I agree with @GradyCat. There's not a lot of research that you can "stretch" your pouch. Don't do one of those "pouch resets" where you just drink liquids. Just focus on lean protein and veggies, get in your fluids and vitamins, and avoid added sugar. The weight will come off. Try connecting with a dietician/nutritionist for help tailored to your situation.

    My Face Is Broken!

Last time I lost a lot of weight I got a bit of grief when I came back into the US from Colombia. I have updated my passport since then, but it was again at a higher weight. It's new, but at a higher weight. I didn't have any issues coming back from Mexico a month ago, but I also have Global Entry now, so maybe that helped?

    Determining Goal Weight

Wow CATWOMAN, everything you do for exercise are things I love to do (or used to love to do) as well. That is so encouraging for me because it feels “doable” for me too. I was worried that significant weight loss would require heavy, sweaty workouts, which I just cannot do anymore at my age (54) due to joint pain and fatigue. The calorie thing seems to vary person to person, like you said.

It's highly unlikely that you've stretched your pouch. You can get back to basics and the weight will come off again. I know because I've done it. I gained 25 pounds in 2020/2021 and just lost it. It's never too late.

Am I beyond the point of no return?

You are never too far gone. ❤️ There is a lot going on in your world and several factors at play. First of all, remember that some amount of regain is pretty normal. Most WLS patients do not stay at their lowest weight for long, so that may just be where your body has settled. Have you had labs done recently? Burning Mouth Syndrome is sometimes linked with nutritional deficiencies, which WLS patients are at increased risk for, so there may be some overlap there. Stick to the foods you can comfortably and safely eat, while focusing on protein and fluids as much as possible. Try and work in some movement when you can. Recruit help if you can. And prioritize your own health & wellness. You are the only YOU your family has and you deserve health & happiness.

I had VGS in March 2019. I was doing good but then got severely under weight. I have since done the exact opposite and about 30 pounds over weight. I’m terrified that I have stretched my pouch and that I’m never going to get the weight back off.

    Determining Goal Weight

I do exercise - I'm not a gym rat, but I always tried to exercise 5-6 days a week. At first it was mostly walking and water aerobics, since I was too heavy to do much of anything else. I still do those - but I also now do Zumba and bicycling as well. I've also strength-trained off and on (twice a week) - but unfortunately not consistently because I don't really like it. But I recently started using resistance bands, which I like a lot more than the weight machines at my gym - so hopefully I'll keep up with it this time! as for calories, by the end of the first year, I was up around 1000 per day. Second year I was eating around 1200 until I hit maintenance at 20 months out. I then experimented with different ranges to determine my "maintenance range", which is 1500-1700 per day. As long as I stay within that range, I can maintain my weight. But of course that's going to vary for everyone depending on how much muscle you have, how active you are, etc. I know some women who have to eat around 1200 to maintain, and others who can eat 2000....

    Everything

I lost 100% of my excess weight, over 200 lbs. And yes - I had a lot of excess skin. Plastic surgery is the only thing that could helped with it, so I went with that. I had a lower body lift, arm lift, face lift, and breast lift. I didn't want a breast augmentation - I was "well-endowed" most of my life, and I was tired of it. I wanted to be a B or C cup, which I am now. I was already post-menopause when I had surgery, so birth control wasn't an issue for me.

    Determining Goal Weight

The only person who can decide your goal weight is you. Others can suggest a reasonable or practical number, but it's ultimately up to you.
  12. I had a two-day athletic seminar this weekend with a bunch of people I've never met. We were asked to tell our story, so I told my story about struggling with weight loss, getting WLS, and trying to maintain strength through the weight loss. Afterwards a few of the participants said, "I would never have guessed you were heavy before. You could never tell now." Like a (refreshing) splash of cold water because I of course remember myself as the fat kid.

    A stall already?

I stalled every second week for the first two months, and the stalls sometimes lasted two weeks. then I'd get one week of weight loss before the next stall. That you made it a whole ten weeks before a stall is really impressive! As others have said - you just have to ride it out while sticking to the program. There's no one rule for how long stalls last, they just last as long as your body needs them to. They're frustrating and boring, but they do break.

