5 days post op, difficulty meeting protein goals
trekker954 replied to leliwhoaoh's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I too had the sleeve and my gallbladder removed at the same time. I'm sorry you are having a difficult time, but seriously, now isn't the time to be money pinching, when RTD shakes are going to keep you alive and healthy. Sip, sip, sip. And make sure you intake Water, tea, mix our water with crystal light or other flavors to make it easy to go down... But you cannot just say you can't do it, or can't afford it. You MUST!!! You won't be on shakes for long. Once you can tolerate food, and you have been cleared, you can get your Protein in. Many of us, continue to use shakes as it is an easy way to meet the daily goal. Premiere shakes are good, most of us tolerate those. Buy some GENEPRO. Its expensive, but you can mix it with just about anything and it has no taste. I way overbought in preparation and now find, that I have found my favorite flavor, its hard to use the other products I bought. oh well. I will continue to do, especially in this crucial beginning period, to drink and eat, what agrees with me best. -
I'm about 10 days out. Your appetite will return after a few days, but either way just keep sipping your Water. Dehydration is a scary thing as you probably know. As far as Protein... What helped me is GENEPRO, it's a concentrated and purified medical grade Protein powder. One tablespoon in your water or tea will give you 30g of protein. Since it's a liquid diet, I was told to have a meal every couple of hours. I begin when I first wake up with a half of a Protein shake. After a couple of hours, I will have some Miso Soup. I like the organic Red miso soup from Amazon with a tablespoon of GENEPRO Protein powder. I like Genepro protein powder because it mixes in hot and cold easily. I'm not too concerned about salt since we are low carb during this time period and low carb diets require more sodium. I go back and forth between the soup and the Protein Shake, changing the type of soup if I get tired of Miso. For example, strained fat free cream Soups like Cream of chicken, mushroom...etc. Yesterday I had a little bit of stage 2 baby food (Beechnut: Just apples & kiwi), it was really good and went down smoothly. Oh, and watered down Cream of wheat is really good at this stage too. Hope this helps.

A really good one is GENEPRO. It mixes in both hot and cold. One tablespoon = 30g of protein. It's a medical grade protein separated by electrophoresis (and perhaps some column chromatography). Sorry if I"m being a nerd, I'm a chemist lol. Anyway, the stuff is awesome.

my NUT told me about those and you just reminded me to place an order Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App @@lapitcha your prayers have been answered GNC/Toal Lean Shake 11 oz liquid 25 gr protein 170 calories bottle - liquid all set to drink little expensive worth the convenience and yummy taste yum yum yum swiss chocolate is the one i buy wonderful taste 4 in separate bottles i am drinking to your health continued speedy recovery good luck kathy I'm going to take your word for it and try them out. The Total Lean shake was of the ones I didn't like but maybe the pre made ones will be okay Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App I second or third this! The total lean comes in a regular (sweetened with sucralose I think) and a "natural" (sweetened w stevia) I find the latter much much tastier but am not sure if it comes pre-mixed. I just shake each one up individually in a Blender Bottle. There's also a vegan version but I haven't looked at the numbers on that one. Also ditto-ing the use of GENEPRO powder! Make anything into a high protein thing and in my experience it's not detectable. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -

Can we talk carbs?
ShelterDog64 replied to magoosmom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I ate steel-cut oats with Fairlife milk, stevia and Genepro powder early on, probably until about 6 weeks post-op, then I cut out grains/cereals entirely. I know what those kind of carbs do to me and I don't think they're a great idea while I'm in weight-loss mode. Lots of great advice from some very successful vets here, thanks for bringing up the topic. I struggle with whether or not to have many carbs in any form, always eat my protein first but my body really wants vegetables and fruit right now. My garden is producing squash like crazy (my husband's co-workers are starting to hide from me, I'm the Crazy Squash Lady!) and I'm eating it frequently and I wonder if it's part of the reason I'm in this irritating .5 down/.5 up/.5 down loop right now. My dietitian is zero help with this, she mumbles vague things about 'everyone is different, there are different schools of thought about carbs, if you eat carbs eat fiber too'...I need to find someone to really talk to me about calorie intake, resting metabolic rate, protein:carb ratios, offsetting exercise, ketosis, etc. specifically for WLS patients. It's frustrating! -

