I'm new on this site. I'm waiting to be approved for the sleeve. I only told my mom, sister an bf. I'm so nervous bc it seems like all our get together a involve food. It will be very different. I also work at a Doctors office an we have Rep lunches every week. I know I'm going to get the"that's all your eating"! But I'm willing to sacrifice all of that to feel good about myself. I know there will be a light at the end of the tunnel. Just keep your head up and think about how health you will be and how great your going to look.

I worry about it as well. I'll say this, it takes some work to really stretch a pouch out. My best friend had a RNY GB 12 years or so ago. He eats whatever he wants, and has failed miserably at the whole weight loss thing (from 700 pounds to 400) but even with that, he can't eat more than a single piece of pizza at a time. His issue, is that he'll start on a pizza at 1700, and by the time he goes to bed, he will have eaten the whole thing, one slice at a time. So, i'll go on record stating that while it is certainly possible to stretch your pouch, it is not easy, if it were my freind would be dead by now. In fact, he has a number of extremely severe health issues relating to, you guessed it, morbid obesity. He has become so anemic that he has to to the hospital three days a week and be infused with Iron via a slow drip, as his body has completely lost the ability to absorb Iron. His Vitamin D is heading the same way, I think his current Vitamin D is 200,000 IU a week and even that has not brought his levels up to normal. He'll die fairly soon I think, we've been friends for 30 years, and I'll miss him, but this is all his doing. I talked until I was blue in the face and he laughed everything off. Oh and he needs double knee replacements, complete knee replacements, at 42 years old. Not good.

I was banded on June 8 in Acuna by Dr. Rodriguez. It was absolutely a wonderful experience. All of the staff in Mexico were wonderful. All of the females were playing with our 11-month-old son the whole time. The friendliness of everyone there really made it an easy experience. I cannot remember much before surgery. I just remember waking up asking my wife stupid questions. I wasn't in much pain. I knew I had the surgery, because I could feel a little tightness in my stomach. But other than that, it really went by fast. My doctor told me that out of all of his patients that week, I was by far the easiest one. Don't know if it had to do with the pre-op diet or not. I only did about 8 days, not the 2 weeks I was supposed to do. Maybe the fact that I don't drink helped? I have no idea. Either way, he said I was VERY easy. The night before, we were told we can eat whatever we want. You better believe I got my groove on. I took the wife to the Cheesecake Factory in San Antonio. I don't know HOW much bread I had. I do know I had a lot of it. I ordered a double cheeseburger with fries. I also ordered 2 different Desserts to go. It was so so good I can taste it to this day. lol Anyway, here I am, 9 days post-op. I have lost about 15 lbs. since surgery. I have been doing pretty well. I wanted to kick myself the other day because I had some sugar free pudding and I'm still on liquids. I haven't been having as much Protein as I should be though. I have to step it up. This low card Protein Drink is just so disgusting that it is making me sick. I guess I'll order powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury or something. I haven't felt much pain whatsoever. My incisions are still healing, but other than that, I wouldn't even know the band is there if I didn't know I have it. In the beginning, I'd get full off of 4 oz. of Water and protein. Now, there is MUCH less restriction. But I still can't see myself eating NEARLY as much as I used to when I am out of the post-op diet phase. I haven't even been really tempted by any junk food yet. If anything, the band has taught me to be discipline. Actually, the pre-op phase did that. Now, I don't know if I don't eat bad foods because I am strong or because I don't want to lose my investment. Anyway, good luck to anyone else who HAS taken this journey or who PLANS to take this journey.

I wasn't up for it. I was swolen and uncomfortable for about a week. It was kindof hard to walk and sit comfortably too. But, I was back to 100% after that first week. It's different for everyone though . . .

I'm doing good. Trying to only weigh myself once or twice a week. It's not about the number on the scale, it's about how I feel...at least for now!
-
hello back! I think I started around the same BMI as you, though 2 years older, hahaha. It's not an easy journey, but I think it's worth it. 3 weeks ago, I weighed 30lbs more...its all just unbelievable. Unfortunately, I have crappy student insurance, so I bypassed all the stuff you are about to go through and funded it myself. Best of luck!:tongue2:

question about calories
♥LovetheNewMe♥ replied to ivyh's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When i was still losing steadily, I took in 800-1200 calories perday. Everyday was different. This was ok for me until I got down to the last 30 lbs and I stalled again. I was told to eat more and that took me time to learn to do. My trainer increased my calories to 1250 daily and it took me about 2 weeks before I was able to achieve this but once I did I was able to lose weight again. Since being at goal I have struggled with eating over 1200 calories. I am suppose to eat 1400-1600 calories now and I still only average between 1100-1200 calories aday, thus I continue to lose weight. I have to eat constantly during the day, at least 3 snacks in order to get all my calories in. If you are losing weight, and are not hungry and healthy do not worry about the additional calories as long as you are getting your protein in. If not have a shake. -
Desperately need a connection here.

