  1. Hi - I am new here, but I am wondering if anyone can speak to their success having the SADI-S procedure after an unsuccessful VGS. I had a VGS done in 2015 and lost some weight but quickly gained it back after healing b/c I felt little to no restriction. My surgeon has suggested revising that to add the malabsorptive portion of the SADI-S. I am just curious if anyone here has had experience with this type of revision and what success you had following the DS portion. Thank you in advance!
  2. I returned to the gym on November 22nd and have only missed a couple of days since then/going 7 days a week. I'm doing 60-90 minutes of cardio at the gym, plus every other day I'm doing strength training on the weight lifting machines and lifting small light dumbbells at home. I should have taken measurements when I started working out two months ago but I didn't. Now the scale isn't moving down, but it could be my new fitness routine and muscle gain. How long should it take before I can start seeing some muscle definition in my arms and/or tell that the weightlifting is working? Is it too late for me to measure now and into the future to track changes? I'd like to see some arm definition by May if possible.

    I am very happy with the sleeve. There is nothing I learned afterward that I wished I'd known before. PROS: less invasive/drastic of a surgery, not as many absorption problems CONS: you lose more weight with bypass

    people will have pros and cons for both, talk to your surgeon and see what they say. I had reflux before surgery and many said a sleeve would make it worse, my surgeon said he believed it would resolve after surgery due to the weight loss I am 6 months out and haven't had any more issues than I had previously in fact less. I am to scared to go off my meds for it just yet but I hope in time I can do that. the reason I am telling you this is because reflux seems to be a reason people don't go for the sleeve

    Eating with bypass vs lapband

    I am about 6 weeks out of my revision from lap band to bypass and from my experience it is way different. It is a whole new way of learning to eat and seeing what you can tolerate and what you cannot. I do not get the 'full' feeling like I did with the band and I am bummed about that. I am learning that I am getting a new 'full' feeling that I am getting used to that has started to help me now that I have experienced it. I don't know if I have had dumping or not. I have had frequent diarrhea getting used to foods but not sure its technically dumping. I haven't had it in connection with consuming sugar or the sweaty, racing heart thing. I have started to lose weight and I am happy about that part but definitely a different process than the band. Good Luck to you!
  6. "Exact Number" - That is the perfect way of putting it. I realize intellectually that the number really doesn't matter... but it does to ME! It's about having a goal and meeting that goal. Until I do, it feels like unfinished business for lack of a better term. @catwoman7 I can completely relate to eye-rolling in the past when people have bemoaned a 10lb weight loss issue - I just wanted to say "hold my beer and watch this!" Or my favorite... "I've gained 5lbs and I just have to get it off." - My thoughts "You vain *#&$, try losing 100lbs..." Again, now I can totally relate to panic mode if there's that much of a change - Ah... skinny people problems... I consider myself beyond lucky to have them now!
  7. Yeah, it's tough. I lost 5 pounds in 2 weeks on WW and was happy and moving forward but the last two weeks I've lost nothing/gained if you believe the scale. I followed the diet to the letter. The lady at the gym keeps saying "You get smaller every time I see you" but I'm NOT! I'm getting bigger!
  8. losing 10 lbs, when you're at or very near a normal BMI, is REALLY tough. I've said this before, but I remember back when I attended Weight Watchers meetings when I weighed 300+ lbs, listening to these slightly overweight people screaming and moaning about hard it was to lose 10 lbs. I just wanted to roll my eyes at them. Now I totally get it..

    Talk to your psychiatrist for sure. If they are extended/delayed release, you will very likely want to consider a med adjustment. Because of the way bypass works, it can impact the absorption of certain meds, especially delayed/extended release. If they are not, then the malabsorption should not be a factor, but as you lose weight and hormones fluctuate, you may still need adjustments. That being said, WLS can be successful for those of us with mental heal diagnoses and you absolutely can be healthy and well!
  10. Mando, I can’t even explain how much this post means to me! Thank you for posting it! I thought I was the only one in this very rocky annoying boat. 7 months out for me - I’ve lost 73lbs. Dropped 6 dress sizes, and yes I will even agree that I look great! However…… I am 7lbs from my end goal… since before Xmas I have been bouncing up and down the scales 2-3lbs and can’t seem to shift anything. i have days I loose a lb - get excited and then jump back on a few days later and it’s back there again 🤨 I have had very supportive family and friends however they don’t understand why I’m so frustrated. Because they just see that I’m ‘skinny’ now and should just be happy. i am happy.. but I want to reach my goal. I have adjusted my meals. Increased my protein intake. Increased my water intake… I’ve started exercising (mainly walking and sit ups) I can see a difference in terms of my body is changing still, I’ve lost 1/2 inch in my waist, but nothing has moved on the scale. So although I look more defined I still want that scale to change! I think this is just the final mile and it’s a struggle when you see the scale move every week for the past 6-7 months for it to stop is a bit of an anticlimax. But it’s gotta stop at some point right? Maybe this is the weight my body is comfortable with and I need to get used to us… the only comfort is that I haven’t ‘gained’ weight … Keep going you will get there…
  11. I know most folks here can relate - I'm well over a year out and these last 10lbs to my "real" goal are just killing me. I jump back on the bandwagon for a week or so and lose 2-3 lbs and then gain them back for no apparent reason (other than hormones and such) which of course puts me in a mood to just give up and go back to normal maintenance... then again, lose/gain the same 2-3 lbs over the next few weeks. Particularly when everyone is commenting on how great you look and "WOW, you are killing it, you look smaller every time I see you." No dammit - I want to lose at least another 10-20 lbs... I know what I need to do, just can't seem to get in the right headspace for more than a week or two.