Congrats on your surgery and I'm sorry you're having a hard time with the Protein. Here are some things that work for me: I have found that GENEPRO "medical grade powder" unflavored Protein Powder is a lifesaver. I know you tried unflavored already but they are not all the same. I swear I don't work for the company -- I just found this product so helpful and versatile. It mixes into any food or drink and is, to me, completely undetectable both in terms of flavor and texture. A spoonful has 30 grams of protein and 56 calories. Sorry - I'm pretty good at remembering protein and calories but I always have to look up sugar/carbs. I have added Genepro to chicken broth, cold drinks, and (I'm a few weeks out from surgery now) anything from cottage cheese to sugar free chocolate pudding. The jar directs you to online instructions on how to get the best results (mixing with a fork instead of spoon, etc). I am sensitive to grit and to added flavors and I have found this stuff to be a miracle. I ordered it from Amazon. I like the Isopure mentioned above (it's kind of like a juice with a light almost kombucha flavor, totally clear, no grit or protein vibe). A friend of mine has a third of a bottle over ice every morning just to get an easy protein boost at the very start of the day. And I totally agree with previous posters about the Syntrax nectar. I bet if you diluted their roadside lemonade with some crystal light or a stevia-based enhanced Water or, heck, just water and a squeeze of lemon juice if that's allowed, you wouldn't be able to tell you are drinking a Protein Drink. Each Syntrax Nectar packet has 23 grams protein and 100 calories. One last thing -- people have mentioned milk and fortified milk, which I totally agree with. I don't like the flavor of plain milk so I bought (again, Amazon) a bunch of sugar free syrups meant for flavoring coffee and cocktails. I started with a variety pack of Torani brand syrups at first and now I'm starting to try cheaper brands. I found that putting some milk together with powdered milk and ice in the blender and adding these syrups made a tasty creamy/whipped drink almost like a milkshake or frappuccino with zero protein taste. I most commonly add hazelnut, chocolate, or vanilla syrup (or a combo of chocolate and hazelnut and I pretend it is Nutella!). I agree with previous posters -- you will need to find a solution, and the good news is there IS a solution for you. You can even do it without premade protein shakes. Try variety packs, single servings of various shakes or puddings and also try pre-mixed individual bottles even if you've already tried the powdered version of the same brand. Texture is a big part of the equation for many people, and the premixed have very distinct textures from the powders. GOOD LUCK and congratulations. You are not alone in any part of this struggle, especially finding ways to get your protein that you can tolerate. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App -
I am also finding my balance on carbs as well. Almost 7 months post op here. At 2-3 months I never ever had room for more than a touch of fruit or a little qinoa. But I've found that eating a bit more carbs seems to boost my weight loss. My carbs come from: a slice of 100% whole wheat bread, wasa crisps, pea crisps, Greek yogurt, sweet potato, fruits and vegetables. So it's never higher carb and lower Protein at a given meal. It's more that I have room to add in more of these healthy carbs without reducing my protein. Oatmeal is a tricky one. I'd also say only whole oats or steel cut. No instant oats. And if you can add protein to it-cook in milk or add GENEPRO, better. But oatmeal is very filling and will impact your ability to get in any additional protein at that meal. (I think it's more appropriate in the first 6 weeks as you are adjusting to food then it is during the bulk of the weight loss stage.) All of that said, track. If you are tracking, and your weight loss doesn't slow down with oatmeal twice a week, great. But don't go to daily oatmeal right away. And if it makes you start craving other carbs, think about it it's really a good choice.

Can we talk carbs?
Clementine Sky replied to magoosmom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My dietician recommended steel cut oatmeal for breakfast, with a splash of milk, cinnamon, Peanut Butter, or a little fruit to jazz it up rather than adding in sugar or syrup. This article discusses some of the benefits: http://healthyeating.sfgate.com/benefits-steel-cut-oats-2053.html Trader Joe's sells frozen steel cut oatmeal that is surprisingly good, and nice for a quick, 1-dish breakfast. Sometimes I'll use a crockpot to make my own batch for the week. I prefer them cold (odd, I know) with some Fair Life milk. You can stir in an unflavored Protein powder like GENEPRO, or even a flavored one that enhances the oatmeal. Definitely avoid the packaged flavored oatmeal, like those by Quaker Oats. As for how many carbs to have in a day, I think it's really individual. I was advised to aim for around 50 grams to 100 per day. I've been successful with rapidly losing weight on low carb diets, but I've never had success at sustaining that weight loss. It's too restrictive for me, and I think it is for many people. The type of carb also matters a lot, of course. I try to get most of mine from fruit, vegetables, oatmeal, and things like crisp bread. Carbs are a good way to get in some fiber. -

Nectar vs Isopure unflavored
ShelterDog64 replied to sey1008's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
For what it's worth...I was a HUGE Isopure fan pre-op. Post-op, I literally could not get it past my lips. I liked Syntrax for a very brief couple of weeks post-op, and I can't stand it now. I'm a GENEPRO fan now, no smell, no taste, doesn't change the consistency of food. Whatever you do, don't over-invest in anything pre-op, because almost everyone's taste changes after surgery. You can get samples of lots of different Protein powders on several websites, and that's a good way to go. -

http://www.betteroats.com/product/oat-fit-maple-brown-sugar/ Very tasty with unflavored Protein powder (I use Genepro). -
Man thank you so much. I have been doing 2 premiere proteins a day, but they're wayyyyy to sweet. Chicken broth is wayyyy to salty. Lol. I am making do with water and jello sugar free pudding. Went to Starbucks and got a peach green tea lemonade unsweetened. Best thing ever. I'm doing good with getting at least 64 ounces of fluid, but the sweet protein - yuck. Have you tried unflavored protein? I use Genepro almost every day, it's 30 grams per tablespoon and has no flavor. I add a scoop in decaf coffee, I also use it in SF pudding..I purchase mine on Amazon. One way to cut the sweetness on the premiere is by adding it to cold decaf coffee, with a few pumps of SF torani syrup. With the chicken broth, are you getting low sodium? Our taste buds change so drastically after surgery but I promise it gets easier everyday I ordered and got the Genpro. Tried it today - glad you suggested it. I put it in my Crystal lite raspberry lemonade. It's the best. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App so glad that you got it and more than anything like it. That little container will become one of your best friends. One of my fave ways to use for sweet cravings is with sugar free banana cream pudding. I use the Genepro, pudding and fat free fair life milk (which has 13 g of protein per cup) and have a great protein filled snack or meal