Hi Polly, I hope all goes well with your appointment and you and your PA can decide your best option. I am currently waiting on approval for lapband to RNY revision surgery. My Surgeon suggested RNY for me due to all my GERD issues. I went in wanting the sleeve, but he said with all the reflux and aspirating I was having, RNY would be better for me. My insurance advocate had put in for a surgery date of October 14th, to allow time for insurance company to review my info and give an answer, but I am hoping to get it changed to an earlier date. I was told by my insurance company that if a later date is placed on the paperwork, they would review it at a later time because it isn't a priority, but if it is put in for like a couple of weeks before a projected date, they would get to it faster. I am so ready to get rid of this band and get back on track with my weight loss. I hate that I have gained about 40lbs back since the start of my problems two years ago, but I am not giving up on that healthy life I sought after. Good luck to you!!!!!! And everyone else -
Hi! My name is Roz, I am a 43 year old mother of 3 from NY. I had my surgery on July 20, 2011with Dr. Vamulapalli at Montefiore Medical Center. My surgery went well but I had to stay an extra day in the hospital because I wasn't able to drink enough liquids. On surgery day I was 248 and today, a month later I am 223. I thought that i had prepared myself for life after surgery but it is nothing like I anticipated. All of the sugar free drinks that I loved while preparing for surgery now leave a weird metal taste in my mouth and I was even having trouble with water and protein. There was a week that I threw up everyday, but I think that I may have been eating too fast and once I drank a little to soon. Because I could only eat about an once every few hours without the protein in between my puree stage has been extended. I'm still not eating verymuch but I can drink water now. I haven't lost any weight in the past 2 weeks or so so I'm a little scared. I worked out a little last night and that went well. I'm just really nervous and have not idea what is going on. I hope things get better.

2 days post op - feeling fine
notmeanymore replied to lmedalsy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Congrats! Welcome to the losers bench. I too had a fairly incident free recovery. I was only nauseous in the hospital but never threw up. Im 6 weeks out and havent thrown up once (knock on wood). The only time I needed my pain meds was in the morning and only for a couple of days. I eat about 2 ounces of food every couple of hours or so. I never eat to the point of being uncomfortable. I drink decaf tea pretty much all day long and can drink just like I did pre-surgery. I dont have to watch my sips any more which is good. I do take little bits though and ate with a baby spoon until I trained myself how big of bites to take. Good luck on your journey! -
Yes i felt that to, its like I knew exactly where the Fluid that i was drinking was when it passed that certain part of my chest, I always braced my self for that passing point. It went away after about a week. Im 2 weeks out tomorrow Hang in there. it gets better.

Dietician and Surgeon appointment at Kaiser
heidikate posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
In one week today I have my orientation and Dietician and Surgeon appointments at Kaiser. Is there any certain way I should eat during this week that might help me to get my surgery date sooner? Also has/is anyone out there gotten/getting their surgery done at Kaiser Permanente? Thanks, Heidi -
Learning and preparing ... who submits the request?
Garifab_VSG posted a topic in Insurance & Financing
Hello, everyone In all my reading on here, I can't quite put my finger on one thing, and I'm sure each person's insurance works differently, however - who actually gathers and submits the information for this surgery request to the insurance company? Is it the bariatric team performing your surgery? Or do (did) you do it yourself? My first appt. (consultation) with the bariatric surgeon is two weeks from today, but in making the appointment, the nurse who answered the phone said that my insurance is one of the easiest to deal with, so that made me think she is familiar with the entire submission process and obtaining of approval. So I got to wondering if they will be handling all that for me (with help from me on gathering the info, of course.) -
Pre-Bander in NC - Scared to Death.
elgrad replied to NancyNC's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Dear Nancy, I was also scared and a lot overwhelmed when I first started this trip. There is a lot of information to absorb and if you have problems dealing with change, it can to be a bit much. Here's what I would suggest: Take a deep breath and try to focus on one issue at a time. Read as much as you can on the subject. There is a very good book out there titled - Bariatric surgery for Dummies (or something like that)- that talks about all the different types of bariatric surgery and everything about each one. I started with a seminar from my surgeons office, worked thru the book and came to this website, a lot! The pre-op tests will take some time and if you are using insurance, they may require you to take at a minimum 3 months before you can have the surgery. That is useful, "considering it" time, for you. I did all of that and had my surgery last week. Since I have type II diabetes, high blood pressure and sleep apnea, I can understand all your concerns. I have been off of my diabetes meds since the day before surgery (my numbers are consistantly low) only on high blood pressure (and may come off those in 3 months) and hopefully will be off my CPAP machine in 6 months. This option does work. It is not easy and you will find yourself wondering about it all the way, but for me, it is already accomplishing what I wanted it to do - get me off the meds! Please, take your time to think about it, don't feel rushed and use the resources that are out there. Then, it may not feel so overwhelming. Please feel free to contact me privately if you would like more support - elgrad@hotmail.com. I am also in North Carolina. Be calm and breath deep. Elgrad -

