I am currently 6 weeks PO and experience left shoulder pain almost every time I eat. Sometimes it is a minor nuisance, while sometimes it is agony that has me screaming in pain. I've noticed that the bad ones happen when I have meat. It normally lasts about 20 minutes and the pains feel like intervals of spasms and nerve pain. I am aware this could have something to do with gas, nerves, and the diaphragm. Can anyone elaborate on this issue? Also how long is too long? Is there treatment?

check with your clinic. I was able to swallow all my pills whole right away except for two of them - I had to wait a couple of weeks on those. -
Alcohol 3 weeks post sleeve op.
Cutenchubby replied to Donna zariya's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Not sure if it’s too late to chime in to be helpful but I’ll give you my experience and advice. I was not given much guidance by my program about alcohol other than to avoid it for the empty calories aspect. As a Jew, wine is part of our holidays, rituals and celebrations so it’s hard to avoid. Yea, I could do juice but I don’t want to, I like wine and I’m an adult, damnit. I had a small glass at home a week or so post op and noticed that it feels a little funny when it hits my stomach but that goes away quickly and I drink a lot less than I used to. I feel it sooner, but once I stop drinking the buzzed feeling goes away sooner too. So overall for me a pro. I drink 1-3 glasses a week (still much less than I did before) and do not binge cause I don’t want to get hammered in a hurry. If you’re going to drink at an event, I’d recommend trying it at home to see how you handle it. That way if you have a problem, you’re in a safe place. I can’t speak to the dumping as although I drink sweet wine, I haven’t had an issue. I just treat it like any other liquid and don’t chug or take big sips. This way, one glass lasts a lot longer too. Another bonus in my opinion. If your program specifically forbids it, I’d recommend following that recommendation just to save the hassle of having to tell them what you did lol. And I agree that if you chose not to drink then it shouldn’t be a problem. If you need to lol like you’re drinking you can always have the bartender mix up a cranberry and water cocktail or similar mixed drink minus the alcohol. If you chose to drink, you can nurse a glass of wine for an hour or more at a time and ask the bartender to pour you a weak cocktail, should you desire you a mixed drink. Bartenders are like hairdressers, they’re good at keeping secrets 😉 -
June 2022 surgery buddies

Hi, Emily: My pre-procedure experience sounds similar to yours. I, however, had to do an echocardiogram stress test and I had to wait 2 weeks for an appointment for that. I did an at-home sleep study, and then somehow something ran off the rails. A CPAP machine was supposed to be ordered for me and a couple of weeks elapsed before that slip-up was discovered. My surgeon's admin told me on Tuesday that Cigna takes about 2 weeks to go through an insurance submission. Apparently, the practice I am using has an Insurance Coordinator who goes through everything in my file to be certain that CIGNA gets every piece of paper required. I'm just waiting now. Good luck to you. -
I would have it checked out if you're nervous about it. But it doesn't sound like a DVT. I had one three years ago and the swelling was obvious.

I'm self pay and doing my procedure in Mexico. The physician once approved had the coordinator send over all available dates. I would have been able to do this last month or this month at the time of my approval, but my mom decided she also wanted to do the procedure at the same time. Her clearance was more involved as she had to have an EKG which led to needing to see a cardiologist who said she was fine but wanted her to have an echo done to be certain. SO...after having months of delay, by the time we were both approved, the soonest available was June 15. My oldest daughter(14) happens to be out of town that week, so we pushed it back to the following week, so she could be around to help with the youngest(3) while I was out of the country.

RaisnHL- I had to complete my 6 months of medically supervised dieting with a dietician, psych eval, EDG, blood work and pre-op clearance from my PCP before they scheduled my surgery date. I was told it typically takes 6 weeks for insurance authorization so they tentatively schedule you 6 weeks out. I also had have a phone call with a financial coordinator to discuss the cost and payment of the surgery.

