    February 2022 Surgery Buddies

I’m getting sleeved on 2/17!!! I start my liquid diet on 2/7. This whole time I was so worried about gaining weight and my insurance would deny me. I told my surgeon that today and he told me my insurance doesn’t require that I not gain weight. But luckily I still weighed in at the same amount I was during my consult in June 2021. I’m getting my procedure done at VHC in Virginia and I have Aetna better health (Medicaid).

    January Surgery buddies

Hi Dcsjoc, I myself just had the sleeve surgery on 1/13/22, and I can tell you the days just prior, I was feeling second thoughts. Mine I think was a mixture of two things. One was I have already been doing great losing weight on the pre-surgery diet so maybe I don't need to do it, and the second was the feeling of loss, anger, and frustration over all the things that I will no longer be able to eat and also the amounts. I realized that both (in my case) are due to fear and control. Fear of losing comfort and wanting to control everything. I have to keep reminding myself that I did not in fact have control and to keep out of fear I have to stay in the moment and not let my head think about results and the future. I have to stay in the process and simply take it step by step. Now that I am on the post-surgery diet it's funny how much I miss the protein shakes. The message boards/forums here on this site have helped me so much. I hope the same for you.

90 Minutes of Cardio Every Morning

I have come to love morning workouts...I feel so accomplished and ready to start my day afterwards. I get up before anyone else in the house to go ride the stationary bike and it's my own private time to dedicate to me and being healthy. I also workout after my kiddo goes to bed. 3 days a week I spin for 30-45 minutes in the morning and then run on treadmill for ~30 minutes in the evening. 3 other days a week I do a 1 hour Crossfit class in the morning and then do 30 minutes of yoga in the evening. 1 day per week I ride the bike and then do some kind of cross training (bootcamp class, rowing, whatever). But I have been told that I do *way* more than the average WLS patient. I do it because I enjoy it though not because I *have* to. This is the part of my life that was missing/unavailable at a higher weight!

I've regained the weight I lost

Please don’t forget to contact your Surgeon/team. Don’t be embarrassed to ask for their help. Perhaps you can get a good look at how to optimize your diet with a nutritionist, habit building with a therapist and there are a lot of new weight loss medications recently approved that may help before revision surgery is needed. Good Luck ❤️

    Low BMI pre op question

I think you are getting upset at people for just sharing and trying to help you out. Ultimately it is your body and your life. I was mandatory therapy by my surgeon before I had it so if you have a good Dr he/she should have you do that preop anyway. If not I would ask them for a referral or seek another Dr. You need a therapist who understands eating disorders and WLS. I hope the best for you! But be patient with people on here and don’t ask for advice and get angry at us. A lot of people have struggled with weight their entire life - I never did until 2018 when I was in an accident and after a few surgeries and a week in the hospital I was on a year of steroids. I went from 135 to 245 in a year and fought to get it down to 227 before I chose WLS. I’ve lost 30 pounds and am happy with that but frustrated I couldn’t do it myself. So when someone starts off at 300+ and sees you have a BMI under 30 it is frustrating to see you feel you need the surgery rather than do it on your own. I started with 35 BMI today my BMI is 31 - today after surgery on 12/22/2021 and 30 pound weight loss, you are lower than me - see my point? For the most part I feel people on here are very kind but also speak the truth 99% of the time. Again it’s your life and your body but don’t get so angry with all of us trying to help you. Good luck I’m leaving this post. It’s becoming a bit toxic for me I do wish you the best in whatever you choose

    Low BMI pre op question

Mexico will do anyone. I know a lady that needed 25 pounds off - as per her I thought she looked great - went to Mexico got it done. So yeah there’s Drs that do it regardless of your BMI or weight loss amount needed.

    Low BMI pre op question

I have 50 pounds to lose. BMI 29.85 is not low. Sorry I don’t meet your requirement for surgery but if you read the research 30 BMI is acceptable and have actually had better outcomes than higher bmi’s. I don’t want to wait until I’m morbidly obese because some a-holes on a random website said i should. My weight has been creeping up for years. I am not nuts people just looking for help. I would love a referral for counseling from minigastricbypassdude if you are willing to share.

