How long before a BM? 9 days post op
theladyslipper replied to RellaBelle's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Colace was a life saver for me in the beginning. (Not peri-colace) You can find it at any drug store. Life changer. I will say that those first few weeks before I tried colace, I used miralax & benefiber--I literally still thank God for each BM I have. TMI, but when you are struggling in that department, there is a gratitude that I don't know when I'll stop having. I'm 12 weeks. Colace! -
Having Lap-Band to Gastric Sleeve revision
ctarantino replied to littlebare's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I'm now 6 days post op and every day I wake I feel better and soooooo happy I did this! Definitely needed my tool back. Minimal pain, I'm off all pain meds. I take Carafate acid reducer and reflux meds and nausea meds on occasion. I haven't gone # 2 and have taken colace so today gonna bring out the big guns (dulcolax) and hopefully poop. ((Sorry tmi))) ???????? backed up my belly is still beyond swollen, but can feel I'm losing weight. I'm sipping water and protein shake by day. At night I sit with the family and have my broth and a 1/4c tea before bed. So complaints here and so happy this is behind me!!! Happy Sleeve day to others and my revision sisters!!! ???????????????????? -
Hi! I'm new here, glad I found this place. I had my gastric sleeve 4/4/16 and my surgeon said it was a textbook surgery. I was up right away walking but just couldn't get the gas out. Every sip of Water or broth I had brought some serious gas pains and I even had a sharp stabbing pain in the stomach area. My surgeon felt it was best for me to stay another day. I continued walking, I'd make 3-4 laps around the ward, the nurses said I was doing an awesome job. However, I still couldn't/hadn't passed any gas. On day 2 the nurses really started to push the fluids more. I had my first popsicle and learned that the sips of water I was taking must have been to big for my stomach because I wasn't having the pains as much. I was discharged about 4pm, 4/6/12. I was still struggling with pain when I drank but about 1am in the morning the gas was finally coming out (sorry if that is TMI .... but I'm sure we all went through it) ... I have never been so happy in my life! Drinking was so much easier after that, I have my sipping down to a science now. Yesterday, 4/7/16, I woke up and I felt good. Decided to take my walk down to the corner and back not once but twice. I'm not really sure how far it is and had planned to map it out with MapMyWalk on my next walk. But that didn't happen. My right side was hurting pretty bad, my body was telling me to slow it down. So I had a very boring evening, with small walks around the backyard. This morning I'm back to feeling great. Little to no pain and almost finished with my first 20oz of water. But I am not going to push it today. I look forward to sharing my journey with all of you and of course getting to know all of you.

Of course, on a TMI note I should also add that I just finished my cycle a couple days ago. In hindsight, that might have added to my Water retention. -
How long before a BM? 9 days post op

Hi! Sleeves 3/30 I had my first one within 3 days of being home and my second today (since we're doing tmi lol;) ) and mine are actually normal. No diarrhea so I think it may be normal to be more on the constipated side especially if you've been faithful in taking your pain meds. I know I was . Low pain tolerance here . Maybe just give it time .. Unless you're hurting ? Then I would call your dr. Best of luck -
How long before a BM? 9 days post op
RellaBelle posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is obviously a TMI post so I apologize in advance. I have not experienced the first week diarrhea that many people say they get. All I'm doing is passing gas. I even took a stool softener and nothing happened. I just started full liquids today [suppose to start tomorrow but I was really low on energy so started a day early] and had a protein shake... they sit well but I think they make me bloated so I may not be able to drink those. Anyway, yeah... 9 days post op and nothing in BM department. Only passing gas. How long was it for everyone before they had movement? -
What can I take to help my bowels move? I haven't had a bowel movement in almost a week? I already know about benefiber and miralax, but those don't seem to work and I'm hoping that someone may have an at home remedy that works for them?