Gas X after vertical gastric sleeve.
Sleeve_Me_Alone replied to Vivis's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yep, I took it every 4ish hours for the first 2 weeks post-op. I didn't have a ton of gas pain, which I'm not sure how much was my surgeon and how much was the gas-x, but most surgeons do recommend it at least for the first few days after surgery. Walking regularly, sleeping somewhat propped up, and a heating pad all also help. -
May 6th! Liquid diet for one week starts TODAY. Right now! 🤣

Alcohol 3 weeks post sleeve op.
fourmonthspreop replied to Donna zariya's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Agree with this. It's all about how you feel and if you think you can handle it. At the end of the day it's best to stick to your dieticians word. I'm not trying to give you a reason to do anything but I have noticed the wls guidelines in the US are very anti drink vs. Europe. I personally think you're too early on and your stomach is probably still healing. I will tell you I went against my dieticians word and had a drink before the 6 month mark she gave me because I go to a lot of events and parties. I had a long talk with myself and my mom (who is a physician) and came to the conclusion to just try one drink. I made sure it had no sugar or carbonation in it so I did a vodka water with lemon juice. Personally it didn't hit me any different than pre op. I had the drink 2 months and some weeks post op. I will say you can feel the alcohol a lot more (not in the getting drunk sense) but you can feel it go down your esophagus and into your stomach and intestines and it hurts and burns and even makes you cramp a little. Not very pleasant. Anyway, it's up to you. 3 weeks is pretty early on. I will say at 3 weeks I was so focused on feeling better and hydrated I did not want a drink. It might make you feel awful because you're recovering. In my opinion, just have a mock tail. If not, try to decide if it's really worth it, if you can handle maybe getting sick at a big event or bad dehydration without being able to chug water or eat greasy foods the next day. Nausea and fatigue after eating
catwoman7 replied to fourmonthspreop's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
if this is happening right after eating, another strong possibility is a stricture. They happen to about 5% of gastric bypass patients, and you're in the right window of time for it (they almost always occur within 1-3 months post-op. They're very rare after that point). I had two of them - one at four weeks out and the other at around eight weeks out. They're an easy "fix". Regardless, let your clinic know what's going on. What you're experiencing is not normal. -

February 2022 Surgery Buddies
Shikin.k replied to MeganMyers's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am starting to go back to my old habit of grazing and other mindless eating habits. I don’t eat as much of course but the habit is not something I want to continue. It’s the festive season in my community so there’ve been more snacks around the house. Trying to curb that. My water intake hasn’t been great but my protein’s not too bad. I aim for 20-25g (about 800oz I think) Anything less and my lethargy will render me useless. I’m envious of all the weight loss you guys have been having. I’m only at -40lbs 10 weeks post surgery. I haven’t been moving as much though. I got covid 7 weeks post surgery. The recovery is slow and the fatigue is TERRIBLE. -
April 2022 Surgery Buddies

I am having a lot of pain in the shoulders & chest & collarbone. I have to lay on my back with a pillow under my butt and that seems to stop the pain going to my shoulders. They told me to not take my vitamins until the 2 week mark. Good luck too!! -

You are right this is hard! But worth the effort. My doc started me out sipping 1 ounce every 15 minutes, it seemed crazy at first but the small sips were comfortable. I am 3 weeks out (RNY) and drinking 52-64 oz a day comfortably now. I keep my drinks varied. Plain water is of course the best. As far as food goes, go slow. Introduce 1 food at a time 1-2 tbls. at a meal. I was on clear liquids for 2 Wk post op. Most of us went from clear liquids to purée. I am using a lil baby spoon and a lil seafood fork to keep my bites small. As for vitamins, they are very important post op because our nutrition is so limited. You can try a Bariatric High Protein Meal Replacement like Bariatric Advantage for a lil extra nutrition in your protein drinks. Talk to your doc or dietitian Re your challenges. This will pass. Keep trying, but go slow. -
It should be gone within a week at most. Some find it’s gone in less time. It just depends on how much they used & how you process it out of your body. Walk, heat compresses, long slow deep breaths, gasx, warm drinks can offer relief. I used to stretch my arms up & down to sort of try to pump the gas out 😁. Pain meds don’t seem to help the gas pain just the surgical pain.
-
I had hoped that by day 3 or 4 that pain would diminish, and for me, the first turning point was at about day 6 or 7. Til then I was a mess! I couldn't even inhale. (For me it was more at the incision sites than gas pains.) The very strong pain meds really helped, especially at night when I just needed to sleep. Don't expect it to be gone by day 4, but by next week this time you will be amazed at the difference!!!! I know that doesn't help now, but maybe emotionally it will help... Please make sure you have a really good pain reliever, like Tylenol with codeine (which my surgeon prescribed). it made all the difference the first few days. Best of luck, and please hang in there!