I've regained the weight I lost

All of the above is solid advice. You don't need a "pouch reset" you just need to get back to basics. Weigh & track everything you eat. Prioritize protein first, then fiber full veggies next. Get your water in. Take your vitamins/supplements. Move your body with intention. I would also STRONGLY suggest counseling to work on the mental/emotional stuff. This journey is so much more than just the weight. Getting help to manage stress and anxiety, learning new coping mechanisms, and changing your relationship with food is all critical work. You are never too far gone and you haven't failed! We are cheering you on!
  11. Ok doesn’t look like anyones been here for a bit except me lol. I have a question - I’m down 30 pounds and 29.75 inches. Last week I finally broke a stall and went down 3 pounds. Weird thing is I actually should be down 37 inches but gained inches in my biceps and one thigh - weird I know I think it’s lump fluid because I had the lump nodes removed from that groin as a teenager. I’m 4 weeks one day out. Has anyone else had similar changes in inches? Loosing and regaining? I’m thinking my arms may be muscle because I have been doing some arm weight exercises just 2 pounds. TIA

    Exercise videos for 60 +

HI, I looked over the topic headings but could not quickly find a matching question. I am 64 years old, soon 65. Since my surgery on September 1, 2021, I have walked or bicycled on a recumbent bike 30-40 minutes almost every day. (I did almost nothing before). Now the cold weather with snow has set in, and the bicycle gets boring. I am looking for suggestions for a good senior training / exercise video, something I can get on DVD. I have some weights. Probably beginner level, but progression would be nice. We are far away from the nearest gym, so I'm hoping to find something I can use at home. I've lost 78 lbs, so I am feeling much better about exercising! Do have knee and balance problems. Thanks!

    Pain post op

Yes. I had the exact same pain as well. My doctor said it was incision pain due to all of the numbing meds wearing off. I wore a stomach binder to keep the weight of my stomach from pulling ion my incisions on the right side. It worked and now the pain has disappeared. I am 5 weeks out from surgery. The pain started around week 3 but it is completely gone.

    Giving Dumbbells a Try

These dumbbells were delivered to me yesterday that I had ordered on Wal-Mart.com. I wasn't expecting them until tomorrow. I'm looking forward to incorporating these into my fitness routine. I do 90 minutes a day of cardio. But sometimes at home in the afternoon I do more cardio and I've been using soup cans to add resistance. Now I have 3 lb, 5 lb and 8 lb weights to use. I found some great arm toning 10-minute workouts on YouTube. Naturally I can do some heavier lifting and use the strength training machines at the gym, but these small light dumbbells are just for home incidental use when I have a few extra minutes and some extra energy to enhance my gym workout. While I would actually like to add some arm muscle, I guess I'd be happy to just tone what I already have.

    Low BMI pre op question

Have you considered talking to a therapist while pursuing surgery? The borderline weight issue may be worked better with if you're in that borderline situation by taking care of the mental health side. That was borderline one of the best decisions I made.

    Low BMI pre op question

Yes you are nuts!! You asked I gave you an honest answer. Why on earth would you try to keep your bmi above 30 just so you can have an unnecessary surgery with your low bmi. Bloody hell woman surgery is not easy or a quick fix, it's hard and some days just plain horrible. Go see a shrink about your weight/ eating issues. I doubt any surgeon would do you with such a low BMI anyway and if they do I would expect they are very dodgy
  17. I had buyer remorse but it does get easier. Gatorade sugar free was my savior. I’d mix it 1/2 and 1-2 with Water. You’d be surprised how fast you will be able to drink more. The first few days are rough and now I’m 4 weeks out I’m eating real food though soft and I feel human again. My little tummy is pretty happy most of the time now it just really hates all Beans in any form or variety. I still sip water and let me tell you I didn’t o ce just not thinking and it hurt like hell for a good 10 minutes - not worth it trust me. Take it easy I named my tummy little turd because it has a mind of its own. Kinda helped honestly I mean we go through the pain of having a baby and this baby is so worth it and needs taken care of with this we get nothing. So now I have my little turd who gets taken care of like a newborn (except the name of course.) and when it acts up it’s like a new baby needing something - a drink or a burp. I want to keep it happy and healthy so slow she goes lol Hang in there you’ve got this and watching the weight come down will out the biggest smile on your face - trust me you will be just fine

    Just not hungry.

My Dr told me set an alarm I’m to eat 6 small meals a day around 200 calories. Honestly I just turn the alarm off and finish what I’m doing 1/2 the time I forget until the next alarm goes off. I’m lucky to hit 700 calories a day but I’m only 4 weeks post op. Take some hair and nail Vitamins I had someone who had VSG tell me that and she didn’t loose very much like not even noticeable. Food is yucky to me too but I know my body needs nutrition. Good on the weight loss! Hope you can find something you like!

