  1. My only issue was joint pain and that has eased up quite a bit with the weight loss. I wouldn’t lose hope quite yet though, you still have a little ways to go until goal so you may still see relief from some of those conditions. Hopefully all. I do see a lot of people on here saying that those types of things did resolve with post surgery. I just don’t know how close to goal they were when it happened.
  2. Every single one of my doctors encouraged me to get bariatric surgery because they said that it would cure all my comorbidities. I have type 2 diabetes, idiopathic intercranial hypertension, migraine, GERD, and hypertension all of which they said would go away. I think I should have realized that was super optimistic. These are the same doctors that said if I lost 10% of my body weight, all of these would get better and they didn't. Well I've had the surgery. I've lost 93lbs so far and ... I still have every single one of those problems. I feel a bit mislead or maybe just broken. I have other medical problems besides those, they were just the ones they blamed on my weight. I like losing weight but had gotten my hopes up about being less impacted by these other diseases and it didn't pan out. Did it work out for anyone else and they actually had other medical problems resolve after surgery?
  3. Gee, that sounds very similar, although they told me (on this WEIRD group chat) that I could set everything for ASAP. Won't it be fun if that isn't correct? I have endoscopy, sleep study, cardiac clearance, upper GI, some other lung study (X-ray?) to do. I have a sneaking suspicion I'm going to have to carbo-load near the end of this stress, just to ensure that I don't lose too much weight. The whole 'lose but not too much!' thing is likely to drive me batty! Plus it seems extremely unproductive and antithetical to learning new habits. Trying to stay positive, but like I say, I'd prefer to type-A it, making specific goals of weight per week, IF they tell me the 'by when' date for losing.
  4. Hi, I just started with a Bariatric Center with the goal of gastric sleeve, and I'm confused enough it's frustrating. Had my first visit with surgeon, he told me that for my insurance, I should lose 10 lbs (no more without endangering my insurance).. Seems like it's five months until surgery, possibly six. I then attended a (no lies, pretty bad) online group nutritional presentation, that really skimmed over things like no caffeine and no carbonated bees, and was also informed that I had responsibilities to make ALL my pre op appointments myself, but I haven't been given any list of labs/tests to do so. I have no diet assigned... ? No instructions were specific about what I should be eating right now, but am trying to go for a LOT more protein and a LOT less carbs. Am I supposed to be starting with protein shakes? They mentioned, but no real clear direction. No followup appointments with the bariatric center have been scheduled as yet, no one has returned my call of last week, basically begging for my pre op appointment list. I try to be patient but am definitely a type A person who likes to plan. I am worried about losing too much weight and very confused about what specifically my diet IS. Already down about 2.5 pounds. I don't do well with uncertainty I guess. Also, the changes over the past two weeks, eating less, the ever=present journalling of food, the appointments I have been called for (apparently, not everything was my responsibility), the trying to lessen the caffeine, and my beloved sodastream plain seltzers, is difficult. I'm definitely planning to call the center with more specific questions this week, and in hopes I receive a call back, but can anyone give me a feel for what the first couple weeks in a program are like, and should I relax about what feels like chaos?
  5. Here Goes; I have been in denial & coming back home to this forum has made me "see" that I have a lot of work to do & accountability. In the Spring of 2020 during the height of COVID my neighbors dog ran out on me and as I stumbled while trying to get away from the dog I fell, hit the concrete, & couldn't move. I had broken a bone in my back. I cried at every day for at least 2 weeks due to the pain. I was immobilized and the work I did outside of my home that had me active, lifting heavy items, & always moving I could no longer due. Here 1 1/2 years later I continue to have back issues. If I walk too long, lift too much or sit too long I am in pain. Although I can't consume a lot of food at one time, I know I am getting calories in with the wrong things. After surgery I was no longer able to drink straight water, it would make me nauseated and it would come back up so I know I am not getting enough fluids in. I am vitamin deficient (lab results) and I have put too much of my time into helping family & friends that honestly, I forgot about me. I was at 163lbs now I am at 190. I was 33lbs from goal now I am at 60lbs from goal. I know to some it may not seem like a lot but most of us know losing 5lbs takes a lot of effort! Bariatric Pal Forums: Coming back home & reading posts after being away so long has made me look at myself in the mirror & remember what I did in the first place that made my weight loss successful. SO HERE I GO: recommitting to myself; committing to the 30/15 rule (wait to eat 15 mins after drinking and wait to drink 30 mins after eating), COUNTING my calories & making sure I get in my grams of protein (which Unjury is a great brand), finding health zero cal/sugar enhancers to get my water in daily; & getting back to strength training that would not put a strain on my back. I don't know about you guys but COVID time gave me an excuse to cancel my Planet Fitness membership 😕 Am I going to do what they call a "pouch reset"? Nawhhhh...I'm doing a recommitment to self reset. I know what to do & I have all the tools (food scale, portion control serving utensils etc.) I am raising the bar once again for my life. Thank you Fitness Pal Family for always being here and giving all of us prodigal children a home to come back to. eating reset back to basics.doc

