    Any Atlanta Ga sleevers???

I am in Buckhead and like you, am still adjusting 3 months post-op. My BMI was not that high but the weight loss to date is slow but steady. It’s a mixed bag of emotions but I truly believe this surgery has improved my health, well being and life expectancy. Did tons of research, was pleased with my Doctor but had a less than stellar recovery. I am perplexed as my skin is excessively dry— the droopy skin is becoming pronounced but happy to say I am off BP meds. I track everything on Fitness Pal and host a Bariatric sharing community there. There’s about 60 of us sleevers experiencing this journey together.
  2. Hello Everyone, It has been a very long time since I have been to this forum and I wanted to check in to see how everyone is doing. I also wanted to catch up with my crazy life. Anyway I have been offline in the bariatric world just living my life. After a while things just start settling down and years go by... times change... faces get older and brains get used to life in the "new normal". I don't know if an of you will know my story so to make it short I have been through THREE WLS's. Yes, I said three... a lapband, a Gastric Sleeve and finally I resolved to be a RnY Bypasser. Ha! No regrets.. well maybe a few.. I'm human after all. ANYWAY!! I need to reconnect because I have NOT been working out much at all. Just the very minimum and even these past few weeks I have done nothing. No bueno! So, as I was lying in bed just now something just zapped me the hell out of it and I decided I needed to get UP!! Sheesh... So, here I am! Ready to get back to my serious workout and being kind to my body. My muscles are crying to come back out and play. I'm here to chat anytime. I probably have the most experience of anyone you'll ever meet as far as weight loss, gains, all surgery types, workouts, eating plans... anything. But I also need some accountability too. I'm older now and I see it. I see that I can't do this alone. I need my bariatric friends for guidance and a KICK IN THE BUTT! A shout out to anyone who remembers me. Check in and say hi! I really miss you guys. Much love and all peace. Irene and my most recent selfie. I'm on Facebook and IG too. FB: Irene Janel Avila and IG: Pookies_Mama

    Aenta Insurance tips for approval!

First, I assume you called Aetna to make sure bariatric surgery is covered on your plan. Then read Aetnas clinical policy for obesity surgery and make sure you meet all the criteria listed & that you have done the required Physician-supervised nutrition and exercise program or Multi-disciplinary surgical preparatory regimen. If you've done everything required then you should be approved without issue. Good luck!
  4. I'm not talking the first couple of weeks post op but several months out (and further) But has anyone noticed a substantial difference between satiety and fullness when incorporating protein shakes into their diet? I recently began using several protein shakes a day for convience when working long hours, and find myself getting much much hungrier despite my protein intake substantially increasing on days where I consume protein shakes. Ive been looking at literature on solids VS liquids and satiety and there's not a ton of it focused on the subject especially in bariatric patients. And it's a shame because protein shakes will usually have much better macros than real food and are incredibly convient. Anyone know of any literature on the topic or have experienced options (and no I'm not talking about switching to a liquid diet, just getting maybe 30-40% of daily calories from shakes)
  5. I'm only 11 months post-op and I've been stalled since Christmas. I haven't lost a single pound my entire spring semester and this week I even gained a couple back. I had short stalls here and there in the first 7 months, but they quickly resolved when I upped my water or salt intake. Now I have been tweaking my diet, my exercise, my protein intake, my water intake for 4 months and NOTHING HELPS. I'll admit the last month or so I haven't been a star bariatric patient with my carb and sugar intake, but I think that only started because of how frustrated I was with how long I'd been stalled despite doing everything I needed to be doing. I've always been the kid who constantly tried to eat healthy and exercise and could never lose the freaking weight and now I just feel like I'm right back there the way I was pre-op. I keep going to my surgeon and nutritionist and do what they are telling me to do and it still doesn't work. I recently added a weekly cheat day for the sake of my mental health and I found it helps keep me on track during the week. Every Saturday I eat to my heart's content with no guilt in the hopes that it will shock my metabolism a little bit. However, despite being completely clean during the week and going to the gym at least 3 times a week the scale is not budging. I try not to count calories because my surgeon always advised against it and I think it's a little unhealthy too. And before anyone tells me to restrict my calorie intake, I have TRIED and I just get shaky and lightheaded throughout the day and feel like I'm starving myself. I'm over here trying to build a healthy relationship with my body, not trying to starve it. If anyone has any words of advice or crazy outside-the-box tricks that got them out of a long stall, I'm all ears.
  6. I never did the chew 50 times thing, I agree, it's gross. I paid extra attention to chewing when I first transitioned to solid foods. But I just chewed till it was all broken down, and didn't chew past that. I had no issues with any food I ate, so I got more relaxed. After the first week or two on solids through today I just chew my normal amount, and it's fine. I wouldn't worry too much about getting off of protein drinks. At the beginning our stomach capacity is so small that it is hard to get to 60 g only on solids. I drink one protein drink in the morning, That gets me to 32 g, then I can usually get the rest in throughout the day. You like plenty of good protein sources, like eggs and chicken and deli meat. You're overthinking this! Oh, I also supplement my protein with some of the Bariatric Pal & Medifast soups and such, some are tasty and painless ways to get additional protein.

