  1. When some of your favorite outfits, that have been patiently waiting in your closet, start to come out and enjoy life yet again right alongside with you 🥰 😂 I had forgotten how easy a task it is to put on the socks at this weight. The return of the same feeling of ease. The joy is something else. Can't believe I had to wait this long for so many such little joys of life.

    Kept it Quiet?

Two secrets: I not only withheld my surgery; I also withheld that I went to Mexico to have it done. I have kept it to a very small group of 4 -- my 3 adult children and my mom. My kids were my emergency contacts and they knew about the surgery before I went. I went alone to Mexico due to Covid and it took me 2 months to admit to my kids where it was done. It was 4 months later that I shared both with my mom, due to not being able to predict her response (she was charmingly supportive). My mom and children have shared it with some of their friends and significant others. I have not told my siblings, best friend, cousins, or close co-workers. About work: My students have not really noticed. Coworkers are a mixed bag - some ask - one in particular who I am not close to brings up my weightloss A LOT. Almost everyone else just ignores it or compliments my outfits. I have had people come to me about weight loss advice and they have told me about how upset they feel. With an honest heart, I reassure them that they look wonderful to me. Since I am a teacher and gossip is constant in our school, I have chosen time and again to not share my journey. The fallout: One of my three children felt betrayed that I lied about where I was having my surgery - honestly this has put a real strain on our relationship. She is hurting, but she has to come to terms with this in her own time. I feel guilty for not telling other members of my family, but I am standing by my decision. I work very hard to stay body positive and I believe that all sizes are beautiful in others - I could not give this grace to myself. Am I going to continue to hold this as a secret? Most likely yes. If I ever have a man that I am serious about, I may confide in him. As time has worn on, I feel even less likely to tell people, not more.
  3. I was thinking the same thing about rice as well. I enjoyed rice a lot too but don’t miss it at all. Same with bread & pasta. A waste of calories, nutritionally poor & very filling. Because they make you feel full more quickly you can’t eat the nutritionally dense food you need to be eating. The large, rich, creamy Starbucks drinks are likely filling you too much too quickly too limiting what you can eat later. A protein shake would be a better choice for nutrition & calories. I agree with @ms.sss & @SleeverSk. Eat your protein first, then your vegetables, then any highly processed carbs like rice. Instead of a sandwich, eat a salad or try a low carb high protein bread or wrap. Salads are great. You can throw in just about anything any protein (meat, seafood, legumes, cheese, etc.) fruit, cheese, nuts, seeds, etc. as well as vegetables & fruit. Have a look at the Food before & after thread for ideas on meals & ingredients too. Taking an hour to eat a chicken thigh & a cup of rice is pretty much how long I would take to eat a chicken thigh & a cup of vegetables. Are you tracking your food & nutrients? How many calories are you consuming each day? Have you had any blood tests recently? What advice is your surgeon & dietician giving you? If they’re not, start demanding help. Out of curiosity, you had surgery at a low BMI (about 29), what was your motivation for pursuing surgery? History of weight issues, co morbidities, …?

Thanks for your reply Butterfly333, the 7th. is my first appointment. The primary concern is my Gastroparisis. I am anxious, as another weight loss surgery was the last thing I was expecting. Yea I’m trying to navigate the site, I like the old one too. Well let’s see what this week brings. Take care

    Regrets...anyone?

I had lap-band 13 years ago, I lost 100 pounds, but gained it all back and struggled with frequent vomiting and severe reflux. Even with the band deflated. My surgeon told me they don't do lap-band for people who need to lose as much as I did anymore. I weighed 375 at surgery and weigh 404 now. The lap-band became a nightmare. The band slipped, I developed severe GERD, Barrett's esophagus, recurring aspiration pneumonia and hiatal hernia. My band was removed in January and I feel so much better, but I'm in the pre-surgical program to have gastric bypass. I'm super-excited for the bypass surgery. That's really what I wanted to begin with but my Mom and my ex-husband thought it was too dangerous... so here I am. I have a new, very supportive husband! 😍 And my Mom, who is a nurse, has seen a lot more people with success after surgery so she's on board too! Either way, I'm doing this for me!!!

Stall or I am done loosing?

I’m at 8 months too. I had to be gentle with myself because I got Covid (masks off at school). I honestly gained 10 lbs eating nothing but l/s chicken broth. There’s always going to be something, but I have to put one foot in front of the other to get to my goal. I found that tracking my food intake is helping again. Just keep trying stuff to see what works for you. You’ll find your weight loss sweet spot.
  9. I was the same weight for MONTHS (185pounds)… at about a year out I figured “okay, this is it. I’m stable and maintaining now”. Recently they have me increasing my calories (I’ve managed to get up to 1500 calories a day which has been a difficult transition because I tend to eat foods that are lower in calories ) and then I dropped a Lot of pounds very quickly. I am now 174 (I hadn’t weighed myself in a while because I always hovered around 185) . My nutritionist about had a fit and wants me to do more regular check ins now. (Insert eye roll here). I just got Invisalign too so my tendency to snack (which is how I upped my calories) is now nonexistent because getting these Invisalign trays off are like wrestling a rabid animal 😅 anyways…. I know a lot of people have broken stalls by temporarily increasing their caloric intake. 🤷🏼‍♀️ You could increase your calories and see if that jump starts weight loss again

    Kept it Quiet?

I told my family (brother & sister) because I knew they wouldn’t say anything rude to me - that’s just how we are. I told a few friends & if one of them asked about my weight loss I told them. But I told my husband & daughters that under any circumstances while I’m still alive are they to tell his dad & brother! His family has always made us feel bad about the size of all of us & I just don’t want them knowing. We saw his dad a couple weeks ago when my oldest was visiting. His girlfriend hasn’t seen me in a while. She kept calling me skinny mini & going on & on about how much weight I have lost. When she asked how I did it I just said by changing my eating habits & eating smaller portions. (That’s not a lie) I felt bad that she said anything because my older daughter is a big girl. She would love to have surgery but can’t afford it right now. I could tell that it was upsetting to her😿
  11. I actually lost some weight when I had mine removed. I was able to eat healthier foods that my band wouldn't allow. It really hindered healthy eating for me. And all of the years that I lived with GERD because I was afraid to remove it for fear that I would gain weight... after it was removed and I lost weight, I wanted to kick myself for not removing it sooner.
  12. 4 weeks ago I was ready to have it taken out but now that I'm unfilled and gaining weight, I think I want to try to fill it a little at a time and see if that helps?
  13. Ha, they sold it to us as a permanent weight loss procedure, but it's the biggest medical joke ever imo, lol. It should've never been cleared by the FDA. It causes more harm than good.
  14. I am new to this site so I hope I'm doing things right! I've had my band for 14 years. Several years ago I started having issues with with food going down and drinks. I could only eat certain things and sometimes it depended on the time of day. I know it's weird and hard to explain. I lived with it until 3 weeks ago. I had an upper GI and it showed nothing went into my stomach (at least that thick drink didn't at that time. I had my band unfilled (mainly because I was taking a trip to Costa Rica and wanted to enjoy eating & drinking without vomiting). Since I've been "unfilled" I have been bloated, swollen and have gained weight. I've been very careful about what I'm eating and all I drink is water (which before I was unfilled water would hardly go down for me). I will be having another upper GI at the end of the month and then see the doctor early may. I just don't want to keep gaining weight! Any ideas or suggestions at what's happening with me?!

    Kept it Quiet?

my immediate family knew, as well as my husband (of course) and a few close friends. Otherwise, I wasn't very open about it. I'm still not super open about it, but i do tell more people about it than I used to - although at seven years out, I really don't have to. Everyone has either already seen me since I lost all that weight, or they never knew me when I was obese.

    Kept it Quiet?

It is such a personal decision! Most of my friends know, as well as my immediate family and my husband's family. Everyone has been supportive (to my face, at least) and no one has given unsolicited opinions. Lots of questions, but I don't mind that at all. My extended family doesn't know - I don't live near them, and they are the unfortunate combination of gossipy and judgmental, so I didn't feel the need to broadcast it. I'm reaching a decision point, potentially, as I will see them for Easter in a few weeks. While I am still obese, by the time I see them I'll have dropped around 100 lbs, so I can't imagine someone won't realize I'm losing weight. I need to decide what I will say when they ask. I don't feel ashamed of surgery, and I want to be a good advocate for the procedure as an option for people so educating them could be good. But, I know I will be the topic of conversation (and probably conversation on whether I will keep it off or not this time) so I need to think through how to handle it. In the end, you have to decide what will give you the best support. I have found having a good support network has been so helpful - they are happy for me and are good cheerleaders sometimes when I need it. But, if the people around you are likely to be toxic, then I would keep my mouth shut. You don't owe anyone an explanation and the potential impact of toxicity on your success is huge.
  17. Rice. This is likely the main contribution to your inability to eat alot and gain weight. Rice is notoriously filling for the majority of us, with low nutritional value. One cup is only 200 cals so if the majority of your diet is (less than) 1 cup of rice and a chicken thigh (and assuming you attempt this 3 times a day) your cals are pretty low by end of the day….resulting in further weight loss. Maybe cut down a bit on the rice and replace with with a fattier meat? Or some avocado? You can also pour a nice high-calories sauce over it all, like a pesto or herb infused olive oil, or a nice peanut satay, etc. P.S. Rice was a daily staple for me too pre-op…now i only have rice when i eat sushi.

    Kept it Quiet?

I told my hubby and son and my best friend, who I had the pleasure of meeting at infant school from school. They all knew I had struggled for years with loosing and gaining weight. I haven't told anyone else, my parents are dead and my sisters well - one would be jealous and one would try and find a psychiatric reason for my need for it. The rest of the world just doesn't bother me. I have a very pointy middle finger for them.
  19. I “eat out” (or take out) all the time…maybe 3-4 times a week (and almost always when its NOT my turn to cook, lol) I don’t actually eat much (compared to others) when i do, and sometimes i wont even eat, i’ll just drink. Im not losing any more weight, but im not gaining any either.

    Kept it Quiet?

Welcome aboard! 👋 Everyone around me knows. My family is super close, and yes they're supportive and wonderful. It's something you have to decide for yourself, because only you can predict how those around you might react. When the weight starts coming off and there's a dramatic difference, people will start to ask questions. So at some point people are probably going to find out. You just have to decide if it's better to tell them before or after. Will delaying telling them make them more upset (they might feel betrayed for you not confiding} or will seeing your weight loss prevent them from making negative comments (they won't be able to say it's just another diet to fail when they see your progress)? I have a friend that had VSG in Mexico two years ago and she only told her husband and kids, and she went alone due to Covid. When she came back, some months later she told me, or rather showed me. We finally met for coffee and I didn't recognize her. I was shocked, but in a good way. We didn't get together that year until the end of summer, due to Covid. I was the only friend she told about her surgery, since I was a weight loss patient, she knew I would understand and support her. And she still hasn't told anyone else. Sure people ask questions about why she eats such tiny amounts, and I don't think they buy her "I'm just not hungry" line now, lol. They probably suspect, but they never bring it up. Best wishes!

    Kept it Quiet?

Some people have family being totally terrible. My family has been nothing but supportive and I've actually put it on FB, and only had one negative comment from someone who failed surgery. It's your decision. People will ask you once you start losing weight what you are doing. They will comment on what you eat (or how much you eat). You don't have to tell them the truth, but you have to figure out what to say when they ask you what's up. But yeah, some people are jerks. Good luck!

    Regrets...anyone?

Yeah friends on here used to be a bigger thing years ago when there was a chat room. The entire community was closer knit than it is now. I miss the way BP used to be. I'm sorry to hear about your band troubles. They sound much like mine. The second process is coming along nicely. I started the process in February and I will be cleared for surgery after my dietitian appointment next week. Then my case goes before review, then I get an appointment with the surgeon and a tentative surgery date. It's looking like some time in May. GERD is under control at the moment due to Protonix and I've not gained any weight since band removal, I've actually lost a bit. Best wishes!

    Utter regret

Can I ask you- although this is not about the original post (my heart goes out to OP and hope they get the help they need!!) you wrote you ate every time you were in pain. But I see on your profile that you lost lots of weight. How did you get on track and lose the weight if you were eating all the time?

Stall or I am done loosing?

You could stay at the same weight for months and then drop more weight, from what I've read and heard from others. Shift work does make it really hard to lose weight, so congrats on losing as much as you have! The only thing you can do is really focus on what you're eating and drinking - keep track of your calories from food and drinks. I've heard from many people that even years out they still have restriction if they focus on lean protein.

Hi don’t know if do friends thing in here , it’s been years since got on, but seems we are in the same boat. I was in an O/S assignment and got sick then the all night acid vomiting started. Because of Covid, I was stuck there until late oct ,20 . Had lap band removed last April and now IBS n all sorts of problem ensued and now my stomach does not empty. Sugar is wack, plus gaining weight fast. How is the 2nd process going.? I know the lap band took 4 months to get it finally done . Good luck!
