Anyone else lose a friend or friends when they opted to get healthier?
untfluter replied to irishstorm831's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Interestingly enough... I have a friend who had GB several years ago... she did very well, but when I saw her a year ago, she had gained a little back, but still looked amazing... This time last year I was in Chicago visiting her for my birthday... at that time, I had no plans at all to have WLS.... when I made the decision... I spoke w/her in like March of this year... she questioned my choice of surgeon, she thought her surgeon was the ONLY one to use and questioned my choice of LB instead of GB. Since that conversation, she has not answered her phone when I call, returned my voicemails, emails or texts.... I find this very sad and very confusing. You would think that her having gone thru WLS and been successful, you would think that she would be supportive and not forgotten about our friendship... it really sucks to lose a friendship you cherised over something like this... -
IT'S OFFICIAL: I am at the lower half of the 200's!

Thanks everybody! You are so kind!! I just like to share the good news because I am so excited to have gotten my band. It's one of the best things I have ever done for myself. Working on becoming healthy has brought out more than just health. I also have become much more outgoing. In fact I have been doing lots of training at work. I work for Cal-Fire and this summer I will be called out to some major fires to help with payment processing for the firefighters. It will be pretty damanding, and I know it's not something I would have been able to pull off had I still been at my largest. I have in total since my heaviest weight lost 80 lbs. That is a lot of weight to carry around, especially now that I see I have about 99 more to lose. I often wonder how I was able to do that and why it took me so long to come out of that fog of denial. I think the fact I was diagnosed with hypertension really woke me up because we've had a family tragedy with it. I've seen that it is very dangerous and it CAN kill you... Anyway, stay strong VV's. We are all in this together. Take care! -
They had to up my calorie intake Bc I stopped losing weight. So, as long as you're still losing you should be good!

congrats!!! That is so awesome & exciting. My goal is to lose 60 pounds within 6 months. Around 10 a month! Did you exercise a lot also? Or mainly just changed your eating habits? I'll be banded August 18th, almost 3 weeks. I am so so so excited. I think about "what if i gain it all back after I lose it" too! But, I feel good about it, and I think I'll feel REALLY good about it once I actually do lose my weight! But, we're going to have the band forever, not just for 6 months ya know? If I start gaining any weight back, or eating poorly, etc. then I'm going to make an appointment to go see the surgeon & dietician! I think you should do the same! And, just like dionna113 said, if you stay at the "sweet spot" you should be full all of the time, etc! well congrats! that is just awesome! i can't wait to be there!!!

whats more important counting calories or getting in the protein?
andielmt posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
i am struggling a little, i am trying to keep my calorie intake no more than 1500 calories per my nutritionist but sometimes i find that my protein intake is lower than its supposed to be. somedays when i eat more protein my calories are higher. if i go back to the basics and eat more chicken, eggs, tuna, etc maybe this will keep my calories down. i go in to the surgeon on tues and havent lost any weight now for 4 months. the last time i went in she seemed very disappointed in me. i would get another fill but she said i was tight last time only at 1.5cc in a 4cc band. i have to say that in the past week ive been getting full quicker and not thinking about food as much. i just started using myfitnesspal.com to keep track of my calorie intake, it also keeps track of your protein also andrea -
Well I'm on solid foods now - but even when I was on mushy food - I tried to keep my calories on track. I orginally was at less then 1,000 calories but then I read many posts and thought maybe I was in starvation mode and that's why my body wasn't letting loose of the weight. What calorie intake do you think I should be at?

You are doing great. Get the dieting mentality out of you. You will not gain it back with good and balanced restriction and nutrition. You are doing great. Congrats.

I've been told that so long as you keep the band in the "sweet spot" you don't gain back what you've lost. So don't worry, enjoy! Give away those clothes that were too big and never look back!

PS: I remember attending a Weight Watchers class a long time ago and woman there hit a plateau for weeks. I clearly remember the leader saying to her "instead of eating a half banana eat the whole thing", Instead of 1 tablespoon of peanut butter, 2 tablespoons.. she was refereing to 'uping' her fat intake. Sure enough the next week at her weigh in, she lost 5 lbs! Moral is we have to play around too see what works for us in order to jumpstart our bodies function...