    End goal weight

I picked a weight at the high end of a “normal weight” bmi for my height. that number was 195. I have gone 10 pounds passed that at this point. i adjusted my goal to be 165. Which means I have another 20 pounds to lose
  7. I've got the one sure-fire way to avoid stalls: Get off the scale. Scales are crazy-makers. You know the saying that a watched pot never boils? Well, a watched scale never moves. Trust your plan and the weight will come off. Good luck, Tek

  9. Hello everyone. On Tuesday, it will be 8 weeks since I had gastric sleeve surgery. I am having a long stall. It's been over two weeks where I keep gaining and losing the same 2 lbs. Is it normal to stall this long? Thank you.

    Gastric bypass sleeve

I had the sleeve then due to reflux I had to get a revision to a gastric bypass. I wish I knew that gastric bypass is far more effective for me in regards to weight loss, no reflux and no bowel issues. I would've gone straight to having the gastric bypass. I haven't had any problem maintaining my nutrition. Like the others, I take my MV every day and calcium supplements if I don't get enough calcium from my diet. My sleeve was on the large side so if you do decide to go this route, ask your surgeon what size your stomach will be. Mine started off at 10 ounces. I never stretched it but it was difficult to maintain a calorie deficiency. With the bypass, everything seems so natural for me. I feel great, small amounts satisfy me and literally zero side effects as far as bowel, acid reflux... Etc. Hope this helps.

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

October 8th, emergency surgery on the 10th, second emergency surgery on the 15th! Finally was able to start eating puréed foods at the very end of December/beginning of January. I was finally told I can eat foods except bread, pasta and raw vegetables but I can’t eat more than about 700 calories a day and now my weight loss has stalled and I don’t know why. It is very frustrating after all the issues I have had. Happily take advice, please!!!
  12. I would really suggest that you invest in some sessions with a trainer. If you want to build muscle then using machines and small weights really isn't the way to do it. Using free weights with proper technique is the way. Get a trainer who knows lifting, preferably a powerlifter and they can help you.
  13. Hi everyone. I don’t really know what I’m hoping to gain from this but I’m panicking about! Im 2 weeks post gastric sleeve and the first week I lost 11lbs (not as much as I thought I would but still good!) but this last week Iv lost 0.5lbs! Wth! Im so upset! Iv been doing everything Iv been told to! Please someone tell me this is normal or what I can do to actually fix this! Thankyou 😘

    Gout Flare-up, time-frame, and remedies

My brother had this same problem, doctor told him it would likely flare after his surgery. It sure did. Made the first weeks more miserable. On the flip side, surgeon said after that it should improve or go away after the weight loss.
  15. make sure you get adequate rest between workout days most people train 3 days rest 1, you will be able to gain muscle and tone up nicely providing you train correctly. you will need to lift the heaviest weight you can to build muscle and get that nice muscle definition, I would assume your gym would have someone there to guide you with this. It will take about 3 months for you to notice changes

    Life Abroad with VSG

Nice tip! Will definitely be adding that to my notes, especially since I know how to find all of that. I am a little concerned about dates as they have an extremely high sugar content and all my friends have told me that dates were their family trick to regain weight whenever they lost too much from being sick. So beyond Ramadan, I try to avoid them 😅They scared me away

