched a few revision videos from Dr. Rutledge and he doesn't recommend resleeving unless the sleeve is very large or deformed due to the increased risk of complications when resleeving. Are you satisfied with the outcome of the MGB and would you recommend your Surgeon? Also, if you can please list your Surgeon's name I would appreciate it. Thanks -

@@Spiceyfrog Thanks! i was told about the medical bra - sounds less than comfortable. Have to wear it for 4 or 5 days. Then I can shower and switch to a sports bra (yay). My surgeon said there's no point to go below 300cc. Anyone who she's done who insisted on anything smaller than that was disappointed. So I'm not worried about her going small. I actually prefer to be on the smaller side - so when she said upwards of 400cc for me I think she saw the look on my face, lol. It's a trade off between filling up the loose skin and not being that lady with the big fake boobies. If they could actually go with a cup size, I'd want a C. So when we start talking 400cc, I start to get a little freaked. Wish I could be awake and approve them during surgery :-) The "balancing act" as I call it is tough... We want that symmetry. Good luck with your revision surgery in June!! -

How are you doing with your revision?
jnt1 replied to UsernameTaken's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Oh i am so happy to read your story! I'm having revision from band to bypass on April 19th and i am terrified! My biggest fear is that i will never be able to est "normal" foods again....like a nice salad or grilled fish or beef. I dont care about large portions...just to have the variety. Please tell me your experiences with eating now that you are about 4 months post op? Cant wait to hear your story! Sent from my GT-I9505 using the BariatricPal App -
Hi everyone its so good to read your stories! Im having a band to bypass revision on 19th April and I'm scared as hell!!! I had initial success with the band in 2009 but by 20011 i was in and out of emergency like a revolving door. What a nightmare. I thought it was me all along. But now i know it was really the band as it has proven to be a pretty useless device long term. I lost weight by starving myself. Couldnt eat a nice healthy salad. .only sloppy foods..... So now that im going with the bypass im so afraid that i wont be successful and also that ill be destined to a life of yoghurt and sloppy foods. An people who have had the bp please tell me what and how they eat now...at varying stages post surgery? Im hoping that a year down the track i can eat a healthy salad and a piece of fish? Or some grilled meat and steamed vegetables? I couldnt do that with the band. I spent half my life vomitting and the other half starving! Alo, is it true that you lose your appetite...because thats what im really looking forward to! Sent from my GT-I9505 using the BariatricPal App

Spiceyfrog replied to amazon's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
Front opening bra for sure and I would recommend purchasing two. I wore mine 24-7 for the first 4-6 weeks and it's easier to wash one when you have another one on hand. I was sent home in a horrible surgical bra, so that did not help. If they give you a decent one, you can rotate that with your sports bra. One thing to keep in mind (my surgeon did not tell me this), is that there may not be room for the size you want once they get into surgery. I requested a minimum of 400 on my larger side and then whatever it took for the smaller side to look equal and he agreed. I woke up with 260 and 340, HUGE disappointment, but I came to grips with the fact that he did what was medically safe! I am scheduled to have a revision (larger implant on one side and making the aerola smaller on the other) June 29th. Best of luck to you! -
*MALE ONLY* How long did it take you to get your approval from insurance?
NoMoBand replied to illailla's topic in The Guys’ Room
My paperwork was submitted early on a Tuesday morning, I had my approval by that afternoon. I couldn't believe it! I guess it all depends on the work load. I should mention that mine was a very unexpected revision. I didn't have to go through any of the hoops that one normally goes through because I already had a lap band. I was lucky because some insurance companies require that you go through all the consults and evaluation from the beginning. -
Hiatal hernia and Sleeve
1959JimmyJames replied to kleeper's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had a band to sleeve revision and a hiatal hernia repair all at the same time. Surgery took 4 hours and I had no complications during or after surgery. I was really sore and in a lot of pain for about a week afterwards but I got through it. I am over 2 years post op now. I feel really good and all my lab work is excellent. When you start eating solid food again make sure you measure everything. After a while of doing this you will be able to eyeball it. Don't overeat. Protein first. No liquids an hour before during or after meals. You will get used to this routine and eventually you can eat whatever you want and even sip wine with your meal or some other beverage during your meal. No carbonated drinks though. Can't have the bubbles expanding in your stomach. I really miss drinking cold beer. When I say that you can eat anything that you want that means a portion only. You will not be able to eat very much but it can be anything that you want. That's the beauty of it. I don't feel deprived like when you are on a diet. I can go to the fridge and make myself whatever I am in the mood for. My wife can cook anything that she wants because I can eat it. I end up throwing most of it away but I feel satisfied. Good luck. -
Band removal covered- what can I expect to pay out of pocket?
UsernameTaken replied to secondchance_tx's topic in Insurance & Financing
I am having a revision, but mine is approved by my ins. I started out the same way, just wanted to get the band out but I figured well might as well see if they will approve revision as well. Hope it will go well, the closer it gets to it the more nervous I get. -
I've never in my like had problems with acid reflux - even before the band. I'm 2 months out from band to sleeve revision. With the band I had for 6 years. The only time I had reflux with the band was when it was too tight, which seemed to be anytime there was anything in there to give me restriction. Once the bad land was unfilled the reflux went away. I've been having mild reflux after the sleeve. I take protronix which is working just fine to keep the reflux under control. I was told it would probably even go away and actually I'm wondering if it is because I used to wake up feeling it and took my medicine right away. Now when I wake up it doesn't seem to be there, but I'm still taking the medication. I may just stop taking it and see what happens. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Waiving the 6 month requirement?
Mom_of2boys replied to Joyecamp1992's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Alot of BCBS plans revised the requirements for the surgery in March of 2015. I have BCBS of MA and they do not require 6 months supervised anymore. However, you still have to do the psych eval and a nutrition eval. -
GP says to do Weight Watchers instead
2Anne replied to careya123's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Because I am 68 it could be the case that I will be refused the surgery as one surgeon has already said he will not do the sleeve or bypass on me due to this. I am seeing a surgeon on 27th April so hope he will give me the go ahead. If not as a diabetic I can try Forxiga which aids weight loss or there is Byetta or Eraglatide which are anorectics. These drugs are only used in type 2 diabetes. I know the surgery is risky but so is being very obese as my BMI is 38 and rising. My gastric band was in for 15 years and a lot changed in Bariatric surgery during this time. If there had been a revision say 7 years ago there would be no problem re my age so my advice is if you are fit and well and have a BMI over 37 and a chronic weight gain problem WLS is the way forward. -
Stretched Pouch
bikerchick519 replied to rblakely63's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I love how people say the sleeve doesn't stretch but I have a written report from a weight loss surgeon who did my EGD that clearly says my sleeve was stretched on the top and the bottom and needed a revision surgery. Just because yours hasn't stretched doesn't mean someone else's didn't. Every sleeve is different and not every surgery was done the exact same way. -
