    Height and weight before surgery??

Hi There. I am 5'8 and I was banded at 282. My goal weight is 185. They say that I should be 160-165 to be average but my doctor said 185 is good. 145 seems a little low. Isn't it hard to maintain?

    Almost solid food time

I was worried too, but more worried about getting stuck or not tolerating certain foods. I find my weight loss has definitely slowed down a bit, but slow and steady wins the race, right?

  5. Well, after viewing EMMI and talking this over with my direct family members, we had the visit with the Physc. doctor. I was scared too death of taking a 485 question test, but really it was not a big deal, and they did not ask some of the questions I thought they would. The doc was "OK" and cleared me and gave me his blessing....YIPPY Now offf too see the Surgeon. My husband went with me and was and has been very skeptical...but really liked this man. He was very to the point and if you dont work with him, than he cant help you. I realize that this surgery is not a quick fix, and that will help me allot...(I HOPE) He felt like I was a very good candiadate, and I than had about an hour before I met with the dietician. Now he was awesome...... Realistic, but serious.....strick liquid diet 10 days pre op....but he has me starting on a modifired diet as well now, starting NOW.... Hopefully in a short time we will get insurance approval....and get scheduled... I am so ready to start getting this off and living better. I am a little concearned about having to try new things....ok, allot concearned...but I figure if you can only eat a "small" amount, I can at least try it and force myself into a new way of thinking... :help: So....now the time is waiting... My weight on Tuesday of this week at family doc was 323 weight at Surgeon which is what we will count is 318.5

    Running/exercise again?

i do kickboxing and my surgeon made me wait 2 months before i could go back. he encouraged walking and light weight lifting because kickboxing is too intense of cardio. good luck
  8. Pros: I eat less, lost lots of weight, can do stuff I hadn't been able to do in years, have bloodwork that is in the perfect range, have less stress on my joints, spend less time at various medical appointments, etc. etc. Cons: I eat less and spent money getting a new wardrobe. No other cons for me.
  9. I went to see my surgeon yesterday, also had my psych. evaluation and nutrition consult. Things are moving along. I received all my RX's for preop testing and one is an Esopegeal Motility test. It sounds like it hurts, a tube down the nose into the esophegus (sp?). They said I will be awake for it. Has anyone had this done?? Does it hurt? Just wondering what I'm in for. I'm doing it anyway, so I guess it doesn't really matter, I'm just curious. Surgeon said I should be good to go for the end of September, I was hoping for much sooner, but I guess we shall see. Boy, did I put on a lot of weight these past couple of weeks, I was shocked when I saw the scale. I haven't weight this much since I was 9 months pregnant. Not much less than this, but I've put on 20lbs I didn't need. I have Medicare and my BMI is about 46 so I don't need prior approval, which is good.

What does her doctor say? I am not a doctor but yes this can be all part of weight loss surgery. My doctor says I have to take 36 to 45 mg of iron everyday for the rest of my life. If I was a woman menstruating or at risk of anemia take up to 100 mg of total elemental iron per day. This is a quote out of my weight loss surgery guide. Other doctors could recommend different quantities but I'm sure all doctors tell all their patients they have to take iron suppliments. This is one of the many vitamine bariatric patients must take.

    Losing Upper Stomach Fat

I'm really realising that to lose a lot of those pockets, it can be necessary to get right down to the bottom of your healthy weight range. Strangely, even though I'm definitely pear shaped, not an apple, and never had a huge stomach, I have a pocket of fat left on my upper abdomen too. I figure my healthy weight range is 63 to 79kg and I'm 70kg, there's still a fair bit of weight that I *could* lose. Its easier said than done when you're no longer overweight though, its very hard to budge it. I'm going to get a breast lift and I seriously think a spot of selective lipo will be included there. Its just a weird little pocket that sits front centre, upper abdomen. Not enough to see clothed luckily. Its hard, but a lot of those little things will only resolve right down close to your goal weight. You just have to keep going.

    Losing Upper Stomach Fat

Question...how do you lose upper body fat? I've lost 50lbs, but the bulk of the weight came off the bottom and only about 2in around my bust and none of in my breasts and I think they are there to stay. LOL! .I lost 3 sizes in my waist, but only 1 size on top. I can't seem to lose the upper half of my stomach. It's frustrating...it makes look like I'm pregnant and when you're large the last thing you want is to be asked is when are you due? Should I be eating different foods ...what sort of exercising should I be doing? I've done the ab crunches, but it's not something I like to do because they don't seem effective. I imagine if I do them every day, it may work, but I'm hoping to find something to help melt the body fat so that I can "see" the crunches start to work. Does that sound stupid? Up for any ideas to help lose the fat. It worries me because it's the fat closest to the heart and to be heart healthy this fat needs to be gone.

Advice Please... In pain Did it slip?