How did you pick your doctor?

I did a LOT of research. My criteria: Doctor had to be board certified and have a stellar reputation. (My doc is actually ON the board of bariatric surgeons here who creates protocol for certification) Make sure to ask your doctor how many procedures he/she does each week, and how many procedures they've done total. Some surgeons will provide success statistics for their patients. Hospital had to be a Center of Excellence. I wanted everyone involved in my care to have experience dealing with lots of bariatric patients. I wanted a ward dedicated to bariatric surgery....not just a couple of beds. Hospital had to be a major trauma center. I wanted a big enough hospital to attract and retain surgical talent and have good resources for unexpected cardiovascular events. I wanted a big enough bariatric center to have a dedicated 24/7 emergency line and an excellent staff for follow ups (which are crucial to safety and success) I was particularly interested in post surgical diets. While I was willing to do a keto based diet for a short period of time, I really hate how I feel on keto...and a lot obariatric doctors push it. My brain feels sluggish and my cholesterol goes up. None of these things are acceptable to me....so I needed a program that worked with low glycemic carb eaters who like a lot of plant based protein. (I'm not a vegetarian, but I am not a huge fan of getting the bulk of my protien from whey and meat) My program works with a lot of international clients with different dietary preferences, vegans, etc. My diet (Mayo Clinic Diet) was well received at my program. My program fit these criteria, and is associated with a well respected major research hospital. I've been really happy with my choice:)
  8. And any,of you that want to chat with my sweet 72 year old self, look me up. I would rather lurk on Bariatric Pal than to do🏡 housework. I figure if doctors can practice💊 medicine I can practice housework, who knows there might be a wonderful breakthrough. in it, may be a floor that scrubs itself or dust that evaporates, Well it COULD HAPPEN! Most days if the police came in here they would say "there was evidence,of a struggle," only real struggle is me trying to get away!😭

    Just starting the process??

Welcome @kimberlymi, it's me , I'm one of those evil,Buckeyes, I live in Central Ohio, 48 miles NE of Columbus in Mount Vernon Ohio. Where in Michigan are you located? Just being nosy, I'll even love you even if you're floating down the Huron River in a canoe. Mucho Michiganders on here. Tuckersmom just had surgery in Flint, but the Barifriend I would recommend you follow and who has been super nice and informative is CreekImp. If she chats with you you'll learn so,much about weigh loss etc. Very smart, you can't go wrong, with her friendship. There are over a dozen and I'm sure if they see the "mi" in your pen name they will make themselves known . If you have any questions, please ask. If I don't have an answer someone on Bariatric Pal will, okay? At any rate you are very welcome to join us, we hope you'll like us and want,to stay awhile😜
  10. The only specialist I ever interviewed, was my children's pediatrician. I had been a small town girl, a general practice physician had sufficed for my needs. Now I had moved to the Big City where there was more diversity of specialties, I was,all pregnant with child#2. I asked my friends, called Nationwide Children's Hospital and asked for a listing of doctors practicing in that area of Franklin County Ohio. One name constantly came up so I called his office And arranged to,meet with him. A very nice person, a more than competent physician who took wonderful care of my children as long as we lived in that locale. I have never interviewed a Bariatric Surgeon. I called, his recommended hospital and they assigned him to me. Would I have chosen my ex-surgeon? Probably for he was like a coral snake, not unattractive, even pretty in coloration, but highly, poisonous and treacherous and no antivenom readily available. Am I. bitter? Well yes but I even more resent the waste of my time and my insurance company's money on someone with no substance, he was all smoke and mirrors and I was too dumb or naive to see through him. My new program I go into with eyes wider open, I have new glasses and I hope they will enable me to see better. This time it will be their responsibility to win my trust and If there is any termination of our relationship it will be from me before,my self esteem even sustains any bruising, before,my reputation has any trace of besmirchment. An old Proverb Fool me once, shame on you! Fool me twice, shame on me!

