After an appointment today I stopped at Trader Joe's to pick up groceries. One of the miracles of my surgery is that I can now do my own shopping. I had gotten so immobile pre-op that I had to have someone else buy my groceries. Trader Joe's is so smart. They put their flowers and plants right by the front door. I bought with abandon: cut tulips, cut iris, a succulent, and a pot of hyacinths. It occurred to me that pre-op, most of my cart would have been full of pre-packaged foods and starches. Today, it was full of flowers, fresh berries, yogurt, and other healthy, fresh whole foods. One of my favorite poems: How do you feed your soul at the grocery store?

The transition to vegetarianism…
goblue9280 replied to JupiterinVirgo's topic in Vegetarian or Vegan Eating
My surgeon (Garth Davis) advocates a switch to vegan/vegetarian diet... or as close to it as you can do. He has a book out, Proteinaholic, and there are a bunch of good vegan/vegetarian recipes in it that I find WLS friendly. I'm not off meat/dairy 100%, but I'd say 90%+ of my daily caloric intake is plant based... and when I have meat, it's usually lean poultry or fish. Here's a recipe for quinoa with black Beans that I make often. I like to eat it plain with hot sauce, or as a salad topping... I imagine it'd be good in some sort of low carb wrap. If you eat dairy, you could up the Protein with some cheese or plain greek yogurt. http://allrecipes.com/recipe/49552/quinoa-and-black-beans/ -

One year after sleeve surgery can you eat a whole bagel with cream cheese?
Gail Ann replied to Gail Ann's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I usually eat one meal a day. Then a yogurt at night. I was wondering if it's unusual to be able to fit a whole bagel with cream cheese a year after sleeve surgery. I'm hoping I haven't stretched out the new stomach too much. -
Protein Goal/Shopping List
tstclair17 replied to DuckieXD's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 3 months post-op and I can't stomach not one more Protein shake. I'm having such a hard time getting my protein in. My hair is beginning to come out and I feel like I'm malnourished. The thought of eating yogurt every day for Breakfast makes me want to hurl. I can't eat eggs. I try to get my protein in at lunch and dinner but I know I'm failing miserably. Any suggestions from anyone? -

My dr's office does things s bit different then others, were able to have purée the day we come home, but I didn't do that till week 2, yogurt, cottage cheese, I did try the egg few bites and it was fine, -
Since surgery, I have been less and less interested in eating meat. I'd like to say that vegetarianism appeals to me because I'm some kind of humanitarian, but really I just feel increasingly disgusted with the thought of dead animal flesh even though I've always been a huge meat eater. I find that occasionally my body requires actual meet but most of the time, I'm OK without it. I get much of my Protein from cheese, a little from yogurt, and the occasional egg. All of the dishes I know how to prepare feature meet as the main attraction. That's not true: Pasta is the other main attraction. I'm getting quite bored with my staple foods, I need some super simple superfast super easy one dish recipes that are high-protein, low-carb, and vegetarian. Can any of you magnificent vegetarian veterans help me out?

This pre-op diet is gonna kill me.
KELLIEDN replied to breezy25's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I guess all surgeons are different? My surgery is tomorrow and I have been on a full liquid diet since Saturday. But that includes light yogurt, plain oatmeal (with skim milk and truvia) and sugar free pudding....so at least I had some things that I felt filled me up and I could enjoy. Today is my only day of Clear liquids only. I can't imagine having to do today for 1 or 2 weeks. I totally feel for you!! -
Liquid diet begins....
Renkoss replied to apmcleish's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Every doctor is different in how they handle their patients with the liquid diet prior to surgery. It may also be the insurance who dictates some of how it should be handled. I know my surgeon requires the 2 week pre-op liquid diet to help shrink the liver and also to get the body ready for rapid weight loss. That is what the paperword says anyway. I'm from Cleveland, Ohio. My surgery is being performed at The Cleveland Clinic and my surgeon is Dr. Phillip Shauer. He is the head of the Bariatric and Metabolic Institute at The Cleveland Clinic-Cleveland. Day 4 of the liquid diet. Doing okay so far. I have added a few oyster crackers to my broth at meal time. I need just a tiny bit of sustanance to stave off the hunger pains. I thought as a diabetic I pee'd a lot throughout the day; it is nothing compared to this liquid diet!! I should have bought stock in toilet paper! I have included greek yogurt in my diet plan right now as well. I use it as a dessert at night. Helps to keep me satiated throughout the night. I also have to watch my blood sugar so it doesn't bottom out while I'm asleep. Going into a low state of blood sugar when you are sleeping is no fun; I've experienced that before and trust me it is scary. Also I found these fruit/veggie sugar free popsicles (low carb too) made by Outshine that are to die for! The popsicles satisfy the need to "chew" on something. Okay, I'm making myself hungry now! No more food talk! 10 days my fellow April 11th peeps! 10 days! -
Calling all March bypass surgery dates!
LisaMergs replied to Soexcited's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I'm now 8 days post op. Still have pain by two of my incisions but been walking over a mile each day. Today was crazy! Was up early to take my youngest to a 7 am dental appointment and walked while he was getting his teeth cleaned. Did some other errands and at 1 sat in the recliner by the fireplace and woke up at MIDNIGHT!!! Holy cow! Obviously I needed it but now 3 am and wide awake! Finding hot tea is my best friend. Tummy does NOT like cold things! Have yet to throw up, dump etc. no issues getting liquids in either but adding all the food ( that's a laugh!! 4 oz 3x a day?!?!) is more of a pain because I'm more interested in getting the Protein in. FYI- Dannon Greek yogurt has a banana cream and a toasted coconut that are unbelievably awesome!!!!! Have a great day all!!! -

I'm good I went home from hospital today I'm only on shakes till Monday then purée I've only managed 200mls Water so far today and 2 teaspoons of yogurt so confusing the hospital gave me yogurt but I'm meant to be on shakes oh well. I dont have any gas pain but I'm gassy. My abdominal wall is really sore it's hard to move about I wasn't expecting that the wound closest to my belly button is really painful. They gave me juice last night it made me nauseated and so did the Optifast for tea it was made with milk and I felt sick I'm going to use my own Protein powder now I'm home and I need to get some of the flavourless Protein Powder to add to my purée my NUT said the red 8 one is good. When I got released from hospital my fiancé was downstairs having Breakfast so I walked down there he was having my most favourite breakfast eggs Benedict I looked at it and felt nothing at all was so surprised by how I felt I'm pleased to hear from you I was getting very worried. Lap band to gastric bypass revision info
Stacylynn1982 replied to Stacylynn1982's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi!!! So glad to talk to you! My surgeon told me that my band was way way overfilled for too long. My initial surgery report had that on the day of surgery I already had over 2cc in my band. He said that should have never happened. I had close to 8 cc at one point. I lost 90 pounds, not long after my weight loss, I started worrying because I was actually still hungry. which leads him to believe there may be erosion but there could be slippage too because of the reflux and vomiting now ️. I just want to be able to eat food again. I am scheduled for a upper endoscopy, Barium swallow, and gastric emptying test. I live off slider food because anything else gets stuck and you know what happens then. I was stuck on yogurt 2 weeks ago, it's pretty much been a roller coaster of things. I really hope you don't have erosion. I am pulling for you one surgery is more than enough. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -

I love chocolate chip cookie dough Quest bars. I was disappointed in the Cookies and cream but it was ok. I recently got a blueberry one in yogurt. I'm trying it tomorrow. My husband got the strawberries and cream. Man sometimes I just need something other than chocolate and vanilla.

Liquid diet begins....
apmcleish replied to apmcleish's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am allowed to have Protein shakes/drinks, Water, broth, sugar free Jello, sugar free popsicles, decaf coffee/tea, calorie free decaf any type of drink. I am a diabetic T2 and have to use everything that is sugar free, so it is hard for me to hit 800 calories a day on this diet (that is the amount of calories permitted). I can have the same things. But also Greek yogurt plain with no fruit or chunks. It's pretty difficult... But I'm ending my third day and I think tomorrow will be a bit easier. I HOPE anyway. LoL. I do agree that getting 800 cals in is difficult. Ugh. It's not fun but it's a means to an end right? Ashlie M Sent from my iPhone -

I need to do this, no matter what
Micoxv replied to Micoxv's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Another day at work, more intense and no issues. Today some colleagues had lunch delivered to the office . Usually I would have been craving of hunger at lunch with nice smell of well cooked Spanish dishes....but now I noticed that if my head remembered very well, my stomach remained completely indifferent . This is magical. I scheduled a shake at 1 pm that I took at 5 pm. I can drink plenty of water now (as long as there is flavor). And I lost my daily pound. I can't ask for more. I am 9 days post op and I am thinking about remaining on liquids an extra week. Did anybody do that? I am worried about purées since my episode of liquid yogurt and protein powder was not a success. -
I've had this before It's good - the only thing I don't like about it is that it doesn't have any Probiotics. That's primarily why I eat yogurt since it helps with digestion and keeping things balanced in the lady garden. But, since it doesn't have live cultures, it doesn't have that tang some people dislike about yogurt so that could be a plus for folks averse to the flavor!

13 Things To Know About Living With the Lap-Band
BayougirlMrsS replied to George Fielding MD's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Magazine
Dr. Fielding... i couldn't agree more with your 13 points... they are spot on. Thanks for writing this. Banded 11/09..... What is this hunger you speak of... i never feel hungry. I wake up, wait about 30 min and have a cup of coffee, then another when i get to work at 7am. I fix myself a 1/2 cup of plan yogurt with some granola in it and eat on that till about 9-10ish... depends on how busy i am it sits on my desk and i eat a bite.. work.. bite...work. lunch comes around and i normally eat tuna or chicken salad with half of avocado... that normally takes me till 1ish... again depends on work. I normally have a snack of nuts or cheese. I cook supper... last night was Crawfish stew, rice and potato salad... (its a Louisiana thing)... i had a glass of wine while i cooked... ate my cup of stew with out the rice and two tablespoons of potato salad... The end. I eat slowly.. very slowly and i find im never hungry.... I saw my dr. every month for the firs 1.5 years.... some were for adjustments some were for just advice. I have been able to maintain an 80-87lb weightloss and could not be happier with my band.... I pray every night that the band gods keep me in there good graces.... Thanks again..... -
Congrats on the loss. That'a great!!! I know my hunger is head hunger. If we are out and busy I rarely eat until we get home at night. I do drink my shake and eat at least a yogurt. But, like I said today is one of those days. I am really happy for your loss.

if the greek yogurt is too thick for you just try regular yoplait yogurt. I eat that all the time because I don't like the thickness of the greek yogurt and have no problems