    Gastric bypass sleeve

I've had both. I was sleeved in 2016 and did very well but then had some personal issues and put back most of the weight. I had the revision to a bypass last November and feel great and am doing well again. I was considering resleeving however I have had GERD for 11 years - it wasn't cured with the sleeve and it didn't get worse, but it didn't go away - and my doctor strongly recommended the bypass to avoid potential severe issues in the future from the GERD. I take the vitamins they recommend to avoid malnutrition and it seems to be working so far. The surgery for the sleeve is quicker than the surgery for the bypass since there's less moving stuff around, so the recovery can theoretically take a little longer, but I was in the hospital for only one night after both surgeries. The bypass was the "gold standard" for many many years and the statistics show that people with the bypass tend to lose SLIGHTLY more weight than those with the sleeve, all else being equal, but only a few percentage points. And you can certainly lose all the weight you need to lose with the sleeve, those are just overall statistics.

Only 9 pounds almost 4 weeks post op

Here it is almost 3 months for me and it seems like I’ve hit a stall again! I barely eat and having issues with hydration. This is becoming really frustrating just at about 40lbs. Since surgery on the 8th of Nov. but now no weight loss for a week. My level of frustration is UNEXPLAINABLE
  20. I’m most excited about chicken, especially hibachi chicken, I’m planning on just ordering the chicken and double veggies instead of rice. The place I go to has very moist chicken so hopefully it will go down well. I’m also excited about chili, shrimp, spinach and squash. Pre-op I could eat my weight in grilled shrimp, creamed spinach and sautéed squash lol I’m definitely taking notes on ideas people are giving me!
  21. @MandoGetsSleeved you’ve done so well. Congratulations. I understand the power of the number on the scale. It can make your day or tear you down. I’m battling it now - only over a good kilo or so that won’t budge but I don’t want that number on the scale to be what it is. It’s incredible how demoralising even a single kg can be. I’m very fearful it may be the herald of more gain. (Damn 3rd year regain.) I wonder if where you are now is the weight your body is happy at even though your mind is not. Remember unfortunately not everyone gets to their goal though you’re so close which can make it more challenging to accept. Are you satisfied with your food intake & activity levels at the moment? Does it limit or restrict you doing things you enjoy like socialising, etc? To lose more & then maintain at a lower weight will mean you will need to eat less & exercise more than you do now at your current weight. But saying all that if you want to lose more go for it. Have a chat with your dietician to see if there’s anything else you can do - sometimes a small tweak can make a huge difference. Do check your body measurements too to allow for muscle gain or fat redistribution (it happens). All the best.

    Food Before and After Photos

Too kind @Sophie7713 but I am surviving. As I said it seems to be the specific extras I use to boost my protein intake I’m struggling to find. Hunted & gathered at a different store this morning & found the water I prefer (am not crazy some water tastes hideous & our local water supply is very ‘dirty’ tasting at the moment because of heavy rains) & a couple of tubs of the 20g protein yoghurt I like. Forgot to look for my protein bars but I’m rationing the ones I have. Ok with toilet paper as being a single person it takes a while to go through a pack. 😉 Not like my brother’s family - with 5 females in the house they go through a roll a day 😱. At least, I’m pretty good with throwing a few things in a pot and coming up with a yummy soup or stew or stir fry dish like your chilli. Having a few good stores in your pantry & freezer are the way to go to boost flavour & ingredients. I hear you about the couple of pounds gain. I’m still haven’t really knocked off my Christmas kilo either. I thought I had but no. Sigh!
  23. You may not be able to "build" a lot of muscle definition. It's actually really really hard to "gain" muscle weight, especially for women, people in their 40s or older, and people on a low calorie diet. That doesn't mean you shouldn't do strength training; it absolutely is important for maintaining muscle mass which is often lost when you lose weight quickly. Also, you may have lose skin which could interfere with measuring any muscle gains. Maybe I'm wrong - but don't expect to see a huge gain even over many months Good luck!