I had surgery on April 18th. For me the gas pains lasted about 3 days. I needed help to get out of chairs for about a week. I still cant lay in my bed. I have been sleeping sitting up in a recliner and sofa.

Hey! I had my bypass Feb 14 this year. It's been pretty smooth sailing honestly up until the last week. Everytime I eat, about 15 minutes later I get extremely nauseous and even start retching. I threw up the other day actually after eating a protein yogurt but nothing came out. Just some red stuff from a pill I took. I'm not eating sugar or high carb foods. It's all stuff I ate before no problem. Liquids seem to be fine but I've had things like eggs, avocado, protein yogurt, cheese and cooked vegetables and wow do I feel like I need to throw up after. I eat slow and stick to small portions too. And then every now and then after eating I get incredibly fatigued and feel like I need to go to sleep. I've never had issues with insulin/pre diabetes or diabetes and feel like that's unlikely since I've been in weight loss mode and barely eating. It's getting difficult to reach my protein goal because I get so sick all of a sudden after eating. I really don't want to fall behind on things. Wondering if this is a stricture or normal? Am I becoming intolerant to certain foods or is the restriction just going strong? Feels so all of a sudden. Is there something I can do for a couple days to "reset" like only liquids or something? My insurance doesn’t cover WLS. I am making arrangements to be able to pay out of pocket and started the process at Duke in NC but then the surgeon said she wouldn’t do the surgery since my insurance wouldn’t cover the surgery due to risk of complication and high medical bills. Has anyone else experienced this??? I have an appointment with WakeMed BARIATRICS on May 10th, I explained to them what happened at Duke and they seemed surprised by it and said they except self pay. I am just terrified that I am going to be be crushed again for the 2nd time in 3 weeks and don’t know if I can take it. Any advice??? I have checked in to ACA insurances and multiple agents said none of the policies cover WLS.

I am happy to hear you finally have your surgery date. Don't stress over any of it and just follow what your doc suggests. My surgery and recovery have gone extremely well. I did hit a stall for a week in my weight loss but am doing all according to plan and it will turn around. I pray all will go as well for you. When/How to buy new clothes
lizonaplane replied to lizonaplane's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Update: I initially started this post WAY back. I've gone from a 3x/24 to a M/10! What I did was buy some stuff at thrift stores, and then a few things in stores/online, just enough for a week's worth of clothes in any one size. I have found that I can actually wear things a BIT big, so for example, the pants I just bought (one pair of casual pants and one pair of jeans) are a size 10, but today I am wearing size 14 dressier pants, which are loose, but since they're stretchy, they don't look ridiculous. Also, I have some shirts in every size from S-XL that fit. I had all sorts of hopes to get everything from thrift stores but in the end, I am too picky for that. I have been donating my "bigger" clothes on Buy Nothing or if no one in my neighborhood wants them, I donate them to the thrift store. Mostly I'm able to give my bigger clothes to my neighbors on Buy Nothing, so they are not going in a landfill just yet! -

Pickle salad was just lettuce with cut up pickles. They were just two foods that I was allowed unlimited and who wants to eat just lettuce so I cut up pickles and told myself I could have as much pickle salad as I wanted. When I was on that diet for a week I had steak and grilled onion almost every night. My husband makes really good steak and caramelizes onions on the grill and I figured I would not be able to have steak for quite a while so I ate it till I was sick of it. You can also have chicken and other non starchy veggies.