    My Journey

Good evening, I am currently waiting to hear from the surgeon’s office to see if I have been approved. I am 37 years old, 5’7” and starting weight 234.9 (BMI 36.8) currently 228.4 (BMI 35.8). I started the 90-day Aetna multi-disciplinary program in January. The surgeon is using my back as a co-morbidity (degenerative disc disease, lumbago, SI joint tenderness, severe spondylosis, annular tears, neural foraminal narrowing, facet arthropathy, muscle spasms, sciatica and chronic pain) as I am a healthy fat person. I met with my pcp and nutritionist every month, personal trainer every 2 weeks and weight loss counselor every week. My family has been so patient with myself and my pain. This is the second time I have tried to have WLS, if I am denied again I hope to be accepted with the bariatric pal MX with Dr. Illan.

    Gall Bladder

My surgeon said that only about 20% of people undergoing bariatric surgery will have gall bladder problems requiring removal.
  13. Thank you for responding. I will try these ideas. I want to be able to give and get everything I can with Bariatric Pal. Thanks again🤪😁

    Medicare?

Medicare auto approves you if you meet all of the requirements. The requirements can be found in document NCD 100.1 which is a National Coverage Determination. You can find it at the following link: https://www.cms.gov/medicare-coverage-database/details/ncd-details.aspx?NCDid=57&KeyWord=bariatric+surgery&KeyWordLookUp=Title&KeyWordSearchType=And& CMS NCD on bariatric surgery
  15. Over and Out

    Crohns patient requirements

That's interesting to know, thanks for posting. My friend has always had trouble keeping weight on, so I guess I just assumed that was part of the Crohn's. Never would have thought of bariatric surgery as a possible treatment, but it does make sense the way you explain it.
  16. Over and Out

    Crohns patient requirements

An EGD is a standard part of my bariatric program's plan, to be performed within 30 days of surgery. I'm not sure how that compares to an upper GI, but they are looking at the same stuff. I'm curious as to how you feel a gastric sleeve will help your Crohn's? (I have a friend who suffers from Crohn's and it seems like she gets little to no relief with whatever she tries.)

    Good and Bad

My cardiology consult-loved the doctor-plan to make her my permanent one. That said mine was much more intensive. I am an only child, mother died of congestive heart failure, father of a postrior wall infarct, in lay terms massive heart attack, back wall of his heart already weakened by prior heart attack, the last heart attack the back wall of his heart exploded, he bled to death in a minute or so. My older son, my middle child, died at 31 of an asending aortic aneurysm and dissection, when it ruptured also dead within a minute of so, when autopsy was performed his chest cavity was full of blood. See why,i had more intensive than average. I had already nuclear stress test, cardiac catheterization which isn't as bad as one might think. Super nice, super gentle, super skilled cardiologist. Add along with EKGs , abdominal and thoracic scans. Happy to say I passed very well, only abnormality I have is a slightly dialated aortic root. High normal range but still fit for surgery. Would not be surprised if there is a cardiologist present anyway in operating theatre. Okay this may be boring but,let me finish, Marfan's syndrome which my son had indications of has dominate inheritance. One parent has it in their grnes, even if the other does not you get it. Although I was diagnosed with very mild EhlersDanlos characteristics neither my late husband or I had Marfan's. I can explain by likening it to a jury trial, you can have a conviction, a decree of innocence, or a hung jury where there isn't enough evidence to render convction. Every attribute of Marfan either my husband or I showed. Yes neither had them all, so official thought there maybe a subgroup called marfanoid, recessive genes from both parents made up this child. OK one of the facets, an enlarged aortic root which is the bottom section of that artery coming out of heart. So obviously son's. was passed down from me. I could go down the list but hindsight being 20-20 we (my doctors and I) can put it all together. Now you've all had a mini course on Bariatric Pal. I am extremely lucky all facets of my own health at 72 are still good enough for surgery and I'm going forth H*** or HIGH Water towards my goal, and if there is truly a Heaven as I was always taught ,my Angel Son will be watching, giving me a thumbs up and smiling so much. He loved me as much as I loved him and after 10 years i so miss him still!😲

