  3. So I have been doing Protein non stop and it's worked out great. I am down 62 pounds. But now I am facing taking a laxative every 3 days to have a bowel movement. Does anyone have any recommendation for Fiber that won't throw off my weight loss? Thank you

2 pounds and I will be overweight!

congrats!!! When i got to a BMI of about 28 my surgeon told me I had lost enough to gain the health benefits of massive weight loss. I look and feel best when I am in the 24/25 range of BMI because i have a muscular and substantial build... if i get smaller I just look bony. I suspect that you won't want to be under 154, that seems really light for a full grown man! Anyway, you are doing awesome - hope you are really enjoying it!
  5. I had surgery with Dr Nick but at Baylor Plano (great hospital): 1. 2-days due to horrible nausea but I was aware that could happen. I was given Lovanox, Phengran and Ativan. The Ativan is what actually quailed the nausea. Dr. Nick visited with me before and after surgery. 2. My mother was with me so she kept all my personal items but the hospital provides lockers. 3. Yes I had a drain and an On Q-pump (medicine that goes into incision site). Both were removed prior to me being discharged. 4. You will be prescribed liquid Loratab & an PPI. Overall I had a great experience with Dr. Nick. The first few days are rough but stay focused on your goals and you will get through it. I had little to no pain pain after the 11th day. Walk as much as you can as soon as you can, trust me it helps tremendously. I have lost 45lbs and tons of inches (have not updated ticker) since 1-23-12 day of my surgery. I workout 5-6 days a week for at least an hour. If the scale rules you put it away, I weigh daily for my own accountability. You will stall but don't get discouraged stay the course and the weight will come off. You have the best surgeon in the DFW area (my opinion)! Good luck to you and enjoy the ride. It is by far the BEST thing I ever did. Katenna

    What Y'all Think: IX

@@1Cor2:9 I wonder if it is more to do with a boost of confidence after losing weight then it is your actual size/weight making you more attractive (and leading to marriage).

I may need to cheat my bloodwork -_-

BMI is based on height and weight. So many people are hung up on their height? Make sure your height is accurate. Even if you were 1/2 in. shorter your BMI would be higher and you may qualify? I like to say I'm 5' 6" but I'm really 5' 5.5"

    Spring break is over...

March 23, 2009 191.8 Spring break is indeed over. My...how time flies! Yesterday at church, a lady who was probably twice my age, testified that she finally realized the secret to weight loss -- DISCIPLINE!!! She stated that she was now focused on being more disciplined and less reliant on a quick fix. As I sat and listened to her testimony, I silently prayed that I would not struggle with weight loss for the rest of my life. I want to be disciplined and focused. I want my outside to manifest what I feel on the inside. So as I prepare to return to work after a week long break, I have to remember to be disciplined. 1. Drink more water. 2. No eating out!!! I will continue to lose weight and feel healthier if I remain disciplined.

Back. been off the board for a while.....

Wow Brenda, you are definately on the right track now. Okay, don't kick yourself too hard. You have been through slippage and re-banding, and only gained 10 lbs?!!! I know it's hard to be discouraged by a weight gain, but you will lose that 10 plus some so easily! Especailly with a good exercise kickstart. You go girl! Hope on that treadmill! Join the May Walking challenge! Lace up those sneaky peeks (what my daughter calls sneakers) and get ta movin! So glad you checked in, we miss you! Don't stay gone for long...
  10. What you are feeling is normal. The time between your surgery and being filled is for healing, not dieting. Most lose litte to no weight during this time, or even gain. Once your swelling goes down from your surgery, you are pretty much wide open like you were prior to getting the band. Just be patient, once you get your fills and reach proper restriction, the weight will come off.

What kind of eater are you?

Well, at least they didn't use the standard line about band patients potentially becoming milkshake addicts. Bright, you might find some comfort in this Australian study, which says that there is no evidence that sweet eaters are less successful with the band. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=12568183&dopt=Abstract "CONCLUSION: Sweet eaters do not have less favorable weight outcomes following Lap-Band surgery. Our study confirms the findings of two other major studies. Sweet eating behavior should not be used as a preoperative selection criterion for bariatric surgery." A couple of other thoughts. Before I got my band, I thought about food a LOT. While eating lunch, I would think about dinner. I could eat dinner, and feel hungry enough to have a snack or sometimes another plate full of food before bed. Miracle of all miracles, I no longer do that. My 2nd fill reduced my appetite so greatly that the food thoughts just went *poof*. My husband will even ask me "Have you eaten enough today?" My relationship with food is so far removed from what it was before, I am still quite amazed by it. Tonia

    Surgery in 2 days!!!