Congrats Gentry, Yeah, the only pain I had was port pain too. I never had any on the shoulder pain and I'm proud too. My doctor gave me 5 big bottles of the liquid loritab with a refill of 5 and I used about 1/2 of one and went back to the pills. I take the loritab 10's if I need one and break it in half. I couldn't choke down that liquid. yuckkkkkkk Sip don't take large drinks that was my biggest deal breaker. I would be thirsty and use to drinking big drinks and would forget. I think the walking saved my life. I walked and walked and at day 4 was vacuming, sweeping, laundry, dishes, everything and at day 12 was out riding 4wheelers and just very active. I think the walking is the key. Good luck and you'll be losing like crazy. The liquids were hard for me but enjoy them because now that I can eat the weight loss has slowed down.

So I have been in the stall from hell. I started birth contol pill about 3 weeks ago I put on 4 pound without changing my diet one bit. So I stopped taking the pill at week 2 as I was just bloating and got headaches the whole time. So I have been off the pill for 8 days now and my weight has not budged. I read to up my calories to trick my body so I started keeping track on myfatscecret.com and found if I was lucky I was getting about 500 calories a day. I started looking for healty ways so add some more calories, so far that has been adding a protein shake in my day and adding an afternoon snack of cheese and lunch meat. I have to admit It is a lot of work to get in the amount of food that I do, the snacks are really really hard to fit in. I am just plain full. One would think on so little calories I would be dropping the weight right and left. So I need some tip on breaking the stall and ways to get in healthy snacks.

Going to Mexico. What should I take?
mbanja replied to wannabthin's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Unless you plan on going out, don't pack too many clothes. I took the clothes I wore down there, a night gown, and clothes for the trip back. Take some reading material, and can we say it enough....Gas-x. Also, if you are going to go with the carry-on bag make sure you take one with rollers or a back pack that spreads the weight on both shoulders. I took a one handle duffle bag and I was regretting in on the way back. Due to gas pain, (which mine was bad because I chose to sleep instead of walk right after surgery) it hurt to carry it on one shoulder. Hey I have an 8month old and figured I would trade the gas pain for several good hours of uninterrupted SLEEP. Hey I don't regret it at all, it was heaven. GOOD LUCK! -
You know at one time I weighed 408 pounds went to la weightloss for 8 months and lost to 343 now I am back to 383. The doctor told me I needed to lose weight. My joints are getting bad due to weight loss and I have sleep apnea and borderline diabetes. I truely don't see my health getting better, in fact it is getting worse. It really all depends how long you are willing to live with your issues that deal with how much overweight you are. Me I am taking a leap of faith and making a step on a path that I don't know. A healthy path for my life!!!

Hello all, Just found this forum yesterday. I'm looking forward to reading, learning and joining in. I had my lap band done on 24th of July 2007, in Idaho. I'm never hungry and its wonderful and I've NEVER been filled.........yet! I have lost 61lbs and have 25lbs to go to get to my ideal weight. I am very nervous though about being able to maintain my weight, but I'll worry about that when I get there. :tt1:

Just had my 3 month surgiversary on Tuesday and this morning hit 50 lbs. down from Surgery day, and 94 lbs down total - which marks my half-way point to my goal weight of 130 This has happened faster than I thought it would and I am grateful that that I feel so much better. I even took a change and ordered some pants that are large - rather than than 1X I had been wearing, as my pants have gotten so big that I have tripped over them (still wearing my giant 3X shirts though - I think it will take a long time until the big tummy is gone enough that I feel comfortable wearing tighter stuff on top.) I have my 100 day post op appt next week and am pretty excited to go thanks to everyone on this board for sharing their ups and downs, it is great to know folks going through the same experiences.