I am one week from maintenance but doing well. I think I can eat most anything (within reason) and just focus on protein then calories. I am still trying to figure out my veggies, but have has sweet potatoe, diced chicken, pumpkin Soup......... From what I read, alot of people can eat most everything their families do. Just focus on measuring and weighing portions. -
Caught A Chest Cold
frumpynomore replied to pennypup's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
The same thing happened to me! I called my doctor after about 1 week of being on antibiotics and told him that I had a surgery coming up and that I still had the cold. He put me on a stronger antibiotic. I then called my surgeon and told him what was going on and he said that I would be fine for surgery that was scheduled 4 days from then. He told me to continue taking the new antibiotic and he would still do surgery considering I wasn't extremely ill. It all worked out so I would advise you to call your primary doc and see if he can give you something stronger and then call your surgeon and explain the situation. Good luck!!! -
Hi I've been on optifast for 1 week 2 more weeks until surgery. I do feel hungry too. Night time is the worst--so I'm saving a shake for later at night. Does anyone else feel low energy and more tired than usual?

Donali, that was truly an awesome post. Once again, you are my rockin' hero. Everything she said was right on the money. You will learn your own personal stop signals. Mine are the deep breath, usually followed by a couple of hiccups about three minutes after I've stopped eating. And I can vouch for the negative effects of swallowing that saliva. Man, is that the wrong thing to do. I've had a tiny stuckage turn into the PB from hell just because I didn't feel like going to the sink to get rid of the saliva. Do yourself a favor, spit it out. Trust us on this one.

Well, here it is my first blog. Kinda weird feeling, but i've been wanting to do one for a while. i've been approved for surgery after a year long supervised diet. tried b4 to get it done in shaumburg, but insurance considered the surgery experimental at the time. so glad they reconsidered. i'm not at all scared. i'm very excited. i'm more scared about the 2 week liquid diet pre-op. did it b4, it's really hard. i've been doing 50 minutes a day of cardio for a week now. i had a really bad headache today, though :sick and didn't exercise. i did notice that my legs are looking shaplier, though. i'm starting to think about exercise 1st when i wake up instead of food. now THAT'S different.:clap2: still not doing well with the diet or strength training, though. have to start that soon.

Correct restriction or not?? Please help me...
Susie Girl 75 posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi Everyone! I need some help... I had my third fill last week. I wish I could tell you how many cc's I have by my doctor wont tell me that. When I ask, he tells me 'enough' ... ok, fine... so he doesn't want me getting hung up on a number... I understand that totally. So, here's my situation. I can eat everything except for bread and bagels... I start to pb and get stuck, etc... you know the drill. But on most all other foods like chicken breat, veggies, (whole wheat) Pasta, etc...I do chew well and I have noticed that I am eating slower than I used to!!! The thing that has me worried is taht I can eat more than just a few bites. Not that much more, but more than the suggested 1/2 cup at a time... I find that it keeps me full for hours after and I am not hungry first thing in the morning like I used to be. I have also noticed I don't realy have a desire to snack inbetween meals, which is good... I guess I know that it's working, to a point but with the amount I can still eat, even though it's all healthy stuff... does that mean that I maybe need a slight fill still??? Can the veterans help out the newbie??? Thanks, Chi-Town Susie Girl -

This is my second day after having surgery definitely more painful my stomach today then it was yesterday. I think the pain is mostly around where the port is, but I'm not quite sure. I've been taking the liquid vicodin but it doesn't seem to be helping too much. Can I put ice packs on my stomach where the pain is? I know they told me not to drink cold liquids so I didn't know if I could use ice on my stomach. I'm hoping the pain goes away by Monday cause thats when I go back to work. At least I work from home and I'm only on the phone with doctors all day so I'm not expecting it to be too bad. Figuring if anything I'll just be tired. I do feel a bit hungry, but the soup broth seems to help. I am looking forward to losing weight getting back to my wedding size. I know I can do it I lost 15 pounds in the week and a half of preop.

Tingling and slight numbness at port site?
DarleneRN replied to Lorelei's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I will have had my band 2 weeks this monday,,,,yay puree! can't wait! lol...I had pain, pulling, tightness, tingling, and numbess at my port site. It gets a little better everyday. I was so concerned, it seemed everyone on here felt 'great' after 2 to 5 days...I was panicked too! My Dr said some people heal slower than others. For some reason, the last 2 days (still same symptoms, but much less) I am feeling MUCH better. Anyway, sounds normal, don't panic, and good luck!!! -
Wife Is Being Really Negative
cookies replied to jared's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I paid for a band out of pocket over ten years ago. It functioned for ... three or four months. That's it. No restriction at all after that. I have confirmation that my band is defective (it "balloons" up on one side when filled rather than equally around the stomach), but as a self-pay there wasn't much I could do about it because I had spent all the money I had on getting the band. Now I'm hoping to be able to do a revision to the sleeve in one procedure. I may need two procedures (one to take the band out, another for the sleeve). As a self-pay this is all very frustrating. Do your research. There are people that are very happy with the band, but there are lots that are not. In the end, it's your decision. Whatever you decide, just make sure you are fully educated and you know what awaits you.