Wow! Your everything sure has a lot of stuff in it! JK those are all legitimate questions & things we all worry about pre-op. Some things to take into consideration is your starting weight & your age. The more you have to loose, the more excess skin you will have. If you are older, it might be harder for you to tone things up. The main thing is finding an exercise thing you can stick with! For me that has been Pilates. But even after doing Pilates 369 times I still have bat wings. I have always had a “poofy” stomach no matter how much I weigh, even at 100 pounds in my early 20’s. I would love to have a tummy tuck, but someone would have to die for that to happen so I will go without one. My daughter has that implant thing in her arm. She had a bypass just over 3 years ago (when she was 22) & has lost over 150. She has done great. I had a bypass to correct a failed surgery I had 12 years prior to control GERD that had failed. Because of this I have to take a Previcid for the rest of my life. As long as I don’t over eat (more then 3oz) & I don’t have spicy food the GERD stays under control. Today we ate lunch at a new place. But my husband & I both got heartburn! So we won’t be eating there again!

9 months post op, weight loss stopped :(

Hi there I’m exactly where you are I’ve been in a 3 month stall from months 6-9 and haven’t lost a single pound although I am about 12 lbs from where my goal was. This is however frustrating as I am eating under 1000 calories exercising 60 minutes daily by walking… the only thing I’ve slowed down on is my water intake which is about 42 oz a day. I’m wondering if this is the reason my weight has stalled…or perhaps it’s due to my exercise since I’m only walking but I do average 3 miles a day. They do say the closer you get to your goal it can literally stop…but this is a very frustrating feeling to have especially since my surgeon said after the one year point the weight loss generally stops….

    Determining Goal Weight

Aah the debate over BMIs. Think of them as a guide only. There are too many other factors that influence your weight & what is healthy for you. If you carry a lot of muscle you will weigh more & will have a higher BMI. You may have a small frame & so a lower BMI may be more appropriate. Neither means you’re not at healthy weight for you. So who can really say what’s perfect or not. At the end of my first appointment with my surgeon, when he had gone over my weight loss & gain cycles, my eating habits, general health, lifestyle, etc, he asked me where I thought I’d like to be. I told him 60kg as it was always my lowest weight. Honestly I would have been happy at 70kg. Anything was better than being 91. He told me he thought it was achievable. It was, plus more which was reached without trying to lose more. Which is where my body must have wanted to be. Instead of setting a lowest goal weight, set a couple of happy weight points like @ShoppGirl then see where your body settles. You can lose more if you want to be more restrictive with your diet & are willing to undertake more activity. As long as that’s sustainable you’re golden All the best.

    Determining Goal Weight

YES, a BMI of 20 or 21 is right in the middle. I should have said “normal” instead of perfect. Anyhow, I like the idea of multiple goal weights. I will do that. I meet with the dietician and exercise physiologist on Thursday. Maybe they will ask me about my goal weight and I will be better prepared.

Hello, I was just wondering something. Anyone with PCOS, GERD, FATTY LIVER all or some of these conditions, what is the most weight that you guys have lost with the gastric bypass? And for anyone who's had the bypass how did you guys prevent excess skin and, did you guys require surgery to fix the excess skin on your body such as: A BBL, TUMMY TUCK, BREAST AUGUMATAION? Hopefully, my surgery date will be in April/May because I have to get an endoscopy and I'm super excited but nervous at the same time about my surgery. And my main concern is I had an allergic reaction to my birth control in 2019 so I was just wondering what type of conceperative do guys use to prevent pregnancy without birth control do you guys use the depicote, IUD?