Constipation Question?
kimvox66 replied to peglynmc's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I take 4 stool softeners a day plus 2 gummy fibers at night. I think water is also the key with all of this. I'm 6 months out and this is still a HUGE issue, especially if I don't get enough water. One thing that has really helped though is a Squatty Potty. Seriously. I was having to resort to using (and I'm sorry if this is clearly too much TMI) um...surgical gloves and Vasaline at times because I was in so much pain and nothing was moving out of the trap door so to speak. The SP has taken care of that. -
I got sleeved the same day as you and I have the same issue I now have TMI haemroids (can't spell it) the pain down there is worse than my operation pain and issues I can't go so I use an microlax enema then I go but it's awful and takes forever then last night I took two ducolax before bed and today is not a good day I'd be scared to leave the house so I go from one extreme to another than back again it's frustrating I've never ever suffered constipation. Why is everything sweet?
doppelganger replied to doppelganger's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you so very much for all the information and advice. I tried many of these suggestions. Up until yesterday I hadn't quite felt "myself" and like a flipped switch I was "me" again. I still did not meet my protein or liquid goals yesterday, but I feel better and (TMI) keeping an eye on the clarity of my urine. Things are good and I have gotten in more protein today and liquids from discovering that chewing on Sonic's ice is my new fave thing to do! -
Who else got sleeved on the 28th of march?
Kesha1020 replied to elaina831's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
29th was my day....First few days I had really bad pain on the left side (main incision) and gas. Feeling alot better today with gas strips and especially after passing gas yesterday (tmi)...pain is manageable I take the pain meds once a day. I'm having a hard time getting my Protein and liquids in. I only did 30 grams of protein and about 20oz of Water yesterday. Just doing laps around the house for exercise but I'm going to the mall today to do some walking. Good luck everyone! Sent from my SM-G920P using the BariatricPal App -
Liquid diet begins....
Renkoss replied to apmcleish's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks for answering Ashlie M. It just sometimes helps to know you are not going through the "TMI" parts of this process alone. I did google and there were many posts from people in years past who had bariatric and had the same experience on the pre-op diet. I was concerned mostly because I have to do a bowel prep Monday afternoon-evening for a colonoscopy on Tuesday. I did call the Gatrointestinal clinic and they said to do as much of the prep as needed to get output as clear as possible. So, okay. I'll just have to drink a ton of Water. I'm not a huge water person, so I'll do the best I can. We have the same surgery date, so yes, I am on Day 6 as well. The hunger is beginning to diminish, and I as well am continuing to do the broth, popsicles, Protein shakes. I just know that 20 min afterwards I'm going to be in the bathroom! -
Liquid diet begins....
apmcleish replied to apmcleish's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Not TMI and YESsss. I had four days of straight liquid BM. It was miserable. Now it's tapered off and nothing is happening but I'm on day 6. I am starting to not feel hungry at all which I never thought the day would come. But I'm forcing liquids and broths down. One more week for me.... That's what I keep telling myself. I would for sure call the Dr just to check in if you're feeling uncomfortable about what's happening or you have questions. My office has told me a billion times call with questions, and they keep calling me to see if I have any. LOL. I hope this helps!! Ashlie M Sent from my iPhone -
Finally feeling so much better and had my first bm (tmi but we share and relate). Still tender in belly and drinking more since bm. So so happy.

Liquid diet begins....
Renkoss replied to apmcleish's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
TMI question here; is anyone else having problems with bowels with this liquid diet? This is Day 4 for me and I've had two episodes of very loose BM's. I also get a bit of cramping and my stomach gets really bloated and hard afterwards for a bit. I understand everything going in is liquid and liquid shall come back out, but I have to do a bowel prep Monday for a colonoscopy on Tuesday and I'm slightly concerned that I'll become dehydrated or ill. I think I might have to call the doctors office tomorrow to find out how to handle this. I can't imagine taking Imodium would be prescribed since I believe this is what they want is for the body to be cleansed. Anyone else having problems? -
Insulin Resistance and Gastric Sleeve
Changed2016 replied to Changed2016's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Thanks everyone for sharing! I have been very blessed with no other medical issues or meds. However, I just had my lab work done and my cholesterol and triglycerides were too high that my PCP is considering putting me on Cholesterol lowering meds. I told her I'm in the process for the WLS and hoping I can hold off. I've lost 30 lbs twice while on Metformin once 7 years ago, got pregnant, stopped Metformin and gained all weight back and then I lost 30lbs on my own 2 1/2 yrs ago watching my carbs (less than 20 grams a day) and no sugar. And staying on my metformin very strictly. But, I started having other issues, like repeated bladder infections, constant diarrhea, (TMI) but results of 4 extended release Metformins a day! I found myself stopping the Metformin when I knew I was going to be on a trip or away from a bathroom during the day and slowly started adding the carbs back into my diet. Now, I'm at the exact weight I was when I gave birth, accept this time no baby excuse. Looking forward to starting a new journey with my sleeve and not looking back! OMG I feel for you. Back in 2014 I had complications (couldn't swallow) after they removed my thyroid. I couldn't drink or eat. My veins kept blowing from all the IVs. They finally decided to give me a feeding tube. The. Absolutely. WORST. Experience of my life! Once it was in, it was bearable, but the process of inserting it? I don't know about you, but they don't give you anything to make it easier. You can feel it and I don't think the tech who put in mine had much experience. I was crying because of the pain and gagging, snotting up, peeing myself from stress incontinence (TMI) not able to breathe--did I mention pain? Then, after they did it, the damn thing kept want to wriggle it's way back up. I think my body was saying, "Oh HELL no!" Then they started talking about putting some sort of tube/shunt (I can't remember the word) directly into my stomach). It was depressing as hell. I was lucky and turned the corner (possibly from fear of another procedure). I'm sorry you are having so many problems. Right now I'm waiting for a pleural effusion (Water on the lungs) to be drained and tested. It's pretty much preventing me from exercising, etc., not to mention difficulty breathing. But what I have pales in comparison to what you've gone through. May you also "round the corner" soon.