    You are too funny! My surgery was 12/22/21 and I'm 60. The hospital said they get a lot of older people. I did very well. No pain, left the hospital early, the next day. Everything is going great. The only thing I would say about being older is that I've lost a lot less weight than the younger people. I've only lost 20 lbs since pre op diet which was started Dec. 9th. Good luck to you.
  13. I've heard that gout is very painful. I would think that WLS will help with that to prevent future flare-ups because you'll be eating less fatty and triggering foods and your weight will be lower.

    Bipolar and gastric bypass

    My cousin has dipolar disorder and had bypass surgery. She was fine with absorbing the meds, but she was noncompliant with her meds and ended up gaining the weight back because she was imbalanced. But as to your concern, I take anxiety and antidepressants and they absorb and work effectively just fine. Just stay on your meds and you'll be successful.

    Gout Flare-up, time-frame, and remedies

    Watch your diet. Certain foods will encourage flare ups. There is a prescription medication to manage gout. Can’t recall it’s name. When you first take it the side effects aren’t pleasant as it flushes the excess uric acid out of your body but once that occurs & you keep taking the meds you don’t experience that again. It could be occurring because the uric acid stored in your fat is being released into your body as you’re losing weight.

    End goal weight

    I picked a weight that had always been my lowest weight the many, many times I’d lost weight in the past. It put me at a BMI of 23. My surgeon thought it was an achievable goal & it was. I reached it by 6 months & then continued to lose as I tried to sort out my maintenance. Whatever weight you reach has to be one you can maintain without having to establish unsustainable limitations to your diet & how you want to live your life: happy & healthy. All the best.

    End goal weight

    I picked a weight I got to over 10 years ago when I felt and looked really good. I'll be working towards that but not be too disappointed if my new set weight is above that. Hard to say this far out and honestly I licked my finger and held it up in the wind if I'm honest. I'll take anything lower than the BMI of over 40 where I started out - that's a win in my book!   18. Juniper, I’m in the exact same place. I had severe reflux and had all the fluid taken out of my band. I quickly gained 20 lb over the 40 I had gained back over the last 2 years or so. I am approved for revision to bypass and am hoping to have it near the end of Feb. I had the exact same question . I would get stuck with the band and could either tough it out or eject the stuck item. I often chose eject and am wondering if you can do the same after bypass.

    End goal weight

    I picked two goals. One that was a weight I remembered feeling confident enough to go out and do things such as bowling league which was 180 and then 160 which is a few pounds below a “normal” BMI for me. I got to 180 fairly easily but now I am stuck at 169 and having a hard time losing. Still, even if I don’t get to 160 I feel the surgery was a success if I can maintain below 180. If I do start losing again at a steady rate I will shoot for 150 so I have a better cushion within the normal BMI range. So basically I suggest having a couple or even a few goals and adjusting as you get closer to each.

    End goal weight

    My practice hasn't had us pick one, but for my personal goal, I picked one that is on the low end of obese/high end of overweight as my "realistic/achievable goal" given my starting point. If I get there, I would have lost around 200 lbs, and by any measure that would be a major success and I'd be such a better place than I am now. Having said that, once I get to that "achieveable goal" I intend to reassess and aim for lower. I probably will get a body comp assessment at that point to see what would make sense with my muscle mass, since I do like to weight train. My dream number is the top of my healthy range but I'm trying to take it one step at a time.

    End goal weight

    I set my own goal weight, my surgeon does not set them as a general rule, as many don't. I picked a weight at the very high end of "healthy" BMI, borderline "overweight" category. This also aligns to the 70% of excess weight loss average for WLS, based on my starting weight. Knowing that I have been obese my entire life, my goal is to just be as healthy as possible. If I could get to a weight that is in that range, that would be great! That being said, I know that even that weight is likely a stretch, so I'm focusing more on other metrics than the scale (lab results, how I'm feeling in my body, how I feel when I'm working out, etc.).
  22. How did you go about setting your end goal? I have realised that because I have been overweight for so long I don't know where I want to ultimately end up as I don't know how it will look or feel. It is not something I have ever discussed with my surgeon either. Just wondered how others decided!
  23. Has anyone else kind of hit a stall? I knew it would happen I just didn’t know it would be this soon. I am almost 2 months postop and just started solid foods and it seems like I am gaining everything I lost but am following diet restrictions

    High BMI and….

    You will be fine. My BMI was 34 when I had it done privately in the UK and I didn’t have any severe health issues relating to weight. They will take you through a screening process but that’s mainly to ascertain that you understand what the surgery entails and that it’s permanent etc etc.

    Life Abroad with VSG

    Recipe ideas: Pinterest or Skinnytaste Workout Ideas: YouTube has great short 10 minute low impact workouts that you can do after VSG. You can do anything, like walking in place, short walks, etc. immediately and I highly recommend walking immediately after surgery, but no weight lifting for 4 weeks, nothing more than 10 lbs I think. Foods: Without nutritional labels to see if it's sugar-free or not, that's a tough one. Obviously meats are high protein which is good. Cheeses have protein. Can't go wrong with meat and cheese. You already know about fresh veggies and fruits. No, I'm lost without my food labels. Sorry.