Good luck to you, Michelle! I'm going in tomorrow (Monday) too. I too gained a few pounds between making the decision and going on the pre-op diet. I think that is pretty standard, as most of us do the "goodbye to favourites" thing. I've been on a pre-op for 9 days and so far have lost 9lb! Whoohoo!

Help!!!! 1.5 year after lap band

Hi Maxxim, I've also had a similar experience with my band. I was banded in February of 2009. Things were going great and I was losing alot of weight. I was able to eat solid proteins but not things like bread or chips. Around June of 2010, I started noticing that I would get acid reflux at night. It was miserable and very painful. I also started to get sick frequently due to eating too much and trying to eat around the band. I was still happy though because I was losing so much weight. Eventually in August of 2010, I noticed I could only eat mushies and soups and then eventually just liquids. Again, it wasn't fun but I was losing weight so I was happy. One day in mid August, water and hot tea would not even go down. I tried every liquid but nothing worked. I would develop a mucus plug and would have to purge to get some relief. I finally decided to go see my lap band doctor. I was self pay so I was very worried. They did a barium swallow and saw that nothing was going through. I was told that my pouch was very inflammed and the band had almost slipped. My docotor was very worried and now, so was I. He had to completely unfill the band to give the pouch time to heal. It healed rather quickly and now I feel so much better. I can't think of any incidents where I was horribly sick or vomited alot. It just seemed to get worse and worse. Anyway, I feel so much better now. I really didn't want to see the doctor since I was losing so much weight but I feel so much better now. I tried to just stay on liquids to see if that helped, but it didn't. My advice would be to see your doctor as soon as you can before you do perminent damage. I was so close to having damage since I waited. Once the pouch healed, I was able to be refilled and I am back on track. Hope this helps!
  14. I agree you need to switch Drs! The patient/doctor relationship is critical to weight loss! And trust is the key! You may end up having to go to more than one to find the one that makes you ultimately the most comfortable and give YOU the support you need! You are not getting it with your surgeon so look elsewhere! Best of luck to you! I know you can do it! Tkl
  15. Hello all, I was banded 9/15/09. To keep a potentially long post short and to the point - Things were great at first. I was motivated, losing weight, following protocol. I lost about 50 pounds or so in the first 4-5 months. Fast forward to now - Weight loss has completely stopped at roughly 65 pounds. I work out like a fiend, I'm active in martial arts, and my band is filled pretty much to it's max (at least it was). I feel like I can eat almost as much as before my surgery now. All day long I think about how I want to rip this thing out of me because it does nothing but make me feel weird on occasion, and once or twice a week I need to puke something up because it's stuck. I am worried to death that my pouch is all stretched out or something. Sometimes, I still get full quickly (especially when I follow the rule and do not drink while I eat). Other times, I can eat just as much as everyone else around me and I get concerned. All in all, any success I have now I feel like it should be credited towards my exercise, not the lap band. I lost my health insurance about a year ago and stopped going in for checkups. I simply can't afford to eat the cost of an upper GI. If I were still able to be full after a tiny portion of food I would roll with the lap band thing, feeling like I made the right decision getting it done. I suppose what I am concerned about is the fact that I feel like I can eat too much. Since I can't go get it checked on I came here for some words of wisdom and/or support. Does anyone else feel like something is wrong when they can eat too much, so long after their surgery with a supremely tight fill? Or, should i walk around feeling like my pouch is stretched?

    First fill in 2 yrs

I feel your pain. I had my surgery in 2010 ,lost 49 lbs and put back on 18 of them. I've not been able to take the weight off on my own and will be calling the office on Monday to schedule an appointment to start over. I fell off the bandwagon lost my way and became totally uncomitted to the process because I wanted have my cake and eat it too! I did not go in for follow-up fills and as a result starting gaining. Thank God for second and third and fourth chances. This is such a journey and I realize I cannot compare myself to anyone else, hence discouragement and the cycle begins again. My weight is due to my emotional eating. Trying to get a grip! I encourage you to hang in there and do the work. I jumping back in the saddle again.
  18. I guess the nerves are normal for most people. I was afraid I would die in surgery if anything. But just having the band won't necessarily make you lose weight all on it's own. You will have to work it by eating properly. I believe most people do well with the band. But some don't........

    sleeved 2/28/13 @188 anyone else?

That's still 20 pounds! And it's not coming back... I am currently at your pre weight. (Surgery tomorrow) and I think of all the times I've lost weight before and how good I felt and of course inevitably, how defeated I felt as the pounds crept back on.... Those numbers on that scale and in your closet are just going to keep getting smaller and smaller! Be proud. If your doctor complains about that, poke him in the eye!