Going crazy. I just want to eat. I know I know. It's in my head. It's not that I'm craving junk or anything. Literally. Just want to eat. Especially meat. This is very hard. It's such a mental game. Those who are a month or so out... How are you doing now that you can have solids?? I just can't stop thinking about eating. It's sad. But very real. Surgery day weight 264.5 Current weight 250.5 Yes exciting and very awesome. But lordddddd. I would love some chicken. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Question about fitness challenges
Fiddleman replied to BlessedBeyondMeasure2012's topic in Fitness & Exercise
Try starting out with 10 air squats. Focus on going parallel or lower. You will not get the benefits of a squat if you do not get at least parallel. You should feel the resistance in your gluts, hamstrings. I found these challenging at first because I am a stiff board. Just starting to get flexible. They key to a good squat is find the mobility in your hips, being able to push them back and also being able to rotate your ankles. Rotating your ankles 30% or so is key while still remaining flat footed, but is hard. Keep your weight in your heals. Always think about a straight line from the top of your head, down to the ground between your shoulders and your feet. Keep your shoulders relaxed and aligned above your hips. Strong core. Knees should bend out slightly when you deepen. That is where the real power will come from. Do not let your knees buckle. Feet should be rotated out a little, but not too much. Your knees should track your feet. Keep your back straight or just slightly inverted at the lumbar. Flat is key. You will get hurt if you have an outward bend in your back, especially if you add weight. So much to keep track of. Trust me. I have been working on squat variations with and without weight for 8 months and it is still a conscious effort to keep good form. -
So I am pretty excited that I got my consultation date for April 28th at the Brigham with Dr. Robinson. I am very nervous though, of course. My best friend came with me and took work off to come with me to my consultation appointment. I LOVE her support. I m very healthy besides my weight. No high BP or cholesterol, etc. I did have 2 knee surgeries 5 years ago which never healed perfectly because of all my weight so I could not work out and strengthen my muscles. So there really is not any reason for them to say I am not a good candidate. I am at 245.8 lbs (my highest EVER) and am 5'5" so my BMI is 40.8. I am crossing my fingers and hoping that this all works out for me. I am so excited for this journey to start. I think my nervousness may stem from my excitement but there is not anything I can do except wait for the appointment. I'm going to have to call my PCP and make sure they send my referral because I don't want to show up and them say "Oh we didn't get it" [yikes] If anyone has had Dr. Malcolm Robinson at Brigham and Womens in Boston, Ma let me know how your consult went and any words of advice. Good luck & congrats to all. You all deserve it!

Yes it really works, not quite as fast as you may like but it is consistent. When you are full, you ARE full. I am happy to lose a bit slower so that my skin is not all sagging, and my co workers think i am just being successful on another diet for once! I haven't exercized at all YET(but am planning to start), and i am still losing. I cheated by eating halloween candy but did not gain which is a miracle itself. I love my band!

Hurtful family member (off topic)
RJ'S/beginning replied to Ree's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
She is who she is. this is not off topic because it is affecting you and your progress. While we love those in our lives we reach a point that we are no longer going to take this kind of abuse anymore. This girl needs help not you. Somewhere a long the lines she has felt that she comes first in all things. You really need to not give her that power anymore and ride it out. Everyone has that kind of person somewhere in their lives...My mother a few weeks ago decided that it was no longer a good idea for me to ever call her again. she did this because of a minor choice I made and she took it as personal...Fine...I am done. I have reached my limit of abuse. I know that she is incapable of love and so there fore I expect nothing from her.. You will have to come to grips with the same conclusion. And realize that love has nothing to do with this. It is not you or her grandmother this is her. She must change and you must keep going... Your weight loss will stall if you don't eat...please look after yourself no matter how painful this is....The grandmother needs your love...Since you have some time to spare now...Give her the extra time and attention and work to figure out how to deal with this....Don't expect her to see it your way.....You have to live around it or plow right through it...... -
Not telling family about surgery?
readytolive replied to Band Be Gone's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Congratulations for losing weight! People find it so easy to judge but until you have walked around for years with a bunch of extra weight, trying everything else to get if off.. they don't have a right to judge. I will be thrilled in a one piece swim suit but curious, what are the scars like? My husband had six little scars after lap band but they are pretty much invisible now... 4 years later. -
Not telling family about surgery?
Lakelady replied to Band Be Gone's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I've only told my husband and one friend who recently had WLS. I didn't tell people because I didn't want to justify surgery at such a "low" BMI. I get lots of attention for all the weight lost but I try to avoid talking about it. My friends went from irritated that I wouldn't eat the type and volume of food that I used to with them (social eater here!) to actually being really excited for me when the weight came off. Nobody really notices how very very small my portions are because I don't call attention to it. I know I "should" tell people but I don't want to. No two piece swimming suits for me because of the scars. -
I always hear everyone say their feet get smaller when they lose weight, well I started out at 280, and now down to 248, still the same shoe size and not even a bit looser! I am trying to wear those cute small shoes, but I just cant, I think im gonna have fat feet forever!:cool2:
