  1. Okay, so it's been two full weeks on the WW program and I've lost 3 pounds. I'm happy with that rate of loss and feel like it'll increase now that I'm transitioned fully from a no-carb diet to a more well-rounded diet as there would have been a period where I would have gained weight when reintroducing carbs. Overall it's easy to do, kinda fun to track and measure and explore. Plus you can't beat the variety of foods you're allowed to have. Anybody else doing WW?
  2. Thanks Hope your journey is going forward nicely! It's almost certainly because of the longer bypass. The small intestine varies greatly in length among individuals, so for some, the MGB bypass will be almost similar to a SADI-S (loop duodenal switch). Generally, bypass length with the MGB has decreased, though - they find people lose weight great with 150 cm bypass, but with less chance of mineral deficiencies. Mine is 220 cm, but I'm lucky (so far) I'm doing better on all minerals now than pre-surgery except folate. It truly is baffling. It's a shorter surgery, it uses a mechanism known to general surgeons, and the surgery it is based on is time-tested (it was discovered treating a gunshot wound). I wonder if the people who would have to introduce and approve this are people who are comfortable with - and skilled in performing - the RNY. Hmmm ... it's actually kind of weird. Some people know me from when I was at a healthier weight (but not in a healthy relationship with food, either) in my early 20s, and they're kind of ... relieved? Which is annoying. Those that know only fat me are more straight-forward celebratory. But many people just don't comment on it. People who know me well say it's funny how I still look like me, just a lot lighter. You know what the weirdest thing is? People you know passing by you on the street, not recognizing you. It has happened more than ten times now.
  3. The best feeling ever eh after struggling with weight almost all our lives and the same daunting feeling of being watched. Seriously you look great, feel great. What else is there to it. Congrats on your journey. It's funny how this section is right in the corner. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Didn't know this info. It sounds weird considering both RYN and miniRYN have similar routing of the digestive track. 🤷🏻‍♀️ But from some of reviews out here, it does seem like mini has been doing great work. In Canada, surgeries are covered under our medical insurance, but we only have an option of Sleeve or RYN. Not sure why this isn't on the table yet when RYN is. Regardless, I was kinda confused with sleeve vs RNY. But given my PCOS history and ofc GERD associated revision, I ended up choosing RYN. And I think I am glad I did that cuz having gone through post-Op, I don't think I ever want to go back to an OR unless for extrutiating circumstances. Again, well done with your journey 👍🏼 Your advises and posts have been very helpful out here. 🤩

    Easy go easy come.

Such a difficult time for you @ShoppGirl but am pleased you are gaining some comfort from the care & support of the hospice staff. I remember knowing that the staff cared equally as much about my dad as we did when he was dying was immensely comforting to my family. Don’t worry too much about those couple of pounds. Your life & routines are pretty upside down at the moment. Your emotional distress won’t be helping either. I know it’s scary when you see that higher number (I’m experiencing it now about a couple of Christmas pounds. Don’t like it & want them gone.) Always skinny people never understand how 2 pounds can demoralise us so much. But I expect this is just a temporary gain/fluctuation because of these sad circumstances. All the best.

    Easy go easy come.

Thank you all for the well wishes and the prayers. A room just opened up at the hospice house and the staff there is truly AMAZING. They have been able to put her in positions that she just looks so comfortable and peaceful. Something that she hasn’t seemed even with the morphine for the last several days. Thanks for helping ease my mind about the weight. It’s funny cause if anyone else posted a similar concern I would be saying the same thing that it’s not likely to be a true gain in that short amount of time but when it’s your scale that goes up it’s just scary. But now I get it. I tried talking to my always been skinny cousin about it but she didn’t get it at all. I have been terrified since the start that I will be one that gains it all back and those two pounds just brought out that fear in me. Now if I can just keep resisting those fresh baked cookies at the hospice house I will probably be okay. 😉
  6. Can I just say how much I admire your journey right now? It seems like you're really reflecting on all the 'other' things about weight management, and I think that's inspiring. That's worth rewarding, too.