    "C" you later

I always had a big chest, even at 110 in my teen years. I had a reduction in 2002 after my twins were born. Now when I lose weight, I have nothing left so I am slowly watching them deflate! I am back to a comfortable C but I know by the time the next 40 pounds fall off I will be in a B cup and that is something I have not seen since my early teens during the training bra era which did not last too long! Can I take part of my backside and move it on up to the top, just for some firmness? Lord knows I am not lacking in that area!!!

    Oh my, so angry!

I think we look at it as a tool to help us, where those that are not considering WLS surgery just believe that we will eat smaller amounts of whatever we want and everything will be fine. They have no concept of what actually happens. As soon as I am healed from this surgery, I will be having a very serious hip revision surgery. So serious, that my surgeon and his partner cancelled it the day of surgery saying that it needs to be done in a larger hospital with full access to all types of equipment. I had an appointment with the new ortho doc on 1/8 but as my RNY is now 1/4, I rescheduled for 3/1 to schedule the hip revision. I am hoping whatever weight I have lost by the time of that surgery will make it easier on me and the docs. Any surgery is complicated by obesity and I am doing this for my health, not my looks. I am 60-years-old and that simply does not matter anymore! People can say the darndest things, but we KNOW what we are really undertaking. Being thankful for RNYTalk and Obesityhelp for my only outside support! Blessings! Lynn

    Oh my, so angry!

You bring up a good point. I had mentioned earlier that one of my best girlfriends just did not understand me getting weight loss surgery. Well she was really happy when I quit smoking and didn't care that I used a pill to help me do it...as long as I quit smoking. I think that when it comes to weigh it's the unknown on how to deal with it. I think there are some that want you to be the way you are now and not change. Over the weekend I went to a friend's birthday party. Her husband and I went to Jr High and High School together. He has seen me overweight all my life but has never treated me any differently. So we were talking and he just flat out said that I am going to look hot! We had a good laugh about it and talked about our 20 year high school reunion (which I totally forgot about) in a few years and that I'm gonna shock the shit out of everyone. Sorry for the language but I have to tell it like he said it because it's amazing. I am starting to remember and think about all the positive remarks and throw away all the negative remarks. This is going to be a struggle and I am glad that those that support me fully are there to pick me up.
  23. Ann, your choices for a decent surgeons are Riverside, Orange County and Beverly Hills. I went to Cedars-Sinai and had the best care I've ever had in my life. The drive is horrendous and it requires eight to ten trips. I have a ranch, not too far from you and I did a lot of research before deciding, my doctor's recommendation made up my mind. I don't have any idea what Tricare might do for you, but please find the best surgeon and hospital you can. Not all weight loss facilities are equal so choose wisely. I know I sound preachy, but I hate to see young people get less than the best care possible. If I can be of any possible help, feel free to PM me, and the very best of luck to you.

    Working together

Hello fellow Lapband bloggers! I'm courtney, and im 16! Me and my mother are going to be banded. I dont know when becuase we just started the process. We have our consultation on July 1st. I have never been thin, ive always been overweight, when i was 11, 12 i thought 'oh this is just baby weight it will come off. Ha, i was wrong it stayed with me. Ive tried numerous diet plans, yeah i lost but gained it all back plus some, i'm just depressed! Thank god i thought of the lapband procedure! I am just so happy that me and my mother can expirience this life changing thing together, and start our journey of healthy eating and weight loss! I just want to thank god, without him im a total reck! :rolleyes2:
  25. Hi Pammy! Kaiser does indeed cover the Lapband if you meet the criteria (BMI 40 or over, and pattern of unsuccesful attempts to lose weight and keep it off) (or BMI over 35 and 2 co-morbidities). They have their own surgeons and each center that does the surgery has their own rules. I started the process by emailing my PCP and telling him that I had been doing a lot of research and this is what I wanted, he emailed me back to make an appointment and come see him, meantwhile I signed up for the Healthy Lifestyle classes, when I went in a couple of days later my BMI was well over 40, my blood pressure was uncontrolled enough for him to put me on a second medication, he saw that I was in the class and he sent a referral over for me. BUT. I understand from my Kaiser support group that each bariatric center is different, and that some may still want you to complete classes before they will accept you into the program. In Reseda for example you need a 6-month class to be referred for orientation. There is a program in Harbor City and they are just starting one in West LA, I don't know where the other SoCal ones are. Most Kaiser paitents have to drive an hour or more to the surgery centers I think. I know I do! Go to kp.org and search by the facility . . . . for my program (Richmond), the is a whole information binder available online that tells EVERYthing about the steps in the process. Good luck! :tongue2: Riley