9 years post-op and my scale still freaks me out at times
Jean McMillan posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I was banded on 9/19/07. A red-letter day. Since then I've had ups and downs on the scale and in medical issues, but I've never regretted having WLS. It turned my life - and my head - around. Except that... After about a year of stable weight, I've been alarmed at gaining 5 pounds in the past month. That is such a puny number compared to my weight gains in the past that I'm embarrassed to admit it, but just 5 pounds freaks me out. It makes me want to smash my scale with a sledge hammer, if only I could find one. And perhaps that lack is a good thing. Knowing me, I'd smash my scale, my foot, and the porcelain tile in the bathroom, at a high cost all 'round. I've logged my food to test my calorie intake, and can't find an explanation there. It's possible that high sodium intake contributes to this, but I'm here to tell ya: my XS-capacity bladder gives me frequent and vivid messages quite soon after sodium indiscretion. So of course, with the weight gain/loss/gain/loss history I bear, I'm in a panic. Until today, when my XS bladder sent me to the loo for the 40th time in 4 hours (perhaps a small exaggeration) and I suddenly realized that (sorry if this is TMI) I'd pulled down my size 4 pants without unzipping them. Again. I raced into my closet to check the size tags on the pants hanging there, and they were size 4's. Yes, this has happened before. I report it now because (of course) I want your sympathy but also because the public declaration reminds me that this is, as I've said so, so many times, a lifetime journey. Jean -
Let's talk...Pre-op diet & your BM's 0.o
Megall9 replied to sassyfrass23's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Mine changed. I'm still pre op, but had to do a trial 2 week liquid diet to "work any kinks out" before meeting my surgeon to see what I liked and if I could handle it. I was in the same boat as you with issues going, and I was worried. I just made sure to drink more and more Water. At about day 12/13 everything changed and I had no issues anymore, and everything was soft. sorry for the TMI, but I hope it gets easier for you as well. -
Let's talk...Pre-op diet & your BM's 0.o
sassyfrass23 posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
*This thread could potentially become TMI. Proceed at your own discretion...* Oooook! I'm on day 11 of my preop liquid diet! Ten days ago- I didn't think I'd make it. So I am THRILLED to say I've lasted this long. Only 4 short days until I'm in the OR and joining all of you on the other side. But before we get too far ahead, I need to know..... Did your BM's change when you were on the preop liquid diet? Mine consists of all liquids with the exception of oatmeal, grits, cottage cheese and yogurt. Everything else is either brother, cream (strained) Soups, SF Jell-O, Protein drinks, Water and decaf tea or coffee. I'm taking in AT LEAST 70 + oz of liquids a day. I figured the "liquids" would be flying through me, if you know what I mean. But it's quite the opposite. I've never had regular BM's and have dealt with constipation regularly and this diet has thrown all of my pre-existing issues into a freakin' conniption. I honestly don't believe it's from dehydration but I suppose I could be wrong (which isn't a common occurrence kidding...) . -
Questions about surgery
Margie122 replied to excitedforweightloss's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hair - depending upon surgery YES you may have hair loss. More hair loss with gastric bypass, less with the sleeve. I lost some hair, but it's regrowing and I never had a bald spot. I had the sleeve. I did not have drainage tubes. I don't think most people do...but ask the surgeon. I had some dry heaves and nausea post-surgery but I think mine was an adverse reaction to the type of anesthesia they used. I was fine after a few days. As for gas pain - there is some gas left in your body after you have the surgery and walking around and moving gets it out. You can burp and/or fart (sorry if TMI!) but it will make you feel better to MOVE MOVE MOVE. The benefits of the surgery far outweigh a little hair loss, the possible inconvenience of drains, or gas. Ask questions of your surgical team! What surgery are you having? GOOD LUCK! -
Just super excited to share that my insurance is covering my breast reduction and lift surgery!! I just got the news last night!! So freaking happy! The thing I think is hilarious is that they didn't cover WLS but they don't have a problem covering reconstruction of my TaTas. The hubs even said that since I am going to be under and it would be cheaper in the long run we can throw a tummy tuck in at the same time! Now I just have to get rid of these ulcers and be smoke free for 6 weeks prior to surgery! I CAN do this!