    New here, have some questions...

Completely agree with the above. Weight and track everything, prioritize protein at every meal, get your fluids in and take your vitamins, move your body daily. Even tiny shifts in our habits can lead to stalls and gain, so really being focused on consistency will make the biggest difference. I'm 4 months out and stick to pretty simple meals - good quality protein (chicken, lean beef, etc.) and fresh veggies in some form. Its not exciting, but it works for me.

    Easy go easy come.

First of all, I'm so sorry for the difficult situation. It is a truly heartbreaking road to walk, and our hearts are with you. Second, @catwoman7 is spot on here. Its VERY unlikely to be 2 pounds of true weight gain. So give yourself lots of grace to navigate this season, and turn your attention back to your weight when your mental energy allows.

Are you a member of the polar bear club?

I have always been a freezing cold person but when I got to my highest weight of 215.8lb I was always feeling hot, I was sweating loads and felt like I was always on fire. I am now down to about 190lb and I feel okay with a regulated temperature. I think as my weight decreases, this will change.

    October surgery friends??

Checking in! Howdy! This month has been alright. Met with my PCP the day after my 3 month follow up with my surgeon. Everyone is pleased with my progress and I'm on the right track. My menu has been opened up to "normal" foods for the last month, but I've yet to come across foods that don't agree with me (just have to have food or a shake before vitamins or else ugh). I've definitely lost more than I've ever lost on any previous weight loss program (max was always 35lbs) and every day I'm amazed at how I've adapted to making this a true lifestyle change. With prior programs, there was always that moment I could just get off track and stay there. With this, I am linked to my surgeon's office through Baritastic (so they have access to my food logs) which adds an extra layer of accountability. I'm also self-pay, so I have a lot of skin in the game riding on this. I'm on a pretty regimented schedule for intake because I can only do 4-6oz of stuff at a time and that stuff is usually something that is going to help me meet my daily goals. As I get closer to 250, which is about my lowest weight as an adult, I can't help but be a little nervous... like "What if I get stuck there and can't push past it?" Ridiculous thoughts, but still acknowledging they're there. I've found my area's support groups to be a major help. It really helps with getting my headspace in check and thinking about things from different perspectives. I've also seen performance increases in my gym. I've been regularly working out (5-6 days a week) since being cleared for it and at Orangetheory this past month for both benchmarks, I PR'd. On the 200m row, I went from 40.65 seconds to 40.1 seconds. On the 1 mile benchmark (3 miles on strider for me), I went from 7:39 to 7:14 shaving a total of 25 seconds off my time. Things feel easier in a smaller body than I had before. Anyway, that's a long post, but this is the month where I'm finally feeling that "It's finally happening," feeling.
  11. @Esimaintaining it forever is definitely a concern - Actually one of the reasons I want to get this last 10 in. I keep hearing about the bounce back of 10 or so lbs and want to ensure I stay in a happy zone with my weight. I'm pretty neurotic about weighing quite often (at least 4-5 times per week) and if I'm up 1-2 lbs I make sure I get back to the basics (not crash dieting,) by making sure I get in the fluids first - That keeps me fully and less snacky. @ 5lbs I start freaking out and typically do go back to real basics (tracking and measuring everything I put in my mouth). This usually happens after a vacation when I just throw caution to the wind!

    Before and After Pics

In the first photo I went from my surgery weight of 208lbs to 156lbs. In the second photo I went from my highest weight, 223lbs to 159lbs. I am currently 154lbs but I’m waiting until I’m in the 140s before I take anymore photos. All of these progress photos are amazing and inspiring!
  13. I guess the only thing I wish I'd known is how careful I have to be not to slip back into old habits and gain weight.

I am so sorry to hear about your grandma. I will be praying for her and your family. Don't worry about the weight right now. It's stress weight. You've got more important things to deal with at the moment. Take care.

    Easy go easy come.

Sorry to hear about your grandma — that must be rough. I wouldn’t worry about 2 pounds; my weight often fluctuates more than that in a single day. By now, you’ve most likely developed healthy habits and as long as you don’t stray too far from that path, going a week (or a few weeks) without tracking should not derail your weight loss.