    Low BMI pre op question

Honestly if you only have 30 pounds to loose do it without surgery. Go vegan for a month or try something but I wouldn’t have surgery. I went raw vegan and lost 20 pounds easy and felt great and full. I had to go off because life happened but I didn’t regain it. I am happy with the progress I have had the past 4 weeks since VSG but I honestly wish I had given myself more time being vegan and waited on the VSG. I was loosing more and faster, felt better, and had energy like I haven’t had since a kid. So no don’t do it for a small amount of weight. It isn’t the easy road or just to do for vanity. It’s rough - like reading, watching etc what others say about it still doesn’t prepare you for how rough it is. And you will have 6 scars from it. If your minds made up then go for it! And I dropped to 31 BMI day of surgery it didn’t matter it mattered what I started with. I wish I had asked more questions like you are - I would not have done the surgery. But I did and I’m happy with the results. I hope you will be too! Good luck with whatever you decide!
  20. 4 weeks out today VSG 12/22/21, and my Nutritionist started letting me eat real food ie soft real food Saturday and I had some chicken omg it was Heaven. Started the liquid diet before thanksgiving so it’s been awhile for me since I’ve eaten real food. My weight was 197 today so 30 pound total loss from liquid to today. The only thing I’m dealing with is I’m severely allergic to eggs now - big welts so Dr saw them said yep full blown allergy and my tummy hates Beans - all Beans I’ve tried them refried, hummus and I made pinto beans with ham for the family - had them in the crockpot 12 hours ate a few chewed well and back up they came. So I hope this resolves because I eat a lot of beans pre the VSG. I totally forgot to eat most of the mid morning to about 4 today and only got in around 500 calories. Other than that I’m super excited about where I am at. I still feel tenderness if I over do things on my right side where they removed the stomach but that’s it! No brain fog or vision issues at all.  Glad to see you guys doing good and glad to finally be moving from the dreaded stall lol!

    Low BMI pre op question

I agree with what @ShoppGirl said. Many use not just your weight before the pre surgical diet but your weight when you begin the whole approval process. Have you been approved? You said you’re committed to surgery in April. Have you begun your approval process? Your weight at surgery may not be a consideration at all but ask your surgeon or team to be sure. The surgery is a tool & like any tool if you don’t use it & take advantage of what it can offer, it won’t work. Many of the benefits post surgery (like loss of appetite & hunger) are only temporary. The surgery is not a guarantee of permanent weight loss. That is up to you. Your physiology & psychology will influence how successful you are. As @ShoppGirl said if you don’t make permanent changes to how, why & what you eat you will regain your weight. It’s a simple truth. But one you need to be fully aware of when making your decision to have surgery. It may be helpful if you see a therapist who specialises in bariatric patients & eating disorders. Your surgeon, doctor or medical team should be able to recommend someone. Many, many people here have sought support from a therapist before & after surgery. It’s not easy to reflect on your eating habits & drives (cravings, emotions, etc.) alone & a therapist will help you work through them & the questions & concerns you have. All the best.

    ONEderland!

Yay! Congrats!!!! Isn’t it a wonderful feeling?! I just recently made it to onederland as well. I stalled at 197 and then I ended up dropping a TON very quickly. I’m 185 right now and I think I hit another stall .😭 I’ve been this weight for the past few weeks. I’m trying to stay off the scale and only weigh myself once a week. 195 was my goal (and I honestly didn’t think I would make that number!) so anything extra is a bonus 😌. But I can’t help but to think “yeah I could loose more” …😅

    Low BMI pre op question

Wait a second, I thought this was the support forum for weight loss surgery. Obviously there’s more to my story just as all of you have your own struggles. “Just eat right” we have all heard before. I’ve tried drugs, hypnosis, every diet out there. Overweight people know more about diets than anyone ever will. That doesn’t mean I’m not a good candidate for surgery. I’m trying to avoid negative eating behavior until I get my surgery which I feel like is the best answer for me. So suggestions for that would be helpful and how to best prepare for surgery . Thank you, Goddesslola and Shopgirl. You are actually answered my question.

    Low BMI pre op question

I had a 35 BMI and was worried about dropping too much weight on the pre op diet and worried I needed a buffer pound or two. Turned out for my team it didn’t matter how much you lost on pre op diet, they go by your weight before that diet when deciding if you qualify for the surgery. Just know that if you go back to old ways post surgery that you will gain it back just as you would with a regular diet. The restriction and the temporary loss of appetite (most have this) makes it a little easier to lose the weight but you have to change your habits to keep it off. I like to think of it as getting a clean slate. But it’s real easy to dirty that slate up again if you don’t take full advantage and make the necessary changes.

    Low BMI pre op question

Well, you are going to lose weight after surgery by giving up sugar, flour and weighing your food. You will also drink very little beer and do lots of exercise. A surgery is not going to change the mental aspect of poor eating. Trying to stay heavy enough for surgery is not a good way to start off the journey.