    Food Before and After Photos

Dinner tonight. Ate two slices of the grilled rib eye steak and all the veggies. I am fasting two meals a day, breakfast and lunch - eating only dinner to help drop a few pounds. Clothes are not tight - so it maybe just carrying a lot of fluids. Chemicals off. A few pounds are from some treats I did splurge upon. Of course, drinking 80 oz. of liquids - water, isopure, hot decaf tea, propel... Want to feel light on my feet and agile for upcoming business trip end of month. Anyone want to join or track with me - if you have gained a few? Just message me. ;]

Starting weight 15stone current weight 9stone 9 However I have some of that pesky flappy hanging skin on my lower tummy. Not as much as I expected which is good. I’ve managed to tone my top half of my belly giving it some definition. I also have two flaps of skin that once housed my breasts 😣 how soon after a sleeve has anyone else had a tummy tuck or breast uplift and who with? im doing some quotes at the moment to see if it’s viable as I feel ready is there any feedback from anyone in this situation? thanks

    Determining Goal Weight

the psychologist asked me what my goal weight was at my first appt with him, I think so he'd know if I was being realistic or not. I blurted out 199 lbs, which at the time seemed like a pipe dream to me after weighing over 300 for 20 years. I was shocked when he said "that sounds do-able". The surgeon never gave me a goal weight, he just said that the average patient loses about 70% of his/her excess weight. as I got closer to 199, I told the dietitian I wanted to try to get down to 170. She said if I worked really hard at it, I could probably get there. When I got to 170, I told her I wanted to shoot for 150. She told me that was kind of unrealistic, only about 10-15% of their patients get down to a normal BMI. But...I made it. so anyway, the point of this is, your goal weight can change as you go along in your journey.

    Determining Goal Weight

I did not choose the “perfect” BMI of 20 as my goal weight. I mentioned 140 pounds to the psychologist which is a BMI of 24. That is my “I feel happy weight” but 150 lbs is my “I feel healthy” weight. I get what you’re saying and I agree that too many WLS patients pick an unrealistic goal weight and are disappointed when they only lose a small amount, so they give up.

    Determining Goal Weight

Sounds like your psychologist may have dealt with a lot of disappointed patients in the past. I have never had an ideal weight suggested to, or discussed with me by surgeon, nutritionist, or psychologist. I've been told repeatedly that the average loss at 5 years after sleeve gastrectomy is 70% or thereabouts of excess weight. Big ballpark. I want to be much lighter than that so I have set my goal for a weight I have been at various points in my life and felt suited me. If I don't reach that, or anything near it, I might be be a bit miffed, but I'll still have lost loads of weight and be way healthier than when I started out, and that's what really matters to me. My body has a new set weight as of surgery day, and my job is to find that and make my peace with it, or consign myself again to a life of fighting my own body to lose weight it wants to hold on to!

    Determining Goal Weight

Ultimately, your surgery decides your goal weight. It seems pretty settled in the science that you wake up with a new set point. Your body has a weight it tries to get down to. You help it get there, and if you dare to listen, you'll know when you're there. You'll 'start falling off the wagon' (aka you'll need more than the 1200 calories you're eating) and you then have two choices: A: Listen and settle in, start maintenance. No matter if that's at BMI 32 or BMI 22. B: Look at an arbitrary number and start a new cycle of diet --> overeating --> more dieting --> more overeating. Lots of people don't know how hungry we fatties have been in our lives. I, for one, will never be hungry again. I'll probably gain the usual 5-10-15 lbs the next year, and that's totally fine. I will not start a new cycle of beating myself over the head based on what my scale happens to say. So with all the love and kindness in the world, why not explore dropping the 'perfect' in front of BMI 20? Who says you're not perfect at BMI 26? Or 30? I get that BMI 38 is probably not great for your health, but ultimately, your body already knows where it wants to be. Help it along

    Determining Goal Weight

I’m sure that the psychologist wanted to make sure that you don’t have unrealistic expectations for the surgery because some people don’t even get out of the overweight category but they still reduce alot of their comorbidities by getting out of the obese BMI. That being said, many people reach even the lower end of normal BMI. My doctor didn’t give me a goal weight and I set a few for myself. The first being a weight where I at least feel good enough to go out and do things, the second is the top of a normal BMI and the third is lower. I am almost to the second and am starting to think that my body might be happy here since I am no longer losing. I can probably add more exercise and reach the second but may not ever reach the third.