    Hi

My starting weight was 252, surgery weight was 236, today I am 212. I will be 6 weeks on Tuesday. I dont see much movement on the scale the last week or so however I can see other changes in my body.
  17. My grandma is In hospice so we are pulling shifts making sure someone is with her 24/7. I have gone ONE WEEK without tracking and I have gained TWO POUNDS!! I haven’t had anything crazy bad just a few more servings of the same foods and snacks I have been eating. I know that I should be able to lose it but wow- that was way too easy to gain.

    Beer craving

Different plans have different timelines around when to start consuming alcohol again. What does your plan say? Remember it’s always best to follow your plan. Why the craving? Is it really beer you’re craving or something else (food)? Do you really need it or are you looking for something to comfort you? Swapping one addiction/craving for another is a concern after weight loss surgery. You can’t satisfy your food craving so you look for something else and alcohol is often what people turn too. Will one beer satisfy your craving or will you want another one tomorrow? Will that beer be worth the calories & the carbs? You’re not 4 weeks out & are still healing. It’s why you’re still on a staged return to eating a broader diet of solid food. Beer is very acidic & will upset & irritate your healing tummy. These are just some things to consider before making your decision. All the best.

    Fatigue

We all heal & recover in our own time. Some will say I was fine after a week or two others will say a month. Me, I was a couple of months but I always seem to take longer to recover from everything even a cold. Plus it was complicated by my tendency for occasional drops in blood pressure becoming low BP all day every day. Even my head became doughy & my concentration was poor. Don’t give yourself a deadline. Take your recovery at your pace & listen to your body. Keep working at meeting your fluid & protein goals. But you won’t feel like you did before - you’ll feel so much better because of your weight loss & improving general health. Won’t it be great.

    Potatoes 5 weeks out

I didn’t eat potatoes at first, but over a year out I eat them now. Not every night, and I’m not getting fries at fast food, but tonight for dinner I’m planning on making a potato and chicken sausage fry. I don’t have a ton, but I really enjoy the meal. Carbs are a tricky subject on these forums. Some people avoid them for life, and some have zero restrictions on anything. Personally I try to be reasonable with carbs- I don’t need candy or fast food, but I do have small amounts of rice and potatoes if it’s a part of a meal that is more heavily weighted to vegetables and/or protein. It works for me.
  21. We really are surgery twins! I am just outside of Atlanta and am scheduled for surgery 2/3. (That is assuming Anthem and Northside can figure out their differences by then.). I finished my requirements in November. I am in day 8 of a liquid diet and and down to 303. My highest weight was 330 this summer; 316 when I saw the surgeon in October; and 312 at the start of the liquid diet. Good luck to you!

    New here, have some questions...

That's almost four months from surgery, isn't it? Your weight loss stats are very similar to mine. I lost 25lbs before surgery and 27lbs since. My first advice would be to take a week and track absolutely everything you eat. Go back to basics - protein first, then veg, then good complex carbs if you have room. No drinking fluids for at least half an hour after eating. Clear the house of junk - you sound like you know that's what's holding you back and causing the dumping. Sticking to the program works (well it has for me so far!) I hope you smash that stall in no time. 💪

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

Congrats on your progress! I am doing strength training. Wife has a peloton bike, but I can't stand the tiny seat.. I'll try again when I lose some more weight.

    Tips to break a stall...

@AnotherGuy, great post! Stalls are super frustrating.. About losing muscle. One of my surgeon's goals is to avoid/reduce muscle loss. He says that if you are losing muscle, you need to up the protein intake, to have a 'positive Nitrogen balance'. The basic idea is if you don't get enough protein, the body breaks muscle mass. Every month he tests my body composition using an InBody scale (same one found in gyms), One month post-op I was losing weight, and he bumped my daily protein from 100 to 120.. one month later I didn't lose muscle mass (according to him ), and he bumped up my daily goal to 135g/day. This is my report from 3-4 weeks ago.