Liz, glad you are feeling better. If in the future you are finding you may need the services of the ER for your band, I have some information that may make things go more smoothly for you. If you have access to one, go to a medical center with a Surgical Weight Loss center (preferably a Center of Excellence) that way if you do go to the ER with a surgical emergency, they can take care of it there and don't have to transfer you-which costs alot of $$. If you do research now, then you will know which hospital to go to in the event you need one. Also, if you need to find a surgeon in the states (for non emergency care), a Center of Excellence has to accept you. Now, they may require some type of payment up front, but they cannot turn you away outright. THis is part of their COE accreditation. Secondly, any emergency department (county or otherwise) cannot turn you away regardless of ability to pay. A federal law entitles you to receive a medical screening exam and any stabilizing treatment necessary regardless of ability to pay. Now you may have a long wait in the ER (hours- alot of hours), but you will get seen eventually. I just wanted to be of some help in case you find yourself in this situation again. Hope this wasn't too much info. Best wishes!!!
  16. <HR style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #d9d9d9; COLOR: #d9d9d9" SIZE=1> Hello all! I've been banded over a year now and well it's just this thing in my body that makes it difficult for me to eat but hasn't really helped me in any life altering way to lose weight. Anyhoo, on Friday I noticed pain when trying to eat and since then have not even been able to get mushies down. I struggled with a bowl of yogurt and granola (broken up tiny granola) this morning. I had a hard time eating ice cream last night even. Oh and I know what your thinking (ice cream, no wonder she's not losing)!! But let me assure you the ice cream is out of sheer desperation as I was so hungry and didn't have anything else on hand that should go down easily. Tonight it has taken me nearly five hours to get down a completely melted (water consistancy) smoothy and it HURT going down. Every drop! Okay, I was going off track for a minute. So, here's the thing, I've moved out of state and my doc is in TJ. I am BROKE and have no insurance and no doctor to go see. So, I am trying to figure out what is going on with me so I can plan my next move. Any advice is appreciated!!!

    10 weeks out.

Yeah this is going to be my third shoulder surgery, but first on my left shoulder. Recovery is rough and I've gained a great deal of weight after each previous one. I am happy that I got sleeved before this one.

    Stressed Out and Overwhelmed

I used to get I wasn't that big. I wear my weight well. Let me tell you, I have lost over 55 lbs and have 25 to go... It is a whole new me. No more sleep apnea, incontinence, hurting knees and ankles, migraines are minimized, mood swings are down... best decision I ever made!!! There was a discussion on this board about telling others. Some keep it very private and some don't. I am pretty much an open book - besides, people are going to know you did something when you start looking awesome. Plus, if I can help anyone else who has struggled with weight the way we have, it is worth it. To me, I would rather spent $350 on something else than labs! My boss was awesome bout the appointments before and after. He really wanted me to be healthy. I was so lucky in that respect. He checks on me all the time to see how i am doing. He even commented in our last meeting about how high energy I am (I was before but now it is ridiculous). I just prioritized my appointments and got as many of them as early in the day or late in the day. My therapist really worked with me as well. Tell you stomach to be quiet and let the brain work. You got this!

    I Need Some Advice...

As much as I love my band, I have to say that it's a fickle mistress. It can take several fills to achieve optimal restriction, and then as you lose weight and the fat surrounding your inner organs (including your stomach) shrinks, your band will feel looser so you'll need more fill. Also, restriction can be affected by the time of day, the climate, medications, allergies, hormones, and the position of Mars in the sky. You'll feel more restriction when you're making healthy food choices of SOLID foods, less restriction when you're choosing to eat soft and slider foods (some of which are healthy, like yogurt, but a lot of them are high-calorie and nutrient-poor, like ice cream and potato chips). We're all sick of dieting by the time we have WLS, but in a sense success with the band does involve dieting. Your band can't make good food choices for you, it can't make you exercise, it can't make you say no to trigger foods. That's all up to you. I'm over 4 years post op, 2 lbs. below my goal weight, with excellent restriction, and I still have to work on all of that in order to maintain my weight loss. It's a lifetime project. Finally I have to say: just because you can eat anything or overeat doesn't mean you should. Overeating can indeed stretch your pouch and/or esophagus and it can indeed cause your band to slip. Nowadays self-control seems to be a no-no word, but portion control is up to you, at least until you learn your soft stops. Your band won't ring a bell or flash some lights when it's time for you to stop eating. You have to eat slowly and pay close attention to how you feel as you eat. Soft stops are usually subtle - a hiccup, a sneeze, a sigh, a burp, an urge to clear your throat. If you eat through that kind of signal, looking for your pre-op sense of satiety (what I call "Thanksgiving dinner Full"), you'll go on struggling indefinitely. Success with the band is a lot of work. Although it's possible that you've stretched your pouch, only an upper GI study can prove that. If you go on overeating, it'll just make the situation worse. So I suggest that you make yourself do the evil D word (diet) for a week, pay very close attention to your satiety signals, keep a food log including the times of your meals or Snacks so you can get a handle on how long your satiety lasts, and only then go back to your bariatric surgeon to discuss another fill. Jean
  23. I am two weeks post opt. I have lost 20.5 pounds including pre-opt diet (10). That has dropped me one size in pants. This is great b/c most of my clothes are at this size, especially summer stuff. I had very little stuff that fit at 20 lbs heavier so I was wearing workout clothes almost all the time when I was not at work. I pulled a pile of clothes off the top shelf in the closet to see if any fit again and every single piece fit! So I immediately got a bag and threw away the very few things I had in the larger size. I have always saved clothes thinking I may gain again but this time I wont do it. I am going down and not up again! Also, someone at work told me "what ever you are doing, keep it up, you are looking good". It is nice to get this recognition only 20 lbs down. I am very excited. I cannot wait for me! I needed this boost to keep me on track now that Iam in bandster hell waiting for first fill. That is all, best wishes to all my banded buddies. Oh, my friend that had surgery the same day as me, she has already been taken off her High Blood Pressure medicine completely! It is amazing what losing weight can do for our bodies.