And hot on the trail of my BBF Bariatric Bud Forever @ proud grammy, I'll offer my friendship also. I have only been on BP 5 months, but they have been wonderful ones. I have learned so much from Kathy and all the other veterans on here. Decided to say Hi,because we might have a few overlapping items. I am pre surg but post classes and requirements, this puts me in an uncomfortable Weight loss position, 1st program, nicest thing I can say, we no longer fit each others plans. My somewhat rueful joke- it was a case of sickness, I made them sick. it's a lot longer story, don't worry , what happened to me was pretty darn rate. You will not have it. At any rate I am now in a new program, better and better for,my in the long run. Surgery could be,May, surely early summer. I will have a RnY bypass, better for,me, I have pretty bad GERD, bypass fixes , sleeve does not. I am 72 years old, yes old enough to be everybody's mamma if not grandma, I stand 5ft8in tall, 323 lbs, srawberry blond verging on red hair, still naural, never greyed, at this point it probably never will.Widowed 6 years, 3 children,2 living, younger son still lives with me, he wants to be with me as much as I want him there. Like everyone you will meet on this website, I'm in it to win it. No fears whatsoever of surgery, more scary to continue to live as I have than step forward into a surgical future. All thus old cowgirl can get the blues I am usually pretty upbeat about life. Life is full of ironies but I intend to,love mine and live mine to the best or,my abilities. Join me on this journey for the best is yet to be😛 "Leading others to happiness is the greatest Triumph"

    Any MAY sleevers???

As I told someone yesterday I tried my 1st Premier Protein yesterday. I had put a few packs on my in-game shelf, until someone tells me different, early May in my mind. Anyway,i slept,in yesterday morning, okay I confess, I had been up,too late reading and, posting on Bariatric Pal. Had a doctors appointment, with PCP, no,time for brekky so I grabbed a Peachs and Cream. Not bad ,not bad at all. Avery fait evaporated milk aftertaste. I think I could stand to drink these, but ask me again when I'm on them post surgery.Another thing worth a small chuckle-- right on the side of the Little milkcarton type container "not for use in weight reduction" who do they think they are fooling? At $7,27 a 4 pack who would be drinking, this besides us, maybevrinners and other atheletes? Soda is cheaper as well as a,milkshake at our old nemesis Mickey D. 😛

    Just starting the process??

Super Lucky! My Insurance only allows Bariatric Surgery through 1 Program and it’s a hour drive from my house. I have to wait 2-3 weeks just to get a appointment for the Initial consultation
  21. If all else fails go to Ken S our Webmaster; that man has probably been born knowing around the Web better than anyone I know. I am electronically inept and he has made my days on Bariatric Pal so much smoother, I'd give him 5 stars if I could!😛
  22. When I first signed in back in Aug 2017, I don’t know how or where I even signed in at. Bariatric Pal has been a wealth of information and inspiration for me. I had my sleeve done in Dec 2017. I don’t remember putting any numbers of weight or anything else in. I don’t even know where to find my profile or how. I do not have access to a computer, just my iPad and cell. Can some one explain how to find this in KINDERGARTEN term. I’d really appreciate the help. 🤪THANKS, PEGGY OR PACS[emoji2]
  23. Met with surgeon two days ago. Treated poorly (and that’s putting it mildly) so I walked out never to return. He is the only surgeon for Bariatric at this hospital so I’m going elsewhere. I’m fine with getting the sleeve, just not with him and his program.
  24. Day 19 Post Op, feeling better , losing weight everyday about 1-2 lbs a day it varies sometimes only 1 pound a day. im down about 35 lbs so far I went to my soft foods class yesterday! Yay! I will be able to start eating softer foods but honestly i have no appetite at all. I am trying to get my protein as much as I can and stay hydrated as well. my tummy is still tender but no pain really. I am taking it easy. My surgeon says I am not cleared to do any long road trips yet. boo! But I am now starting my bariatric vitamins. Got all those yesterday too. got some protein wafers too. yum. Anyone on soft food stage? and if you are , what are you eating?
  25. Sleeved at KC Bariatric in November, best program ever!
